    I'm a member, going to send this suggestion on the member site: but--I wasted a lot of time trying to curb "normal/healthy" puppy biting that could/should have been spent elsewhere, BECAUSE UA-cam trainers said it was a problem. Meanwhile, I let my puppy chase squirrels on walks, meet every dog (poor socialization), chase/get over excited at water hose, walking with EVERY "no-pull" harness on the market, etc. ALL things I'm NOW trying to correct. Things I SHOULDN'T have done, I just didn't know better. A long and GREAT podcast could be done on "mistakes" owners make with puppies just not knowing any better. I bet if Robert put out a "question" on things members regret allowing puppies to do would be SUPER AWESOME, might generate GREAT CONTENT for even TWO podcasts!!!

    My puppy is about 5 months old now. We finally made it past the razor sharp baby teeth (thank goodness!!) and now he is mouthing even more with his new grown up teeth. I have watched all the other trainers out there on how to stop biting. But THIS, This is the most common sense video I have seen out there. He is going to bite, he will grow out of it. It's my job to manage it. I appreciate the common sense of this!

    I had many dogs and puppies of different breeds (mainly B mali) and he is totally right.
    It will go away as they grow. Those who have calmer temperament might never even show biting, and those with more agressive temp will lose the biting ranging from 3rd-12th month. It will go away.
    Coming from a person who has scars all over his feet thanks to my belgian mali puppies and one shihtzu 😅

    Hey Robert. I have a five month old saint shepherd who is starting to come out of a really squirrelly period where he went buck wild biting and playing too hard. I didn’t roughhouse with him as a pup like I have with other dogs I’ve had because I didn’t want to get him any more riled up than he already was. Do you wrestle and play with your dogs, or do you keep it limited to the type of interactions that you show in your videos? He’s starting to understand how rough is too rough, but i don’t want to do it if it’s a net negative. Thanks

      I have an extremely mouthy GSD. What has worked for me has been keeping him well stocked with a wide variety of chews. All the stuff Robert listed is great, but I would add my pup also loves Himalayan cheese sticks & his X-large deer antler. The combination of gnawing & eating bits of edible chews kept My boy busy for hours! Good luck 🦴

My neighbor's Husky has a softer bite, I've given those to him & the Husky does fine with it. Great videos - really informative. Thank you.
    Question - I have a 4 month old Malinois puppy and she's great - her training is coming along well and she gets plenty of exercise and down time. She's super smart and really could be one of the best dogs I've ever had. Anyway, she does have a bit of prey instinct and a little bit of a resource guarding, but we're working on it and it's getting better. Every now and then however, I let loose with the dog, wrestle and let her chew/mouth. She gets pretty wild but never to the point where I'm concerned about her hurting me. Is this sort of activity problematic?

      As an update a year later - Daisy is an unbelievable dog. She still plays rough but knows limits of what each person likes. With me alone she will let loose - will growl and look super aggressive when playing with me but I never have a concern. Around kids she is like a puppy, running and playing and never acting aggressive. Around strangers she is properly guarded, respectful but if someone unwanted approaches she stops them in their tracks. She runs off leash but if I whistle she is at my side in 5-10 seconds even if we are in the woods outside of where i can see her (amazing how well she can hear). She might be the best dog I've had...

    I mean, but how do we limit our KIDS from the puppy for 12 months?! My puppy is literally hurting my kids and my kids are now afraid of her. Scream and cry everytime she comes near them because all she does is bite and jump all over them. It's heartbreaking.

    • @kayley7606
      @kayley7606 2 роки тому +1

      HI, fellow parent and puppy owner here. I think a big factor in finding your solution will depend on your home layout etc. For me, the kids play area and room, and their restroom is distinguished my a little hall--I used a tall gate there so the kids and puppy can be kept separate as needed. Also, while training and preventing those behaviors (jumping and biting for example) I use either a short leash, or a white rope line tied at my waist to keep the dog at my side so if those behaviors occur I can prevent and correct them immediately. The biting and chewing will be outgrown for the most part, but you have to be very sure not to reinforce the behavior. The jumping is not simply outgrown however--that would definitely need to be addressed with training. As I am not a trainer I won't say how specifically that could or should be dealt with since we haven't really had that particular issue, but I'm sure there will be a good video with clear instructions on how to train a dog not to jump or pounce. I think the challenge often with kids is that the puppy really view them as playmates, so you'll definitely want to teach your kids how to behave with the dog so that these behavior problems can be resolved. I hope your situation improves! Your puppy and kids will eventually be very happy and able to safely play! :)

    • @kayley7606
      @kayley7606 2 роки тому +1

      A simple recommendation that would be easy for the kids to follow would be when puppy jumps to turn their side to the dog, deny them any interaction--definitely not what the puppy wants. When the puppy stops jumping, they can reengage in calm play, maybe with a chew toy. When the dog tries to bite, fist the hand and pull away with a firm, "No bite." Plenty of chew toys top keep the dog biting at toys and not kids. Biting or jumping ends the play.
