What a sad world when the most basic concepts 'man' and 'woman' are turned into the euphemisms 'body type 1' and 'body type 2'. Even the most pessimistic distopian writers were unable to predict this bs.
I agree that it's terrible, but at least they added a 3rd and 4th option to justify it slightly more.

I like the fact that Larian studios had the alpha ver out for almost 3 years then in the Release version, took away the Character creation options and added pronoun wielding sexual deviance to Character creation because the pre release Alpha Tracked and sent data and all because and I quote " people were creating too many straight white males" , ie the audience for the game

The problem with RP'ing in a western RPG is that if you want to roleplay anything besides Chaotic Horny, Neutral Bland, or just plain Evil, you're shit out of luck.

This is why I punish my players for being horny in my Pathfinder games. One of my campaigns happened to have a brothel in that world, but I deliberately set it up so nothing good comes from it, including fantasy AIDS making healing spells weaker and possibly fail. There was a dark backstory and side quest there involving a trafficking ring with an illusionary spell to disguise children as halfling or dwarves. The relevation of this would cause a manhunt against everyone that willingly worked it or was a patron. Basically would result in a drawn-out glorided TPK by execution if the whole party was horny and tenacious enough to resist arrest.
This wouldn't kill the campaign though, the whole thing was revolved around adventurers building reputation arround completing smaller quests on an island nation to get noticed and hired as private sector contract worker for the island government to kill a kraken with a massive bounty on its head disrupting trade with the mainland. The continent was also at war, so they couldn't be bothered to spend resources in the opposite direction. No exp, leveling up was done on quest completion, because the level was also how well know they were with their actions. So if there was an unfortunate TPK or something, they can just roll a new party at 2 levels lower. Since the campaign was centered around a kraken bounty, it didn't matter if everyone died because hundreds of desperate adventures are after the same thing. Fry that fish, collect the life-changiny bounty, re-open trade with the mainland, and get off what essentially became a free range prison.
You had more choices in genitalia types than body types.
Oh. 5th edition. That explains it.

Romance mechanics and their consequences have been a disaster for the roleplaying genre.
If you do it badly - sure.
But that goes for literally anything.
I don't remember the Tali romance from Mass Effect, being de gene rate nonsense.
Romance mechanics are great.
The problem is that Larian totally failed on every possible level when it comes to make theirs.
First of all the player should ALWAYS (with some rare exception) be the one engaging the romance.
YOU should be the one that make the move to get that ass, not the other way around.
Then there is the fact that romance should take time to archive. You should work your way up to it and make the right moves to get in your target good grace, something that is somehow totally absent from BG3. Every character will try to bang you as long as talk to them a couple of times.
Then there is the obvious case of "let's pretend heteronormativy is a made up concept" which I don't think I even need to explain why it's bad.
And lat but not least, they forgot that the default state of a relationship with a companion should be that small thing we call "friendship", or "platonic relationship".
FOR SOME REASONS the blue haired weirdos in charge of Larian romances totally forgot that being good friend with people is something people do, especially with characters they do like and enjoy the company of. Instead they thought the only choices you have is kicking them in the nutts when they try to shove them in your face or just suck it up (both literally and figuratively).
It's pretty insane to see how awful on every level the romance writing has been in that game, it's so bad that I feel like we need to find the name of the people in charge of that debacle and make sure Larian get rid of them, because just as sure as a bad apple will spoil the whole basket, an awful farleft weirdo will destroy your company and I'll be pretty sad to see this company die (or worst, get completely corrupted like so many others before them).

@arsenelupin9697 I'm not even talking about degeneracy, I just can't think of a single RPG that was improved by romance options. Skyrim used marriage as a bare-bones life simulation feature, and the only other one I can tolerate is Dragon's Dogma because it's so hilariously bad I can't help but laugh. Everything else, especially from Bioware, has felt like shoe-horned waifu trash, where the quality of dialogue consistently takes a dive as some nerd ponders what flirting sounds like. It's cringe in tabletop, and it's cringe in video games.

When they added the mirror, a bunch of people were excited over how the game allowed them to be "fluid." I enjoy getting them angry when I say "I know, it's great! Game really embraces fantasy!"

BG1 has the "girdle of gender changing" item so it's not exactly new to the series. I'm sure it was meant as a joke item in the 90s, but it was there.

While I may find it annoying at times, it hasnt bothered me much in this game. I just dont select it and the problem isnt there. Also, if any of the party wants to ram your innards just say no. Suprisingly it works really well. Look, there will be a lot of shit, but you can walk around it. Granted, in the Cyberpunk setting it would be unrealistic if you couldnt change your gender or be a guy with tits. You know the rules, the moment it can be done someone will do it.
Agreed on all fronts. I'm having a very hard time connecting with my party except for 2, and _both_ of them have some varying form of "Angered otherworldly beings" syndrome. With friends, it's more enjoyable as you don't have to worry about the douches you're allied with bitch and moan about being a hero or a villain.
To Larion: Less horny, more sanity next time.

There are like 4 companions that are horny and all of them have reasons that make sense.
Gale literally was fucking the goddess of all magic. He's a fuck boy.
Karlach couldn't even be physically touched for like a year.
Astarion is initially horny and then realizes that being raped for 200 years has messed with his idea of sexuality.
Laezel is a gythanki and sex for them is purely for primal pleasure and it doesn't even lead to pregnancy as we know it.
Also literally all of these characters grow and change throughout the game. Laezel starts to understand monogamy and mutual feelings over carnal desire. Astarion doesn't want to be a sex toy and even avoids it eventually. Gale basically just wants companionship he's been alone for years dealing with his hubris.
That's 4 of 10 companions.
Yeah, I think I'll just stick with owlcat's crpgs.
I am honestly so glad that Razor's game rereviews still have the editing that they did a decade ago. They harken back to the golden age of youtube game reviews in a way no one else does anymore and are so much more engaging than the modern trend of playing the same 40 seconds of inane "gameplay" on loop in the background.

No, the Devs were pretty open. When the initial preorder access to act 1 went live, they made a concerted effort to let the world know that the largest majority of created characters for the first few weeks were white males. Then tried to insinuate things. Then people told them to shut up and make games and they got quieter.
The media knew about it....and lied. As they are wont to do.
Truly why took that freedom away from players. Who tf cares what people do in their single player game??
No character creation. Just like 5th edition DnD.
I was mulling it over and the issue with having every option available to every character is that you start having to use more time to achieve the same level of depth. This results in the developers simply taking the lazy choice and giving everyone the same romance with a specific character.
To use two examples from Bioware (when they were great). Jade Empire and Dragon Age Origins.
Dragon Age Origins: Alistair is a romance option for female characters alone. At one point, after you get his opinion high enough, he will give your character a rose. Saying it "reminded him of you" and "found it incredible, something so gentle and beautiful could survive on the battlefield."
The quotes dont quite work with a guy with higher strength and wearing heavier armor then Alistair himself.
With Jade Empire the best possible ending is only avaiable to male characters. After prying into Sagacious Tien enough it becomes revealed that Dawnstar has a claim to the throne because she was named after an event that takes place before the plot. It also takes convincing her to take the throne as well near the end of the game. This cant happen if shes simply not going to have heirs because shes a long wall or embankment designed to prevent flooding.
You can't make everyone happy. If you try, you will only produce tripe that appeals to the lowest common denominator and only leave tasteless idiots satisfied.
On your last point: the sad truth is that the lowest common denominators/tasteless idiots make up the majority of humanity. Not sarcasm; the majority (the _vast_ majority) of humanity are low-brow, small-minded, short-sighted, egotistical, hedonistic midwits (at best). It is the small minority of higher-calibre remainders that basically hold up all of society and maintain higher standards than all the rest; they are the ones that create and evolve - all the rest consume, stagnate and destroy.
Most of humanity is worthless. And the key problem is that companies, in a bid to make as much money as possible, will attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominators out of the simple fact that there are more of them - far, far more - than there are people with credibility, principals and taste. It's about greed.
Does it often work? Absolutely not. But when it does, it's like hitting the jackpot. And that's why all companies, once they inevitably become greedy and entitled enough, will seek to hit that jackpot or die trying. Pure greed, as by catering to the bottom-feeders of humanity, whom are the vast majority. More consumers = higher chances of a big pay-out. That's literally all there is to it.
And for the rest? The people with credibility, principals and taste? We can all pound sand, apparently. They don't need (nor want) us anymore.
You can bet your bottom dollar that this windfall of success BG3 and Larian have seen _will_ only cause them to triple-down for any future games. This is an omen of things to come. They've hit their absolute peak and will soon stall, before going into a tail-spin (but not before jumping from the plane with golden parachutes, of course). BG3 is, undoubtedly, their last reasonably good game. It's all downhill from here.
One of the better examples of selective npc romance was dragon age inquisition.
For all that games faults it nailed the romances with characters not only having sexual preferences, but racial ones as well. Except for iron bull, that guy was a complete degenerate and the qunari from the first game would have staked him out in the desert, flawed the skin from his back, and left him for the carrion.

That's the problem with "choice" in games, in general. The more freedom you give players, the shallower everything is. Like, you have control over Geralt in the Witcher, but you're still playing Geralt; he has a certain character, certain skills, certain outlook, and so your choices are relatively restricted. Or Shepard from Mass Effect; there was paragon and renegade Shep, and that was it--basically two versions of the character, and most everything fit into those. I understand why some people don't want a 100% scripted experience in a game, I get it, but the further you get away from that, the more shallow and simple things become. I personally think the best is that middle ground; have a character who is relatively defined, but allow specific choices to be made, like being more pragmatic or more idealistic.
Okay, that last sentence on the next to last paragraph had me confused, then laughing. It's the single best way of casually dodging censorship I've seen yet.
Admittingly, they did have some right leaning messages, but they were kind of hidden.

I could go back and forth on whether including pronouns is actually pushing an agenda. Motivation matters. Same for using them in a personal capacity.
Including them though - is enabling the normalization of something that causes great suffering to the vulnerable among us. Increasingly those vulnerable being targeted are children.

BG3 started off as strong as BG2 did, but it definitely tripped at the end. BG2 is still the superior Baldur's Gate. If BG2 was given the modern visual and combat treatment it would far outshine BG3.
The NPC companions were far superior and their romances deep and varied among them. The side areas and quest were much more interesting and felt more important. There was little to no storyless side content. Everywhere had something goin on. And the main character was actually someone so significant, the entire plot of BG3 literally revolves around them. In BG1 and 2 YOU are the king on the board, the thing every baddie wants to be and wants to exploit for what you have. The story forms around you, not the events of others.
Too bad wotc completed neutered the character and the best romance companion in BG in books. So many better ways to make it canon.

Beamdog sorta did that a decade ago with their remaster. Thankfully their additions can be largely ignored and their offering of Siege of Dragonspear consigned to the dustbin of history where it belongs.

Having played BG 1, 2, Icelandale, and other RPG games I was not expecting that at all, I just realized how absurd the horniness was when the gay vampire bit me in the neck for blood. Well I am glad I am not the only one who hated Astarion. From the word go I wanted him to take a flying leap into the Abyss and see how quickly his "smolder" gets him while he is being torn to shreds by every demon in there. Not because he was a bisexual vampire, but because that seemed to be his only personality trait.
That and his life had REALLY sucked. Which would be more meaningful if that wasn't the running theme--EVERYONE had a shit life.
His central personality trait is being jaded that he was a slave for two centuries. Has nothing to do with his sexuality whatsoever.

4:57 I've been saying for years that the purpose of a silent protagonist is not for immersion, but for variety. A silent protagonist in these games allows for a greater variety of dialogue choices to be available because the cost of voicing them isn't there. Baldur's gate and Vampire Bloodlines are the only two games I know of that take proper advantage of the fact that your character doesn't say anything, so technically they can say everything. So yeah, fuck the people saying that a silent protag is a bad idea, it's perfect for RPGS

Healing magic doing dick and Fireball as well as similar spells hitting like nukes? Yeah thats D&d to a T. Don't know how Barbarian somehow got inaccurate though. That's pretty much the absolute reverse in D&d thanks to crackhead strength and Reckless Attacks, you get surprised to NOT hit as a Barb table-side.
I'm putting that down to bad RNG on Razor's end. Karlach's been consistently putting out the hurt in my playthrough, especially once I kitted her out with shit that builds up stacks of Heat
@ZoomerStasi D&D 5e - Healing Word, heals 1d4 + spell Mod. Cure Wounds, 1d8 + spell mod. One extra die per spell level consumed. Potion of Healing 2d4+4, Greater 4d4+4, Superior 8d4+8, Supreme 10d4+20.
My point being, he's correct; 5e healing IS low. It's usually quite manageable if you have items or features to boost it (i,e Life domain) but generally speaking, healing in 5e is something that's typically fairly weak and you're better off beefing up your AC or not letting enemies get close enough to attack, if you can. There's only 1 potent healing spell - Heal (70 hit points, flat) which is a 6th level slot so you don't even get it until you're level 9 in a spellcasting class that learns it.
Similarly, Fireball does rather high damage for its level and only has a few rivals which are more situational. It can go poorly with a low dice roll but typically Fireball is very potent.
Allot of people dont get how you are supposed to play barbs. Reckless attack all the time every time, they enemy should die before you do.
I promise you that the bait and swtich here was most likely a demand from Wizards of the Coast. That company is balls deep in the pronoun garbage and making unsellabe adventure books as a result.

Not only the third act is by far the longest, the most full of content, side and main quest, the act with the most and the best bosses, but it's also the one with the most payoff for all the stuff you did trough the 2 previous acts.
Hell, if you wanted to shit on the game, at least do it properly instead of lying and just say that the act 3 is optimized like shit and full of bugs, that would at least be close to the truth.
Once you get past the Goblin Camp the entire party comes down with a case of the horny, at least Dragon Age Origins let you build up to or just flat out ignore the romance.

@@ANPC-pi9vu To provide some context when I first started the game I did not like Asterion, his snobbish attitude and the fact he tried drinking my blood when my character slept made me feel he was gonna be a liability in the long run.
After a third playthrough, it took some time but I did warm up to him a bit as to where I can tolerate him now, that’s probably never gonna happen with Gale though.

Astarion has a pretty cool story if you are a good influence on him. I wish the devs put as much into friendships as into romances, though, as I think it's easier to miss stuff with him if not in a romance.

One player uploaded from a playthrough where they let Astarion face his master without their input and he chose not to Ascend and freed the spawn, giving the Gur a speech about how they deserve the same chance he's had. Others had to intervene to stop him from Ascending and had it go horribly. It's interesting how much the player can influence him if they take their time to get to know him and encourage him to be a better person.

The hirelings being pre-determined forms and classes - especially when they're all basically Wither's puppets anyway - is inexcusable.

This game let me role play a paladin so hard. took the stance: demons and undead get the hammer. "What about the vampire companion"? Killed him. "What about Raphael"? tried to kill him several times, eventually succeeded. "What about withers?" .... I'm working on it
God, can you imagine a game with this level of production but with Grognard sensibilities? No pronouns or seducing goblins or more tieflings than you can shake a stick at. Just gold, glory and righteous questing.
What makes me sad is "imagine" is likely all I've ever be able to do...
My brothers were the kings of the grand narrative -- they've run games where more jaws hit the table than dice when the party realized what they'd just done... but 100% of my best days as a character were serial runs, taking down scores. Rune Quest to DnD, Shadowrun to Cyberpunk -- fuckin' Car Wars to Dauntless -- give me an objective scenario, a hot lead on some loot, or Tuesday's McGuffin to pinch, let me see my party, and let's concoct some chicanery. Saving the world is for Star Wars and Indiana Jones -- I want to *live* as a fast talkin' rogue whose plans sometimes work and who fumbles a lot in a fake world, not save it.
While there are games that achieve that ideal, they don't have the production and graphics level. Gameplay's there though.. That's something... Man, now I'm sad.

Yeah the worst parts of the game single handedly is the wokeness and horniness. The character creator is cancer on the eyes you hit randomize and 99% of the time you will get Frankenstein’s monster. Pink hair bearded females, long purple haired men with vulvas, and weird genetic abominations so hideous they should have the aberrant tag. I literally avoid talking to male characters out of sheer fear of accidentally seeing some man booty. How about instead of giving me worthless ass pronouns let me pick my sexuality to avoid being sexually harassed by every important character in the game. Barring that the game is amazing granted I haven’t seen the endings yet.

Someone pointed out to me once that the limited faces and body types was due to the cinematic animations potentially having issues, especially when two characters kiss or otherwise closely interact. This makes some sense but I prefer camera tricks to hide the jank over less customizable appearance.

Romance mechanics are great.
The problem is that Larian totally failed on every possible level when it comes to make theirs.
First of all the player should ALWAYS (with some rare exception) be the one engaging the romance.
YOU should be the one that make the move to get that ass, not the other way around.
Then there is the fact that romance should take time to archive. You should work your way up to it and make the right moves to get in your target good grace, something that is somehow totally absent from BG3. Every character will try to bang you as long as talk to them a couple of times.
Then there is the obvious case of "let's pretend heteronormativy is a made up concept" which I don't think I even need to explain why it's bad.
And lat but not least, they forgot that the default state of a relationship with a companion should be that small thing we call "friendship", or "platonic relationship".
FOR SOME REASONS the blue haired weirdos in charge of Larian romances totally forgot that being good friend with people is something people do, especially with characters they do like and enjoy the company of. Instead they thought the only choices you have is kicking them in the nutts when they try to shove them in your face or just suck it up (both literally and figuratively).
It's pretty insane to see how awful on every level the romance writing has been in that game, it's so bad that I feel like we need to find the name of the people in charge of that debacle and make sure Larian get rid of them, because just as sure as a bad apple will spoil the whole basket, an awful farleft weirdo will destroy your company and I'll be pretty sad to see this company die (or worst, get completely corrupted like so many others before them).

what do you mean? my first play through I finished the game in act2 via elminster like in the intro. game would've been faster but I had wait till my kids went to college for the level up animation. best ending btw after purposefully dragging the game out to act3 in subsequent plays. game was maybe 5-10 hours with little combat following msq. you have to kinda go murderhobo to get some combat unfortunately.

Something I've learned recently... Perhaps if one wants to replicate the tabletop experience, one may be better off playing tabletop; specifically with friends, and using an edition that isn't hot garbage.

what really grinds my gears is that in d&d there is no justification for trans anything to exist. there is magic to permanently turn you into the opposite sex if you wish to do so. hell, elminster aumar the primary wizard of the forgotten realms setting spent multiple years as a woman named elmara. everybody would look for a mage suitably powerful and the spell components to get polymorphed. nobody would even think about travelling the road to nowhere and getting stuck on it!

I played about 5 hours of this and could not continue. The combat abilities, the statistical growth, the game systems in general, were so shallow and boring and restrained, it sapped my will to play.
On a whim i started playing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and boy am i glad i did. SOOOO much more fun. The graphics might be less technically impressive but it lets you be like 7 different kinds of god and the story changes based on which source of power you opt to go for. The level of mechanical depth is very satisfying and overall i find it infinitely more enjoyable than BG3.
So if like me, you tried bg3 and were disappointed or underwhelmed, give wrath of the righteous a try.
WOTR is excellent, but it can be such a slog at times.

I'll be honest, one of my oddest complaints is the copious amounts of cursing in the game.
When I think tabletop RPG, I still think of people trying to speak in broken "ye olde english" - these characters speak like half-drunk college students around a table playing characters. While this hits for a lot of people, it breaks my immersion and reminds me of how far we've departed from the world of BG1+2. Take this as you will by the way. The characters speak like players of an RPG, rather than like characters of a fantasy world - for better and worse.
Yeah, dialogue writing is pretty bad these days. Everyone wants the Marvel snark everywhere. It's very juvenile; it's the kind of thing you THINK is mature at 13 when you first start using curse words and thinking about boobs, but cringe at as an adult. The writers are grown children who spend all their free time on Tinder and Tik Tok.

There's a shocking number of women in heavy armor in this game, in martial roles. I don't mind them existing, I'll grant some degree of leniency for the fantasy setting, but it did look ridiculous to see groups of guards made up entirely of small, ethnically diverse women in some piss-ant town.
Emasculating men is as much the goal.

I like that you can *try* to romance every character, but realistically they shouldn't all reciprocate(also the romances being so fast was a "bug they patched").

Gale's entire plotline can be boiled down to the feminist idea that men are intimidated by and feel inadequate around "strong women." But that's the entire aspect of the writing in this game. There's no nuance, mystery or even thought required because they spoon feed you the entire way. It's like everyone involved in the "writers" room never read a book in their life.
Gale was stupid enough to carry a piece of corrupted weave that got embedded into his chest and Mystra told him to GTFO because if he had continued then he would have created a magical nuke and killed everything (a point that is hammered home even harder if your avatar is Gale).
How is that being intimidated?

I think what's always rankled me with a lot of RPGs, particularly recent ones, is that there's no real bro-tier friendship options for any of the main party members. A lot of the time, it's either bone-zone or no-zone. There's no middle ground at all. What if I liked Ghale but didn't want to ruin his arsehole? Where's my option to just go on an awesome bender and conduct a drunken heist for magical artefacts and have a grand old time? What if I want to raise all kinds of hell with Astarion but don't want to wake up the next morn in Sodomy Ave? Why can't I go on a wee murder spree with Lae'zel in the countryside and just laugh about it without tearing our clothes off like all that blood we've coated ourselves in was full of aphrodisiac instead of dark-age STDs? The only thing that comes close to what I'm on about that springs to mind is shooting bottles with Garrus in Mass fucking Effect 3. A post-ME *Bioware* title of all fucking things!
Indeed, Mass Effect 1-3 did a pretty good job of letting you be buds without fucking in MOST cases. Which is how it should be; write FRIENDSHIPS that you can CHOOSE to turn into relationships. Not the other way around.
You've got it right, my single biggest gripes with the game is honestly that the characters, and the game therein, are way too horny. Would much prefer that i cant sleep with the characters whatsoever and instead get actual character backstory that matters. along with that the story is... eh. Ketheric is phenomenal though, as expected of JK Simmons.

Never pay for a product upfront unless you can be assured of getting either exactly what you expected and asked for, a no-questions asked refund. It isn't relevant in the slightest what they tempt you with, whether it be a cool gun, a boatload of in-game currency, or a fancy hat. It's just digital tat. None of it matters. What matters is the gameplay, and if it's worth your investment of time and money.
No man should ever complain about losing money in a pre-order. Everyone knows giving them the money before the product is risky... stop crying when your foolishly spent money is wasted.

Hell, we're in a time where people will buy a game at launch, with the ability to read reviews, look up gameplay footage, etc. and _still_ whine about how "it's not what I expected" and scream "I paid money for this! I demand it be changed to suit my preferences!"
Pre-ordering is, universally, an act of stupidity. The backlash that ensues when one's own stupidity bites them in the ass is an act of entitlement.
@@Armameteus this actually hurt to read, i actively try to know as little as i can if i really want to play or watch something and sometimes i get burnt but i never get so upset to blame anything other than myself. People out there can be helpless. Mother truckers wont even read the description of the game.
