I don't think he's invited on a lot of big name shows, though. Hong Seok Cheon is the only out celebrity that I can think of that's actually on SBS/KBS/etc. variety shows. Holland, Somhein, MRSHLL-- They're all out, but they're not well known.
To everyone asking ‘Why didn’t they show Holland!’ They didn’t show him because he’s not that famous. There’s a reason they didn’t name when talking about openly out Koreans, and it’s because he’s not as popular in Korea. They’re trying to bring up people in Korea who the girls may know, Holland is not one of them.
Isn’t the point of this show to teach them and discuss about things they don’t know though? I would like to know about the minor lgbtq+ personalities we don’t see /hear much of, they could have just mentioned them, how else are they supposed to ever be acknowledged? I would guess it is more about what they want to tell in a short video format, perhaps? That they can’t cover everything, or wish to keep the videos short.

HOW did they not know Troy was gay? that's insane to me, he's been open for so long. And disappointing they didn't show more celebs being open, there's a LOT.
They've most likely not watched his music videos and only know him from the radio/charts. Most koreans don't know about foreign celebs’ private lives or drama and only recognize songs and not the singer. Also the language barrier makes it harder to pick up on lyrics that "hint" his sexuality, especially when you're only casually listening to it and not analyzing or looking up the lyrics
I dont even know who Troy is and I am from the West, well more specific Europe.... maybe I heard his songs on the radio. But some people just dont care about someones private life though...especially when it comes to celebs.
@@andrepires7687 not all koreans are conservative, a lot of them are very open minded especially the younger generations. There's no need to generalize koreans like this.
If you guys wanted more Out Korean Celebrities, there's Holland- who's gay, MRSHLL- who's gay, Aquinas- who's bisexual, and a few others. There's one that is asexual, I can't remember his name, though. Edit: there is also some girls that came out as bisexual, but one is problematic and was a bully, so I didn't put her there- another girl is Jiae, who is bisexual, and a rapper named SLEEQ
Holland has done interviews with Jaykeeout (youtube), Sam Hammington, and Andy Trieu. He also went public about being assaulted for being gay. It was written about on the Billboard website. His music videos are beautiful and very openly gay.
What about Holland, MRSHLL, Navinci (who is asexual), Harisu (trans), Maman (lesbian), Hanbit (trans), D.IP's Seungho, B.Nish and Hyeongseong, they're all part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Bcs they aren't famous... simple as that. openly gay people exist in Korea, including ones who aspire to be famous or are artists. But they aren't openly gay celebrities, purely bcs they aren't famous
I thought they were going to show people like Elton John, Jim Parsons, George Takei, Jane Lynch, Scott Thompson and Wanda Sykes. I still remember how badly the industry treated Max Wright (Willie from ALF) after he was outed. It was pretty much the end for him, until the ALF box sets got released. Next thing you know, he's smoking a fatty on his yacht with his boyfriend!
I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't put holland in this video. he's the first korean idol that has been open about being gay since pre-debut. even his debut song was about loving another man It would've been a good chance to talk about the dangers of being openly gay in korea (+ the importance of an anti-discrimination law) since he was hate crimed (verbally and physically assulted) in itaewon just last month

Holland, a singer from Korea is also openly gay. He displays this in his music videos. Sadly he was also recently attacked, a story which was mentioned even in a Billboard article.
Really good video and nicely handled by the girls - who do big topics like this so well. It's also a massive cultural difference between Korea and where I am in the UK - just outside London - where literally no one gives a toss. The only person I know who struggled to come out to his parents was my friend James - from a Muslim background - who didn't open up to his parents until he went to University. Then when he did? His dad's reaction was, "Thanks for admitting it. We've known for years". They've now got a great relationship.
i just saw someone else saying this in the comments: you guys should react to eugine lee yang's coming out video! you can make a separate video on it, it's on the "the try guys" channel
at least in my life experience, the people i know and go to school with don’t come out. it’s just something that pops in conversation and is completely normal. although i did come out to my parents and friends when i was very young, it’s not something i seem necessary to do nowadays with new friends. like recently, in class i was with two classmates and we were talking about relationships and i mentioned that i’m not straight. they both were like “really? ok then”.
Little Nas X was never in the closet as a famous person, was he? I didn't need any help knowing that he was a proud gay man. Nas wears his sexuality like a king wears his crown.
Uhm Hong-Sik, more commonly known as Actor Yoo Ah-In, is another openly gay celebrity in Korea. After being rumored to be gay on multiple occasions, he came out with his boyfriend through an Instagram post.
growing up, my parents took in my now brother who was a foster kid at that time.... he was 7 years old and very feminine... so no one really cared about that, at that tme i was 9 and already knew he was going to be gay lol now were both 22 and 20... hes a makeup artist and very supported by family and friends
I would've liked to ask them how they would react if their own kids came out to them. I'm most curious about that then their reaction to be honest. Currently, in Korea, lots of people would say that others should accept the bendings of some social norms such as sexual orientation but oftentimes they don't turn that scope unto themselves. Putting themselves in that situation and asking themselves if they could accept it. Only that others should accept it and omitting their own reaction or opinion. Like if it happens to someone else it's ok but if it happens to you, it's a problem now.
Not knowing Troy is gay must reflect some differences in what masculinity or straightness look like from culture to culture, because in the West it's immediately apparent that he's not straight.
wow though, like there are so many parents here that are accepting and not accepting but in korea their first thought is "I don't see how any parent wouldn't be upset". This shows such a cultural difference man.
3:49???? what? Troye's music videos is him and guys even making out, his lyrics are about guys and some about being gay too, he had a long time public boyfriend. And since 2013 he have been very very open about it. How can people know about him and not that he is gay? It's like not knowing Taylor Swift like guys, she also sings about guys and have them in her music videos and her relationships have been known public.
From what i’ve read he’s mostly popular among younger people (teens) in SK, and its likely that the girls in the vid may not be familiar with most of his work, or only know his songs (like Youth, or Fools, which a few idols have covered) which don’t use male pronouns or really explicitly state he’s gay? Not really sure but I can see how they wouldn’t know if they’ve only heard of him in passing.
Jiae from Wassup is an out bisexual woman, Yoojung from IOI/Weki Meki also said "I don't care about the gender, I care about the feeling" when asked her ideal type. Do your research, channel!!

The couples/cast is well picked, and the MC is also top-notch (Hani, Hong Seokcheon and Shin Dong Yup)!! I personally enjoyed the first ep!! "Man's Romance" (airs 15/7)on the other hand is like love catcher, heart signal, transit love etc. like any other Korean dating show BUT this time with ONLY Bi/Gay men participating!! You can find the trailers on Wavve's YT channel or their Twitter account!! ❤️Merry Queer (the other queer dating/couple show Wavve aired on July 8th) will premiere on Gagaoolala with English subs on July 15th!! So I am pretty sure something similar will happen with this one "Man's Romance" after it airs raw on Wavve on July 15th!! Though we will have to probably wait a week or two for it to appear on Gagaoolala! ❤️
I actually came out to my dad the other day but he started talking about religion and then he said why do I think that I'm gay and I told him that I like a girl and stuff and he was like no u don't ur just delusional u can't be attracted to the same sex... so I just agreed to whatever he said and I went to my room and kept crying. I actually dated the girl in secret but when he found out he did not speak to me for 3 months until the day that I lied to myself and told my self to just be straight and told him that I like guys and then we started talking again.
I know It can be difficult but you shouldn't pretend to be someone you're not. Try to make your dad understand that this is who you are and that it's not a choice. I hope it's going well now
I am sorry that you are having a hard time. I don’t know how old you are, but time passes more quickly than you think. You will eventually surround yourself with people who accept and welcome the whole of you. In the meantime, be patient with your dad. He probably believes he is helping you.
You all keep talking about Hong Seok Cheon, but you know... you also have Go Tae-seob (고태섭), professionally known as Holland (홀랜드). He's a South Korean singer and recently starred in the web series "Oceans Like Me". I'm sure there are a thousand more that haven't come out yet, but Holland is openly gay and in the entertainment industry in South Korea.
I hope they have a part 2 of this topic because there are few more SK artists that came out as gay for example Holland and yes I know he's not as big of a celebrity but he's getting there because he just did a BL called "The Ocean Likes Me" it's really good show and he even sang the OST for it too.
There are more Korean celebrities/singers who are openly gay (Jiae, Holland). I'm a little surprised they didn't talk about them too. Holland was just assaulted on the street recently for being gay. I think talking about that would have helped show the drastic differences between Korea and the West more
Well hate crimes happen in the west as well, especially in USA where hate crimes happen more than S. Korea, so that wouldn't really have shown difference between west and east.
I am straight-leaning gynosexual (think bisexual, but specifically feminine people, more trans > gay) and sexuality is like preference. You can't make somebody like the opposite or same sex anymore than making somebody like fat, skinny, short, or tall people. Nobody controls their attraction, it isn't a decision. Only whether or not you act on it is. Just because I am diabetic doesn't mean I hate the taste of sweets.
Its a bit funny that for the West almost if not always just the US is used. I guess for Korea it is the most known country from the West. Generally in the West, be it the american continent or the european there is still a lot of work to do when it comes to LGBTQ. Sure, we improved a lot but not enough. My country is one tiny european country and at least on paper predominantly catholic which makes it a bit harder for the LGBTQ community. The younger people I would say are more open than the older folks, but I guess that goes for a lot of countries, due to the generational difference. Compared to the East the West is just more vocal about things, be it LGBTQ issues, feminism, sexism, racism, whatever the case may be. We also have very conservative places and cultural differences but generally speaking even that doesnt hold us back to be vocal about social issues. I believe that is the only way to make a progress in society. I hope that in the East certain groups of people will have it easier as well.

I can only imagine the struggle and difficulties LGBTQIA+ people have to go through not only in accepting themselves but also to speak openly about it to family and friends. To this day there are many acts of violence towards these people and I wish more laws to be implemented to make LGBTQIA+ community feel safe in their school, family, work environment. If you are one of these people and are in the closet reading this comment, I want to say that you DESERVE to be who you want to be and love whoever you want, it’s NOT a fault being gay or trans. I hope for a better and more understanding world to come and that you can all be free to be who you want to be 🏳️🌈 happy pride month 🏳️🌈
The thing people have to remember is that South Korea is a conservative country, which is not a bad thing, and that it was only 66 years ago that South Korea had television. If anything, I am shocked at how fast South Korea has grown, of course with the help of social media. Also while male and female same-sex sexual activity is legal in South Korea, marriage or other forms of legal partnership are not available to same-sex partners. South Korea also provides no anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people, nor does it prohibit hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity. If people, especially celebrities come out their entire lives could be ruined and if caught having sexual relations they could be legally charged with rape or molestation, even if it is consensual, sentencing them to two years in prison. Nowadays many Korean citizens under the age of 30 are more accepting it is the older generation and the law that are not as much. Wow, I didn't mean to write a paragraph but I just wanted people to know a bit of the history of South Korea and understand that even though it is sad it is commendable the fast progress that has been made.
it still took a shitload of courage for him to come out and it takes five seconds to learn someone's name and occupation. they showed them jodie foster and they had no idea who she was so what does it matter. so sick of this dumb take
It's interesting how open minded most of the world is. Since I'm straight man I have a lot of questions but that's just my curiosity 😂..but I love the fact that most parents and family members are very understanding and I think that's what really matters most
I like a lot of Korean things, like their language, music, tv shows, movies, fashion, skin care, etc. They show themselves as really cool to the rest of the world. But one thing I feel sad and sorry about is their thinking (at least most of them) about LGBTQIA because it's still very "prehistoric". Like a lot of Asian countries, they are still having a hard time accepting this. I just feel sorry for those who want to come out but can't or just decided to not come out entirely because of the situation of how things are in their country or fear of what people, especially their family, might say. You can never be truly happy and feel real whole if you can''t be yourself. I hope in the future every LGBTQIA person there in Korea will get full support from their community and families and their country.. or just migrate some place else lol..

Unfortunate for people who hide who they are because it not only hurts the individual but those who they need to hide in the closet like getting married to the opposite sex without them knowing can be very painful marriages etc..
it would have been great if you had shown more people in this video, it was very short. and more diverse ones at that. from the west there were no poc at all. also they were all US-american, but the west includes more countries than just the US. from korea you really could have shown e.g. holland and quite a couple of others listed in the comments here.
I still don't think Minji is 100% comfortable reacting to gay things.. and they react to gay videos quite often. She seems over it lol. Cha-cha is like a chameleon with her reaction and whoever she's with. S Korea has grew so much in the past 10 years. They are still battling with women equality let alone race or sexuality. Ik ben daarom blij dat ik Nederlands ben en dat ik de kans heb om überhaupt vrij te denken in korea zijn er veel mensen die er niet eens achter komen of ze lgbtq zijn, omdat het nooit als een optie werd gezien.

Why not show holland? He's an openly gay korean singer
Hexwas harrassed at the street a few days ago. So sad
I don't think he's invited on a lot of big name shows, though. He has a drama and I think he's done a few youtube videos, but aside from being known as an openly gay singer, he isn't really that famous. Hong Seok Cheon is the only out celebrity that I can think of that's actually on SBS/KBS/etc. variety shows. Holland, Somhein, MRSHLL-- They're all out, but they're not well known.

he's not really famous in korea
@@user-fc8mf2is4b he is pretty famous and has many popular friends celebrities like Yeri from Red Velvet, Wonho etc
Nah that's a lame excuse. Why wasn't Yoojung from Weki Meki shown? IOI was one of the biggest kpop girl groups of all time LOL. Fact is they didn't bother doing their research.

Koreans are very conservatives and don't care about those topics.
I dont even know who Troy is and I am from the West, well more specific Europe.... maybe I heard his songs on the radio. But some people just dont care about someones private life though...especially when it comes to celebs.

It would've been a good chance to talk about the dangers of being openly gay in korea (+ the importance of an anti-discrimination law) since he was hate crimed (verbally and physically assulted) in itaewon just last month

How did they not show Holland? He's openly gay and was recently a victim of a hate crime because of it.
Even though internationally people are more likely to know him, he’s not popular. They were trying to show Korean celebs they would know about.

Uhm Hong-Sik, more commonly known as Actor Yoo Ah-In, is another openly gay celebrity in Korea. After being rumored to be gay on multiple occasions, he came out with his boyfriend through an Instagram post.
Omg I didn't know this-
growing up, my parents took in my now brother who was a foster kid at that time....
he was 7 years old and very feminine... so no one really cared about that, at that tme i was 9 and already knew he was going to be gay lol
now were both 22 and 20... hes a makeup artist and very supported by family and friends

I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I hope you can be yourself one day and your father starts accepting you for who you are!

@@sambatra6162 I know hate crimes happen but I was specifically talking about celebrities since that's what the video was about
I am straight-leaning gynosexual (think bisexual, but specifically feminine people, more trans > gay) and sexuality is like preference. You can't make somebody like the opposite or same sex anymore than making somebody like fat, skinny, short, or tall people. Nobody controls their attraction, it isn't a decision. Only whether or not you act on it is. Just because I am diabetic doesn't mean I hate the taste of sweets.
I remember when a fan told Troye Sivan to prank call his mom and tell her he got a girl pregnant. His mom started laughing right away 😂
Are you from Italy? Because it sounds so by your description.

It’s really a shame that Holland and MRSHLL wasn’t introduced here since they’re both openly gay singers in Korea. Especially Holland.
