The chemistry between Liz Montgomery and Dick York was _so_ fantastic. When they had emotional scenes like this, I *genuinely believed* they were in love.
Witch craft or no, though, ain't *no way* a woman that _just_ gave birth is gonna look _that_ spectacular!

@@harperstacey9604 Well it's obvious they are both talented performers, friend. However, Dick Sargent was also a fine thespian....but he _neeeeeeeeeever_ had the same flow, the same naturalness, the same energy or spark that was present between these two. That had little to do with pure skill; it's more akin to a natural rapport, and its part of the magic that made these earlier seasons , in the opinion of many, far more classic and enjoyable than the latter ones.

    • @harperstacey9604

@@Shenruss I know. When Dick Sargent took over the role of Darrin, it wasn't the same. He didn't have the charm or spark like Dick York. Many fans felt the difference.

    • @Shenruss

@@harperstacey9604 Exactly my point. DS had the whole "curmudgeonly, frustrated, put-upon and somewhat stiff husband" aspect of Darrin down to a _T,_ don't get me wrong. And this came through in his portrayal; in some regards, he actually did it _better_ than DY, whose take on the character seemed more..."anxiously exasperated, wide eyed in panic and about to crack" . This was funnier in the earlier seasons, given the difference in time period and sensibilities (early "Norman Rockwell 60s" vs the "Swinging 60s"), true. However, if you think about it....in a way, this type of evolution for the same "character" of Darrin Stevens kind of makes sense...
DY's Darrin got all the fresh Hell from Sammi's family, well... _fresh!_ From the time they were newlyweds especially, till well after Tabby was born, the guy almost *never* got a break! Everyday, he could expect *something* bad or unexplainable to happen to him...but he could never tell _what_ it would be! Top it off, Larry was kind of .... I won't say "harder on him", but sort of "Expected more" of him" as a younger man in the less liberated earlier part of the 60s. That kind of cosmic-level uncertainty would _naturally_ leave such a rigidly structured, old-fashioned guy perennially "on edge" a lot of the time.
If you'll notice though, by the time Tabitha was born, Darin had started having fewer "whiplash emotional outbursts." Oh, they would _happen,_ sure, but it would usually have to be something more than Endora just being "magically mother in law bitchy" ----hell, even getting sent back in time to save Samantha and _nearly getting killed in a sabre duel_ only made him faint. And that episode was in year 3 or 4, I think. So yeah, by that time he'd gotten a _little_ more accustomed to the constant craziness the witching world and his in-laws would put upon him.
By the time DS came on the scene, in real life, Darrin and Samantha had been married... what was it, a full five years, six?.... Not only had they overcome various supernatural obstacles, they had gone through several serious _mortal_ relationship issues and were the parents of 2 young kids. He was well invested in taking care of her, and their family.
And by _this_ point, Darrin had been jinxed juju-ed, hexed, cursed, spelled, screwed over, shrunk, pranked, disintegrated, de-aged, werewolf-ized, given pregnancy pains, teleported, tripped through time, body morphed, evaporated, nearly frozen, roasted on a spit, changed into everything from a chimp to bird to a dog to a warthog, and had both his job _and_ his sanity put in danger *so many times* both accidently and purposefully, that he would likely no longer _be surprised_ when some shit went down via Endora, Aunt Clara, Maurice, one of Sam's other relatives/old boyfriends, or even Sammi herself!
After going through SO DAMN MUCH with no end in sight, _anybody_ would likely go from "Oh F@%!, what NOW?!?!?" to "Oh jeez, man, again? What now..." And I personally think DS's more mature, disgruntled take on Darin reflected this growth; he was never gonna leave Sammi and his family, so he _knew_ some next shit was _gonna happen_ every other day. He'd basically resigned himself to the fact that he'd never have a "normal" life, so he would naturally be less prone to DY's type of in-the-moment "freak out." Sam and Darrin were also older, so while obviously dedicated and still in love with each other, that natural passion from their earlier years, while still there, probably would have "cooled" a little bit with he daily grind of kids, home and work... again, that kind of natural growth makes a lot of sense.
In a more meta sense, DY was noted as thinking Elizabeth M was very attractive in real life, and it was said they worked well together (all though his friendship with Agnes Moorehead was said to be stronger, actually.) Concurrently, DS was purported to be gay in RL, so he naturally wouldn't have been as attracted to her as Darrin 1.0 would have; chemistry like that is palpable, an can come across on screen.
What I'm more referring to in _this_ scene though, isn't their attraction to each other, but the _genuine connection_ that comes across from the joy they seem to have in creating and sharing this new little life. He looked at her the way I remember looking at my girlfriend years ago when she said she maybe pregnant, that total "You are _the_ most beautiful thing I have seen on this earth; thank you for being in my life" vibe and her "Your the man that made me a mother... I feel so blessed being by your side" reaction is not really something you see a lot of pairs pull of _nearly_ as well on screen. That's more than "passion", their _bond_ felt genuinely real, even watching this clip years later.
Good as they are acting together never, *ever* caught anything like that between her and Darrin version 2.

Back then there was no way a woman that just had a baby was going to look so AWAKE. They were still almost knocking women out while the baby was being born back then. They would give them an injection that put them in a state of "twilight sleep" where they were still conscious, but so loopy they didn't really understand or remember what was happening. It would take several hours for it to wear off, and it was frequently the next day before a woman actually got to hold her baby. There WERE exceptions made for natural childbirth and nursing mothers, but only in certain hospitals, and with prior arrangements.

I don't know. In real life, mothers commonly bleed, scream, curse, pee, fart, poop, and puke, and the vaginal tissue tears. Even though those things are both natural and completely understandable, it may not be the way a woman wants her husband to see her. It also may cause the father to get sick, faint, or go a little crazy. Which could cause attention to be diverted from mom and baby and onto him. It may make you feel all warm and fuzzy picturing dad pitching in. But real life birthing is bloody and shocking.

She is scaring him with her closing bye comment. Lol Poor guy levitating bottles. Give him a heart attack in worrying why don't ya Sam?! Lol like you supposed to talk to the baby not to expose herself that she is magic. Lol Like anyhow, her powers not till later. She was just born. Lol.

Give him a heart attack? She's the one who just gave birth and you're worried about him? Why would he worry his wife like that as if his daughter being a witch matters? He talks to Sam as if what she is is a bad thing! That's what you say to your wife and are concerned about right after she gave birth to your child?!

Hospitals are great at stealing your baby away and keeping them in a seperate room after birth. That's the worse thing that can happen to a newborn baby. It's completely the wrong thing to do. Keep the baby and mother together.
