It's not quite the same thing. Darren had no idea he had access to magic at all, it was kind of an entrapment...and Sam could easily have checked on things rather than listen to Endora, who by now she _knows_ she cannot trust where her husband is concerned.

Warlock is the proper term in Bewitched.
They did an episode on that actually, around season one I think. Sam gifted Darren the ability to perform magic because he was driving her crazy with errands when he broke his leg. I'm not going to spoil what happens though, so you'll need to find the episode.

I love this show ! I always have BUT I never liked how she had to hide who she really was and that Darren forbid her from using her powers. Most of the time. I loved how she would sneak it in from time to time. If I was married to a Witch, I'd be like " Honey let's pop over to the Bahamas for the weekend."😂
He had fear of losing her to the government to either weaponizing or for some scientific experiments, and the revival of witch trials on her and Tabitha like in that one episode.
I’d be afraid if government or took away my spouse for being a witch cause it frightened the neighbors especially those devout neighbors.

@@bbeyez It’s her choice to marry him actually the mother and father kept trying to convince her otherwise not to marry him, but she still did magic anyways when her family randomly appeared to cause mischief (intentionally and unintentionally). It was her choice to wanted the mortal life and he knew what he was getting into when he asked.
Honestly it would pretty awesome to be married to a witch (a Betwitched/Sabrina witch) the Charmed witches on the other hand I’ll have to consult the insurance agent every time a demon blew up in the house.

Did anyone else see Endora's face when Darrin almost wished she would stay away forever? She looked genuinely frightened for a moment. Endora got off lucky.
For the people who hate Darren and say he doesn't love Sam, they should think hard about that one: Darren had an opportunity to remove the bane of his existence from his life...and passed it up for Sam's sake. He's by no means perfect, but he does love her.
That’s called great acting, these classically trained veteran actors were all brilliant in this scene, and on this show.
She had back up in Samantha so nothing to fear from Darwin.

It doesn't matter how much my tastes have changed over the years, when I watch this again 50 odd years later, she is still absolutely beautiful.

perfect example here of how much Darrin really loved Samantha. He could have been rid of Endora forever with the second wish, but he knew how much it would have hurt Samantha. but I would have wished for at least a month.

The expression on Endora's face right before he wished her away..... priceless. NO ONE could play her except Agnes Moorehead. In fact, I don't think this show would have been very successful without her.

Darrin is so hilarious with his eyes bulging out of his head when he gets angry. And I love the banter between him and Endora. The whole cast in this show are very good actors. It's still one of my favourite sitcoms all these years later. 🤣👏

I can tell you one thing about Darren Stevens, he's not Captain James T. Kirk from "Star Trek" since merely everyone knows that he was definitely a womanizer. He's also not Gabriel Kotter from "Welcome Back Kotter" since Gabriel Kotter was never a womanizer.

OMG. This show was the best. I wouldn’t change a thing. Everyone had their own way of dealing with certain situations and I’m referring to how it was back then. You can’t compare it to today.
When she puts on that black dress & the wind starts blowing, Samantha means business... it looks good too

I also loved how he told Sam to be quiet and she's actually surprised to see that side of him.
@@orangefox1231 Normally Darren is a pretty easy-going guy (yeah, he doesn't like magic...but let's face it, he has some reason), but right here he's got every right to be somewhat angry.
His wife convicted him of cheating on her, on rather slim evidence, based on the input of Endora, who she _knows_ she can not trust where her husband is concerned. Sam could have double-checked what was going on very easily, but instead she jumped to the worst possible conclusion.
Yeah, Darren has some right to be irritated.
@@shermanlee4037 Darrin Stephens was the most tested and tortured man on TV and he passed every single one. Women were throwing themselves at him for 8 seasons and he never wavered, his mother in-law tortured him with witchcraft and he still stood by Sam when any normal man would've divorced her and moved on from her insane family.
Endora actually looks frightened that Darrin might banish her forever.
She was a great actress.
Third wish: Endora can never again use her magic on Darrin.
Suddenly Bewitched runs out of story ideas and is cancelled.
Wishes have to be worded carefully. If he wished she could never use magic on him. She could still use her magic to cause mischief so long as the magic isn't cast on Darrin's person. His clothes and everything around him she could still use magic on just so long as she doesn't cast directly at the human body.
Knowing Endora that wouldn't be the end of it though. There were several times in the series where she got someone else to do her bidding because she "promised" Samantha she wouldn't do anything to Darrin

These scenes are fantastic! Take note sitcoms of today--- you DON'T need garbage humor to be funny. Just good actors/actresses and excellent writing!! FIFTY YEARS LATER and it STILL holds up!

Probably my favorite moment in the whole series; it's right up there with Endora's powers going to Aunt Clara. I LOVE IT when Darrin says, "I WISH YOUR MOTHER WAS RIGHT HERE (and the accompanying sound effects of the horns......ha!)!!!!"
The special effects in this show were fantastic considering this was the 1960's...

I was six years old during the changing of the Darrins during the '68-'69 season, and I remember being a little confused as to why Darrin looked a little different. I recall noticing how much different the cartoon depictions of the two were in the show's opening theme. Definitely can't fool a six-year-old with cartoon figures! I also remember thinking that the second Darrin definitely wasn't as nice as the first.
Yeah dick sergeant seemed always mad at Samantha.
The line in the first episode where Sam was distracted and Darren tried to get a kiss from her and he said “are you alright?” And she said yes why? And he said I had more passionate kisses from my father. 😭😭🤣🤣🤣 that line cracks me up every time.

I think it wasn't that he didn't accept her; many episodes he said helped her the way she was and wouldn't change anything about her. I think it was more that he didn't want to get anything without having worked for it, even if it was a cup of tea. He didn't want any shortcuts.

4:25 Interesting point...Darren was about to say 'forever'. Which might have meant that Endora and Sam would _never_ see each other again, even long after Darren was dead...
I think that's why Endora was against the marriage. Darrin would be dead on the blink of an eye in a witch's lifetime, and perhaps Adam and Tabitha would be subject to shorter lifespans despite being a warlock and witch respectively. They could have been born mortal as well, and Samantha could have outlived them all. I think Endora was trying to spare Samantha that possible heartache.
@@RoverBoy1899 That might have been a factor, but it was also pretty clear that a lot of it was just plain disdain and contempt for beings they considered inferior.
Notice that a few of the witches didn't share it, Uncle Arthur didn't seem to look down on mortals particularly, and he pranked everybody equally. Aunt Clara didn't seem to look down on mortals, and even Darren got along with Clara.
But Maurine, Endora, most of the others clearly held mortals in deep contempt, except maybe for the wealthiest and highest-status. Endora did seem to like to hobnob with royalty and nobles, and I recall an episode where Endora told Sam that if she had to marry a mortal, she could at least have chosen a 'superior sort of mortal' (her words, IIRC) like a rich chum of Darren's.

@@shermanlee4037 I also think their contempt and possible hatred of mortals stems from the way mortals acted towards witched. Salem witch trials anyone? I am sure they happened in Europe too. Not that any mortal could get to a witch, but just the notion that mortals wanted witches to be persecuted and killed just for existing had to be horrible.
@@sosumi_rogue Endora has a line in an episode where she tells Samantha her great Aunt Agnes was judged during the salem witch trials.
When a beautiful woman like Samantha knows she screwed up big time, and now has to make it up to you - anyway you want.
I honestly would have left Darrin a long time ago. He doesn't think before he speaks, has never accepted Samantha for who she is, and has yelled at her for the dumbest things. I love love love the show, but he deserves to be threatened the way she did.
Yeah, but you gotta look at the times then. Even Fred Flintstone yelled at Wilma! Haha The Honeymooners yelled too. Now Dick VanDyke didn't yell but Tony did to Genie.
He also disliked her relatives, except for Aunt Clara. Everything Endora etc did to him he deserved and I agree with Endora, Samantha was too good for him.
Perhaps this is good episode, then, in that it depicts Samantha completely in the wrong. She was prepared to leave Darren based entirely upon what she and her mother assumed, but couldn't prove.
And Darren proved that he was completely innocent of what Samantha accused him of.
Perhaps Samantha, as a witch, is not truly a human being, but this episode still shows she is as flawed as any of us.
@@annatribe4244 regarding his dislike of her relatives, I think a lot of it's justified. Although I will give you that he provoked Endora at their first meeting, so she, perhaps, has good reason for disliking him.
However, Maurice hadn't even met Darren and he came to their home, destroying their furnishings and other objects around the house and threatening Darren. Again, before he'd even met Darren.
Just what distinguishes Maurice from a common terrorist? And you might think that Darren is a racist for his contempt for witchcraft, but is Maurice any less so for his hatred of mortals?
And let's not forget the time when Maurice saved Tabitha from being abducted by Endora, Hagitha and Enchantra. Samantha was expressing her gratitude for her father's intervention, and Darren quite politely said, "I'd like to thank you, too, sir."
And Maurice responded to Darren's sincere expression of gratitude with roiling contempt. Maurice was cool for saving Tabitha, but he's also a raging dickhead.
When Uncle Arthur met Darren for the first time -- when he barely even knew Darren -- he played a hugely sadistic and humiliating prank on him.
And just how many times did Serena torment Darren by impersonating Samantha?
So, perhaps Darren does dislike most of her relatives, but they've given him more than adequate reason.

Endora gave Darrin three wishes in the season two episode DOUBLE TATE. In both episodes he didn't know it. In DOUBLE TATE he used them, the first two wishes didn't get him into trouble, the last one did. In this episode, Darrin didn't use them, but Endora planted the seeds of mistrust, but truth and love won in the end. Oh, Darrin did use his third wish, which got him a second shower, with his clothes on. 🙂

Bewitched was a great show I never thought I would be able to see it
One of the few times she lost faith in Darrin and he stood up to both of them beautifully. He ends up accidentally using his third wish for a joke in the final scene of the episode. Personally, I would have used it to make Sam make up for doubting me. Of course that scene would not have made it past the censors.
I don't think he needs magic to do that. My guess is that Sam made it up to him in a big way all night long.

2 shows about mortal men hooked up with supernatural women. Both shows could benefit from an HBO-ready re-boot.
The key to a re-boot is finding the actors/actresses to play the key roles, especially the lead actresses. How does one replace the beloved Elizabeth Montgomery? Some think that's one reason why the movie didn't do well.
But they're going to try again. Sony is in the process of putting together another movie, this time it'll take place where the series ended. Let's hope they find a cast as good the original.

Real Love: Darrin was devoted to Samantha and Samantha was devoted too Darrin.
One of the funniest bits between them with her being wrong and his proving he was right and her realizing she had messed up, listening to her mother.
He should have sent Endora away for a month, but never mind. She really needed to be flabbergasted more than a week.

My mom still has her old hard American Tourister luggage. It's been banged around since the 60s from Honduras to the US and still looks amazing!

OK, so in the Season 4 episode ("To Twitch Or Not To Twitch") where it's a repeat of the packing, Darrin asks Sam where she's going. Her reply "Tabitha and I are going home to Mother".
I guess in this episode, Darrin would have been responsible for Tabitha if Sam left?

I just realized that scene is refurbished from one in the first season with the suitcases going around him. He said the same thing as well.
I think Darrin was about to wish that Sam would always wear that flying suit around the house.

Samantha was awful to Darrin, believing her mother over her husband, when she knew how Endora despised him, and would have done anything to break them up.
You shouldn't do that once you are married, something Sam never learned.
She is married to Darrin, NOT her mother!!
