I too pack a big bin of everything for road trips with a side of crochet.😂 So glad I'm not the only maximalist traveler out there. It's marvelously luxurious to never worry about being limited by lack of just the one perfect supply. When I travel by air I use the big suitcase for mostly art stuff, and clothes go in the carry on bag. What is the dip pen nib with the big reservoir? It looks like a handy tool. I mostly use the aquarelle oil pastels as an underpainting for larger oil pastel paintings. I t seems to make layering easier, and I usually dip the tip into a bit of water so it lays down smoother and avoids crumbling if not pressed too hard. Definitely love the neocolor 2 more, but the mungyo were super cheap here, and easier for bigger areas. Have a lovely visit and bon voyage!
A woman after my own heart! Love it! The dip pen nib is the Brause Blue Pumpkin, to which I added a reservoir pinched from a different nib. It's pretty flexible but reliable, and my all time favourite calligraphy nib! Bought it just in case I fancied doing some calligraphy with watercolour paints. Thank you for the advice on how to use the pastels!!
Interesting video, that was an amazing bit of packing to get all those supplies so neatly into that box. Much better than wising for the one thing you didn’t bring, especially as you’re going to be away for six weeks. I thought the Mungyo water soluble pastels were very disappointing. I’ll be sticking to my neo colour 2.
I'll definitely be happy knowing I've got more stuff on hand than less! Yes, I need to try and work out if I'm using them wrong, or if they're dried up or something. There's no question the Neocolor II's are lovely though!
6:20 i put my gouache in the children's watercolor palette box, which is very slim by height, but pretty wide so i have a lot of space for mixing on the inside of the lid. The gousche took several days to dry out so it won't mive, but it's mot so dry that i can't use it. I like it because I don't have to take the full big box if gouache now
French countryside sounds like the perfect destination for exploring a fun toy box…er toolbox full of art goodies 😉. What good is a road trip if you can’t bring the fun stuff! I’ve had those WS Mungyo’s for years, so a toddle off to give them a swatch and mine are creamier than yours, very few splashy bits, and they dissolve relatively easily. I noticed they changed the wrappers…makes me wonder if they reformulated? Bummer. Maybe they will perform better, soften in the countryside sun? I like them for underpainting/blocking in. Then the regular Mungyo’s atop. I really like my neo II’s but I’ve supplemented them with the full Lyra set as they help beef up the all important greens. That’s a nice quilt you’ve got going too. Hope you manage to squeeze everything i around your toolbox!
I seem to be having a different experience from others who have them! And I don't think it's the paper or me being heavy handed which have been suggested. They are quite different from what I was expecting which almost never happens with the art materials I research and buy. I didn't even bring them to France. You should see the car!! 'Well packed' is one way of putting it 😂
Oh, I just received my new Mungyo that looks exactly like these on the video, I am not enjoying them, they are not smooth or easy to dissolve, not really a fan at the moment, hopefully my opinion changes after a bit of time... Thank you for the video.. ❤
I love mungyo. I have their oil pastels and water soluble oil pastels. Love them both. I was going to get their water soluble wax crayons, but I've been told the neocolor II are much more satisfying to use. For the price they better be. Well, at any rate, have a great trip.
I know you said you use oil pastel for only a few light details, but have you ever blended them in the way I did with both the regular oil pastels and water soluble ones? I'm just curious if you found the water soluble ones don't blend well? I'm trying to work out if they aren't supposed to be blended.
Mungyo has water soluble wax crayons?! I've never seen that! I have their soft pastels, both the handmade, and the affordable mini sticks, also their oil pastels, the Gallery, and the water soluble oil pastels. But I havent seen those you mention!
Really fabulous and handy comparison. Thanks to your "haul" vids I've been bingeing on this week (have Covid), Ive ordered both the Neocolour II 30 pack and the Mungyo 24 pack this week! Watching your channel is costing me a fortune as I've also ordered quite a few bits and pieces you've recommended (card making blanks, Posca pens, Flashe Paints, Australian Abstract book, Neocolours, Mungyo, Holbein Gouache 😆. My husband thinks I'm buying birthday presents 🙄😉. Not sure how the affiliate links work but I've ordered all from Amazon Australia after switching from your link to my Amazon home page here. Anyhoo, hope it works. Same with Jacksons, I have to switch to the Australian page (which has 50% of the products you have listed in the UK). Okay, thanks again. You have no idea how much happiness you've brought to me this week. Really tough week so much appreciated 😊😚

Gosh you will be able to open a pop up art shop whilst in France. You are extremely organised, and that's why I love watching you. I find it is relaxing. Have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday and I will look forward to seeing the results of all those art supplies. Have fun.
I need to go through my rubber stamp collection and see which ones may work well with watercolour… what an excellent idea!! Loved seeing everything you packed! At first, your tote made me chuckle, but honestly, if I were going for 6 weeks and knew I’d have lots of down-time/me-time for art, I’d take a tote as well. Car trips feel so luxurious in terms of packing because you don’t have to be so restrictive and can take whatever you want! Looking forward to seeing the art you create… safe travels 😊.
I'm in the mood to enjoy watercolours in quite a simple way - swatching and simple splodges, and I just thought the stamps might work with that. Glad to know you'd take a lot too! Thank you!
I'm starting to wonder if my set is a bit dried up or something - I seem to have a different experience from others who have them. Well yes I did, but I have also forgotten to bring hiking boots, or any jumpers, so far!! (And my husband forgot his toothbrush!) We remembered the kids and dog though, so 👍

As always I love to see all your supplies (even though I’m content with a much smaller range of stuff). Although having said that I’m content with what I’ve got, I did rush off to search for a similar colour wheel pin badge! Haha. Now I need to make a decision between buying a cheaper one on Temu, but need to also buy extra items to make up a big enough order, or buying a more expensive one on Amazon, so it’s currently sat in 2 baskets hahaha.
I'm surprised you had those issues with the water soluble oil pastels. I haven't had any of those problems with mine. Maybe it depends on the paper being used. I'm very curious now.
All my other oil pastels work beautifully on this paper though. Does anyone know if these water soluble oil pastels swatch out/blend very differently from normal oil pastels?
Not being very “material” literate I didn’t realise until watching that pastels could be used with water. Like your travel selection, you’re lucky you’ve decided! It would take me ages & I’d probably take much more, especially knowing the car was taking us! Thanks.Have a good trip! I don’t own the pastels but as you swatched them my thoughts were, don’t think Helen likes them too much, so wasn’t surprised when they went in niece, nephew box, lucky nieces & nephews! Thanks.

@@helencryer Just Reading a Book on drawing that mentioned a variety of Pastel types, there’s definitely ones thatcan be used with water, which you’ve proved!
What is the difference between Watercolor crayons and water soluble oil pastels? I’m wanting a set but have no clue which. I mainly color in coloring books
The only things I've used which might be called watercolour crayons are Caran D'Ache Neocolor II's. I didn't end up liking the two sets of water soluble oil pastels I tried, they were a bit dry and bitty and inconsistent across the range, but the Neocolor II's although they are quite hard too, release pigment much more easily and are very rich and smooth. I definitely prefer those.
To the touch they are quite like wax crayons, but the lay down is a bit creamier, though they seem to vary from one colour to another - some are harder than others. The hard ones are more difficult to blend with. Regular (non water-soluble) oil pastels are much easier to blend.
Lol 😂- I can identify with wanting to take all your art supplies - just in case… I always want to be prepared for any kind of creative itch that might happen. I hope you have a really lovely time. Safe travels!
Well, I wasn't overly impressed with the water soluble oil pastels. If by the other brand, you mean the Neocolor II's, then for me the difference is in the freedom you have in laying them down, and in the different textures and marks you can get with them. You then have the option to leave them heavily opaque or wash some or all of them out into gorgeous vivid watercolour. They're like chunkier more opaque watercolour pencils.
Holy cow. Are you moving and only packing your art supplies or are you running away from home? I don't care where you are going or for how long, you don't need all that lmao. I'm jealous. Of course you can. If you want to ram them into the tooth you go right ahead, but I don't think it's fair to the product to judge them as a harder pastel or fair to yourself. If we continue to chase our trails with the supplies we won't enjoy using them.
Thanks ever so much for the advice, although I successfully use oil pastels to do whole paintings, where all the tooth is filled - I've happily used Mungyo and Sennelier oil pastels in that way. The problem with these Mungyo water soluble ones was that even without much pressure, they produced a lot of crumbs. I'm actually wondering if they have dried out more than they're supposed to be.
