How To Zero Your Rifle To 100 Yards In Your Kitchen

  • I sat down at my kitchen table and zeroed my rifle again, but now with using math and you can too! Watch this short video (and read below) to learn how.
I could’ve explained somethings a little better. So read below for some clarification on what I discussed in this video.
Note: Measure your paper distance from the scope turrets not the muzzle.
The center of the reticle to the center of the bore is 1.75”
I’m zeroing to 100 yards so I divide 1.75” by 100 which equals 0.0175. This means over every yard of travel, the gap between my scope center and my bore center decreases by 0.0175” until it reaches 0 (100yards). So at 1 yard, the gap between the marks on my paper should be 1.7325” to mimic that decrease. And at 1.5 yards that gap should be 1.72375”. Unfortunately, my digital calipers need a new battery or I definitely would have used them to set this measurement.

The Parallax at this short distance will destroy your plans. So long as you're hitting the paper at 25, 30, 50, for 100 yards you're good to go.

I always just setup at 30 yards and shoot three rounds. If I’m on paper then I can dial it in. Pretty much works every time. At this close range I shoot either 3 to 5 inches above center target. I’m done. Sighting your rifle made easy.

Touched on this but worth expanding. Under loading, the barrel flexes and odds are the harmonics are such that the bullet is leaving the barrel at a consistent but an ever so slight deflection relative to the relaxed barrel state. You might not even hit paper at 100yds. Always check zero with live fire. I've had rifles boresighted before that couldn't hit a man at 50yds.

Thanks for the insight there, to be fair though, the closer you make scope adjustments, the more margin for error there is at extended range.
If you were to place a bright 4" circle on a wall 25 /30 yds away outside and bore sight it that way, i bet you'll be closer with your first shot at 100.
Works well for me, only thing i do on the bech is level the scope with a plumb line drawn on the wall which i align the vertical part of my reticle with, once rifle is sat level with a bubble on the action.
Just did my 17hmr the other day with a digital scope, bore sighted at 27yd and froze thd screen, adjusted reticle then first shot 1 1/4" off the bull at 100.

This is not zeroing, it’s bore sighting. Two completely different things.

Use a golf ball. Set it outside your house at 100. Boresight adjust scope. Done.

    1. Find Caliber 2. Look up ballistic charts 3. Dial scope to zero 4. Adjust for range

Very interesting. How will you go about if you do it at 100 meters

Did it work when you went to 100yd range?

It wasn’t perfect, by any means but it was a good start.
In double checking after the range, instead of 1-3/4” between bore dot and scope dot, 2” seemed to be a more accurate offset with the scope fully zoomed out to 7x. It’s tough to read the 2” mark on the paper at 7x, but if everything is level and lined up this should get you close.
A range environment is definitely the true test.

Zero it at 35 yards and you will see its the best combat zero for 308

Do you know if this will work for a30-06 hunting rifle. this is the same I use for my AR and I absolutely love it but I’ve never used it on anything else

This is an old Marine Corps technique. When you are zeroed at 30 you are also zeroed at 300 because of the way the bullet travels.

Please redo your video, minus all your misleadind "waffle" and I will be able to understand you. I don't need to be misled by your uncomfortable shoulder, or the blue dot tape holding the paper. As the saying goes, 'KISS' - Keep It Short and Simple . Two minutes max is all you need, you're not making a Hollywood movie.

8" drop with a 50 yrd zero so adjust to rezero. Move scope up 8" to adjust for bullet drop to zero
