Ah very good video feels like old time you two riding together on video. What kind of shoes you sporting there Russ? I had success with the plastic bag, but heavy wool socks in a shoe that doesn't restrict blood flow worked best. I'd be tempted to go with winter boots and flat pedals up there. Kudos for the effort though. You'll be winter experts by spring time.
Excellent video. I'm glad to see you are learning to embrace the cold and snow. This will be my third winter that I'll be riding my bike. Bar mitts and layering are a good start. You might consider some sort of an over boot. Your feet might be getting cold because they are warm when starting off and get so warm during the ride and are perspiring. Wet feet will always cause problems due to cold and can lead to frostbite. The idea is to start off "comfortably cool" and then warm up while being active. Good luck in your search for the right combination.
Like you, I don't have a fat bike, or the budget for a fat bike :-( However, I have still enjoyed many years winter MTBing on my old hardtail MTB. Studded tires on a regular MTB work great as long as the snow isn't too deep. They are super affordable if you make them yourself (which is very easy to do). I use warm socks in my cycling shoes, thick neoprene booties over my shoes and my toes stay toasty warm. One last thought, winter biking at night is such fun.

I lost it when Laura started shaking her head at the heat update.
I found the best use of the aluminum foil is under the insole in the shoe. it's way more comfortable, cuts drafts coming through air vents, and does a tiny bit of radiating heat back up towards your foot.

Salsa better hurry up and send you guys some fat bikes (and some studded tires). Rode many winters without a fat bike, gotta say it's a lot more fun riding on snow with one. Just as an FYI when they start machine grooming the trails it's bad form to take skinny tires on them, no one likes ruts.
Bottom to top: Wool socks, leather waterproof boots, thermal lower and upper layer, 1-3 layers of leather mittens. More layers of clothing if you're cold.
Specialized Defroster shoes + wool socks keep my feet warm. Don't keep them in a cold garage before the ride, bring them inside for a few hours so they're warm when you put them on.
I remember when I first saw those bar mitts but on a kayak paddle. They are called pogies (or maybe that's the brand??). Anyways, I thought they were a gimmick at first but quickly learned they work wonders!
I loved the music on this clip. Huge fan of the bar mitts. For feet- Lake 303s. Pricey but cheaper than 20 years of aluminum foil.

I do well with regular socks and winter hiking boots with a Gore Tex membrane. Plenty of space around the toes is a must so I buy 1/2 size too big. Do you have studded tires? They make a huge difference if your tire can dig down to the pavement/trail
Go to the Goodwill or Craig's List, and get some decent used skis. Cross country skiing is fun, so they say. I don't know what I'm talking about since I've never skied. I'm from So. Cal., and am the rare never skiing middle class guy. My relatives in Michigan slap on the skis in the back yard, and ski for miles. They love it. They bike the rest of the year. It's good to see you out there in the weather.

I live in Japan and in winter use 'kairo' which I think are called pocket warmers elswhere. They make ones for your feet over here now. They are disposable so aren't particularly environmentally friendly but they do keep your toes a little warmer.
I could send you some if you can't find them in the States.
You can get them worldwide, they're called toe warmers, or that's the most common I think. You can even get full insoles that do the same thing.
The plastic foil thing is funny. Once your feet start sweating your screwed though. Use a flat pedal with a liner sock, wool sock, and insulated boot. Use gold bond in your liner sock (helps with sweat). Fun to watch though.
Agree with the comment about Wolvhammer boots by 45nrth. SPD compatible. Problem solved. They even have a warmer model.
Thin socks chemical hand warmers thick socks? I know someone who sears by neoprene socks and keen sandals in cold weather. The Sandals expand to accept thicker socks in a way that boots don’t. I bought a pair of snowshoeing gators for this year. They have a neoprene toe cap that goes over your boots.

The skiers are probably WTF because at about 3:25 it looks like you’re riding to the left of the corridor trail, in their tracks. Skinny tires especially screw up where the XC skiers go. Ride in the middle of the trail up there on the corridor. Do your best to avoid crossing their tracks. Grooming will hopefully start soon, snow willing. Enjoy your first winter here. 👍
Never skied before so have no idea of the protocol, was just avoiding the ruts on the right track. So the protocol for cyclists is to ride in the middle?
Path Less Pedaled yeppers. The edges belong to the skiers come snow fall. Folks in the Snake are pretty cool with cyclists being up there. Have had many conversations in the past with the groomer and they’re all about fatbikes using the groomed trail as well, just ask that consideration is given to ski tracks. Lower sections where you guys have been in the vids so far see a lot of hikers so they get rutted and bumpy. Fat tires are best practice. Mtb tires are not prohibited but, just like in mud use your best discretion to not damaged trail(ice ruts suck for everyone). As an FYI, all of Sam Braxton in Pattee is closed to cyclists in Winter. Pretty strong contingent of folks riding fatbikes down at Blue Mountain. MTB Missoula has a groomer that runs trail out near Gold Creek. Fat biking in the area has come a long way in the 5 or so years I’ve been riding them. Most folks are just happy to see anyone out sharing trails but, you’ll always get the folks who think their method is best. Cheers.

Best way to keep your feet warm is to get off the bike and run until they warm up. Those skiers shouldn't be surprised at mtn bikers in winter, heck those are the type of people on roller skis the week after all the snow is gone. I know, I used to be one of them. LOL Take care and have fun!

P.S. - Fat Bikes are definitely worth the investment (Salsa, Surly, and Rocky Mountain are all good bets).

Haven't made the investment in studded tires yet. Soon. Haven't seen any recumbent trikes.

Yes. Definitely flat pedals. Bar mitts are awesome. Have taken them down to 17degrees and they work great with a medium weight glove! Now if we can only figure out the feet.
I've heard of people using hand warmers, as someone else already mentioned. I haven't tried it myself. Might be worth a go just to see.
