Shahid Parvez Khan is totally dedicated to the sitar, upholding the illustrious traditions of his ancestors while expanding the instrument’s technical boundaries. Critics back in India have described him as ‘Indian music personified’. Born into the legendary Imdadkhani gharana of Uttar Pradesh, he was always expected to carry the family legacy forward. His ancestors gave shape to the modern sitar, redesigning it and formulating the now-distinctive gayaki ang [singing style]. The Khan family includes pioneers such as his uncle Vilayat and his grandfather Imdad, who in 1904 became the first recorded sitarist.
His early training was famously demanding. He had to practice for the majority of his waking life, rarely playing outside or socialising with his peers. His father Aziz did not believe in praise, and avoided smiling at his son’s accomplishments despite widespread acclaim as a prodigy. For many the extreme discipline may have poisoned the music, but not for Shahid, who says “my involvement in music is so much that I do not think of anything else...I do not believe I can live a better life.”
Khan’s playing reaches scarcely believable standards: He feels no need to dabble with fusion music, saying that Hindustani music “is like a great ocean - you can spend a lifetime exploring it and will not run out of space.” Technical innovations set his style, with unique picking patterns and overtone whispers that glide upwards and spiral into silence.
Today he sits at the pinnacle of Hindustani music, touring widely while also finding time to teach at his eponymous SPK Academy in Arizona (“I do not teach for money - it is my passion”). But it is only the music which motivates him: “I always want to proceed, and overcome whatever boundaries I come across. But the direction is never pre-planned. It is about the green light. I don’t have to wait for it to flash - I have reached a level where it is always on. There are no shortcuts to this place, but it must be the goal.”

Piloo is his forte. He takes the melancholic route and goes deep into it.
Thanks for bringing this quality content @Darbar. It was 2015 January, Ustadji was playing at our place in Bangalore. He started playing Piloo around 7:30 PM and everyone was lost in it. He played Piloo for almost an hour. It was a life-changing experience for many of us. I had never heard such a piece of blissful music until then. I could never hear Ust. Vilayat Khan live. But whenever Shahid Parvez was in town, I made sure to attend it no matter what and listen to him. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians of our time and his legacy will remain for ages to come. You almost gave us live experience with this beautiful high-class content.

At the beginning Ustad Ji convinces the listener that they MUST give their attention and makes the mind calm, halfway through Ustad Ji gets the listeners emotions to his hands completely under his control, by the end the listener's crying and has no idea how it happened.

The Imdadkhani Etawah gharana has given some of the best sitarists of today and the past. No doubt that Ustad Ji counts as one of them. I am trying to reach Ustad Irfaan Khan to learn sitar from him and hope fully will be able to keep up the legacy of this gharana.
Having the feeling that the raga is everywhere in the atmosphere with its full beauty and form .
Every note he plays ❤..I must have listened to ustad Ji’s version of pilu so many times and I still come back to it

the recording of this was superb I can actually hear it as if I were there, I find many of Ustad's videos hard to get into because I can't hear the sitar the way it needs to be heard.

This is very unfair- unless Darbar intends to sell the complete recording commercially. Is that so? The quality of recording is outstanding. It would be an immense pleasure to listen to the complete concert- with this kind of recording.

I think ustadji secret is in his ability to put dynamic on every notes that he draws.. and the way he put the spaces in between them plus his flavor on choosing the right notes to represent his feelings..
Thanks to the sound crew.. they make sure those mics can pick all the frequencies and dynamics from very soft to loud and they were sucessfully shaping the awesome tone color of sitar. Its impossible to hear those soft notes in a regular gigs , they made ustadji get even more as glowy and shiny as gold.. imho
