Learn more about the music:
Musically, Shahid Parvez Khan does not compromise. He is totally dedicated to the sitar, upholding the illustrious traditions of his ancestors while expanding the instrument’s technical boundaries. Critics back in India have described him as ‘Indian music personified’. Born into the legendary Imdadkhani gharana of Uttar Pradesh, he was always expected to carry the family legacy forward. His ancestors gave shape to the modern sitar, redesigning it and formulating the now-distinctive gayaki ang [singing style]. The Khan family includes pioneers such as his uncle Vilayat and his grandfather Imdad, who in 1904 became the first recorded sitarist.
His early training was famously demanding. He had to practice for the majority of his waking life, rarely playing outside or socialising with his peers. His father Aziz did not believe in praise, and avoided smiling at his son’s accomplishments despite widespread acclaim as a prodigy. For many the extreme discipline may have poisoned the music, but not for Shahid, who says “my involvement in music is so much that I do not think of anything else...I do not believe I can live a better life.”
Khan’s playing reaches scarcely believable standards: “I believe that what you play spontaneously should be perfect. Whatever comes into your mind, you should be able to play it on the sitar. It is now a complete instrument - by which I mean you can replicate any aspect of vocal music on it.” He feels no need to dabble with fusion music, saying that Hindustani music “is like a great ocean - you can spend a lifetime exploring it and will not run out of space.” Technical innovations set his style, with unique picking patterns and overtone whispers that glide upwards and spiral into silence.
Today he sits at the pinnacle of Hindustani music, touring widely while also finding time to teach at his eponymous SPK Academy in Arizona (“I do not teach for money - it is my passion”). But it is only the music which motivates him: “I always want to proceed, and overcome whatever boundaries I come across. But the direction is never pre-planned. It is about the green light. I don’t have to wait for it to flash - I have reached a level where it is always on. There are no shortcuts to this place, but it must be the goal.”
Here he plays a jhalla [strong rhythmic exploration] in Yaman, one of North India’s most famous ragas. Often the first taught to students, it brings a distinctly balanced set of tensions, capable of producing a vast range of moods. It uses Kalyan thaat [SRGMPDNS], differing from the Western major scale in only one respect - it takes a tivra Ma [sharp 4th], disbalancing the centre of the scale and brightening the sound.
Sitarist Shujaat Khan says that Yaman “represents the very flux of life”. Music therapist Thomas Meisenheimer describes the raga as “sensitive and delicate. The augmented fourth [Ma] creates awareness of unresolved anger, disappointments and injuries. The major seventh [Ni] and major third [Ga] are very strong as well and light the fires of longing. Yaman is like an unsolvable koan, an open question…”. Listen to more of Yaman here:

I am mesmerized
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for making this and for sharing it. I saw Ustad Shahid Parvez in a concert hall at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, around 1988. I am 61 years old, a drummer, and have attended more concerts in my life than I can remember. But never in my life have I had the kind of experience Shahid Parvez's music gave me that evening. At a certain point I began to see the sounds rising above the stage and making elaborate shapes in the air, like twirls of incense smoke, dancing and fading into invisibility . I was not on drugs! His music literally caused multi-sensory hallucinations, of the best kind imaginable. I will never forget that experience, and I still find it hard to believe that it actually happened. His technique is astonishing.
Thank you for sharing that experience. Made my hairs raise, too. Namaskaram sir.
Wonderful to hear your experience Louie. I believe I heard him at the USF campus in Tampa, FL in 2003. It was sad that there was barely any audience to experience that marvelous performance. In the midst of the concert a couple started passionately kissing - the melody coupled with the note and the way it sounded on sitar guess the trio lead to that situation. They were right in front of Ustadji and I am from India and we do have live concerts here but none dare get into that mood and also its our tradition/culture associated with classical music. To add to this, Goddess Saraswathi is supposed to be the patron of Sangeet that too dissuades the desire on most of the ragas. Anyway, many of us could sense the awkwardness of the situation. I am not able to recall now - may be Ustadji stopped for a brief moment to break the spell and allow the emotions to wear off.
I used to be able to play a basic version of the Jhalla when I was younger. I haven't held a sitar in my hands for about 15 years. This brought back memories of a time when life wasn't measured out in rupees and taxes. 😊

THIS IS THE BEST MUSIC I HAVE HERD IN MY LIFE
Close your eyes..then experience the Divine. Amazing
What I really love about Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan's touch is that he creates a polyphony.
It sounds like two people are playing together.
He's my best source of inspiration when I play my sitar.
I mean this Jhalla holds the Universe within.
Wow! What a perspective! 😇
Many thanks for posting this.
It has been a few years since I last saw Ustadji perform, but he is always good (he once listened to me practicing from the room he and my teacher were sitting in, and sent my teacher in to tell me to play the Sargam a thousand times; very instructive - I always speed up when trying to do that).
I'm 19...I do liking these all musics.
Choton Banerjee you are lucky , you choice is ahead of 99% people
I can meditate my entire life on this music.
I don't know what to say...tears just don't stop... Thank you Darbar...#legendarysitarplayer...

A truly incredible performance, I've never heard a sitar piece that was so otherworldly, quite frankly I've never heard a sitar make that kind of music. So many rapid hand movements and yet the music is so soft and calm. It's my new favorite sitar performance and it's going to be hard to dethrone !
This is Hypnosis. God bless these hands! Thank you.
Excellent presentation .
Many many thanks to all the individuals who are involved in this job .
Very matured playing with amazing mildness.

Gandharva in human form.
Student of Vilayat Khan. Heard him years ago on AIR Calcutta. Same style Jhalla with oneTaraf tuned on Ni. I find the Khan family style and also their followers 'bitsy' and fragmented. There is a tendency to go in for technique mongering and wizardry and not use them as tools to attain an overall picture of the Raga and its Bhav. Just my taste I suppose but displays of techniques are not music.
This is beyond technique, it spurred a spiritual experience in me once.
This dude can surely play lol
