Would you be able to do a sort of review of how good the pedal models are going into the front of an amp while bypassing the amp/cab simulation? I love my amp and cab right now, and I want to get rid of my pedal board and just use a pod go, so I’d love to get a feel for how good the pedal models are. Not very many reviews talk about the pedal modeling. It’s almost always the amp modeling and the pedal models are almost ignored.

your a hero man, no other video talks about shutting off the preamp and was wondering why my line 6 pod go into my new marshall stack sounded like shit. again thanks man.
I searched everywhere for this & now I finally have the answer to the, "fx loop return hook up". Thx for throwing in the sound demo, a huge added bonus. Thx again for this video!!
This was very helpful man thank you so much for the post! I've found that using the Line Out straight into my FX Return on my Peavey 120 watt heads sounds THE best!! That little pre-amp switching thing you showed me flipped a few lightbulbs in my head and now I'm FINALLY getting the tones I want from a larger speaker cabinets! I've had this Pod for almost 2 years and have only used it for smaller practice amps up until recently. I think what a lot of people miss about this device is that you really have to dive in and learn how it functions in order to get the full potential of what it can do. I almost bought the Helix but it would have likely given me option paralyses with all those different pedals and options. The Pod Go (imo) has everything you could possible ever need especially with all those amp selections and continued updates from Line6! Thanks again for the video, take care!
I run mine into the front end of my Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb. I keep the Tonemaster fairly clean and find that turning off the cabinet simulator and setting the amp to pre-amp only mode, bypassing the modeled power amp, gets me a great tone and I still get the character of whatever amp model I am choosing.
Also, just a little critique of the Line 6, when I switch to Pre-Amp only mode, it would be nice if it stayed on the same amp model without me having to dial down and find the thing again!
@@asant90 You could save it with that setting, but I don't always want to use it in preamp only. It would be nice if you could drop the power amp without it zeroing out the preamp.
Awesome explanation! I got out of the multi-effects scene about a decade ago but I’ve been considering going that way again with all the advances in the field. This really answered some of the questions I had regarding the best way to use them with a real amp. Thanks for this!
Great video! I just found out about running main out into FX loop return recently and had been using an FRFR for years. I have to say both the Helix and Pod Go sound better run this way into my tube amp rather than the FRFR. I didn't know about running in Preamp mode until watching this so thank you for the knowledge.
@@TaylorDanley I've been using the Headrush 1x12 FRFR which doesn't sound bad, I was just surprised at how much better the FX return into the tube amp sounds compared to the Headrush.

It might be a little nerdy but I still want to see a video of someone going through the different types of switching and the limitations on each, (TRS,MIDI,exc...) and mostly what options, if any there are for older peavey's that use that stupid 7 pin din cable. I wish they made a cheaper alternative to the amp gizmo for this, any suggestions on other products that convert analog switching to digital?

I did pick up a midi mate to be able to switch channels when I'm just jamming and dont have a midi track programmed to switch, but even then I couldn't figure out how to program it properly 😂 that stuff is a little over my head. No idea about the 7 pin cable either, but that's something I'll have to look into. I have a peavey missing the foot controller, so it would be good to know!
Excellent video, but I am not sure how to make the connection to use the pod go preamps. How should I make the connection of the cables in that case? guitar to the In of the Pod Go, and then how do I connect the amp's effects loop?
I recently returned the pod go because I was a noob and only used headphones. Trying to find a quieter solution for at home play other than my 100w valve king, this 4 cable method would make me go out and grab another one of these.
Hi Taylor, thanks for the informative video, i just wonder why if i put delay and reverb after fx loops and turn on the dirty (Lead) mode on tube amp the delay and reverb doesn't give any sound, but if i put delay and reverb before fx loops its sound terrible. This only happen when i run dirty (Lead) mode on my amp. Its work fine when in clean mode by the way. I look forward to a feedback. Thank You in advance.
Great video. Just got a Pod Go, if I want to run a noise gate pedal (to save a block) and I’m using the 4 cable method, where does the pedal go? Thanks!
Just use the built in noise gate on the input block, boom.. problem solved! But if you wanted to use a physical pedal, I'd put it directly after your guitar... that's just me though, you can experiment with what works best for your setup.
I like to use my GE-200 in my effects loop for the post effects. Unfortunately it doesn't have the loop feature on the unit, so I can't use the pre and post effects along with my amp. I have the overdrives in analog form in front. Another cool thing I found is that, by adjusting the overall level of the GE-200, I can almost use it like a power attenuator. I can crank my power amp for max saturation but turn down the level on the effects unit for the actual output volume. Hopefully I'm not doing something wrong and burning the power amp, but I'll find out soon enough I'm sure.
Hey Taylor thank you for your video. I have a question, hoe do you recommend to use it if you use amp and it's directly connected to an PA for monitoring purposes?
What if I wanted to put in my favorite overdrive pedal ? So use multi fx with tube amp but have a pedal attached also. So use multi fx pedal like modulation in fx loop and use multi fx pedals but also 1 or a few actual pedals. Klon,808,TS9.
One additional question: is there any situation where the Amp Out of the POD Go is useful? I had seen a lot of videos but almost nobody cares about the Amp Out jack. Thanks again.
Can you basically have an entire external analog pedalboard going through the pod go? Obviously I would just use a 1-3 pedals for this but I would like to free up some blocks if thats possible.
I actually did this in a video for that exact reason... it's called flamma pedals in the pod go effect loop, or something similar. Yes. You definitely can.
Hey Taylor , I’ve got a line 6 floor pod plus, I wanna run it into my fender champ 100…. So on the floor pod there’s a left/mono and a right , then on my amp I have a pre out and power in… what would be the way to hook this thing up because I can’t get it to work …
great video!!! thanks man! dumb question, what's the best way to use it with a focusrite scarlett? I know the POD GO can be used as an interface, but it's a pain in the butt to keep switching them back and forth.
I just plug it in directly to the input of the scarlett, same way I use them in my videos and shootouts normally. For the same reason too, managing drivers is annoying!
I am currently connecting the Pod Amp Out to the amp Return and using the power amp section of a solid state bass amp while using a regular Gibson SG Standard guitar. The first time I tried this, I did what was recommended and disabled the Cab/IR in the Pod but still used the modelling amps. It sounded terrible! I was able to improve the sound by reenabling the Pod Cab/IR. Seems totally wrong but it's working for now. After seeing your video, I'm wondering if I can just use the Pod Pre-amp model then disable the Pod Cab/IR like it's recommended? Haven't tried this yet but I will. Any suggestions would be grateful.
My aria pro Ape -6 has a send and return sockets and my sessionette guitar amp has send and return sockets what leads go to where and do I just plug my guitar into the main amp guitar in put socket.
If you do 4cm and you turn off the effects loop then doesn’t that give you best of both worlds? You can use amp emulation on the pod (turn off cab) and bypass the physical preamp?
I have a 5150 2 and when I do the four cable method I can never get delay to work. I put it right after reverb and if I turn the delay icon off I get no sound.

Hi Taylor i really need your suggestion for my setting. I have boss katana mk 2 100 watt which has fx loop. This is a combo amp. I'm still newbie and really confuse. I need your best recommendation for my pod go plug in into my boss katana? Thank you in advance Taylor.
Great video. Listen to him guys because he is doing this the right way! Leave him like and subscribe. 24 years ago I worked and played with my band in a professional recording studio.. Not a single one of these noobs working there not even the studio owner told me to hook up my pedals to the FX return. They didnt even tell me there is such thing as FX loop on the back. I had the shittiest sound in the mix and on the stage, and I was blaming my self and my pedals for it. After getting my first multiFX i relised that it have outputs for FX loop on the back of the amp. Too late, by that time i was long enemy with the studio owner and all these noobs working there. Even our soundengeneer who was at the time well known singer in a big metal band didnt know how to hook up pedals to the amp. I had Distortion, MetalZone, Chorus and Delay in the chain, all in the front of the amp, and nobody told me how to hook em up propertly. Now I have my own studio and I bet that so many years later they still didnt learn how to use guitar pedals. Keep teaching these people, they are getting far better lessons from you then I did from entire recording studio crew 24 years ago.
I used to use a distortion in front of a half stack and had no idea why it sounded so bad, and how everyone had such good sounding distortion. I wasnt aware that people used amp distortion channels, boosts or any of that. I just thought if you wanted high gain, you used a grunge pedal 😂 I feel your pain.
So with the pod go, say I have an amp with an FX loop, using the 4 cable method, can I bypass my amps preamp and just use the modeler, or can I only bypass that by going straight to the fx return?
Awesome video, very informative, thanks! I see on the boss gt1000 you can change your amps channels with the 4 cable method. Do you know if the pod go can do this?
Thanks! 🤔 I know it can be done if your amp has midi or specific channel switching type, but I dont think I own a compatible amp, so I haven't tried it
Greetings Taylor, need a little advice. After much research into multi fx pedals I am down to either the new Boss GX-100 or the Line 6 Pod Go. Can’t demo them where I live and I have to take an almost blind decision. My primary criterion is the quality of the sounds, and I will be recording a lot. Other than that, I worry a little about the Pod Go having only four useable blocks (or so they say). I am new to the multi fx universe and any advice would be welcome. Thanks!
I wish I could tell you but I actually haven't used a GX100 yet. I can tell you the pod go is great though. It is pretty limited, but only if you want to build really effects intense signal chains.
I shot the whole pick up swap, bridge upgrade, set up... everything! That's probably why I haven't edited it yet, it's like 4 hours of footage 😂 I'll get to it.
does anyone know if you can use the pod go to midi switch amp channels? my pod hd pro x has certain amp channels on the 5150iii assigned to each preset; i'm interested in upgrading but I need something that can perform channel switches for live playing.
Thanks brother!! I love your vid but the way you did it confused me. There wasn’t a comprehensive and simple “if you want x do y.. etc” that wasn’t broken up with introducing another config
I thought you ment hooking a multi fx unit into the pod go fx loop!?!? And why would you wanna do that? Well I got a Helix rack in my studio and the Pod go wireless for live use, Which got me thinking 🤔 just for shits & grins let's run the Helix into the pod go fx loop see what kind of dual stereo multi cab parallel processing mayhem we can come up with.
So I’ve got a question, what output on the POD Go do you use to run to the Amp FX Return, just tried it, almost went deaf😂 I had the main out going to the return on my amp. Did I connect it wrong?
Maybe somebody here can answer this... Using the 4 cable method - If you wanna take care of your amp tubes, What would you turn off first, the multi-effects, or the amp?
Taylor, I like your vids, but having the distortion channel of a real 5150 and plugging a POD Go into it, is ridiculous! Needed to say that (I also owned a real 5150).
I appreciate the video but your sound tests make me smile. No one uses death metal speed riffs to hear tone difference. It’s so odd I get a kick out of watching you do it.
Are there any other idiots out there who tried the 4 cable method and forgot to turn on the effect loop foot switch and was wondering why isn't it working? Just me ?
Yeah,but...Basically you want distortion/gain in front of the tube pre, BUT want Echo, delay modulation in the effects loop, after the gain , that is what this 4 cable business is all about . Maybe run a Wah pedal in front of all of it. THEN all the Rocket Science this guy is talking, as if anyone knows! lol
Too much shit involved with these digital effects processors, and these amp plugins. It makes sense to do this if you have a shitty sounding modeling amp.

If I run this into my laney Irt 120 fx send
eturn is the a way of running my clean\distortions then use pod go or is the pod go on permanently? I like the cleans and distortions on my amp but would like to utilise the pod in to the mix
As soon as I go through front of amp and plug it in, it hums like crazy . Even with different cables
Make sure both are plugged into the same outlet, sounds like you have some ground loop hum
Im struggling to figure out how to run my pod go through my peavy vyper modeling amp. The vyper contains various peavy amps that all sound very diffrent. Of course am using the clean channels. Any advice or anybody run into this?
Great explanation!
Damn. That was me all of high school. With a Grunge pedal too!!!😅
So with the pod go, say I have an amp with an FX loop, using the 4 cable method, can I bypass my amps preamp and just use the modeler, or can I only bypass that by going straight to the fx return?
@@TaylorDanley Sure, thanks.
Did you by chance film any of the pickup swaps you made on your guitars recently? It would be cool to get a pickup swap for idiots tutorial :D
I shot the whole pick up swap, bridge upgrade, set up... everything! That's probably why I haven't edited it yet, it's like 4 hours of footage 😂 I'll get to it.
Taylor Danley holy moly! I definitely won’t be trying that anytime soon! The luthier i go to charges only 100 CAD for a swap!
I did this but my FX dont work now because the way you show it you use the FX loop for input
does anyone know if you can use the pod go to midi switch amp channels? my pod hd pro x has certain amp channels on the 5150iii assigned to each preset; i'm interested in upgrading but I need something that can perform channel switches for live playing.
This is gold :D
i was looking for a floyd ride guitar any recommendations under 500
*rose
Thanks brother!!
I love your vid but the way you did it confused me. There wasn’t a comprehensive and simple “if you want x do y.. etc” that wasn’t broken up with introducing another config
Followed this tutorial... mine still sounds like shit... it gets worse when I enable the FX loop. This is frustrating.
Lifesaver
Thanks!!! Genial video muchísimas gracias
My options are limited with my Roland Cube LOL
I thought you ment hooking a multi fx unit into the pod go fx loop!?!? And why would you wanna do that? Well I got a Helix rack in my studio and the Pod go wireless for live use, Which got me thinking 🤔 just for shits & grins let's run the Helix into the pod go fx loop see what kind of dual stereo multi cab parallel processing mayhem we can come up with.
But I want to hear stereo effects like delays and so.
So I’ve got a question, what output on the POD Go do you use to run to the Amp FX Return, just tried it, almost went deaf😂 I had the main out going to the return on my amp. Did I connect it wrong?
It was too loud? Turn down the master volume on the POD GO 🙉
Maybe somebody here can answer this...
😂 I know. I dont own a combo amp though, so how else would I demonstrate it 🤷♂️
🙌
I appreciate the video but your sound tests make me smile. No one uses death metal speed riffs to hear tone difference. It’s so odd I get a kick out of watching you do it.
You must REALLY trust your bottom strap pin lol
Kermit the frog right at 1:51
Are there any other idiots out there who tried the 4 cable method and forgot to turn on the effect loop foot switch and was wondering why isn't it working? Just me ?
Yeah,but...Basically you want distortion/gain in front of the tube pre, BUT want Echo, delay modulation in the effects loop, after the gain , that is what this 4 cable business is all about .
Maybe run a Wah pedal in front of all of it.
THEN all the Rocket Science this guy is talking, as if anyone knows! lol
That doesn't look like the back of my Pod Go
SO
HOT
RIGHT
NOW!!!!!!!
Too much shit involved with these digital effects processors, and these amp plugins. It makes sense to do this if you have a shitty sounding modeling amp.
So, where in the video did you ever "HOOK UP" a multi effects unit (or pedal I assume) to the Pod Go? I smell clickbait!
Jesus... how many ad breaks can you fit in.??.turned you off at the start of the 3rd break...
