Hi Brian, I have a challenge for you? Perhaps you can't or don't think it's worthwhile. No Problem, I'm not going anywhere. Here is my idea. I would like to see you paint an entire car with a small air compressor say a 21 gallon with the R500. No $1000 air dryer or 200 gal air compressor. A basic DIYer paint job using a mid level cost paint. I think a lot of subscribers would enjoy that. What do you think? Thanks!

That would be breath of fresh air.. I get that guns make a difference but ignoring the fact that he’s spraying with an endless air supply is just disingenuous. He could probably spray a cargo van with a cheap gun from Home Depot with the air from the shop behind it.

You could spray all day long with this gun, as long as your 20gal compressor can produce 4CFM of air. I have a $50 DIY filter/dryer on mine. Produces a gorgeous finish.

Nice Job, I’ve been spraying since 1982.
Retired two years ago as a Tech Rep from one of the big three.
I agree with everything you said and done.
Faster, greater overlap in cooler conditions produces a flawless finish.
I’ve always said it’s in the wrist, I’ve sprayed and received great results with cheap guns plenty of times.
Don’t get me wrong, the more expensive guns are a pleasure to use for a number of reasons, such as balance, comfort, easy to keep clean etc.
Ohh, use the slower Reducer/Activator you can to allow the finish to breath for the best performance, weather it’s the primer, base, or clear.
    Good luck guys!

Nice video. I get that showing the spray gun in action is important, but it would've been extra nice to get some information on it. The title says paint with "a small compressor" but the requirements are never mentioned, no recommendations were given for compressor specs, it wasn't shown working with a small compressor, and the air consumption of the gun wasn't even stated. A "small" compressor is vague, especially when it's compared the the massive compressors like in the professional spray shops where the video was filmed. One persons' small is a 3 gallon, another persons' small is a 30 gallon.

prep and masking is the part I like the least. I've been using HVLP paint guns with a 10 gallon compressor... seems to work but now you've got me wanting to try a LVLP to see if I can get even better results

  • @robh3267
    @robh3267 11 місяців тому +9

I've found that often times cheaper spray guns can force you to be a better more versatile painter because they force you to adjust your technique to get the most out of the gun, the big advantage to an LVLP gun is it works well with a smaller compressor and has very little over spray which helps to get a cleaner paint job, with smaller compressors you will need to spray a little slower than you were in this video but you can get some great results with this gun, Brian, you made a very important comment about paint quality, a good quality paint system will always give you far better results and will last much longer than cheap paint and using a manufacturer's complete system has always yielded me better results.

I love the A610 - has the non-stick coating that cleans up nice. Could paint an entire car non-stop with this gun with a 20 gallon compressor with at least 4CFM in the garage. It makes someone with almost no experience (me) look like I know what I'm doing, using Tamco products. Clears like glass.

Thats the new design R500, Its nice but returned it because the trigger wasn't smooth like the older R500. When I took it apart, the trigger has a plastic bushing making it kinda gritty. The older design uses a oring which was smoother. They share the same needle sets though.

I have 2 Aeropro LVLP R100 1.2 tip spray guns. The smaller brother of R500.
Use this with 50 liter, 13 gallon compressor. I've never had such a smooth result, just great. I use this for spot repairs, bumper, 1 panel or 4 rims. Ideal for amateurs without a spray booth or small work. Fan 12-15 cm, very little spray mist. I paid 21 euros/23 dollars. per part.

They give nice finishes but make you work a little harder than other budget guns. They use more like 7-8cfm not under 5. I like em because they're bullet proof. They resemble Iwata W-400's. No seals to wear out on the nozzle. Basic o ring internals. Ive used a Bellaria cap on mine. Works just like the original if you wanna put a $110 cap on a $60 gun😂 Good gun for a beginner. Ive since moved on to Iwatas and they make my work easier and Im able to get better results with less work. Cheers👍

Your comment about the paint gun seals @10:20 really hit the nail on the head namely "...the longevity might not be the best...don't leave it in thinners!" is a polite way of saying it's got second rate parts/seals to it (which surely surprises almost no one these days).
I bought some large spray bottles specifically because the product description claimed to be "solvent resistant" and left one half filled with auto wheel cleaner (the kind that smells like weak pool acid). A week later and the thing doesn't spray now. Lesson learned, now when I'm done cleaning wheels, I dump the wheel cleaner back in the container and spray water through it...spray bottles are cheap, but not that cheap -

I wish I had purchased that combo...didn't see it before mine was delivered. One thing, if you are using pps cups, order the pps adapter with the female threads to go on the gun as opposed to pulling the cup adapter out of the gun. I did that and it is a goofy fine thread with a bunch of thread sealant that made a total mess inside the gun...plus I couldn't find an adapter with 1mm male threads. Good luck!@@greggherod2153

Highly recommend better clear. I started out using cheap upol clear. Runs easy and needs more skill to lay down. I stll use it for my own cars because its cheap. When I spray for others and they supply quality clear, it lays down easier and flows out flat. I can lay it down thicker and Ive had good luck not getting runs. A tip for flat clear, use a little reducer(5-10%). It sprays on smoother with less peel. Just not too much or else it will not go on thick enough and if you use too much it will reduce the shine. Use the right temp activator and reducer. Those r500's like more pressure for clear. For full fluid, 33-35 psi

Love the knowledge you share but I would love to see a video on prep of the area you are spraying in if you are spraying at home in a home garage to keep bugs and dust to a minimum! I am going to be spraying some parts at home in my basement and I’ve put it off out of not knowing the best, easiest, and smartest way to keep dust nibs down! Wet the floor? Create a small plastic panel diy booth? How to keep overspray down since I’d be spraying in a basement or garage? I do work at a dealership, unfortunately we don’t have a body shop, but I can use the large garage if I need to when we are closes on Sundays….but again I’d be worried about overspray, our techs have VERY expensive boxes and tools that I don’t want overspray settling on! So I’d love to see a video on prepping your diy area if spraying at home!

I am not a fan of polishing either, but as I do not have a good booth to work in, it is something I must do. Problem is, you then need to do the whole car because the original paint does not gloss to match what I have painted. I have one of these guns but only use it for base. I like my FLG5 for clearing.

Eastwood LT100, Summit Racing LVLP, Sprayit 33000, these are all the same R500. There is a newer design R500 but it uses a plastic bushing for the trigger, the older uses oring which is smoother. They all share the same needle sets. Works well with a 20 gallon, but i modified mine with a power steering cooler after cooler and a high flow regulator.

"I don't got that much talent." 7:25 Haha... that's funny. Everyone who watches you would disagree unless they are big ego professional painters. As you stated early on it doesn't make sense to spray with a cheaper gun, but don't go too cheap. I have taken 2 refinishing classes at a local community college. I bought a $200 DeVilbiss FLG4, which is okay but I still struggle with it. Stripey / mottled base and inconsistent clear with some dry areas and runs or sags on every panel. Your experience, talent, and eye see and correct things in process that less experienced or talented people do not see until after the coat is done. If I had your talent, I could make the FLG4 spray great results. I invested in expensive guns for clear only and base only and my results improved significantly. They did not make me a better painter, they just helped bridge the gap of my skill by putting down better spray patterns. I am still far from perfect and need much more practice, but having better atomization and a better fan helped my lower skill level. Striped or mottled base is no longer an issue and I hardly run clear, but it still happens here and there in smaller areas. I made the investment, because I have several projects in the garage so I could justify the expense and paint is expensive so having to redo a job due to my low skill and a cheap gun adds up fast so it was worth it to me.

Hey Brian, first of all thanks for all your videos. I’m working on my project classic subaru and your videos have helped me a lot! Yesterday I painted my gas door as a test and I had a mirror finish without having to wet sand, I will obviously buff it lightly once the entire car will be done.
I wanted to ask if you could do a review and test of the Chinese copy Devilbless GTI pro with the T110 cap, mine is gold in color.
I personally use it as my only gun for sealer, base and clear as I purchased it with a 1.3mm and 1.8mm tip. It’s around 70$ (90$ with both tips) and for me as a hobbyist was at the right prive point. It would be nice to have a pro test it out and give us some tips on it as you will probably know better how tune it in.
I have been using it for a year for epoxy base layers and callipers and there are no major issues with it, a part from a small paint leak with the 1.3mm nozzle from the pin seal close to the handle if left with paint or thinner for for 5 to 10 minutes.

Hey Brian thanks for the vid.......I also have a smallish 90 litre (think that's about 20gal) compressor and did have an HVLP but struggled to do the roof and hood without getting tiger stripes, after showing the video of it to people on your fb page the general consensus was that the fan was too small and someone recommended getting a devilbis flg5 since although not hvlp the cfm required (10.5) isnt too high compared to most lvlp guns so should work find with my compressor, and yeah it is so much better!
However, I did get water finding it's way through despite a water trap/regulator at the compressor end. I was then told to use another inline water trap at the gun end, but have found that having both a water trap at the compressor and another by the gun drops the pressure so much that I have to turn up the regulator at the compressor to 90-100psi, to have a chance of still receiving 25psi at the gun.
I noticed in this setup you don't have a water trap at the gun though, so how do you prevent water getting through from any condensation in the hose etc?

I bought that gun and the pps 2.0 to clear my headlights, ended using the Eastwood 2k clear rattle cans(not very pleased with the outcome). Dried slightly cloudy. I’m going to sand it off and try the gun soon.

The tool doesn't care, it cannot. The hand using the tool is what matters most, the type of tool is secondary. I've been using the same paint guns for like 20 years with consistent results no matter the brand of paint. i've used to lowest quality to the 1000$ plus guns and the one thing i learned is this: spray with the highest pressure the paint gun will allow, and open the fan all the way and adjust it down slightly. higher air pressure will elimate orange peel AND runs.

hey bro, do you have or can you do a video with a tutorial on how to prepare, apply and paint rock guard on a car panel?
I have a 99 Miata that I am painting the entire car this spring and the front quarter panels, and the doors have a rock guard coating under the paint about 1/3rd the way up on the panels.
Do i need to take that down to the bare metal to reapply it?
I haven't found any information yet on YT on how to do it. I already bought the product and the special gun to apply it just need the knowledge. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.
And thanks for all of your videos, it has helped me so much in prepping for this project.

I'd like your opinion. Which cheep budget gun would you recommend that has a wide spray and has a good balance. And also most guys I know spray P P G. Some of the UA-camrs I follow spray Sikens. What are some of the other brands you would recommend for a beginner to start with. Your response would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian, I love this videos. I followed your instructions and paint came up great, but I went ahead to cut and buff 2 weeks after following your instructions from other video and the paint lost it’s shine, it feels very soft and flat to the touch, but is not shining as before. Do you think maybe I should have used the 1000grid a bit harder?

Hi I really have learned so much from you since I started watching your videos. I’m in the market of getting a LVLP gun since my 60gallon Ford and I only have a 30 gallon and I definitely want to get this gun. I also would like to know which adapter your using and paint cup setup since I don’t like using the big plastic cup since it takes a bit to clean. Thanks

Why majority of finishers don't know what is the bottom chocker valve for?
It is simply there to control texture of the finish (restrict air volume and the paint will start spitting giving peel effect). Not to control air pressure.
Another thing is those cheap regulators (air chockers). Unless they are diaphragm regulators they are nothing more then air volume restrictors. Just like that bottom valve on the gun. If using HVLP gun with those cheap regulator one will get poor finish. Remeber high volum needed.
With diaphragm regulator you controll the pressure but the volume is not effected.

I'd like to see how good of a job you could do with that gun and single stage urethane paint? I've got a Jeep Comanche that I'm restoring that I plan to paint myself (I had my autobody tech course in the past) and it won't be a showroom queen; I plan on driving and offroading it. So, I want to spend as little as possible, as I'll probably have to respray panels down the line after some trail runs!
