Hard water is FOR REAL an under-rated cause on this list. I moved from St. Louis, MO, with river water to Minnesota that uses mostly well water, and I immediately started having breakage and dry skin. My scalp was so itchy and flaky that I was crying and dousing myself in vitamin e oil. I had to start tripling the amount of shampoo and switch to a more nourishing shampoo and conditioner to solve that problem. But the amount that it will dry out your skin is HUGE. My husband is now looking into getting a water softener for the entire house because my he's watched how quickly my skin and hair dries out from the water.

This came just in time! I'm not sure what situation caused me to have dandruff but I'm making adjustments and being watchful. I'm not sure if it was the braids I had, a new gel I tried, or a new shampoo/conditioner I tried. All of these situations happened when I started to develop dandruff. Before my scalp was HEALTHY...I hadn't had dandruff since I was a child! But we'll see.

Sulfate shampoos they didn’t exist until I started my natural hair journey. I never had issues with growing my hair or my scalp. But lately i have been experiencing a very itch scalp! I discovered cowashing was not the best thing for my scalp it just made my scalp itchy. I
Over following the natural hair care routine. My routine was simple and I had no issues. Simplicity is best.

For me, I learned that tea tree oil (while it feels oh so good) is bad for my scalp. My scalp would become so inflamed and as a result would callous itself and I’d get these nasty patches. I didn’t realize it until I ran out of my favorite scalp oil by Design Essentials. After not using it, I found myself not reaching for a comb to scratch. Idk why it wasn’t common sense that my scalp was sensitive to tea tree because I can’t use it on the rest of my body. Also learned that lighter oils like almond and macadamia work great for me and go on the hair shaft and not on my scalp.

I had such an itchy scalp last week and I kept wondering why! It had only been five days since wash day...I know exactly why now. I started to prepoo a couple of hours before bed and put on a plastic cap with the intentions of washing 30 minutes later. Got tired and left it on overnight. Was busy that morning and didn’t wash my hair until the next afternoon. Wet hair and scalp is a definite no-no for me. My scalp has been crying!
