Love your genuine honesty! But you are NOT a bad diabetic - just a real diabetic. :) Appreciate your channel, your humor, your reviews and your dysfunctional pancreas like mine. :D
Thank you Levi! This video was so helpful! And your honest, authentic way of communicating about T1D and the T-Slim technology makes it so much easier to digest!
Super helpful thank you. My son just started Tslim yesterday. Last night was rough so this is a good reminder to dial back in the correct basal and correction factors.
One thing I wish control iq did is give me the option to chose the bs number when I’d like basal to stop. I love that it stops if I’m going to be below 70 but being around 70 already feels shitty/I feel shaky. Personally I’d like basal to stop around 90-100. Same thing for target bs, control iq defaults it to 110, I’d be more comfortable around 125-135. Hopefully that will be an option later on.
I get 3am bs spikes everyday from a rise in cortisol. My CDE and I used to swear by a basal profile increase at midnight so I would have enough insulin on board to catch it. Now, I start sleep mode at 3am to allow CIQ to catch the rise, then the basal rate carries me thru to 8am. Spending 5 hours in sleep mode works for me!
Thanks Levi! T1 37+ years now, been Omnipod for years(after using medtronic years), never thought I'd go back to tubing but I am. Tandem has always tried to up their game - where my current pump has not, they've been riding too long on the whole tubeless thing... I'm even more excited watching your video and admittedly, yes I do wing it sometimes, hate going high -I get near 200 and can't keep my eyes open! Low, I'm ok in low 20's which, we all know is not good... so looking forward to getting my new Tandem w/control IQ! I've learned a lot about it already but, even more from you! It's so amazing going from as a kid, no such thing as pumps and cgm's to now - THIS!! Thanks again!!
Levi, Good video. I will be getting CIQ next week. I’m so excited, been in a Medtronics for 16 yrs now, HATE Medtronics. Been a diabetic now for 35 yrs. I cannot express how excited I am to dial in the numbers and get between the lines more! I’ll keep you posted in June at my next endo visit: I’m currently a 8.0 A1C and have never been under a 7.0, 7.2 is the beat I’ve ever been. But hey, thanks again for the video!
Greetings Mr. Levi! Your UA-cam presentation was very professional and "matter of fact". You are transparent and honest with yourself which is most inspiring indeed. You have the most relatable presentation of which I just subscribed to and I anticipate many forthcoming presentations. Thank you for sharing your journey with us fellow Diabetics. Best Always.
Thanks Levi….my doc spoke with Me today Y about Basal IQ and set it up got my on my TSlim 22 which I have been on for A few years….and always afraid to make the change. But here we go”on the road again” and I hope it helps.
Thank you!! I have been putting off updating my sons pump because I felt confused. I really appreciate your straightforward way of getting the information out. Now I’m excited to get that update. 😀
Good video. I LOVE the name of your channel! 😁👍 I'm hoping to get on this system soon since the 670G I'm on now doesn't give the auto bolus if my BG's are climbing. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for sharing, glad I'm not the only one that have had trouble with maintaining tight control. I have also loss autonomic nervous symptoms .. from years of having t1d😏 46 yrs and counting....🌻
Good video, Levi. New subscriber! Thanks for putting it together, the graphics you used to explain the basal rate adjustments and when the pump will give a correction bolus are awesome! One point regarding "Sleep" mode is that there is no bolusing, only basal adjustments, so if you have an excursion that creates a huge spike (like a late pizza?), the basal rate adjustment might not be able to handle it. Your point about being dialed in on your profile though is spot on! After two weeks on Basal-IQ, I can see that my profile is going to need adjusting. I suspect that part of that is because I'm seeing more basal suspensions than I'm used to and that missing insulin is biting me as the food kicks in. The result is I am upping my basals and also doing more corrections sooner than when I was on my previous pumps.
Levi, I just started using the T-Slim X2 in May 2020 and am preparing to upgrade to CIQ very soon. Your overview was great to hear and it gives me a better understanding of what to expect with the new upgraded software.
It made a big difference! Still tweaking a bit. Pay attention to the trends in between meals. This helped me. Am I trending down slightly or up slightly? Usually it is one or the other and this helps for adjusting basal rates. Stay well!
thanks for this Levi, just got the notice the other day that I am getting Control IQ on my new X2 and needed some real world understanding of what this will mean. Thanks for the viewpoint and keep up the videos
Hi Levi. Fan of your videos as you tell it as it is! Plus adding humour into a sh*t disease. This video on CGM Dexicom is very timely for me as the G6 is about to be released in Australia and have been requested by my endo to use as I have the Tandem pump. More so as I have lost my sensitivity with lows and recently had a seizure (something I am not keen to repeat) and with the G6 loop system may offer some great safety benefits. Like you videos call out it is the random highs and lows for now real reason that drive me crazy! Keep the videos coming.
Wow I watch a lot of videos on this pump but how u explained it mind blowing thanks reallllyyy helpful!!!!!!!! I might get this pump I have the Medtronic 630g time for a new one
Good deal. Still waiting on Omnipod to do the same thing. I think the Omnipod Dash will loop but we still have the regular Omnipod for our daughter. With a small child tubeless is the way to go.
Hey man, I’m about to start on this cgm and pump in the next month. I’ve been T1D for 30years and there’s been good and bad years. Do you have any advice for when your ratio changes. I get these changes a few times a year. Just when your settled in a routine, bam 💥 it changes. I go from a 1:5 ratio to 2:1 in the evenings just like that. We can’t predict when this is going to happen so how would you deal with this. Great video by the way. Cheers
I don't like that I can only run 2 hour extended boluses. There are a couple of slow acting meals where we ran much longer (4-6) and control IQ doesn't keep up with late spikes.
Great video! I am considering switching to Tandem from Omnipod. I used to hate the tubes which is how I originally ended up with Omnipod. Now the lower insulin capacity is starting to be an annoyance. How is the Tandem system in general? I already have a Deacon G6.
I really like it. The ability of the Tandem pump to take data from the Dexcom and make adjustments is priceless. The pump is able to make revisions to your bolus based off of your current Dexcom readings, which I also love. They are two puzzle pieces that fit very well together.
If I interpret this correctly, it may be because you have the wrong settings in the pump that control iq may feel a little too careful to correct? I feel that the pump goes in too late and gives bolus when you are on the way up in blood sugar.
Hi Levi! We are considering beginning use of a pump for our 10YO son who plays baseball. Would you be able to provide feedback about using this particular pump / hooking / unhooking during games - he isn’t afraid to dive for balls and I’m a bit concerned how that will work ! He’s been wearing the G6 for 10 months with little baseball impact 🙂 And Go Braves !
Sure, Christy. I think this is a matter of opinion and what works best for the individual. I can tell you though, if I were to do it all over again, I would use insulin pens over the pump. In my life, the CGM has been worth its weight in gold. The pump is very neat and has a LOT of benefits, but on a scale of 1-10, I would rate the impact of the CGM a 10 and the pump a 5. I wouldn’t practice/play with the pump hooked up and that would mean hooking/unhooking the pump constantly. Then what if he needed insulin during a game/practice? Is he going to dig the pump out of whatever zip-loc bag its in, hook it up, bolus, wait for the bolus to finish, then unhook, re-bag it up, and hit the field? And hope he could get all this done before the inning is up or he is on deck? There are also so many moving parts to being a pump user. Infusion sites, tubes, the pump, keeping it charged, changing out cartridges, sites ripping out, and a lot more. It would be a major project making sure you had an answer for every possible complication while out at a ballfield in the middle of nowhere for an entire weekend. Some have success with using the pump AND carrying an insulin pen but that may be a bit much at 10 years old (not to mention the expense of funding both methods). From a diabetes standpoint, the pump is an extremely valuable tool that he will probably use for most of his life. I would be a bit concerned (if it were my own son) that I put him on the pump and it’s such a fight between the pump and sports that he comes to hate the pump and becomes even more frustrated with T1D. This is a tough one, and 100% about what works best for him. There are a ton of opinions on this and I am sure many have had success using the pump with contact sports. I am only responding from my own experience as a very rough and tumble child. If it could be broken, I somehow found a way to break it (Still this way come to think of it). I don’t feel that this was the answer you were looking for. My opinion on insulin pumps? They are a pain in the rear but have a ton of benefits. As an adult, I’m all in on pumps. As an athlete, I’m out. I hope this is helpful. I am sure more useful comments will come shortly!
@@BetweenTwoLines and @Christy Culberson - I tend to agree with Levi on the challenge of wearing a tubed pump while playing sports. Tslim and Medtronic tend to have pump clips that don't hold close to the body. If he really needs a pump for better control, he could try out some fabric (spandex) pump belts that hold the pump tight to his belly or better yet, his leg, during his games. Being under the clothes gives some protection from damage. But it will still be a hassle. Another option is the Omnipod pump for a tubeless attachment to his skin. I'm a dancer and runner, and wearing a heavy pump has meant that sometimes it goes flying. Belting it down has helped somewhat. :-)
Hi Levi, I enjoyed this video, I am starting the Control IQ training tomorrow and am so nervous but also excited. However, the biggest part of this video to me was how you said mowing the lawn is "exercise" for you! I have that same issue, and I've never known if it's common for T1Ds to be unable to do that and other yard/house work unless I start out at about 190. Do you drop fast from other seemingly "not exercise" activities?
Thank you Felicia, mowing my lawn for me is exercise simply due to heart rate! I work quickly. With a high heart rate, sweating, and out of breath, my body responds the same way as it would going for a jog. Every one is different though. You can’t improve what you don’t measure though. Noting which activities give you trouble is a great first step to making the necessary adjustments. Good luck! every person is a different case and we all
@@BetweenTwoLines I'm very excited to use the Exercise mode with Control IQ for all of the the things that aren't really exercise, but my body acts like they are. I hope you are improving every day too!
Thanks for the videos! I'm hoping to get a Dexcom G6, waiting to see if my insurance approves it. Watching your video I can't help but notice what's on your watch, is that trends from your Dexcom? If so, what watch is it? I've seen that it works with Apple and Android watches but all I've seen are where it shows your current blood sugar and an arrow, I don't currently wear a smart watch but may start if I get on the CGM so I'm beginning to search for what brand is best for it.
Bradley, you have several options when it comes to smart watches. As for using the Dexcom app, The watch face will show your current BS number and the graph showing your trend. Super helpful. Google Dexcom watch faces and you will see just what I mean. I have had the apple watch as well as a handful of android wear watches. The Dexcom watch face looks virtually the same. Definitely get a watch when you can - it is epic being able to know your blood sugars with a glance at your wrist!
Levi - It sounds like you've been a pump user for some time now. I jumped on the bandwagon about 18 months ago with the Medtronic 670G and while the pump has reduced my AIC down to 7.5, it is not without frustration. The Guardian CGM is one of the worst monitors I've used. This is why I am looking into the Tandem unit. How has your experience been with your pump?
I can confidently endorse the Tandem pump partnered with the Dexcom CGM. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing how well they work together. As with most things, far more reviews are provided by the frustrated customer than the happy one, so there are plenty of complaints to be read. My experience has been excellent. They seem to be leading the pack on the technology front and there appears to be even more developments coming soon. Also, the Tandem doesn't look like an insulin pump to the average person, which I particularly liked.
Am expecting the Slim very soon. Did not have a good experience with Medtronic Guardian CGM for the past year or so. Used Deacon G4 with my Animas Ping before that and it worked really well. Looking forward to less testing and more accurate CGM setup with Slim, which over the course of time will be my 5th pump. Your point about getting the Profiles accurate is well said. Nice info sharing!
I'm a diabetic since I was 8 year old I'm 37 now my blood sugar was 1,00054 type 1 diabetes trying this new pump had it four days now but my blood sugar is up and down still
Sandra Carral hi Sandra! It takes all three into account. The training dives deeper into this. It’s pretty neat how it adjusts differently based on a recent bolus and the amount of insulin onboard!
Thanks Levi, hangin on the edge from getting the TSlim and g6. Been w/Medtronic for 25yrs. Ready for a change. Heard bad things about Tandems infusion sets. We’re they just grumpy people or is there a problem. What kind doo you like.
I love it. No problems for me. Keep in mind with any bad review - it’s more often the people that are upset that take the time to review. The ones that are happy are to busy being happy with it. I think it’s a great product. May not be for everyone... but I certainly am a fan.
Ann, I was using various Medtronic pumps for 16+ years. I just recently (05/21/20) switched to the Tandem T-Slim X2 and the Dexcom G6. The Tandem infusion sets are very different from Medtronic; however, I've found the insertion to be MUCH less painful than using Medtronic. You know the Medtronic insertion is generally not painful. The biggest changes for me were un-looping the tubing and removing the spiral adhesive cover. I think once you try it, you will adjust quickly to it like when you first started using the Medtronic cartridge/tubing.
I have had a lot of issues with the canula of the auto soft sets getting kinked so I have switched to the true steal and have had zero issues. I had a Medtronic and an omnipod and this is the best that I have used for me. I have a lot of skin allergies and the metal sets have been so great for me and they are cheaper! Best of luck!
Don’t bother with this pump. I have widely swinging glucose levels with this pump. I often awaken in the morning with a glucose too high to read, yet no extra insulin was ever delivered. And no I don’t skip boluses.
Love your genuine honesty! But you are NOT a bad diabetic - just a real diabetic. :) Appreciate your channel, your humor, your reviews and your dysfunctional pancreas like mine. :D

Google Dexcom watch faces and you will see just what I mean. I have had the apple watch as well as a handful of android wear watches. The Dexcom watch face looks virtually the same. Definitely get a watch when you can - it is epic being able to know your blood sugars with a glance at your wrist!
@@BetweenTwoLines Cool thanks! It's good to see there are so many options with that, I guess I just hadn't looked enough yet!
Praying that you get it! I LOVE it! I use Fitbit Versa 2 with mine and the Glance software
I meant dexcom sw and Glance watchface
I hated the Guardian CGM so bad that I didn't use it! Love my Dexcom G6 so much I am switching from MT 630 G to the TandemT-Slim...so excited!
I'm a diabetic since I was 8 year old I'm 37 now my blood sugar was 1,00054 type 1 diabetes trying this new pump had it four days now but my blood sugar is up and down still
I am new to the pump But even though I Pre bolous it takes around four hours for the numbers to come down
Are your basal rates high enough? Just a thought.
How install wood stove pipe through wall inside home
This just made my day 😆😆
112.5? It can read blood sugar in half points??
Hi, Levi! Do you know how the algorithm makes predictions? Is it based only on CGM data or also on the carbs and insulin data?
Sandra Carral hi Sandra! It takes all three into account. The training dives deeper into this. It’s pretty neat how it adjusts differently based on a recent bolus and the amount of insulin onboard!
Love u livi new subby
Where are the training videos?
They are in the Tandem portal. It will guide you through the process when you begin the update to Control IQ
I run in sleep mode 24/7
mark4374 you are a beast! I may have to try that in a controlled environment.
Mark4374 how is that working out for you? I haven't gotten Ciq yet but am thinking that's how I will run mine.
Working great!
@@mark4374 what have your average BG been doing that?

Good work thank you ٩( ᐛ )و
God I want to curve the bill of that hat sooo bad.
😂😂😂
Don’t bother with this pump. I have widely swinging glucose levels with this pump. I often awaken in the morning with a glucose too high to read, yet no extra insulin was ever delivered. And no I don’t skip boluses.
Hey there new user of the control iq would love to chat
