I've been forced at pen-point by the rest of my TBR not to start new series until they are complete (Sanderson was the only concession I could negotiate) but Bound and the Broken is at the top of the list of series to start once they're complete. I love the "classic fantasy with a modern voice" sub genre, so I'm really excited about this one when I get there.
Thank you so much, Joshua! I do think The Bound and the Broken fits the classic fantasy with a modern voice criteria completely. And yes, this needs to be subgenre! 😂 I think the series will be finished next year. Not long now. 😁

Wow, classic epic fantasy is (still) alive! With dragons, magic, elves etc. Great to hear that. I missed this genre for the last few years. No disrespect to other fantasy subgenres. It's just good to know that there are still writers and readers for epic high fantasy series. Looking foreard to reading it.
Currently going through the first book. I’m definitely feeling the 3.5 you gave it so far, but I’m very excited to continue with the series after this one. It’s a solid fantasy book, if a bit generic. Current books I’m reading also include The Winter King and A Feast For Crows, but I’m looking to read more Indie authors as well!
That's totally okay. If you liked Of Blood and Fire enough to give it 3 or 3.5 stars, I think Of Darkness and Light will completely surprise you in a good way! And The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell is amazing. I found A Feast for Crows to be an okay read on my first read, though! xD
@@PetrikLeo that’s totally fair lmao. I’m a fan of it I think! My next books I think will be a Touch of Light by Thiago Abdalla and the Dunk and Egg novellas by GRRM. Well it's very rare for you and I to have different opinions about a series so I expect to like it. How do you recommend reading it though? Should I follow publication order or something else? Hey petrik, I’ve always loved fantasy but due to your channel I feel like I’ve had a new level of knowledge 😂 as an intermediate fantasy reader do you think this is a good place to start or malazan book of the fallen ?
Thanks for the kind words, Joe! The Bound and the Broken is easier to read than Malazan Book of the Fallen. Much easier. The scope and number of characrers do get bigger in the 3rd book, though! 😁
Your passion makes me want to give this series a second chance. I tried "The Fall" but I had no idea what was happening so I had to DNF. Maybe that was not the book I should have started with?
Try reading Of Blood and Fire...then The Fall. I read The Fall first and appreciated the backstory...all that occurred to start the ball rolling, so to speak. The Fall is important to the big picture and it drops you into the fire quickly (no pun intended!).
I want to read this so bad! Bought the first 2 books late last year in anticipate for the release of the third book “Of War and Ruin,” only to realize it only released as an ebook 😢. Really hope a paperback edition is released at some point, as my prefer for physical books is very, very strong
I started this series just recently and I am 50% through with book #1. To me it feels like this book is drawing so heavily from Inheritance Cycle in particular (and WoT). I was wondering if that trend continues of if it changes by book #2.
I've finished Of Blood and Fire in January and I had a good time with it. I felt it a bit too similar to Eragon for what I wanted. Does it become its own thing in later books?
Love this series so much My favourite ongoing series at the moment and honestly so far it is up there with my favourite series ever the faithful and fallen.
I am at about page 200 of the first book. I love it. One thing though, Petrik, am I missing something? Cahill keeps referring to The Glade as being in the South, but if you look at the map it is in the West. What am I not getting?
@@Jurangi I haven't reread the book so I can't be sure, but I think it can count as south only if the narrative mentioned The Glade as being in the south of Loria. I'm looking at the world map right now and The Glade is definitely located in the west of Epheria.
I’m curious at how the romance is? Is there any? Is it good? I’m definitely going to read it but I’ve had an itch for reading a good romance in an epic fantasy series lol
Thanks for the reply. I'm half tempted to wait until it's finished so that I can binge it if it's that good ahaha Have you read any of his completed series that you can recommend?
It is more epic fantasy, but make no mistake, there are some truly dark and disturbing moments that occur within the story. The characters are all complex and not what you would think on first pass. The bad guys aren't ALL bad...and the good guys aren't ALL good. It is a wonderfully complicated character study...with LOTS of characters that are, in fact, quite unique.
Really solid series so far - definitely reads like Cahill's love letter to fantasy. I'm looking forward to getting the hardcover Of War and Ruin so I can see the interior artwork in its full glory.
I don't know if this is true but I've seen a few things about how maybe his characters don't have enough different tone to them. As in, they are not different enough or recognisable and they "sound" like each other...is this true?
@@PetrikLeo that's a big no-no for me then...it's so off-putting. I can't understand how it can be positively viewed then, if that's the case. It's a huge issue in books I find. I'm about to start Dreams of the Dying and really hope I like it.
@@charlieburrows7490 people experienced them ind differently. Many don't consider the voices sounding similar. As always, experience it for yourself. Also, I loved Dreams of the Dying!
I don’t agree. I’m not saying that the series isn’t good and enjoyable, it is a very well written story. However there are some elements of the story that, for me, prevent it from being one of the greats. One of those elements is the repeated tantrums by a couple of the characters. Little emotional growth is reflected after what are essentially huge life changing experiences. There are points that the story seems to be pushed forward not so much by events but by a couple characters that seem to have their emotions rigidly set, regardless of how much introspection they do. Unfortunately these characters our quite pivotal to the plot and feel of the story. I had to put the series aside after a few books from frustration with this, I will finish the series eventually but I just don’t have that feeling of wanting to continue to immerse myself in the story like I do with those books that I feel are part of the greats.
I find this strange this guy was able to write an entire series in one year this sounds like a SteveStephen King's situation where you have so many books use other people to publish it
Rest assured, he's not hiring anyone. He published three books and 2 novellas in two years. Many authors have achieved that. The author is currently in a writing slump because of his writing pace. xD
@@kaynayrechem I never lived outside of Asia so I might be a bit dense regarding political views in the West and all that. 😅 But from my view as a reader, I never felt anything was unnatural to the story. If I remember correctly, one supporting character in the 3rd book is bi, and the race conflicts are what's contained in many fantasy books: humans vs elves. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much! There's already one! It's The Broken Binding Press edition of The Bound and the Broken. I'm working on the second book now!
Oh definitely! Another one you can check is Dragon Mage by M.L. Spencer! 😄
My goal is to read at least 10 books this year, and indie authors make up most of those (which is why I pay attention to your channel so much haha)
Now that I finished eleventh cycle, time for the bound and broken. Petrik says something's good, I order it.
Pleased you loved Eleventh Cycle! I hope you'll love this series, too, Muxx!
Well it's very rare for you and I to have different opinions about a series so I expect to like it. How do you recommend reading it though? Should I follow publication order or something else? Cuz this website says I should start with the novella (I forget the name of it) before the first book. What would you recommend?
@@muxx2810 i do recommend starting from the novella. Great background to the main series and it's more well written too. To give an idea on how the series will improve later on! 😁
@@PetrikLeo thank you for the advice. I really appreciate how you always respond to the fans thank you
Well I watched this video to find out what I would someday be getting into and okay some deep stuff although I got other books to finish
Take your time. It will be there waiting for you! :)
@PetrikLeo well given that my semester is almost over, I'll almost have nothing but free time. But thank you for giving me the run down of the series without telling to much
Started the series a few days ago, liking it so far!
Yessss! Great to hear that! 😁
I read the battle of the three sisters and i was just in aww..goddamn this series became one of my favorites..and i cant wait for the ice..
Yesss! I have The Ice and I look forward to reading it soon! :)
On my tbr becuz of your rec.
Awesome!
I read the fall and loved it. I'll be reading book one soon then the rest
Of Blood and Fire is slightly weaker than The Fall imo, but Of Darkness and Light beyond is soooo good! 😁
@@PetrikLeo so I've heard. Heard book one was real rough, but everything else is spectacular.
Im 27 books deep so far this year and will likely finish the first powdermage book today
Dang it, Petrik. Moving series to the top of my wishlist. 🤣
🤣🤣
I am collecting the hardcovers of the main novels and novellas but I think I will binge read them once the series is finished
Shouldn't be too long from now. Knowing Cahill, I think the series will be finished in 2024! 😂
Your passion makes me want to give this series a second chance. I tried "The Fall" but I had no idea what was happening so I had to DNF. Maybe that was not the book I should have started with?
I started with The Fall and I enjoyed it! Maybe the series isn't for you. 😂
Try reading Of Blood and Fire...then The Fall. I read The Fall first and appreciated the backstory...all that occurred to start the ball rolling, so to speak. The Fall is important to the big picture and it drops you into the fire quickly (no pun intended!).
@@SheriffJoe thank you
Will anything be spoiled if you read the prequel novella first? Any thoughts on when to read if so? Great review btw :)
Thanks, Samuel! Not at all. The Fall tells the story of the history and lore of the main books. I think it is necessary to read it first actually. 😁
On your recommendation I have bought Of Blood and Fire and The Fall. I keep reading conflicting advise as to which book to read first.
Just dive into which one you feel is right. Can't go wrong with either starting point! :)
Petrik has spoken. :)
Yes. Listen to me. 🤣
I want to read this so bad! Bought the first 2 books late last year in anticipate for the release of the third book “Of War and Ruin,” only to realize it only released as an ebook 😢. Really hope a paperback edition is released at some point, as my prefer for physical books is very, very strong
I felt the exact same way. However, I managed to fire this up on my Kindle as I am just too impatient about some things.
Don't worry! The physical books, paperback included, will be available soon. The author is trying to fit in all the pages into one volume! 😂
I started this series just recently and I am 50% through with book #1. To me it feels like this book is drawing so heavily from Inheritance Cycle in particular (and WoT). I was wondering if that trend continues of if it changes by book #2.
That's the downside of book 1, but it changes. A lot. I wish Inheritance Cycle can be this good. Eragon was damn awful to read in my adulthood...
I've finished Of Blood and Fire in January and I had a good time with it. I felt it a bit too similar to Eragon for what I wanted. Does it become its own thing in later books?
Oh, yes. Quite quickly with Of Darkness and Light. The Exile takes it to a different level altogether and War and Ruin is even better.
Definitely become its own thing after the first book! 😁
Love this series so much
My favourite ongoing series at the moment and honestly so far it is up there with my favourite series ever the faithful and fallen.
Thank you so much! It hasn't reached The Faithful and the Fallen yet for me but who knows, it might reach it when it's finished. We'll see! 😃
I am at about page 200 of the first book. I love it. One thing though, Petrik, am I missing something? Cahill keeps referring to The Glade as being in the South, but if you look at the map it is in the West. What am I not getting?
I actually completely forgot about that! Wow, that would be a mistake, though. The Glade is definitely in the West. xD
@Petrik Leo well it is in the south if you are talking about just the north and the south areas
Some romance here and there, and I think they're well done. Romance is not the main focus of the series, though. :)
Hey, is there a rough timeline we can expect the series to finish? This sounds like my kind of series
Nothing confirmed but knowing Cahill's output, most likely in 2024, the latest in 2025.
Thanks for the reply. I'm half tempted to wait until it's finished so that I can binge it if it's that good ahaha
Have you read any of his completed series that you can recommend?
@@JoshSinnott97 not yet. This is his first series! The author plan to finish the series in 2024 or 2025 the latest! 😃
I would like to read this, but like so much self pub it's only available on Amazon and I have Kobo.
Yeahhh that's unfortunate but Amazon often has the biggest market for self pub fantasy!
I would LOVE TO but I need polish translation 😢🙈
I hope there will be more translation soon! 😃
Will there be an audiobook release Of War and Ruin?
I think so. Eventually!
Where are people buying this series? It isn't in any book stores near me. I really want to read this in either print or e book format.
Most likely Amazon or The Broken Binding! :)
I'm really interested in this series. Is it dark fantasy?
It's not. More in tune to classic/heroic fantasy. 😁
@@PetrikLeo I see, thanks for the response.
@@SheriffJoe great
What is the order of the books?
As you can see the thumbnails is pretty much the reading order. 😃
@@PetrikLeo thanks 🫂
Really solid series so far - definitely reads like Cahill's love letter to fantasy. I'm looking forward to getting the hardcover Of War and Ruin so I can see the interior artwork in its full glory.
I completely agree, Craig!! 😊 Can't wait for mine, too!
I don't know if this is true but I've seen a few things about how maybe his characters don't have enough different tone to them. As in, they are not different enough or recognisable and they "sound" like each other...is this true?
I'd say yes in the first book. And even a few characters in the 2nd book. But most of them are very distinct, imo, especially in the 3rd book. 😁
Will this be a ten book series?
It will be a 5 novels plus 5 novellas series. 😃
@@PetrikLeo thanks!
Nothing wrong with that. Hope your next read is better!
Hmm, i feel the characters are a bit too emotional. Everyone goes about honor, family...
Haha Ryan has tweeted about this somewhere.
😂@@PetrikLeo
I find this strange this guy was able to write an entire series in one year this sounds like a SteveStephen King's situation where you have so many books use other people to publish it
Rest assured, he's not hiring anyone. He published three books and 2 novellas in two years. Many authors have achieved that. The author is currently in a writing slump because of his writing pace. xD
Do you just read your goodreads reviews in the videos lol
It's the other way around. I just copy paste my review here to Goodreads. 😅
This series doesn’t have modern political preaching does it?
I seriously have no idea what you mean. 😅
@@PetrikLeo no worries! I just mean pushing same sex content, racial stuff. I just want a great story being told without today baggage.
