Man the reason I listen to you is that you review self-published books also and there's so many good self-published trilogies out there it's ridiculous I'm glad that somebody's giving them recognition they deserve it they're good authors also keep up the good work man
@@PetrikLeo also don't hear a lot of people talk about The Traitor's Son cycle by Miles Cameron and the Kingdom of Grit trilogy by Tyler Whitesides or the Lot Lands trilogy by Jonathan French there are so many good books published or self-published out there that people haven't read keep up the good work man
Petrik, thank you for highlighting why 'The Queen's Thief' series is suitable for both YA and Adult Fantasy readers. It's an absolutely amazing series and I hope you get to pick it up someday. Thank you for taking the time to share other recommendations.
You're welcome. Thank other readers who mentioned The Queen's Thief, though! :D I only own the first book so far, I'll try to acquire them first before reading the series. It will still be a while! :)
I don't hear much talk abut The Dragonbone Chair or much of Tad Williams. I think his books should get more love. Beautiful writing, engaging people, and a great world.
I just finished Shadows of the Apt series and it was fantastic. And Long Price Quartet is one of my favourite series ever. Glad to see both of them in this list.
Wow, great to hear about Memoirs of Lady Trent! I love the series so much but I've never heard anyone on YT talk about it. Such a shame. The first book is so so but it gets better till the end of the series. Hope you will like it!
LPQ is excellent, and you're right -- Allen (The Long Price Prophet) has been a great advocate of it. The Banished Lands deserve all the love they get, and, though I have only read Kings of Paradise, I can agree that Ruka from Ash and Sand is a standout character. As for Wars of Light of Shadow, I am confident that I will end up rating it one of the masterpieces of the fantasy genre. Cheers, Petrik!
Thanks, Philip! Hahaha, Allen the Long Price Prophet is such an apt title. I totally agree that Banished Lands deserve all the love! And I think you'll love Ruka more after you proceed with the series. I look forward to catching up with you on Wars of Light and Shadow! :)
I don't like when you do videos like this, because it adds to my already massive TBR! Out of this list, I've read Codex Alera, The Long Price Quartet, The Banished Lands Saga, and Ash and Sand Trilogy. I do have The Last War, Rivers of London, The Five Warrior Angels, Wars of Light and Shadow, and Shadows of the Apt on my TBR already. As for doing an overhyped video, I think that's a good idea as long as you use the same format that you did for this one.
Hahaha whoops! And hey, you've read some here, James! Well done. The Five Warrior Angels and The Last War trilogy are amazing. If I do end up making overhyped video, I will certainly do it in a format like this! :)
Great video. Surprisingly, I have read part of or all of eight of these series. Perhaps the most under rated is Janny Wurts. Her Empire series is wonderful, however, her Wars of Light and Shadows is excellent and quite complex but where Malazan just drops you in, Wurts makes the entrance into the series a bit easier. I'm really surprised that the Dandelion Dynasty books were not mentioned, I read the Grace of Kings and must get back to them. I am also looking forward to Durfee's conclusion in November.
Thank you so much, Frank! The Dandelion Dynasty was mentioned only once. I guess in a way, that makes it even more underhyped. I think I've approached this video the opposite way. I should've gone from the most mentioned to the less mentioned... xD I look forward to reading Wars of Light and Shadow and the conclusion to Five Warrior Angels, too!
Really happy to see The Divine Cities trilogy made the list! Probably the best fantasy series I’ve read that pretty much no one has heard of when I mention it.
Oh my goodness, what a genius video idea, Petrik! You reminded me of Fantasy series I hadn't officially added to my TBR list yet, or put other ones on my radar! Now I have 34 books on that list (most of them are series 🤡), really need to catch up but my local library has almost none of them. I can still rely on my Kindle, but some of them are so gorgeous with maps and illustrations, it's a shame reading them virtually! 😢 And I can't have too many books - and I have too many already - as we're moving to another country next year. The struggle is real 😅 I might just crack and buy The Longprice Quartet online. I found a bind up of the 2 first books. 👀
Thank you very much! Yeah, I tend to read from my Kindle unless it has illustrations. Then I settle for physical copy hahaha. The 2 bind up volumes of Long Price Quartet are the one I own! I hope you'll love the series. It's a slow burn but worthwhile, imo! 😊
Yes, I mentioned Ash and Sand on your community tag. I just think it has everything some of the most popular series have, it's amazing. Also, I'm kinda surprised some of these are underhyped, damn.
Hi Petrik! You have some great list in your video. Among the books you've mentioned, the only books I got are 2 from the Licanius trilogy, The Forgetting Moon and 5 from the Shadows of the Apt series. And yes, I agree that most books mentioned in this list are rarely highlighted and most of which the first time I'm hearing them with the exception of John Gwyne's works and the Rook and Rose series. So will probably add these books to my long list of what to get or read =D
Thank you so much! I agree that Gwynne's books are hard to be considered underrated or underhyped now, especially in SFF community. I'm glad the video proved useful for you! 😁
Anything John Gwynne for me is now an auto buy. He is my favourite author ever. In terms of recent reads then I found the last War by Mike shackle absolutely outstanding and I can’t understand why it is not more popular.
Thanks Petrik, I really enjoyed the video. I agree that Codex Alera is a very entertaining read. I read it years ago and was sorry when it came to an end. Out of your list, I have only read 3 completely. I also have read Master Assassins but didn't know a 2nd book had come out. My vote is for more underrated series. I like the hidden gems. I just finished reading the Winnowing Flame series. I loved it. It was very easy to slip away into that world.
Thank you so much, Irene! Yeah, I'm still thinking about how I'll proceed with making part 2 of this video. There are still 235 series unmentioned, after all. I'm so pleased to hear you loved Winnowing Flame trilogy! :)
I love reading series with gods in them, or some unique magic systems and unusual characters, I feel like I am missing a lot because I am not the kind of person to try a new series without reviews or recommendations, so I rely on your opinions actually. I loved sons of darkness so I am looking forward and also going through your previous videos for some underrated unique series to pick. Hopefully I keep getting lucky!
I'm so surprised, I recently just caught up with The Pattern of Shadow and Light series and I can't believe how almost non existent it is on UA-cam. I was hoping maybe it would appear here but oh well, I got plenty more to add to my TBR tho! Great video!
I really have to read Pattern of Shadow and Light series someday. Heard many amazing things about it!! It's such a shame the author passed away before the series is finished. 😭
I loved both The Memoirs of Lady Trent and The Long Price Quartet. Both series have weaker first books, but the story gets so much better later on. For those that like audiobooks, Kate Reading did a spectacular performance for The Memoirs of Lady Trent series.
Yeah, that's what I heard for Memoirs of Lady Trent. I don't mind, though. I usually give two books in a series a try before deciding to give up or continue with it! 😊
This was amazing, Petrik! Thank you for bringing attention to all these series through an ambitious outreach project! I do wonder how much the algorithm plays a role in these series not seeming to get mentioned much. For example, I saw the Mask of Mirrors book mentioned on a ton of channels I was following last year (I started feeling some FOMO), but none of those channels have nearly as many subscribers as Elliot Brooks. That said, it’s wonderful that you’re brining attention to these series on your channel, which continues to grow for good reason 😊.
Thank you so much, Johanna! Yeah I agree with you. Sometimes the people we follow or subscribed to on booktube can make us THINK some series are popular while they're still not when you look outside of UA-cam. I probably heard Mask of Mirrors being mentioned by two or three people on Booktube! xD
Thank you, David! Yeah, Banished Lands USED to be underrated/underhype, but imo certainly not now. Still not to the point of being siper popular, but not underhype. It can't hurt for the series to gain even more popularity, though. 😃
Great video. I'm getting the River of London series. I love urban fantasy. Loved Dresden Files. Would love more urban fantasy recs. Thank you. Lynn in AZ
Don't know if you've read it yet but The Lotlands trilogy by Jonathan French is another great underrated series. It's got some of the best, most intense action scenes in this genre and some very interesting takes on some stock fantasy races, half-orcs in particular. Despite that, it barely gets talked about anywhere on social media.
I blame the cover art for that one. I REALLY enjoy The Grey Bastards, and I still need to continue with the series. But I know the ugly new cover art has stopped many readers from starting the series in the first place. 🙃
Good list Petrik! Honestly, your channel is the only one I really saw talking about War for the Rose Throne so I think that should definitely be on this list.
A great idea Petrik and it's always so good to hear our Booktube fantasy expert talk about series that might be not so well known to the wider public. Thank you for all your recommendations !
Sir Petrik. I actually have a suggestion: Bas Lag series and city and the city by China Mieville. Perdido street station and the city and the city are some of my favourite
Great idea for a video! I definitely need to read Licanius! Love to see The Banished Lands on there :). The Last War is amazing. Rivers of London is great fun as well! Will
Thank you, brothers! I don't think your dad's books are underhyped anymore, though, but they remain fantastic and the more readers reading them the better. Yes, you have to read Licanius trilogy! :D
Awesome video!!! It’s neat to see results from so many different readers and to see different books being talked about that don’t get as much love on UA-cam. I definitely want to check out the Rivers of London series now!
Thank you so much, Jamie! There are still so many awesome books and series in the world. I'm glad I can shed more light on them. I hope you'll love Rivers of London! 😁
Loved this video & the book suggestions. I've been reading fantasy for over 40 years - and it's SO GOOD to see the genre widely loved and enjoyed, as well as the explosion in sub-genres (especially things like military and flintlock fantasy) that's now out there.
I think his Long Price Quartet is such a brilliant and original fantasy series. I will forever be grateful for stumbling upon this absolute gem! Must have seen it on a list or another many years ago and picked it up out of curiosity. Haven't seen it in many lists since then and I keep thinking how lucky I was to find it!
Ash and Sand by Richard Nell is incredible! One of my absolute favourites. I'm convinced that there is a 100% onverlap between people who enjoy books by Abercrombie and Nell. Also, I can highly recommend reaing Rivers of London via audiobook. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith does an amazing job, on a par with James Marsters in Dresden Files. What I'm missing here is Manifest Delusions by Michael R. Fletcher.
@@PetrikLeo Oh, and another one that rarely gets mentioned is the Shattered Sea Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. It is SO good, and all people talk about is always just First Law. And, yeah, gotta reread Ash and Sand at some point. Also, I gotta look into Nell's follow-up to the series, Dark Sea's End, a pirate novel set in the Ash and Sand world. Sounds truly awesome.
Thank you so much for doing this video! I have read 6 of the series you've posted on this video and I agree with you for the ones I've read - they are incredibly engaging and I could hardly put them down... a sure sign that they are a rollicking good time! I had a book handover after the Codex Alera, in fact. I hope more readers give these series a chance. I've got the remaining series I haven't read on my TBR - thank you again!
Thanks for another great video. If you do pick up Rivers of London try it as an audiobook. Just like Marsters does for the Dresden Files, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith narration takes the series to another level.
Thanks Petrik for these types of videos. As a relative newcomer to this genre, I'm always looking for more recommendations to add to my list of books and authors to read. You are a huge contributor to this list!
Keep up the fantastic work, and please know that your efforts are making a positive impact on the literary community. Looking forward to more inspiring reviews from your channel.
I’m going to have to give Rivers of London a shot since I love the Dresden Files. Have you read the Alex Verus series? It’s supposedly similar to the Dresden Files as well.
Divine Cities is definitely something I want to read. I love the Craft Sequence, and this sounds like it will satisfy that ich for more series like that. And 5 Warrior Angels is critically underrated. Brian Lee Dufree has such beautiful writing.
Divine Cities and Craft Sequence have similarities. Both of them belong in urban high fantasy subgenre too. I think Divine Cities is much better, though. I hope you'll love it. Ans completely agree that Five Warrior Angels deserves so much more recognition!
I love these types of videos, so many hidden gems! I really want to read the long price quartet. I’m really interested in the rook and rose trilogy and I own tee first one. I really enjoyed book 1&2 in the rivers of London. It is very popular here in the UK. It is always compared to Dresden files a lot. Great video, Petrik🥰
This was definitely worth your while, Petrik. Such a great resource! It's heartening to see a few self-pub series mentioned multiple times on this list, too. I think Janny Wurts is finally coming into the spotlight a bit more, so that one might be changing. Thanks for all your hard work! (BTW, just waiting for a preorder link to come through. I'll be reaching out soon, but might be tomorrow. Can't wait to share! Thanks again!)
Thank you so much, Vaughn! It was great to see some self-pub series mentioned here as well. I'm happy about it, too, and I really hope Janny Wurts series will shine even more. She's such a great person with a great vision for her books. I'll be waiting for the pre-order link! :)
i love that on you channel you talk a lot about "lesser known" books which makes it easier for me to discover new series i might be interested in, so thank you for that
You're welcome! I try to talk about both popular and lesser known books, pretty much all the books I love, and it seems like people like it when I talk about lesser known books more. 😁
I loved Codex Alera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good yarn. Tchaikovsky just entered my reading plan for next month. Rook and Rose I have, and it shot up in my TBR too. Rivers of London I might pick up in the future too. In fact ,you should do a Part 2 covering all the series everyone suggested in the comments that weren't mentioned in the video.
Yay! I've read quite a few of these. It makes me quite happy to know that I am reading and enjoying many of the underrated series. I did DNF 2 of them also. Anxious to try some of the ones I haven't yet attempted. Thanks for pulling all the info together and telling us about these!
@@historymax5479 I DNFd the banished lands saga after book 2 (I started book 3 actually). & I DNFd the five warrior angels. Both were just too dark for me. I really tried with Banished because so many friends love it, but I couldn’t.
I definitely concur with the Redick, Durfee, and Shackle recommendations. Exceptional authors. And I think the Richard Nell and Robert Jackson Bennett trilogies will have to move up my TBR after this video. As a lover of grimdark I found the Lady Trent series a bit too whimsical. Not bad just not for me. I loved the first four Tchaikovsky books, but found the next two a struggle, so I never finished the series. I can't say why they were a struggle without spoiling the first four 😉. Here's hoping this video gets these authors a bit more recognition. Great job Petrik.
Thank you so much! I certainly have to read Redick's series! And yeah, you have to try Ash and Sand trilogy and Divine Cities trilogy! Maybe even more for Ash and Sand as you have a preference for grimdark. I tend to like whimsical fantasy series as well, so here's hoping I'll like Memoirs of Lady Trent!
Thank you for this Petrik - really appreciate your commitment to bringing these titles to our attention. I'm going to check our local library to see whats available and get stuck in.
I absolutely love that you put so much effort into shining a light on underhyped/underrated series, you are the best!! It makes me SO happy to see Rook & Rose here, because both of those books made it into my top 10 of last year. And same for Memoirs of Lady Trent, that series is absolutely delightful. I recently reread them all and they are just the best comfort reads ever, though they also have a lot of depth and interesting themes woven in there! The audiobooks are fantastic. I am dying to get to Five Warrior Angels, because I just know that those books will fit my reading tastes perfectly. Once again, thanks for making this video!! All the hard work paid off, I love it! 🥰
Aww thank you so much, Esmay! You read plenty of underhype/underrated books, too. It's great to hear how much you love Rook and Rose trilogy and also Memoirs of Lady Trent. I think I will read Memoirs of Lady Trent next year! Then maybe Rook and Rose the year after, we'll see. And yes, please give Five Warrior Angels a read. It's awesome! 😁
@@PetrikLeo I actually think Rook & Rose would be more up your alley... I mean, I clearly love them both, but I think I'd recommend you to prioritise Rook & Rose over Lady Trent ;))) In any case, happy reading!!
I adore the Rook and Rose series by M.A. Carrick and the Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. Both series deserve more recognition. They are excellent! Thank you for highlighting them.
These are very underrated: The dwarves by Markus heitz The elven by bernhard hennen Truth serie by dawn cook Bartimaeus by jonathan stroud Temeraire by naomi novik Night watch by sergej lukianenko
@@PetrikLeo your welcome. I hope there is at least one you like or find interessting. 3 are translations into english, that is why they are very unknown.
This was very interesting! I've read three of these - Queen's Thief, A Natural History of Dragons (Memoirs of Lady Trent), and Rivers of London - and they're all favorites, so it would seem I should trust these recommendations :)
Great video, Petrik! Some of these are on my list (and shelves) to pick up hopefully soon. I’ve read the first Rivers of London book but need to continue - this was a good reminder!
Great recommendations and quite a few books that end up on my reading list. I actually began reading Janny Wurts' series back in the day when it began to be published, and the more or less enjoyed the first couple of books. I think it was by Grand Conspiracy, however, that her prose style began to feel way too flowery and purple for my taste - I can't recall quite why, but I remember being actually angry about it. Which was a shame, because the plotline was quite fascinating at the time (although nowadays it would perhaps feel less fresh, I fear). I really enjoyed the Empire Trilogy she wrote with Raymond E. Feist, though, that was a fantastic series.
Thank you so much! Ah, that's too bad, but I also think that's a understandable and valid reason on why the series ended up not working for you. Grand Conspiracy is book 5, let's see how I'll feel when I get there someday. Glad we agree that Empire trilogy is amazing, though! :D
I loved Codex Alera, and it definitely isn't getting as much attention as Dresden files (love those too). John Gwynne is amazing. I never thought I'd enjoy such story and setting, his writing and characters are incredibly captivating. I think he's slowly getting the much deserved praise and attention. I've recently bought the Licanius trilogy and Rivers of London.. very excited for these as I've heard good things about both!
I did not like Codex Alera, I'm glad you loved it, though! And yes, it's so cool to see Gwynne keep getting more recognition. I hope you'll love Licanius trilogy. It's SO GOOD, imo! :)
I’m so glad Memoirs of Lady Trent is on here!!! Can confirm, those books are so easy to read, so much fun, and just overall a blast. Also loved the Divine Cities - though for me Foundryside was really the only book from Founders that I liked. I really need to start recording reviews again… 😅😂
I will read Memoirs of Lady Trent next year. Many have agreed it is a great fun and light-hearted series! Ah, too bad you didn't like Founders trilogy, but I'm glad you loved Divine Cities trilogy! :)
i think the kingdom of grit series by tyler whitesides is very underrated! i bought the first one after seeing it in one of your videos and im now reading the third book and its become one of my favourite series of all times, i can't believe i never see anyone talk about it
Oh, I own the trilogy for a while now. I definitely agree that Kingdom of Grit would fit the bill! I VERY rarely hear anyone, even outside of booktube, talk about it! :D
Agree about The Five Warrior Angels. Very underrated ~ about 1000ish Goodreads ratings? I think the books deserve a wider readership among epic fantasy readers.
@@PetrikLeo 💯 agree. From your list I have tried many and stopped after Book 1 or 2. The one I was particularly keen on was Wars of Light and Shadow but after 2 books, I realised I can't continue with the writing style for 9 more books so I quit😔.
I have read the Long Price Quartet, I still dont get the whole posing thing, but jeepers the ending of book 3 blew my socks off. I have read We Are the Dead and really enjoyed it. I have started reading City of Stairs but havent got far yet
The whole posing thing is something that is Asian-inspired, I think. I know some Asian cultures adapt the manner of speaking words through a pose. But yeah, An Autumn War is my favorite of the series. That ending was crazy! I hope you'll love The Last War trilogy and Divine Cities trilogy!
The Legacy Trilogy by Matthew Ward, the Echoes Saga by Philip C. Quaintrell, the Winnowing Flame Trilogy by Jen Williams, The Shadow Campaigns by Django Wexler and Gods of Blood and Powder by Brian McClellan should be on the list. They're all absolutely amazing. Legacy and Echoes are actually in my top 5 fave series of all time, and Winnowing Flame and Blood and Powder in my top 10. It's truly a shame that none of these are that well-known. They're way better than a lot of other books that are popular now. Legacy in particular is the best character-driven tragedy I've ever read. It's dark and heartbreaking.
Great list! You know what I think of Legacy (I've read only the first book), Echoes Saga, and Winnowing Flame trilogy; I agree that these are VERY underhyped and underrated. Shadow Campaigns as well. I don't think Blood and Powder by Brian McClellan are so underhyped and underrated though. Every book in the Powder Mage series has a high number of ratings and very positive ratings. But I do agree that somehow it doesn't get mentioned often!
In Ash and Sand series by Richard Nell , the second book was the book where I found out the difference between Ruka and Kale's storylines' timeline. This series was amazing.
Not to sound demanding (this is just a gentle suggestion) but I think it would be a good idea if you also make a video for those series that only got one or two votes since they are the truly underrated ones. Also, it would be fun to discover a series that way. Edit: i realize it might take a very long time. a simple list maybe?
I'm still thinking about it, but there are 235 series left, I wonder what to do about them. Maybe... I can put the one mentioned twice and thrice? I don't think I can mention all the ones mentioned only once. The video will be 5 hours long.
@@myribstellmesheslying I'll think about it! Maybe I'll list the one mentioned twice and thrice (that's like 40 series) and then for the one mentioned once (almost 200) I'll just put them as a written list. 😅
I read City of Stairs before the pandemic, a book pick from The Sword and Laser podcast, I didn't enjoy reading it maybe because I was not in the mood or was distracted. I might re read the series again someday
I’ve read and enjoyed Durfee and Nell. I love Brian Lee and his channel. Fwiw, Anybody with a kindle I highly recommend Master Li and Number 10 Ox (anthology)
Patrick, the problem is the first three books of the codex Alera Are setting things up for the whole story. I actually had the pleasure of reading the second three books. I did try to read the first three but they didn’t interest me. I started off weeding second III and I went straight through them all.
Ah, I see. I'm not sure I want to continue with the series at the moment. I feel like it is so cliched and everything is too predictable to my liking. But who knows, never say never. I might just end up reading it someday when I don't have too many priority books to read! :)
Will definitely have to come back to this list when I need a new series to start. Super happy to see the Lady Trent Memoirs on here. It’s just really really good. -T
@@PetrikLeo I think so but I’m not really sure. I don’t know if I prefer the series to be finished or that it’s not and have to wait for the next book 😬. There are short stories, novellas and graphic novels too, but I’ve only read a couple of those.
@@PetrikLeo Jesus Christ Petrik. You weren't kidding. Fuckkkk. That ending is absolutely unlike anything I've ever read. The Price of Spring. What a Goddamn title for the final installment. Daniel Abraham is a Genius
It's gotta be Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber, for me. Super influential and amazing quality. I don't even think we'd have DnD without those books, and so you can count all DnD inspired things out. :)
What wouldn't I give to read The Thief for the first time. Megan seems to have a solid and loyal fanbase, but I wasn't aware it was underhyped...but now that I think about it, yes. The Queen's Thief is very underhyped.
I own the first book in the series, I have to give it a read! I think the YA label put me off on it for quite a while, but now that I heard from plenty of readers it can be enjoyed by adult fantasy readers as well, I'll give it a whirl! :)
Cheers Petrik for your tireless fantasy cheerleading, particularly we lesser known writers. It means a lot.
Cheers, Richard! Always thankful to have read Ash and Sand trilogy! 😁

Yes, I mentioned Ash and Sand on your community tag. I just think it has everything some of the most popular series have, it's amazing. Also, I'm kinda surprised some of these are underhyped, damn.
I totally agree. Such an incredible series. It's kinda crazy that it's still so underhyped!
The Lady Trent series is so different and interesting- a truly engaging journey. I'm glad you are going to read it!
Thank you, Suzanne! I'm excited to read it next year! :)
Always love seeing underrated series shown love. Good job convincing me to pick up Master Assassins
Awesome! I hope you'll love it, Jorden! 😁
I entirely agree that The Queen's Thief is an incredible series that is under-hyped. Thanks for highlighting it!
I have to read the series someday! 😁
John Gwynne is an auto-buy for me, too. And yeah, kinda crazy how unpopular The Last War trilogy is! :/
Great Video! Really enjoyed Memoirs of Lady Trent. It's a lighthearted read that's perfect between bigger series.
Thank you so much, my friend! I'm hoping to read the series next year! 😁
I feel the Echoes Saga is criminally underrated. Easily one of my all-time favourites.
I totally agree, Dylan. I'm still reading through it, but it's still certainly underhyped!
I'm just glad my recommendations are clicking well with you! Sons of Darkness is awesome. I'll keep doing my best to find more great books!
I agree! I was so saddened when I found that out.
I probably heard Mask of Mirrors being mentioned by two or three people on Booktube! xD
Banished Lands might be a bit of a stretch, but all of the other ones I agree 100%! Cool video Petrik
Thank you, David! Yeah, Banished Lands USED to be underrated/underhype, but imo certainly not now. Still not to the point of being siper popular, but not underhype. It can't hurt for the series to gain even more popularity, though. 😃
@@PetrikLeo Oh 100%. Love that more ppl are gonna know about it because of this video!🔥🔥🔥
Great video. I'm getting the River of London series. I love urban fantasy. Loved Dresden Files. Would love more urban fantasy recs. Thank you. Lynn in AZ
Thank you! Once i've read more urban fantasy books and series, I'll make a recommendation video on it! :)
Heck YEAH, Queen's Thief! It's my favorite series, and it's so good to see it getting attention.
I have to read it someday!! :)
Thank you! I totally agree that War for the Rose Throne belong in the series. It's so good! But so few people talk about it. 😅
A great idea Petrik and it's always so good to hear our Booktube fantasy expert talk about series that might be not so well known to the wider public. Thank you for all your recommendations !
You're welcome, and thank you so much for the kind words!! 😁
Sir Petrik. I actually have a suggestion: Bas Lag series and city and the city by China Mieville. Perdido street station and the city and the city are some of my favourite
I already have those in my TBR! People recommended it to me already. 😁
Great video Petrik! I’m hoping to read LPQ and Licanius soon and many of these are on my tbr. Hope you have a good day!
Thank you, Drew! Have a great day, too. LPQ and Licanius are must read! :)
I really enjoyed reading The Traitor Son Cycle Series by Miles Cameron, always felt it was a bit underrated.
I didn't like that series after reading 2 books, but that's just me. I think it has often been mentioned as underrated series as well!
I think we're living in the golden age of fantasy! SO MANY options for amazing fantasy books now! :)
Daniel Abrahams books are always great reads... not to mention his awesome work on The Expanse as one half of James S.A Corey
Exactly! I wish more people will give his fantasy books a read, too! :)
Fletcher.
YESSSSS! Ruka son of Beyla!!! What a character! I have to reread the series someday!
Hey! You're so welcome. You've read 6 from the list, that's amazing! 😁
Thanks for another great video. If you do pick up Rivers of London try it as an audiobook. Just like Marsters does for the Dresden Files, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith narration takes the series to another level.
You're welcome! And thanks for the suggestion!! :)
Always a delight to see a video from Petrik!!
Thank you, Kunal! 😁
Thanks Petrik for these types of videos. As a relative newcomer to this genre, I'm always looking for more recommendations to add to my list of books and authors to read. You are a huge contributor to this list!
You're so welcome! I'm pleased to hear that. Always means a lot to me that people find great books through my recommendation! 😁
Keep up the fantastic work, and please know that your efforts are making a positive impact on the literary community. Looking forward to more inspiring reviews from your channel.
Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear that. I will have to focus more on positive comments like yours than very few negative ones. :)
Man, how I love seeing the Long Price Quartet popping up! It deserves all the readership!!! ❤❤❤
Super criminally underrated series! It needs more readership!
I’m going to have to give Rivers of London a shot since I love the Dresden Files. Have you read the Alex Verus series? It’s supposedly similar to the Dresden Files as well.
I haven't read Alex Verus yet, but yes pretty much everyone agreed it's suitable to Dresden Files fans. Even Jim Butcher himself agreed! 😂
@@PetrikLeo I like that name for Divine Cities and the Craft Sequence, Urban High Fantasy.
I can confirm that The Divine Cities trilogy is really good!
Great video, Petrik🥰
thank you so much, Holly!! Long Price Quartet is really good. I look forward to reading Rook and Rose trilogy, too! :)
Well done! I really like recommendations out of the beaten track.
Thank you, Leticia! I'll try to make another video mentioning the unmentioned series here! 😁
i love that on you channel you talk a lot about "lesser known" books which makes it easier for me to discover new series i might be interested in, so thank you for that
You're welcome! I try to talk about both popular and lesser known books, pretty much all the books I love, and it seems like people like it when I talk about lesser known books more. 😁
Yass!!! Let's hear it for underhyped books!! Love this list!
Woohoo! Thank you so much, Trin!
Part 2 covering ALL the series mentioned? There are 235 series still not mentioned... the video will be 6 hours long. 😅
@@PetrikLeo I meant another vote
@@historymax5479 Oh! That makes so much more sense hahaha. We'll see. I might do this again someday!
Love your content! So nice to see videos being made for not-well-known or underground books
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Yay! I've read quite a few of these. It makes me quite happy to know that I am reading and enjoying many of the underrated series.
I did DNF 2 of them also.
Anxious to try some of the ones I haven't yet attempted.
Thanks for pulling all the info together and telling us about these!
Which ones did you DNF, actually?
You're so welcome, friend! It's great that you're reading and enjoying underrated series, too! 😁
Rewatching to get hyped for some new potential books and series! Great list!!
Thank you so much, Theo! I will post another one of these video soon! 😊
Thank you for this Petrik - really appreciate your commitment to bringing these titles to our attention. I'm going to check our local library to see whats available and get stuck in.
You're welcome, Annie! And I'm glad the video is proving useful for you! :)
Loved this video. Some new series made my TBR (in the far future though🙂)
Thank you!! Haha, that makes the both of us! 😁
Wish ya would have at least given a quick synopsis of these series. But still an awesome video brother!
Thank you, Wade! I thought of doing that but increased the length of the video significantly. 😂
Great video! I wrote all these down as you went through them so I can see if they are something I need to add to my TBR.
Thank you so much, Noelani! I hope you find some amazing series from this list! :)
Great Video! War for the Rose Throne is great!
Thank you so much, Gregory! I agree with that! :)
I adore the Rook and Rose series by M.A. Carrick and the Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. Both series deserve more recognition. They are excellent! Thank you for highlighting them.
That's wonderful to hear! I look forward to reading them. I can't believe I haven't read anything by Marie Brennan yet! 😅
I always get something good out of all your videos!
That's always good to hear!! 😃
These are very underrated:
The dwarves by Markus heitz
The elven by bernhard hennen
Truth serie by dawn cook
Bartimaeus by jonathan stroud
Temeraire by naomi novik
Night watch by sergej lukianenko
Damn, I haven't read any of these. Thanks for the recommendation!
Haha, I guess that's a definite sign you should read more from this list!! 😃
Indeed! :)
I was thinking of BLEED and RJB, also Andrew Rowe. Glad the first two made the list.
I don't think anyone mentioned Andrew Rowe in the 250 series! Arcane Ascension would be fitting, though!
The Divine Cities is in my top five fantasy series. I adore these books. Especially City of Blades.
My favorite is City of Miracles, but the entire trilogy is great! 😊
Great video, Petrik! Some of these are on my list (and shelves) to pick up hopefully soon. I’ve read the first Rivers of London book but need to continue - this was a good reminder!
Thank you so much, Brittany! I need to check Rivers of London as well! :D
Hi 👋 thank you this video, intriguing books you’ve put on the list... happy Fall 🍁🍂🍃🕸 reading to you!! 🎥🎬
Thank you! Happy reading to you too!
Halfway through the Price of Spring right now! Definitely in my Top 10 Fantasy series!
Woohoo! The ending is soooo good. Enjoy!
i think the kingdom of grit series by tyler whitesides is very underrated! i bought the first one after seeing it in one of your videos and im now reading the third book and its become one of my favourite series of all times, i can't believe i never see anyone talk about it
Oh, I own the trilogy for a while now. I definitely agree that Kingdom of Grit would fit the bill! I VERY rarely hear anyone, even outside of booktube, talk about it! :D
That third book though dived off the cliff right at the end
I definitely have the Lady Trent books on my list. As well as the divine city books.
I totally approve Divine Cities, I still have to read Memoirs of Lady Trent, too! 😃
This was a great video idea! I was shocked when I read Malice just how good it was. I was shocked tbh.
Thank you! And hey, the rest of the series is even better. Malice is one of John Gwynne's weakest book, in comparison! :)
That has me very excited
Agree about The Five Warrior Angels. Very underrated ~ about 1000ish Goodreads ratings? I think the books deserve a wider readership among epic fantasy readers.
When I read it, I think it was below 1000 ratings. Makes me super sad. 😢 I hope Lonesome Crown will bring more readers to the trilogy!
@@PetrikLeo 💯 agree. From your list I have tried many and stopped after Book 1 or 2. The one I was particularly keen on was Wars of Light and Shadow but after 2 books, I realised I can't continue with the writing style for 9 more books so I quit😔.
The Five Warrior Angels, so far, is tremendous!!! Definitely one of my favorite fantasy series out there. Cannot wait until Lonesome Crown!!!
Hear hear! Keeping my fingers crossed Lonesome Crown will be even better!
Great video idea!!!
Thanks!
I have City of Stairs on my TBR this month. Hope I love it as much as everyone else XD
It's so good, imo, Azu. I hope you'll feel the same about it as we did! :)
Have you listened to the audiobooks for Matthew Ward or Phillip C Quaintrell? I'm eyeing both of those stories on Audible...
@@HooptyHoops Read them, actually. But I did check the audio. They're great in either format.
I agree Legacy is so damn good
Yeah, I think Kings of Ash was different and the author took a brave risk in doing the story that way. It worked for me, though! :)
@@PetrikLeo haha. I realized that belatedly. Maybe a list? Now I'm really curious about what series were losted there.
@@myribstellmesheslying I'll think about it! Maybe I'll list the one mentioned twice and thrice (that's like 40 series) and then for the one mentioned once (almost 200) I'll just put them as a written list. 😅
You sir have become my favourite booktuber
Haha, thank you so much, Joe! :)
I read City of Stairs before the pandemic, a book pick from The Sword and Laser podcast, I didn't enjoy reading it maybe because I was not in the mood or was distracted. I might re read the series again someday
Ah, sometimes you're reading a book in a wrong mood or timing. I hope your second attempt will be better! :)
Super off topic from video Petrik but I gotta ask. Have you read Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure manga series?
I haven't. I watched the anime adaptation until the end of Stardust Crusader, though. I still have to check out season 4-6 of the anime series!
I’ve read and enjoyed Durfee and Nell. I love Brian Lee and his channel.
Fwiw, Anybody with a kindle I highly recommend Master Li and Number 10 Ox (anthology)
Brian Lee Durfee and Richard Nell are great storytellers!! :)
I was hoping to see The Long Price on here! It's fantastic, my favourite series that I read in 2021.
It's crazy how Long Price almost always appears on underrated/underhyped fantasy series videos now, and IT STILL hasn't become something popular yet.
-T
Awesome! And I have to read Memoirs of Lady Trent next year! :)
Yay! I love Rivers of London! I read #6 The hanging tree last week and now I’m sad to be reaching the end of the main series
That's great! Is the series completed already? I haven't looked into it!
@@PetrikLeo I think so but I’m not really sure. I don’t know if I prefer the series to be finished or that it’s not and have to wait for the next book 😬. There are short stories, novellas and graphic novels too, but I’ve only read a couple of those.
Robert V.S. Redick is an amazing author. His previous series is incredible.
Good to know! I think I will give that a try someday if I love Fire Sacraments!
Whenever I watch any of your videos my to be read list and wishlist swell. It's a good thing 😅.
Hahaha, my TBR always increase, too, everytime I make a video like this. 🤣
1 hr to go in The Autumn War. Can't wait to finish out Price of Spring in a couple of weeks
Ohh nice! The ending of An Autumn War is so good. Enjoy!

It's gotta be Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber, for me. Super influential and amazing quality. I don't even think we'd have DnD without those books, and so you can count all DnD inspired things out. :)
I truly have to give Fritz Leiber's books a try! I rarely hear anyone talk about this series.
