- Kate and Anna McGarrigle are profiled on the CBC's "The Fifth Estate" on April 20, 1977, in a segment narrated by Adrienne Clarkson.
The presentation is amusingly dated in some ways but the segment is interesting because, even though it's very early in their public careers, it lays out quite clearly their attitude toward celebrity that remained largely unchanged from that point on.
There are some nice musical fragments as well as video shots of their family (their mother Gaby, Kate's very young children Rufus and Martha) and friends and collaborators.
The interviewer in the brief radio interview segment at 4:10 is Rick Moranis, at the time a Toronto DJ known as Rick Allan.
I discovered this quaint, lovely act a few years ago and have enjoyed them very much. I like the laid back and unprogrammed style... the combo of French and English... and the sheer beauty and joy of their music. They have stayed true to themselves, and we are so blessed as a result. We miss Kate and wish Anna the best, as the years roll on.
I watch this and it just reminds me of myself and my parents in the 70’s . Beautiful. Their lyrics are superb .si belle
I can't get over how these two allow the criticism without getting defensive. Most artists would get peed off but they take it so well.
Priceless piece of history - thank you so much!
This is wonderful....thank you very much for sharing it with new fans.
So very interesting!! It's great to see this piece of musical history.
The worst thing one could possibly do is take the advice of a critic....and by all accounts they didn't I'm relieved to say.
thanks for uploading this! too bad that there isn't a lot more concert footage or true tv specials on them, especially from canadian tv.
A live record of their early best stuff is long overdue.
That's Rick Moranis interviewing them, when he was known as Rick Allen
Holy cow, you're right. I never noticed that. I'll add a mention of it to the description.
Their style back then was really sexy and edgy and cool and right for their music. They didn't want some sort of generic glitz that would be inferior to their unique sophisticated stylish approach.
That little boy is Rufus Wainwright.
"... washing the dishes which I still do - - - once a week" - hilarious!
What is the first song they sing? I don’t have it in my mix.
Travellin' on for Jezus
