- Susanna Hoffs performs a cover of the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum" at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia 10/4/2012. Linda Ronstadt sang the original a LONG time ago, kids. She looked great in a skirt too. Sorry about the crap-cam picture quality, but the audio makes it all worthwhile, right?
RIP Mike Nesmith 1942-2021. Wonderful song.
😢
He was so underrated.
wow I had no idea he wrote it!
Absolutely.
RIP Nesmith!!! Your legacy lives on….
Linda Ronstadt's original version has that characteristic power that Linda gave it.
Susanna gives it that sweetness of her voice to her version.
I must say that I love both renditions.
If the Bangles in their purest form are pure rock, Susanna in her purest form is pure folk.
Love them.
I saw Mike sing it a month before he died and no other singer could have done it better.
Great song my two favorite female singers
Ronstadt did not do the "original version". But she made it a hit with the Stone Poneys in 1967. The song was written in 1964 by Michael Nesmith, of The Monkees fame. The first recording was by a bluegrass band called The Greenbriar Boys in 1966. The song was for some reason never recorded by The Monkees, although it was performer in one of their tv-shows. Nesmith made his own person on record in 1972.
@@henryrasmussendk correct. Thanks for noting.
She’s a nice singer, but pales in comparison to Ronstadt.
Beautiful tribute to Nez. Rest easy 💔
Beautiful Michael Nesmith song and one of my favorite voices. Thanks for sharing!
RIP
R.I.P..michael nesmith
You would like Joanne too.
Sweet folkie version by Susanna! RIP Mike Nesmith, MFM (MY Favourite Monkee!) - Love and happy hols, the lot on yer!- Jezzie
Nice guitar sound! her voice is distinctive here. Great song indeed by Nesmith, who puts the definition of a noun into the song! Very clever!
Sussana has one of the purest vocal styles of all time.
Susanna is such a beautiful and talented woman. Lovely is the word.
Oh my God She's so adorable 💋💗💋👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🧐
Tremendous performance !!! Great vocal and guitar 🎸!!! Song written for her !!!
RIP Mike. Bought the Linda Rondstadt album just for that track. Didn't realise the masterpiece was yours. 🙏
Great video and a great song. Thanks for sharing
Always love the energy from Susanna - she's a favorite!!!!
I've just discovered this artist recently....I'm no groupy ...but I think she is absolutely incredible.
Great vocals in a real impromptu situation. She is a great singer, very under rated.
Maybe the most beautiful and sweet voice in the world of music.
Yes indeed - very underrated singer!
It is really impossible to judge the "best voice." There are so many, especially when you count Allison Young, Nina Ricci, or any of the Petersen family- the next generation.
Damm i love this girl...shes so awesome...suzanna like as wine
Talent & still gorgeous
Go Susanna
Damn. This place is only 3 blocks from my home. Shame on me for missing out on this show! Maybe next time. She still sounds (and looks) great.
Thanks!! Audio she sounds 👍 great!!!..... Los Angeles checking in....🎼🎵🎶 beautiful song....by L.R.🙂🤗♥️♥️♥️🦉🦉🦉
Michael Nesmith's "Different Drum" recorded by the Stone Poneys and immortalized by Linda Ronstadt
Actually, the Stone Poneys weren't on the original recording, only Linda herself.
2nd recording was them . original was The Greenbriar Boys
But first done by the Greenbriar Boys.
absolutely great rendition,, Susanna Hoffs has such a sweet pretty cute voice and so tight amazing performance.. yes rip Micheal Nesmith
Love her voice....
Definitely no need for apologies about video or anything else. Loved this. Thanks for posting it.
Beautiful...
Love this song....
I love her so much
Beautiful song.
HERMOSO ANGEL EN LA TIERRA SUSANNA HOFFS !!!
So, so, so, so good!
Linda Ronstadt covers this classic song beautifully .
Michael Nesmith was my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I miss him a lot.
Yeah. And so many of his songs are just a little bit strange, witty and loaded with stuff that's easy to miss. For whatever the reason(s), he should have gone from the Monkees to much more success than he achieved.....if that's what he wanted. Maybe he did achieve success under his own terms. I kind of liken him to Frank Zappa in a way.
He is my favorite too.
Her performance is world class... The set up is life music at its purest , the basics are rehearsed but then there's a risqué element where unless the performance is stunning by competent confident musicians it could go belly up ...... It doesn't because her level of performance is so stunning ...
She's like that, loves Music, loves performing , and has such a unique talent she is simply brilliant at what she does,
Deserved much more credit than what she gets ...
I totally agree. I have heard many covers by Susanna, and the Bangles, and her (their) covers always rival the original, and sometimes surpass it.
"Hazy Shade of Winter" with Simon and Garfunkel reached N°13 on Billboard. The Bangles took it to N°2. "If She Knew What She Wants" the original by Jules Shear wasn't that great. The Bangles version is classic. The original demo of "Manic Monday" by Prince for Apollonia 6 didn't satisfy him. He thought the Bangles would do it better. They did. N°2.
"Unconditional Love" by Cyndi Lauper, "The Look of Love" by Dusty Springfield (composed by Bacharach), "To Sir With Love" by Lulu, etc., Susanna's versions are excellent. And I personally prefer Susanna's covers, although many understandably are biased towards the originals.
Sometimes with a skeleton band, Susanna sounds great. As a folk singer she is almost like a jazz musician. Each performance is unique.
I think if the Bangles hadn't separated in 1989, they could have had 5 more years of chart topping success, and Susanna still could have done her solo projects on the side. And the Bangles would still have counted with Michael Steele, a very important cog in the Bangle machinery.
Susanna, and the Bangles, are very underrated, and underappreciated, except by their hardcore fans. We know they're awsome. And many young girl musicians that have openly said that they were inspired by the Bangles.
MY GODDESS BEAUTIFUL !!!
Linda is the gold standard.... but this is silver.
Respectfully disagree. Susanna is platinum.
It’s a pure folk version of the song .
@@ericfreeman5795 Nah! Bronze at the very best.
@@TheTheotherfoot Oh you did not just say what you just said.
If you're here it's because you're watching Susanna. That says a lot.
It's obvious that you are a hardcore Linda fan, and I respect that. I can't stand it when people insinuate that Atomic Kitten's version of "Eternal Flame" is "as good" as the Bangles' original, with all that autotune and artificial flavoring.
But Atomic Kittens introduced a new generation to Susanna's music.
And Susanna and Matthew Sweet, when they recorded "Different Drum", introduced a new generation to Linda Rondstadt.
So I respect your loyalty to Linda, and she deserves it. She's awesome.
But Susanna's still platinum.
Besides, look at those legs!
Can we at least agree that Linda is Platinum, and Susanna is Gold? Either way, I'm loving this song.
Expletive! I miss the Cherry Tree so much.
She was fantastic, Andrew - I think I prefer the stripped-down acoustic "unplugged" version of her show. And thanks, MCedelweiss - it's the one thing my Droidphone does well!
wow..
nice rendition..
Wonderful version
definitely!! thanks
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Superb. 💙 T.E.N.
Yup. She's good.
RIP Michael Nesmith.
I HEARD CARRIE UNDERWOODS SING THIS ICONIC SONG AT LINDA RONSTADT'S
R&R HOF INDUCTION
BUT SUSAN HOFF DID IT ASWELL AS CARRIE ONLY A ACOUSTIC VERSION !!
WOW!
magical
The best legs you will ever see in music
RIP Michael Nesmith
After I got over those legs I realized she had a great voice too. LOL.
great audio by the way!
WOWWWWWWWW
Came for the legs, stayed for the song
i was i was there.
Rip mike
3 dates please
The guitar is bigger than she is. Super talented
Awesome!!! Wish there was a band behind her!
The great Michael Nesmith!
Who else is a fan of The Lemonheads version of it??!
Both are small height women with powerful voices- can sing folk rock and rolls blues bluegrass just needs to do some Mexican songs. Even Karen Carpenter she is awesome
Anyone ever see the Monkeys episode where Michael Nesmith plays this awkwardly, as a prank?
You're right, the quality audio makes up for the crap cam.
Request Linda Ronstadt. Accept no substitutes.
This is amazing to watch but is So Spot On it just sounds like the Real Thing? Just Eddie playing it? Not like a violin at all? I have never one of those instruments?
Really like the musical arrangement on this version. Seems you have to be a pretty brunette to sing this song. :)
Definitely. Blondes need not apply.
Just kidding. Carrie Underwood did a wonderful version at the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Strangely Mike Naismith wrote this sing for the Stone Poneys but never appeared in the video but was prevalent through out his career with the Monkees. Very strange.
long long time ago? 1906?
As sexy of a voice as there is….. no doubt.
Not bad for a stage version with no studio or orchestra.
The guitar is bigger than the girl playing it.
holly s...t
Susanna Hoffs was under appreciated and short lived. Very talented and a nice woman from what I here.
Definitely NOT short-lived man
????????
I think she sounds like Nanci Griffith on this song. Am I crazy?
Yea, it sounds great, but, you know that screens go SIDE-to-SIDE, don't you?!?! Why are you holding your phone camera UPRIGHT???
Don Kirschner turned this tune down when Mike played it for him.
"Linda Ronstadt sang the original a LONG time ago, kids."
No she didn't It was written in 1964 by Mike Nesmith, first recorded in 1966 by a band no one's ever heard of, then became popular in 1967 by Ronstadt.
Damn, what's with this Common Core generation, and "alternative facts?"
Yes she did. She sang it while a member of the Stone Poneys. It was written by Nesmith but recorded FIRST by the Greenbriar Boys, who must be the "band no one's ever heard of" according to you. BTW If you're looking for facts, try Wikipedia, not UA-cam.
Susanna has been using Suzanne Sommers thigh master! Notice the inner thigh muscles?!
lol,i know what ya sayin, and i agree,it'd be too much for most ppl to comprehend that, hes not who they think she is
This is Linda's song. A very vannilla verson here. Nice try, but no gold ring.
Ronstadt's version is good but overproduced. Even her amazing voice barely reaches over the "wall of sound"
linda ronstadt she isnt
Nope.
