Let’s talk about Garment Steamers today and if it is really useful for YOU or not.
    How it works
Press Iron Uses pressure and heat from the iron to make sure you get a good pressed finish
Garment Steamer- Uses steam from the steamer to loosen fabric and smoothen out creases from the clothes. It is more gentle on clothes.
    Type of fabrics
Press Iron - Heavy fabrics like linen, wool, denim, cotton and their blends are ideal to use in a pressure iron
Garment Steamer- Delicate fabrics like synthetic, wool, silk, Indian outfits with lot of intricate work on them, velvet, t shirts with prints
Thicker fabrics can be done, but will take more time
    Best for
Press Iron - Getting sharp crease / stiff iron on heavy clothes
    Gives more control and precision
Garment Steamer- Smoothening out creases, between uses, delicate clothes
    Storage
Press Iron - More space for iron, it’s accessories like starch, iron board and so on
Garment Steamer- Less space for a hand held garment steamer, more space required for an upright garment steamer
    Travel use
Press Iron - Possible - you also get travel irons now
Garment Steamer- Handheld - possible Upright - not possible
    Cons
Press Iron - Greater risk of burning - can’t count how many times I’ve burnt a printed t shirt with this!
Garment Steamer- Not able to give a sharp crease or stiff finish
My opinion is that we definitely need a regular iron for heavy fabrics - like cotton, heavy wool, denim, linen and so on. A garment steamer can be used in addition if:
You have to iron delicate fabrics on a regular basis - such as silk, outfits with intricate work, synthetic
You want to give touch ups between uses or touchup after a round of regular iron is done (because it can get creased after that as well) - yes can be done using a regular iron too but can be a bit more cumbersome
You need a handy travel iron - although you do get regular pressure irons in the travel form too these days.
So if you have now decided you need a garment steamer - there are two options available:
    A professional upright garment steamer
    A handheld portable garment steamer
    Ease of use
Upright garment steamer - Easier and lighter to use as the water container is not hand held
Handheld garment steamer- Easy to use but since water container is in the hand - can get heavy
    of clothes in one refill
Upright garment steamer - Water tank capacity can be upwards of 1 liter. So it can iron 10-15 clothes in one shot depending on type of clothes and level of creasing
Handheld garment steamer- Water tank capacity is less than 300 ml. So it can handle 3-4 clothes in one shot depending on type of clothes and level of creasing
    Flexibility
Upright garment steamer - High - more steam settings for different types of fabrics
Handheld garment steamer- Low - 1 - 2 steam settings only
    Wattage
Upright garment steamer - Higher - upwards of 1500W - so can be used for a bit more heavy duty ironing
Handheld garment steamer- Generally between 1000 - 1500W. Higher the better.
    Storage
Upright garment steamer - More space to store
Handheld garment steamer- Portable and takes less space
    Travel use
Upright garment steamer - Not possible
    Handheld garment steamer- possible
