I pretty much agree with everything, but...NZ is expensive, but with fresh food it pays to eat seasonally. Growers raise tomatoes all year round, but this often requires heated glass houses, which makes them expensive. Eat fresh tomatoes in summer when they are maybe $2.50 a kilo, and use tinned ones in winter. Houses are expensive, but Auckland is super expensive. You can buy a real up-market house in Dunedin for the average Auckland cost. Good news for buyers is how house prices are trending down in some places.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. We should have included prices of milk, cheese, non perishables to illustrate our example more clearly (with a comparison to the cost of the same products overseas), but totally agree eating seasonally is the way to go ☺️ Dunedin is such a great city!
Wowwww I had no idea the costs had gotten this bad and I've only been away from NZ for a year! Agree about all the pro's though! Such an amazing place to live and raise kids!
My ultimate goal in life is to return to New Zealand some day full time.. I was born and raised in Canada and lived in NZ for a year in 2015-2016 and fell in love. The scenery and weather absolutely cannot be beaten. Where NZ falls short in my opinion is the cost of living. If you're someone with ALOT of money/savings or are highly educated then NZ is a no brainer. However if you're an average Joe it's really hard to justify the move. Coming from Canada In my time there I found I gave up ALOT when it came to consumables and quality of life. I could afford a lot more in the sense of a home / car / clothes etc in my country Canada. Things cost literally double in NZ and the wages are probably half.
Hi Jared, Canada is a bucket list destination for us! We definitely hope to visit in the future. People say it has a lot in common with NZ - would you agree? I think everything you’ve said is spot on, the cost of living is getting worse and worse and so many people (even those earning above average) are finding things tough right now. Thank you so much for watching, and for your comment, we appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
@@goodforgaia I would agree that Canada and New Zealand are very similar. People are friendly in both places. New Zealand definitely wins in the weather category. Both have a lot of beautiful places but where Canada's so large it's a little more spread out. New Zealand is really great if you're young on a working holiday just living it up not thinking about the future too much but there's definitely a lot more opportunities in Canada. Something as simple as going out for a meal with friends is a lot less stressful in Canada. Materialistic items aren't everything but it's definitely nice to get what you want and not worry about it.
This what you get from living in Auckland. Petrol price else where in NZ can be as low as $2.55 per litre, and dropping constantly I believe Auckland has an a additional tax on theirs. The reason for so many wood houses is that wood flex's with Earthquakes where as Brick houses tends to crumble. True some of the older houses can be damp but newer builds have overcome this problem, last time I checked the damp house ratio is about 3 to 5% Price of grocery's is often seasonable, tomatoes in summer can be as low as $1.99 a KG. Cucumbers as low as $1. As for the great outdoors you forgot to mention the Beaches. NZ has more coastline than mainland USA and 1000's of beaches, very easy to have an entire beach to yourself here.
Great video. I'm considering a move to New Zealand for a fresh start, it looks beautiful. I love the outdoors and I kind of like how isolated the country is, as strange as that might seem. How accepting are the locals of English people? ( I know some Aussies aren't big fans of the English lol). Thanks.
Hi Mikey, thanks for watching and commenting! I (Renata) am from NZ, but Josh is from England and he has had only positive experiences moving to NZ. He joined a few Facebook groups (Brits in NZ etc) before we moved, but he made friends by joining sports teams (football and basketball), and also through his work. It is a really beautiful place and if you like the outdoors then you will absolutely love NZ!
Thanks for sharing all of this, I realize there are some considerable cons but I think pros far outweigh them! I'm making plans to relocate and New Zealand is at the top of the list right now!

Its not "Free" healthcare. We pay for it in heavy taxes. Not to mention, you still have to pay to go to a GP Doctor. Our healthcare system is also in massive disarray and is a lot more inefficient than it used to be. My grandfather also had to wait 9 months for knee surgery. So yea its nice to be able to go to the hospital when you need and not have to worry about the price, but we definitely pay for it in other ways.

Hi. I am in the UK, thinking of relocating to NZ. How is making friends over there? I'd be on my own and would be dependent on making new friends. Thank you! :-).
How exciting! I would say making friends depends a lot on your personality and the effort you put in - but in my opinion it is harder in NZ than the UK. I found people were much keener to go to the pub after work (in London), and more open to making friends. I would say It also depends on what kind of job you have - is it working from home or an office, is it a social company, etc. We also made friends through having a baby - I joined a coffee group, and made an effort to talk to parents at the park, and went to different playgroups, and Josh joined social sports teams (football and basketball). There are also loads of Facebook groups you can join to meet people (that’s how I found my coffee group). I hope this helps a bit? It does take time to make friends, but it’s a great country and people are really friendly, so we think it’s worth it ☺️

How much it costs in London, Los Angeles, new York and Sydney? Also the size of house and quality of house..is it same when we compare 2 houses in 2 different cities? Same goes for food. 6$ per kg of cucumber in auckland. How much does it cost in London? In short, Overall on cost of living index, is Auckland more expensive than London? This needs to be analyzed before concluding too expensive or not
Hello, thanks for commenting. Our personal experience is that Auckland is more expensive than London. We have lived in both cities, and bought property in both, and we noticed a huge difference when we moved back to Auckland. There is a lot more competition between supermarkets in the UK, and NZ just doesn’t have that so prices are very high. Here are some comparisons you can look at for overall cost of living in 2022 - all show NZ is more expensive than the UK: worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/cost-of-living-by-country www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings_by_country.jsp www.worlddata.info/cost-of-living.php I hope this helps, again we are only talking about our personal experience after having lived in London and now living in Auckland.
Can we be good friends?
Dunedin ?
Why not live on the Antartic ?
Wowwww I had no idea the costs had gotten this bad and I've only been away from NZ for a year! Agree about all the pro's though! Such an amazing place to live and raise kids!

Hello, thanks so much for watching! Glad you loved NZ, we think it’s pretty special ☺️

Nice to see Hobsonville point in the Video
It’s a great new community! Prices have sky rocketed since the first house were built though.

I lived in Auckland for 5 years and then moved back to Australia. Nice place but wages are much, much better in Australia.
my sister told me about the cost of living there but she still loves NZ! ! great country
True some of the older houses can be damp but newer builds have overcome this problem, last time I checked the damp house ratio is about 3 to 5%
Price of grocery's is often seasonable, tomatoes in summer can be as low as $1.99 a KG. Cucumbers as low as $1.
As for the great outdoors you forgot to mention the Beaches. NZ has more coastline than mainland USA and 1000's of beaches, very easy to have an entire beach to yourself here.
Great point about the beaches - we spend a lot of time outdoors so its definitely a great benefit!

I love Aotearoa, NZ, great video!
We love it too 🥰 thanks for watching!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Great video.
Same here. I made the terrible mistake and moved from safe Switzerland to dangerous, crazy USA a few years ago. And also I have on top of my list to relocate to New Zealand.

Nice vidéo ! It will help me thank you ! I hear everywhere that Auckland is expensive but thanks to your vidéos, I can see price are quite similar to France. It depends of the product.
I am looking on 2 supermarkets online shop in Paris and we have
- cucumber : 2.13 $ or 1.69$ for 1 cucumber
- "paris " mushroom : 6$ or 7.45$ / kg
- tomatoes : 4.25$/kg (here tomatoes are quite cheap because we have a lot)
- avocato : 2.70$ each or 1.60$ each or 4.25$ for 2
- sweet potatoe : 3.10 $ or 2.77$/ kg
- diesel : 1.92$
- gazoline : 2.05$
- soja milk : 1$ to 3$ for 1L
- 3 bedrooms (F4) : average 2650$/month for around 80/90m²

Stocks extended their year-to-date rally following the CPI report, with the S&P 500 last up 0.8% in afternoon trading. but I don't know if stocks will quickly rebound for a few weeks, .I am under pressure to grow my reserve of $250k.
Concentrate on two main objectives. First, keep yourself safe by knowing when to sell stocks in order to limit losses and maximize gains. Second, get ready to benefit from market changes. I advise consulting a professional for advice.

Yes of course, there’s always ways to save money in different areas of your life, in any city in the world.
Hi Colin, thanks for commenting. Our healthcare isn’t perfect but we think it’s great and this video is just our personal pros and cons ☺️ definitely agree that it’s under funded though!
But did you get a $50,000 bill like in usa...?? No... plus our taxes are the same or less than usa n uk
@@gissyb1 so true! I have friends who gave birth overseas and had to pay $10k-20k + just to do so in a hospital, meanwhile I had the best midwife and hospital experience and didn't pay a thing (other than taxes as mentioned). We feel so lucky to live in a country like NZ 🙂
Yea its pretty bad. People think it's good because they compare it to the US. Its sad they have no idea what it actually looks like in countries with a proper Healthcare system.

Where can you recommend in Auckland for families? I have a 12 year old girl and 8 year old boy. Somewhere that is family friendly and safe but not completely unaffordable. Good commute into Auckland City? Thank you 🙏 I’m also from UK.
Hi Nicola, how exciting that you’re moving here! We love the North Shore because of the beaches and access to the city, and there are loads of great suburbs there. We also love lots of places in West Auckland like Hobsonville Point, West Harbour, Titirangi, Waimauku. I’m not sure what the central suburbs would cost for rentals but Grey Lynn/Ponsonby is really nice as well. If you didn’t mind a further drive then Millwater/Milldale/Silverdale/Orewa are all nice areas with lots of new houses 😊 hope that helps!
Good luck everywhere in NZ is expensive to live
So it's cheaper than USA?
Visited my brother's in Auckland in January 2023. It was a good month holiday. I guess all countries has its drawbacks. We can't have it all😂 nope not a cheap place to live....true true... fortunately my brothers are very good cooks. It's cheaper to cook food at home and much more enjoyable. The only time we ate out was to celebrate a birthday otherwise we made our own picnic baskets. People are friendly period. Love New Zealand forever. My new home from home
I'm so glad you had a great time! We love living here and I totally agree, no place is "perfect" (plus that means something different to all of us). Hope you get to visit again soon 😀

*Well, she's undoubtedly a Kiwi - she said "definly" within the first five seconds of the video. Kiwis seem to have a knack for dropping entire syllables out of words. 1520 USD a month for a 3 bedroom house in Auckland?? Thats so much less than my small college town in the western US what the hell 😭
I mean I get it accounts for the low salaries in NZ but were not exactly making six figures here
Americans earn more, NZ's rental prices are still pretty high.
Americans do not earn much, income is drastically warped by the 1%. The average wage is poverty wage.
hii, can i ask? :) as someone who has never went to new zealand, i really want to live and work there. do you have any city recommendations for someone who want to be an early childhood teacher? thank you so much!
Hello! I’d recommend joining some Facebook groups about moving to NZ and asking there. ECE teachers are typically very underpaid (and undervalued) in NZ, so I would suggest a cheaper city like Christchurch or Dunedin (but I’m no expert I’m sorry!).
very cute couple, thank for vid

TWO BUCKS FOR GAS?? and our soy milk is eight dollars on avg in the US😭
The food ? Yeah very expensive, the gas though ? 😭 it’s $3.80 a gallon in Indianapolis right now but sometimes it’s even more than that

1.2 million NZD for an average house in Auckland.
Here are some comparisons you can look at for overall cost of living in 2022 - all show NZ is more expensive than the UK:
