Tbh that Alien reveal was more scary than seeing the chestburster in Alien, or even the Xenomorph, especially back in the days themovie was released. Anyone who tells you this is a film about aliens missed the point of the film. It's about faith, those who believe in religion, and those who don't. I agree, the dinner scene was very touching. Such raw emotion, it's hard not to feel for them in that scene.
Love them going off about the Birthday scene. I remember being around 12 seeing this in a packed theater when it came out and everyone laughed when Joaquin said "Move children! Vamanos!" but when the alien finally walked from behind the bush everyone went NUTS. This remains my favorite M. Night movie to this day.
Bo thought the water she was drinking was contaminated so she left it all around the room. The boy had asthma so no poison got into his lungs and Merrill held the baseball record for longest hit so the signs were all around and the wife saw it as she was dying. Mel finally saw it at the end. Good movie. You both saw the signs!
Even with the nitpick flaws you can make about the aliens, you have to give M. Night Shamalayan credit. He managed to write an original script that merged two very different kinds of movies: a paranormal thriller that interrupts a family drama that talks about loss, faith and the debate between coincidence and acts of the divine. It is about as close to blockbuster status as a faith-based movie will get in modern cinema.
My uncle died in an accident similar to his wife earlier this winter. Swap the car pinning her to a tree with my uncle's entire engine block sitting in his lap. They knew it being where it was was the o ly thing keeping him alive and as soon as they moved it he was dead. He knew it too. He was awake, and everything. Was talking to the first responders, told them his name, his address. They called his wife there so they could say goodbye. It was eerie how similar it was to this movie
Chris Stuckmann pointed out the best symbolisms in the movie where Morgan is trying to get a good signal on top of the car. In the moment that they're all holding hands while hes on top of the car, the signal is clear. Same thing at their last dinner. They come together and embrace and the baby monitor goes off again. Its a sign, saying that they'll only be getting through this together. The big shyamalan twist is that this wasnt a horror thriller about alien invasion but about family and faith.
This was the first alien film that actually scared me, and made me feel how real, personal, and terrifying an actual alien invasion would really be. I know a few other films tried this same approach, but this is the first film that actually made me scared of an alien invasion.
honestly all the other scifi movies felt to unrealistic altleast from the ones I can remember watching as a kid, this movie felt realistic and it reminded me so much of the alien vids id see on youtube back then so I loved it automatically
At the dinner table the son says to his father "I hate you" for not getting what he wants. Later in the cellar when the son seems to be dying from his asthma attack the father says to his Father "I hate you". Then the father says to his son "Don't be afraid of what's happening. BELIEVE it's going to pass." SYMBOLISM!!!!!!!!!
Another little thing I see not a lot of people pick up on, the signal through the baby monitor is strongest when they are together. They are all climbing on the car, the boy on top, the uncle holding him, the dad is holding the girl, and as soon as the uncle reaches out and grabs them, the signal is clear. Then again, later at the dinner, they all hug, and it becomes clear again
all reactors leave out the mother saying " tell Bo to listen to her brother...he will always look out for her....she did listen when he told her not to run when Houdini was going to attack and he did look out for her...
Whenever they all touch the signal becomes more clear which is a metaphor for them needing to fight together. Also another great small detail is that when the dog pee’s itself the dad says he’ll call the doctor for help rather than the vet because he doesn’t want to see the vet who killed his wife in his car by accident. Loads of great little things in this film like that. Also of course the wife’s last words, the picture of the farmhouse, bo’s oddness around water leading to there being lots of water glasses around the house, the sons inhaler , the brother’s baseball history and bat are all signs that help them defeat their enemy.
This was one of the first movies I ever had nightmares about as a kid. We had a farm and I would always look down the lane expecting to see a dark figure like the one on the roof 😂
I’m not sure if you guys caught this, but the little girl is the little sister from Zombieland, and the son is makauley kulkins brother. Definitely a banger of a cast
My parents pulled me out of school when I was 12 to see this. I vividly remember sitting in the theater when the alien was revealed. The whole place collectively lost their shit. It was a cannon moment in my life. 💕
The stories of the two children's births are actually the stories of M. Night Shyamalans own children's births. The whole basement scene was so well filmed and acted. You guys should check out Split next, one his better films in my opinion!

You guys are hilarious! Despite the arguing, I can tell how strong your relationship is that you can laugh about it later. Signs scared the hell out of me when I saw it the first time, and Mel and Joaquin were great! Thanks!
Saw this at the theater when it came out. F'ing right about goosebumps at the alien reveal video on the newscast. That shit rocked me. Excellent filmmaking.
Ugh I’m loving this reaction. I grew up with this movie, my mom always had it on and it never got old. I always love seeing people’s reactions to the first sighting.
Ur “I spat in her face” just cracked me up. And I love Hannah she’s amazing and I think you two r perfect together. But u saying “I spat in her face” was the funniest thing I’ve heard from you. And I’ve been watching u guys forever. LOVE BOTH OF YOU!!!! Please never give up ur reactions. ❤️❤️❤️
I watched this in theaters, not witnessing any preview or knowledge of Shyamalan....and it blew me away. I wasn't expecting a twist, nor aliens...perfect way to witness it.
The first time we meet Meryls son in the cornfield Ashes response “send this kid off to an orphanage” honestly made me spit out my tea I could not stop laughing.
I love how Ash in the beginning of the movie wanted to send the kid to an asylum and 20 minutes later he said I love this kid he’s holding the family together….🤣👍
I lived next to a corn field. That made this movie 200% scarier for me when I watch it at 14. Because me and my cousins used to play hide and seek and is super easy to see from the crops but not what is inside the crops.
They live on a farm (in the US) such dogs are usually outside, and usually prefer to be outside. You get used to thinking it normal for them to be outside, and it doesn't occur to you to bring them in.
I think you both would love the movie, FREQUENCY, with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. Beautiful story, suspenseful as hell! Another fantastic movie with Jim Caviezel is "THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO", a great revenge movie.
The mother was psychic. Her daughter inherited that ability; Bo has dreams that come true. Bo also had a psychic 'conversation' with her mother when she was born. And the mother knew all her life what Morgan would look like. Being a 'sensitive', the mother took walks alone in the stillness of the evening. But this one night, Ray Ready somehow fell asleep at the wheel and ran his vehicle into the mother, pinning her to the tree. From that vantage point at the end of her life, she was able to see the coming invasion and was able to give last advice to make a good life for her family, including living through the short alien invasion. But look at the other signs, ones besides the mother being psychic and Ray falling asleep. Morgan had asthma, so his lungs were closed enough that he couldn't breathe in enough of the poison gas to kill him. Bo always had this weirdness about the taste of water, so there were glasses full all over. And Merrill always felt it was wrong not to swing his bat, giving it every bit of his strength. All this (and the love the family had for each other) allowed them to survive. Children mirror those around them. When Morgan looked to Merrill and wished he was his dad, it showed how much Morgan had lost faith in his father. When he told his father at the kitchen table he hated him, he was expressing his loss of faith in his father. Morgan blamed his father for his mother's death because ESPECIALLY being a minister, his father must have done something wrong or God would have kept his mother safe and alive. Morgan was mirroring his father. Just as Morgan was angry at his dad and blamed him for his mother's death, his father was angry at God and blamed Him for his wife's death. (Hey, Ash: SYMBOLISM!) The actor who played Ray Ready was the film's director and author, M Night Shyamalan. He always plays a small part in all his films. This film was shot in Pennsylvania; it's because he lives in Pennsylvania, and he likes being able to go home every night to be with his family. I think you watched "The Sixth Sense", another Shyamalan film. It's set and shot in Philadelphia, a city in Pennsylvania. In that film, he played the part of the ER doctor who called in a social worker to talk to Cole's mother (and assess whether she has been abusing him). A Not-Fun Fact: The first day of filming was on September 11, 2001. That's the day of the attack on New York City's Twin Towers, which fell that day. Terrorists attacked the US by hijacking four airplanes, two sent to the Twin Towsers, two sent to Washington, DC, where one crashed into the side of the Pentagon. The last plane was meant to crash into either the White House (killing the President) or the Capitol Building (killing Congress). Instead, the passengers on that plane recognized they were going to die no matter what happened, so they rushed the terrorists flying the plane and caused it to crash in an empty field...in Pennsylvania. This event traumatized every American, but especially those in New York City and, to a lesser extent, those in DC and near the Pennsylvania crash site. I am absolutely certain this set a tone that you can read from the acting in this film.
Great analysis. I never was a thought that the mother was psychic. Still actually not completely convinced but I think it’s a great take. It’s interesting what you said about September 11 affecting the tone of the shoot. Also interesting how the movie deals with the aliens and how we also were dealing with prejudice against political aliens.
I don’t think she was psychic, it was god speaking through her. And with Bo, she was having visions like a prophet. The movie LITERALLY has to do with faith
@@Aether_Rxse How do you think God speaks to us? God is spirit; psychic communication is through spirit. There's a reason people with psychic ability are referred to as 'sensitives'; they see past theh physical to the spirit in all life. You are welcome to believe what you wish; according to the definitions that make sense to me, she was psychic. Neither you nor I can do more than offer an opinion, not a fact. Kind of what constitutes, what defines, 'faith'.
ok before i watch this, i'll write what actually happens and see if Ash or Hannah realise it. Firstly - ITS NOT ALIENS. aliens wear suits. we travel in space we wear suits. Because SPACE and other planets = DANGERS They are depicted as aliens, because M.Night couldn't get funding for the film he wanted to make. a films about Religion and Demons. So he created one anyway and masked it as alien invasion. this whole film is about faith, and a loss of faith for Mel Gibson character. after his wife died. but then he regains his faith. there is a portal - the creatures (DEMONS) come through it, they abduct humans, they are NOT simply alergic to water. they are alergic to HOLY WATER. they were defeated in the middle east because the the religious connotations for that region, ALL water sources are holy. the girl when born didn't cry. they said she was like an angle. when she drinks the water she inadvertintly blesses it. its holy. Signs, the mother sees the impending doom, and tries to warn Gibsons character. Meryl said it always felt wrong not to swing. because in this film. Destiny exists, do you think everything is random or are you the kind of person who sees signs. The demons are defeated. and Mel regains his faith in god. AGAIN - not aliens. they are demons mistaken by humanity for aliens
Alien movies scare me more than any ghost or slasher movie. When I watched this in the theater back in the day, my heart skipped a beat when the alien steps out of the shrubs into the alley. 😂

I saw Signs the night it came out in a sold-out theater. We were some of the last ones to file in and ended up sitting in the front row. The scares were SO intense, especially that close up, and the audience was super invested and reactive. It was an absolute blast. It remains one of the most fun movie experiences I’ve ever had.
This truly is an amazing movie and one of my absolute favorites. People go into this movie expecting an alien/action movie and it is not that at all. The use of the aliens to tell a story of a broken families journey of healing and rediscovering faith is brilliant. The tension and suspense in this movie was very much like what you would find in a film by the master of suspense, the late Alfred Hitchcock.
If you pick it apart as pure sci fi, it seems like it fails on some levels, but if you look at it how its really intended, a movie about faith, its SO very effective. Its also one of the best movies I have seen in dealing with family loss in a convincing family unit.
It works on sci-fi, too. nothing about it fails on sci-fi levels. Those old arguments are about as uncreative and simple-minded as "why didn't they fly to mordor."
@@fiveoctaves Right because us having the technology to fly into outer space means we can also phase through solid objects. Just because they can travel through space doesn't mean they can do anything they want; they're no omnipotent beings. Mor0n, even if they have the technology to phase through solid objects, doesn't mean they always have the technology carried on every individual one of them. In fact, if they're spreading due to over population, they'd be less worried about the value of individuals and probably equip them less. Believe it or not, not evey advanced tech has to have a dashboard of christmas lights and colored beams of pew pew and translocation technology. A solid wood door with a solid lock and barring can keep in a modern human just as easily as a neanderthal (a gulf of difference in tech levels), but suddenly it makes no sense in their case. Believe it or not, walls, doors, and barriers work and will continue to work for a loooooooooong time, and having vehicles that can fly in space doesn't change that fact. Idiyots being so self assure in their image of sci-fi cookie cutter tropes.
@@unclebounce1495 the problem with it isn't that they invaded a planet that is 70% water when it is harmful to them. As others have said, they may have been desperately seeking another planet. The problem, is that these beings are intelligent enough to be able to cross the galaxy, something that we are probably thousands of years off being able to do, and yet they aren't intelligent enough to scan the planet, understand its chemical composition, and then wear appropriate suits to shield themselves from the water. Instead they come down naked. I know, wearing any sort of protective clothing would mean they can't use their camouflage. But hell they could have attacked from the skies in their invisible ships. I do like the film, but it would have worked much better if M.Night could have managed to write them as demons, since it is about faith and the water being harmful to them could be construed as holy water. I also do agree with people's criticism of them not being able to break through a door. When Merrill faces it with the baseball bat it is towering over him and takes a hard blow to the back without being dropped. It should have no problem punching its way through a door. And even if not, they are intelligent enough to traverse the galaxy, it should have been intelligent enough to use something in the room to escape. Like I said, I do like the film, and I love that scene for the jump scare which is legitimately scary and comes out of nowhere. But it does have a couple of problems. I overlook them personally but I understand people's gripes with it.

😂 Hannah talking about the aliens thick and healthy nails is ENOUGH 😂😭😂 you two are seriously the most hilarious people on this planet, oh my god!
The big shyamalan twist is that this wasnt a horror thriller about alien invasion but about family and faith.
ayy chris stuckman shoutout
His video about this was great
its not an alien invasion
@prettymuchit I seen that one
That's because its a demon represented in alien form. The pure malice and hatred in its eyes, the water being its weakness. The signs are there lol
@@rockymontanagarciamane how is independence day unrealistic?
Is that a real question? 😂 You watch too many invasion movies. @@JasonKreider-eq8kp
Cause the whole movie was focus on the perspective of one family. Not knowing what to do while the world is crumbling down is a terrifying thought
At the dinner table the son says to his father "I hate you" for not getting what he wants.
Later in the cellar when the son seems to be dying from his asthma attack the father says to his Father "I hate you".
Then the father says to his son "Don't be afraid of what's happening. BELIEVE it's going to pass."
SYMBOLISM!!!!!!!!!
Another little thing I see not a lot of people pick up on, the signal through the baby monitor is strongest when they are together. They are all climbing on the car, the boy on top, the uncle holding him, the dad is holding the girl, and as soon as the uncle reaches out and grabs them, the signal is clear. Then again, later at the dinner, they all hug, and it becomes clear again
never noticed that. thanks
Humans are amplifiers/conductors so it works both metaphorically and physically
all reactors leave out the mother saying " tell Bo to listen to her brother...he will always look out for her....she did listen when he told her not to run when Houdini was going to attack and he did look out for her...
I'd never realized that either...one of those movies where you find something new each time you watch...
I did notice that....did not know if anyone else had...

Hannah is a saint, cause what???? Ash better give her the biggest bouquet of flowers as apology! Great reaction, though!
Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin 🙃
(The Culkins are all powerhouse actors; I'd die happy if these two watched Succession!!)
I don't think this movie could have been this good with any of the actors replaced. Especially the kids.

Saw this at the theater when it came out. F'ing right about goosebumps at the alien reveal video on the newscast. That shit rocked me. Excellent filmmaking.
the scene where the alien walks by during the birthday party scared the hell out of me as a kid, that shit was so real back then.
That news footage scene has haunted me since CHILDHOOD when I first saw this film!

I watched this in theaters, not witnessing any preview or knowledge of Shyamalan....and it blew me away. I wasn't expecting a twist, nor aliens...perfect way to witness it.
The party footage scene was a trip in cinemas! M night knocked this one out of the park... pun intended ;)
Spitting in that aliens eye would have probably killed it.
Ash for king. The spitting king! Save us oh king

Omg the opening convo 😂 I love this movie. Great reaction as always.
I think you both would love the movie, FREQUENCY, with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. Beautiful story, suspenseful as hell! Another fantastic movie with Jim Caviezel is "THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO", a great revenge movie.

I love The Count of Monte Cristo x
Frequency one of my favorite movies...
(Hey, Ash: SYMBOLISM!)
The actor who played Ray Ready was the film's director and author, M Night Shyamalan.
A Not-Fun Fact:
The first day of filming was on September 11, 2001.
Because SPACE and other planets = DANGERS
They are depicted as aliens, because M.Night couldn't get funding for the film he wanted to make. a films about Religion and Demons.
Not for nothing but I'd move the hell away from that house.. I don't have enough Faith in that cornfield 😂

The Village is my fave M Night movie. Like you said, it's so misunderstood. I partly blame the advertising. It's such a beautiful piece of art and the score is amazing. Not to mention the stellar cast.
100% my favorite Shyamalan film.
The plot twist in "the village" pulls the rug out from under you. It's like pushing a rest button. I was disappointed.

The symbolism behind this movie comes from the themes of faith, family, and healing juxtaposed with an alien invasion.
They are not aliens..

Or demon invasion 🧐
not Aliens. DEMONS
@@liamscott1905 Thank you. no one seems to get this is not an Alien invasion. its Demon invasion and is all about Demons and religion and faith
I showed my mum this movie one time and she refuses to ever watch it again, that scene when the alien walks out the bush scared the hell out of her
I saw Signs the night it came out in a sold-out theater.
The double take from Hannah at Ash' "sin all over my face." 😂
In case you missed it, that was the director M.Night Shamyalan playing the man who accidentally killed the wife.
He also directed The Sixth Sense.
@@unclebounce1495 It only doesn't fail if you accept that the aliens have less intelligence than the doors they can't open.
@fiveoctaves apposable thumbs is what they lack and our entire culture is based upon it. Different natural selection processes on diff planets
