    *DATA* 😅 A great example of how the better you get at English, the more you notice how people don't care about the rules! *Nice topic!*

      Thank you!
      Yes, if a grammatical rule is broken by enough native speakers, then the 'mistake' becomes acceptable. 'data' is a great example of this.

    the police has just issued a statement => police as a unit , it's correct.
    the police have just issued a statement => police as individuals, it's correct too.

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  4 роки тому +1

      Although this logic may apply to other collective nouns, I'm afraid it doesn't to 'police'. 'police' is always treated as a plural noun.

    There is any difference between
    A dozen of oranges
    A dozen oranges----

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  6 років тому

      A dozen oranges (no 'of') is the correct expression.
      If you think of each individual orange, then the verb is plural: A dozen oranges are eaten by my family every day.
      If you think of the whole group, then the verb is singular: A dozen oranges is cheaper than a dozen apples.

    • @ranjithk2936
      @ranjithk2936 6 років тому

      But mam in this qn why a dozen of oranges is not taken as a unit

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  6 років тому

      Because each orange is eaten separately.
      If the distinction between 'individual' or 'whole' is not obvious and open to interpretation, you can use either a singular or a plural verb.

      @AngloLinkEnglish  3 роки тому

      You can use both 'is' and 'are' depending on the context:
      10 days is a long time (uncountable).
      In your context, I'd use 'are' because you're not following with an uncountable noun.

      You can use both depending on the verb. If you're referring to the action of each individual member of the committee, you should use 'are', which I think would be more suitable for the action of 'meeting'.

      Hello Anjali,
      When you put an 's' after a noun, it becomes plural: brother >> brothers.
      With verbs, it's the opposite: There is an 's' after the verb with 'he', 'she' & 'it: My bother (he) approves / My brothers (they) approve.
