my mother nancee,, she was part of a group out of the riverside/redlands/San berdoo,,, click of "GREASERS" back then.. including,, Mickey Thompson,, Dan gurney,,Joe horvath,, pernelli Jones,,my mom,, and a few others..when they were all around 18-22 ,, one night, , they were all out cruzing their hot rods,, and my mom was a top coleigeic swimmer,, they came up with a plan to have my mom SWIM out to a little island with 3 -50ft. palm trees on it at the "FAIRMONT PARK" AMUSEMENT PARK LAKE WHICH SURROUNDED THE PLACE... she swam out to it with a 2gal. gas can and lit it on fire,,, and while swimming back to get in one of the "boys" hot rod and speed off to mount rubadoe and watch the palm trees burn,, they "the boys" all took off becuz they heard the sirens, and cops were coming... only DAN GURNEY TURNED AROUND AND PICKED UP MY MOM AT LAST MINUTE AND WRAPPED HIS ARMS AROUND HER AND STARTED MAKING OUT WITH HER... OROBLEM 2AS SHE WAS GOING OUT WITH ONE OF THE "other boys" ... and when the cops pulled up to them and saw they were making out,, they obviously did not suspect them of anyrhing,, it was probably the pack of hot rods speeding up mount rubadoe... and that's my fan gurney story for all to enjoy... not only was Dan a great racer,, but a true gentleman as well... Godspeed dan...nancee's son, DON...oh ps.. dan,,, I became a racer myself for 35 yrs and followed your racing career also...
Me too. I had seats in the stands at turn 6. Remember Petty driving STRAIGHT through the esses? The next year he figured out how to drive the esses and WON the race. It was after the '68 race, at Riverside, that Petty won 10 in a row.
Gurney's co-driver, Junior Johnson, lost his engine entering turn 6 and hit the wall. I was standing next to the wall at the exact point of impact. If the chain-link fencing hadn't been above the wooden wall, I could have shaken hands with Junior.

Why the 3 numbers on the doors?
Back then nascar allowed 3 digits numbers for cars. There used to be 300s and x numbered cars
He was one hell of a driver and champion

Bring them back! There are enough remanufactured replacement parts to have a fully supported classic stock car circuit.
Those cars without those drivers would not be entertaining.

Dan Gurney for presedente? I would have suggested Ned Jarrett instead. Nedmug would look great on an $11 bill
