Great video as always, Grady! One independent artist I would suggest is Sam Outlaw. According to his social media he finished recording a new album in March and is set to announce a release date soon. He’s got a great voice, uses steel in his sound, and writes some pretty excellent songs. His best three songs, in my opinion, are Ghost Town, Trouble, and Country Love Song.
Feedback: when you refer to another video (i.e. the Avengers one) it would be great if you could link to it (either in-video or in comments). Not only is this a great service to your viewers it also helps the UA-cam-algorithm quickly figure out that that video is a good follow up video to recommend to viewers of the video (after enough ppl click the link). In this case it seems enough people looked it up manually to make it show up, but it's still pretty far down the recommended list.
Benjamin Tod of lost dog street band. He's been around forever but I'm not sure he gets the credit he deserves as a songwriter Edit :Well this is the most attention any of my comments has gotten. So I'll go ahead and ask y'all to give me some feedback on my songs if y'all want... Worth a try lol
Yes! He's not only a wonderful lyricist, but he has (and kind of still is) living the life he sings about. It brings a harsh but beautiful authenticity to his music. More people need to hear his music.
I think a lot of people fail to realize just how incredibly talented Bill Strings is. He is not only a great player.. but his writing is a once in a generation kind of creativity.
It seems like he spitefully ignores him because Ben's fans have been pestering him to acknowledge Benjamin Tod/Lost Dog forever now. He replied to one of my comments paraphrasing slightly "they're niche aren't they?" I don't remember exactly what he said but it's like "idk dude decide for yourself". And I know he would find at least some songs that he'd enjoy because he's always praising artists like Zach Bryan (Bryan is great, not a diss) for his "truth". If there ever was an artist known for their truth, it's fu****g Benjamin Tod
He's a stand up guy who has a record of staying hours after his late shows to help the stadium crew clean up. If he'd sold out to "big country music" he'd sound a whole lot more like pop country that plays on the radio.
1000x this. She's reconfiguring so many strains of the last hundred years of popular music it's mind-boggling. At this point I think we're in Cosmic American Music territory.
Would definitely be at the top of my list of artists that weren't mentioned in this video. Last time I saw him was opening for Charley in Amarillo and it was a great show. Stoked to see him up here at the Dad Lounge in Trinidad in a week or so.
For a Guy from Germany, like me, who has fallen in love with country music, it`s really cool to see what kinds of country music there are. thanks for that!
First off Tyler Childers turned me into a country music fan. I grew up in the 70s being forced to listen to country music. I would be in the back seat of the car getting car sick while Willie Nelson played on the radio on family road trips. I think I associated nausea with CW music. Spent a lot of years denying myself the joy that is country music. However, I’ve always loved bluegrass! The banjo, fiddle, mandolin, a stand up bass…LOVE! So when I saw this video I immediately looked up the Appalachian/Bluegrass artists. Already a fan of Billy Strings, who I love, I looked up Cole Chaney and he did not disappoint. I tell everyone to look up Cole Chaney. Every song on his album Mercy is great. My personal favorite is ‘Leave’ then ‘Humble Enough to Hear’ and then all the songs! Lol. I hope this guy gets the credit he deserves. He is so good!
Ian Noe and Arlo McKinley I think deserve a much bigger platform! They have so much depth and emotion to their voices. Not that he is indie, but I am also super excited to watch Sam Williams career take off! His voice is amazing!!!
I think you've mentioned him, but my wife and I have been listening to Joshua Ray Walker out of Dallas. About to go see him live again this week. Fantastic falsetto/yodel technique in his music. Listen to "Voices" and "Canyon"
Now that he’s signed, I feel like Ian Munsick has chance to be a bridge for some of these guys too with his mix of mainstream and non sounds. He’s grown on me big time. Love Muscadine Bloodline. Their live show is amazing, if you ever get a chance to see them. One of the rare acts even better in person.
Thanks for always shining a positive light on West Virginia and Appalachia! CWG is a personal favorite, and I’m glad he’s a fellow WV’ian. Also, my wife and I love Emily Scott Robinson. “Better With Time” is on constant repeat at our house!
Reckless Kelly and Micky & The Motorcars have been longtime favorites of mine. Then, I got hooked on Lori McKenna’s music in 2018. Gabe Lee, Emily Scott Robinson, Yola & Ian Noe were my big 4 discoveries in 2019 (I think Gabe Lee really is the future of country! He’s a great songwriter, but he also does a variety of country styles and knocks them all out of the park!) One of my friends put me onto a band called Shaker Hymns last year. Not sure how big they’ll get, but they’re a great Texas country/rock band (along with RK & MATM.) Also, just now getting on the Flatland Cavalry and Kaitlin Butts train, but they’re also great!
I've lived in a small town in Kentucky all my life. You can't imagine just how much good music is bleeding out of our state. I've played guitar since I was 14 (I'm 46 now), and I've met just some local people through the years that are unbelievable songwriters or play instruments. It's awesome to witness it whenever I do, but also kinda sad because some would like to hit it big, but won't ever be acknowledged.
I found your videos about 3 weeks ago, and as a very casual listener to country music I have to say you have shown me so much great music that I am now finding myself listening to more country then anything else now. Thank you for that.
I LOVE Kaitlin Butts' White River it has a similar vibe as Two Black Cadillacs and I just love the imagery in it it almost feels like an audiobook with how vividly she describes a murdrr
Caamp, Ira Wolf, Trampled by Turtles are true gems that are classified as Folk/Americana, though I believe that many of indie country fans would love their music. From the pure country scene I would definitely name Shane Smith & the Saints and Grady Spencer & The work that are missing on the list.
Senora May (just put out a new album) has some gorgeous videos on UA-cam and two records on Spotify. "Lainhart," or "Milk from the Mountain." and Katie Pruitt! Her debut record (after an OurVinyl EP) was so phenomenal. Her voice is absolutely - super powerful and raspy. I think if you like Morgan Wade you'll like KP! She's touring with American Aquarium this fall. And Allison Russell (of Birds of Chicago) just put out her debut solo album - she and Yola are buddies and Yola did some harmonies on the record. "Persephone," and "Montreal," "Nightflyer." Love so many folks you mentioned and learned about a ton more. Thanks for the videos!
Over the past5 to 8 years I've come across many new artists that have impressed me very much. Just a few are Wahl, Childers, Moreland, Strings and James and Stapleton. Some very good voices to go with the music.
Came here to comment the same thing! I saw him open for Colter Wall a few years ago and I've been a big fan ever since. Road Runner gets stuck in my head weekly.
As far as bluegrass goes, Matt Heckler is amazing. He tours with Lost Dog Street Band often. A few of my favorite songs of his are Haw River Ballad & Going Across the Sea
I love your Independent Country Music Stars videos. I discover a new artist through the video, but I also search the comments for mention other artists. Thank you.
One of my favorites who still flies under the radar of a lot of people is Red Shahan. "Men and Coyotes" was a great album, "Culberson County" was probably my favorite album of 2018 and he just released another solid album "Javelina". I highly suggest looking into him if you haven't yet.
Mr Smith. I've written at least one of these so far. I know you have ups and downs in terms of how you feel this channel is going but I have to tell you, it's is videos like these that I live for and look forward to. These dudes and dudettes are music for the soul. My soul. It's cool to see your approach and analysis evolve. Chin up my dude. Good job.
Just wanna say THANK YOU for existing. This channel you've created has really made my life better because I found it so hard to find these indie artists and I love indie. I find indie artists so much easier in other genres, but not country.
Well done Grady! So many of my current favorites were in this video! To add on I'd recommend: Singer/Songwriter J.R. Carroll ("Waiting" is a good starter). And some Texas guys: Vincent Neil Emerson (25 & Wasting Time), Jesse Daniel (Bringing Home the Roses) and Josh Ward (The Devil Don't Scare Me)
Arlo McKinley. Logan Halstead’s uncle. One of those once in a while artists you come across where you just put him on and let his songs play through without skipping around. Favorites: This Damn Town Waiting for Wild Horses Bag of Pills The Hurtin’s Done
Absolutely love Morgan Wade! Had tickets to American Aquarium with her supporting in Denver last year. Was super disappointed when it got canceled. Hope she makes her way this way soon!
I just can't stop listening to Morgan Wade's album. Same with Yola. There's a lot of people I don't know in that list. Plenty to discover. It's going to be fun!
The few that I havent seen mentioned, but have been making big waves over the past few years are Amigo the Devil, Benjamin Tod, Nick Shoulders, and Willi Carlisle
My Aunt was the English teacher to the boys of 49 Winchester! Turned me on to them when I was talking about the kind of music I like at a family reunion. I love them!
I think this should be a series of 10-15 minutes videos focusing on one person not necessarily breaking down an artist but more just showing of some of there best music and lyrics just let the music speak for itself.
Grady, the song I love by Flatland is Sober Heart of Mine. I heard about it through you and I started playing it a lot and it's now a staple song for me and my buddies, just has such great sound. Thanks again for keeping me up to date on what to look for in country, keep up the hard work!
Thomas Csorba is an artist out of texas with a somewhat recent self titled release that is really solid. He had music released in 2017 and its no longer on spotify.
Great list! I seen about half of these at the Laurel Cove Music Festival this past weekend. Which by the way was phenomenal!! But one you didn't mention, who is my all time favorite artist/artists and also played at the Laurel Cove Music Festival, is Benjamin Tod/Lost Dog Street Band. Him and Ashley have been around for a long time and have made a huge buzz but they keep flying just under the radar. We need more people like yourself, with some influence, to get his/their name out there more, to get more people to look into them and check them out. I would say ones to check out by Ben himself would be, "Using Again" or "We Ain't Even Kin." This one will be a hard one for me because I literally love every single song, but as for his group Lost Dog Street Band, I would say probably, "Hells Canyon" or "War Inside of Me." To be honest, every single song by them is just amazing though. Especially the older stuff with Nicolas Ridout before he passed.
I love that you gave another shout out to Charles Wesley Godwin. In fact, I've been working in the same studio where he recorded Seneca and with a guy who worked on that album and who plays in his band. So, all that considered, if I can do something that's even a fraction as good as what he did, I'll be happy. 😊

If you love specific lyrics and good stories, check out Waterbill by Red Shahan. Great imagery without using the run of the mill subjects matter.
Red shahan, Michigan Rattlers, lil smokies. Immediate list right there. Top 3 right now

Benjamin Tod of lost dog street band. He's been around forever but I'm not sure he gets the credit he deserves as a songwriter
Edit :Well this is the most attention any of my comments has gotten. So I'll go ahead and ask y'all to give me some feedback on my songs if y'all want... Worth a try lol

Benjamin Tod, his solo work, and his band Lost Dog Street Band. That man really goes against the grain
For sure! He’s great
It seems like he spitefully ignores him because Ben's fans have been pestering him to acknowledge Benjamin Tod/Lost Dog forever now. sidenote: Tyler Childers is unbelievable especially when considering all his old and under-recognized music
He’s a sell out
He's a stand up guy who has a record of staying hours after his late shows to help the stadium crew clean up.
If he'd sold out to "big country music" he'd sound a whole lot more like pop country that plays on the radio.
@@Private0Malley the dude literally just cut an old time fiddle album. Like the furthest humanly possibly for pop country.

Nick Shoulders is amazing.

Well done on mentioning Sierra Ferrell. Her debut album just went on preorder. She’s a superstar.
1000x this. She's reconfiguring so many strains of the last hundred years of popular music it's mind-boggling. At this point I think we're in Cosmic American Music territory.

I’ve had Cole Chaney on repeat every since I found out about him... my lord the guy can write and his voice delivers so well
Every song on the album is amazing.
Coal shooter is amazing!
Brent Cobb is currently my favorite independent country artist. Also CWG is the man!
John Moreland - You don't care enough for me to cry
Thank you for mentioning Kat Hasty. I would also suggest The Highway Song, and Where The Wildflowers Lay.
I can’t think of a follow-up album I’ve been waiting for with more anticipation than Charles Wesley Godwin.
My favorites out of the generation, Colter Wall, The Dead South, and Tyler Childers
Love some Zach Bryan. My wife and I were on his Belting Bronco series. Can’t say enough good things about him
Jesse Daniel is my favorite! Especially his new song 'Think I'll stay' is a jam
Would definitely be at the top of my list of artists that weren't mentioned in this video. Last time I saw him was opening for Charley in Amarillo and it was a great show. Stoked to see him up here at the Dad Lounge in Trinidad in a week or so.
*Daniel ;-) I have been very lucky to be able to listen to his next album and the whole thing is awesome!
Saw him open up for Jason Boland Last February. His newest album is real good
For a Guy from Germany, like me, who has fallen in love with country music, it`s really cool to see what kinds of country music there are. thanks for that!
Billy Strings is amazing. For best songs, I would recommend “Watch It Fall” or “Taking Water.”

You check out 49 Winchester! Their songs Hays, Kansas and Everlasting Lover are 👌🏼
Love that Morgan Wade is getting the love she deserves!
I would also check out Joshua Ray Walker
The amount of great artists and music recommendations in this one is outstanding.
Man, that was a great compilation of talent to check and enjoy, your work is priceless, I never miss one. Thanks, keep It up
I love that you gave another shout out to Charles Wesley Godwin. In fact, I've been working in the same studio where he recorded Seneca and with a guy who worked on that album and who plays in his band. So, all that considered, if I can do something that's even a fraction as good as what he did, I'll be happy. 😊
I need you to check out Yola!
I love these styles of videos. Going deeper dives into new Artists and genres.
Kolby Cooper is the man. Songs are crazy catchy, and crazy good.
I still say ya should check out Logan Mize. Guy from small town Kansas cranking out damn good music.
