17:41 The beautiful chorus you are hearing is Phil singing backing vocals. I cannot get through this song when Phil is singing lead without crying, it's just beautiful and emotional. You HAVE to do a reaction to "Seconds Out Live" or/and even watch 18:38 the "LYCEUM" concert from 1980! It is truly the most amazing thing to witness!

If it's possible to believe, Steve Hackett's playing is even better now. So much emotion he can generate by the speeding up and slowing down, the bending of notes, the pauses. He's brilliant, and his band is all fantastic.
Although I love this whole album, you're entering into my favorite stretch now. The Lamia is one of the most beautiful songs from Genesis, musically, vocally, and lyrically. Enjoy!

Everyone loves The Carpet Crawlers but for me, The Chamber of 32 Doors is one of the best tracks on the album. All 5 members of the band provide exactly what is needed from them. Peter's impassioned vocals, Phil's understated drumming, Tony & Steve providing the atmosphere and Mike leading us along with the bass.

I'm with you. For me, the lyrics perfectly match Peter Gabriel's feelings about quitting Genesis. The counterpart to this song is Solsbury hill. He feels part of the scenery, part of a machinery/everyone is pointing but nowhere feels quite right/ Which connection I should cut/help me find a door that doesn't lead me back again. One song shows despair and anguish, the other, liberation. Genesis at its best, IMHO.

Such an incredibly moving piece of music - I was fortunate enough that my parents brought Genesis music into my life having heard them on the radio in the mid-70's and falling in love. Carpet Crawl/Crawlers was one of their favourites. Sadly, both have since left this world and I'm not ashamed to say that during playback of your video I shed a tear or two and offered my heartfelt thanks to them both for bringing this great gift into my life.
Steve, you're a pure 💯% legend mate. Once again, I raise a glass to you - thank you for your open, honest and unfussy reactions which cut straight to the heart and soul of each piece - brilliant 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

And right from the start in his time with Genesis, already on Nursery Cryme - for example on Hogweed, a peal of bells, arco violins - plus sometimes making it almost indistinguishable what he's playing and what Tony Banks is playing on the keyboards. To say nothing of the TAPPING and other techniques too! On TLLDOB he's sometimes using a Hi-Fly guitar synthesizer, now very rare.

You just heard some of the following part of Peter's short story on the inside cover of the album, "He returns from his mixed-up memories to the passage he was previously stuck in. This time he discovers a long carpeted corridor.
The walls are painted in red ochre and are marked by strange insignia, some looking like a bulls-eye, others of birds and boats. Further down the corridor, he can see some people; all kneeling. With broken sighs and murmurs they struggle, in their slow motion to move towards a wooden door at the end. Having seen only the inanimate bodies in the Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging, Rael rushes to talk to them.
"What's going on?" he cries to a muttering monk, who conceals a yawn and replies "It's a long time yet before the dawn." A sphinx-like crawler calls his name saying "Don't ask him, the monk is drunk. Each one of us is trying to reach the top of the stairs, a way out will await us there." Not asking how he can move freely, our hero goes boldly through the door. Behind a table loaded with food, is a spiral staircase going up into the ceiling.
At the top of the stairs he finds a chamber. It is almost a hemisphere with a great many doors all the way round its circumference. There is a large crowd, huddled in various groups. From the shouting, Rael learns that there are 32 doors, but only one that leads out. Their voices get louder and louder until Rael screams "Shut up!" There is a momentary silence and then Rael finds himself the focus as they direct their advice and commands to their new found recruit. Bred on trash, fed on ash the jigsaw master has got to move faster. Rael sees a quiet corner and rushes to it.
He stands by a middle-aged woman, with a very pale skin who is quietly talking to herself. He discovers she is blind and asking for a guide. "What's the use of a guide if you got nowhere to go" asks Rael. "I've got somewhere to go," she replies "if you take me through the noise, I'll show you. I'm a creature of the caves and I follow the way the breezes blow."
He leads her across the room and they leave the crowd, who dismiss their departure as certain to fail.
When through the door, the woman leads Rael down the tunnel. The light of the chamber soon fades and despite her confident step Rael often stumbles in the darkness.
After a long walk they arrive in what Rael judges to be a big round cave, and she speaks a second time asking him to sit down. It feels like a cold stone throne.
"Rael, sit here. They will come for you soon. Don't be afraid." And failing to explain any more she walks off. He faces his fear once again."

I always bought double albums with some trepidation - who can create that much good stuff to fill out over an hour of listening? The Beatles "White Album" is one that doesn't disappoint, The Who's "Quadrophenia" is another, and of course this album holds it's place in the pantheon of the best. The contrast between music now and the '70's could not be greater - back then we were happy to be immersed in long songs, long albums, now it's single repetitive themes stretched out to 2 minutes at most. As Neil Young said "Rock and Roll will never die" ...

Carpet Crawlers... a "carpet crawler" is a colloquialism for a toddler, and more crudely, "sperm." Honestly, this song appears to be all about sex. "Got to get in (sex) to get out (birth)." It's the cycle of life, being born and seeking to get back into a woman. Disagree with me if you want, but as Peter sings in "Digging in the Dirt," a song which chronicles his own psychological healing:
The more I look, the more I find
As I close on in, I get so blind
I feel it in my head, I feel it in my toes
I feel it in my sex, that's the place it goes

I think in 'Carpet Crawlers' Peter is commenting on how people think they can game the system. When they 'get in' they will know how to get out on their own terms. Climbing up the social ladder, the employment ladder, pushing past others to reach the door and get into the 'chamber'.....that is their goal. But are they aware of what they are doing. Are they really getting ahead? Free will is an important idea in this journey of Peter's. Also, being mindful; understanding ourselves and where we are truly going. It comes to a head in the next tune.

The phrase "get in to get out" contains both religious and social subtext. People are imposed with the possibilities of the dogma that our earthly life is only a prelude to the Heaven, and to get there, we must go through the "eye of the needle" of purgatory. To do this, it is necessary to overcome earthly goods and meet the requirements of their spiritual mentors. People are also imposed with social behavioral stereotypes that set them the desire to become the most successful in life, to climb as high as possible on the career ladder. The song also traces an allegorical comparison of the human desire for success from the spermotozoon to fertilize an egg. The "crawlers", moving along the dark “red ochre corridor” in a single desire, find themselves in a cherished room, reminiscent of sperm found in female solitude, which they need to “get in”, in order to conceive a new life there and, having been born, to “get out” into the light.
    That’s Peter for you
