The mezzo soprano is incredible in her expression. Choir, orchestra and soloists are spot on. Even the silences work enhancing the entire performance. Awesome rendition of an awesome requiem.

This recording is just magnificent! Hopefully this gets its well earned millions of views.
Plus, I think i's the only version where the bassoon is receiving enough recognition during the quid sum miser in its solo.

I think it's shocking that the soloists have to keep their eyes glued to the score ( the tenor largely excluded from this criticism,) as they perform this extremely well-known, often performed classic. I first heard the Requiem in 1964 or '65 performed at NY's Lewison Stadium including Met opera singers Lucine Amara and Richard Tucker and since then many times with many different performing forces. I assure you, it used to be the case that soloists in great works such as the Verdi Requiem would only glance down at their scores from time to time. If by the time of performance you are so uncertain of the very notes and words you are to sing you cannot give the degree of attention to your artistic, your emotional involvement in the interpretation that you ought to.

For example, in the 1967 Von Karajan lead performance as seen here on UA-cam, both Leontyne Price and Fiorenze Cossoto perform the entire work from memory

Who is the conductor of this great choir?

    • @nattergal64

      There are two choirs:
The largest: Oslo philharmonic choir, conductor: Øystein Fevang
and Schola Cantorum: Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl
I was so lucky to sing in the choir. One of my best experiences as a choir-singer. Mahler 2 with Saraste another. Unfortunately not on tape as I know.

Chrousmaster is Øystein Fevang. And it's being performed again this week in Oslo Concert Hall.
