- While staying with Ravi during my ankle injury recovery, his wife Masha cooked me a special dinner full of variety and flavour.
Many of the ingredients, such as the coconuts and the Gotu Kola leaves were grown in Ravi's garden. Other locals ingredients were obtained during our visit to the local supermarket.
Many of these ingredients I'd never even heard of before. Trying something local and for the first time is always an amazing experience when traveling.
Ravi said that this meal would be better than anything I could get in a restaurant, as restaurants always have to consider their profit and never use the very best ingredients for every part of the dish. What I got was the very best and I loved it.

"Please eat more, I will bring you some more food//", This is so typical phrase in Sri Lankan homes when they treat guests and visitors..This reminds me of my mom offering food to guests
It's basically like being taken hostage and not being able to leave the table until you've had double helpings :)

I’m a Srilankan tamil lives in UK. And been to 22 countries for my work purposes - means ate and drink with locals.
Spent my life with sinhalish and Muslims when I was in kandy for my higher studies. Unforgettable friends and hospitality. No words can’t reflect my previous honeymoons. But your videos does.
I twisted my feet exactly where you twisted. ( in kandy railway tracks) Same again here once in Glasgow but people just called the ambulance and left ( I’m still tankful ) but No one gave me any first aids like my nationals.
One of our Srilankan touched and massaged your feet on that spot and said ( நம்ம நாட்டுக்கு வந்தவன நாமதான் பாக்கணும் )
Which means- whoever comes to our country we must to look after them.
I was blooming and yes of course; proud to be a Srilankan.
After watching a lot of your videos in Sri Lanka, I realized that we have some same words in Indonesia. Like sambol, it's like a side dish to flavor up the food. We have sambal, made of chilli, shallots, garlic, etc to spice up our food.
And then they have jambu (you've tried the spicy one from the seasoned fruits merchant after you visited the red mosque) , we called it jambu air, in Wikipedia they called watery rose apple.
In Indonesia jambu means guava, but there are lot of kind of jambu. "Jambu air" is usually very sweet, crunchy, with lots of water in it!
The world must just love these people. They are the best !!!

Cooking is my passion and I would have involved in the cooking and cutting and prepping aspect.I would have also learned to cook some Sri Lankan dishes. They have great fresh seafood and the Crabs are so huge and tasty.

I’m a Sri Lankan. Usually we like to feed the visitors as much as possible. So we like to be around them. So specially the house wife won’t join the dining table. She would fill the curry bowls while the others are eating, bring whatever the things they asked eg finger bowls, more water

Gosh, this actually gave me goosebumps! The Gotu Kola Sambol looks luscious! I was here after seeing your accident video and in that I thought you skipped the authentic meal prep due to bad weather. However, Dale, you are indeed a lucky fella, cuz that's authentic Sri Lankan cousin, cooked in clay pots with all local ingredients and dished out with much love. And I must say, you're eating like a PRO! Hats off to Ravi, Masha and their lovely family who committed their time and effort to make a big difference and leaving you with wonderful set of memories despite the tragic accident.

The English term for “gotukola” is “Pennywort”(Centella)
Dale would like that a Scottish person was involved in naming Asian pennywort under sub family en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinlayoideae . However,molecular studies says the genus centella belongs to the subfamily Mackinlayoideae and family Apiaeceae.
I was about to comment with the English name until I saw this one.
Centella is not an English term. It’s the scientific term of the plant. So basically it’s either Latin or Greek.
So the pennywort in English cuisine too??
And many foreigners will know it as ashwa gandh. ..tablets and leaves really good for depression

I’m Sri Lankan, I don’t like thumba karawila at all. But it’s very good for our health. So I just swallow them as quickly whenever it’s served for lunch. 🤣🤣

Dear, in south asia, mainly countries like India, Srilanka and Pakistan people usually use their hands to eat and it's part of their culture. When using hands brain gets the "enough" signal so easily when we full. And using cutlery used by someone else may not be clean at shops. Trust your own hands, after washing well you know they're clean. Nice video. Keep it up 💪

Nice one Dale. Yes , brinjal is just the Sri Lankan name for auberjine or eggplant. Also Sri Lankans use maldive fish in a lot of their cooking, normally ground into powder. Most vegetable dishes will also contain maldive fish, which might not please strict vegetarians.

Normally most culture people don't stand near watching but at least one sit in to give company, incldng SL, India... But Dale was filming it so I see the reluctance for joining.
