Playing Diablo 2 for the FIRST time in 2024 (THIS WAS UNEXPECTED!)

  • As someone who's only played Diablo 4 and Immortal, the roots of the franchise were alien to me.
That was until I was forced to play the 'best' game in the genre, Diablo 2.
My journey took me from being an FPS fan to falling in love with the classic ARPG.
Despite some of the pitfalls and the insane learning curve, this experience taught me that sometimes the most rewarding gaming experiences come from stepping out of my comfort zone, and embracing the challenges of a classic game.

welcome, hope you have a great time!
no matter what i play i always come back to this game. so many options: different caracters, builds, modes (normal, ladder hardcore, classic). and if you need something different, mods.
the best part: no daylie quests that you need to do or youll forgoe benefits. simply do as you please.
no microtransactions! (though i do admit i would like one or two).
    1. pay a dollar/euro per additional stash tab. bye bye mules. (id probably get 20-30)
    2. and/or 5 dollars for stackable items like gems runes potions keys etc.
    greetings from austria

its so nice to hear a fresh perspective on D2, Thank you for putting the video together. Having more than 20 years of game experience I'll just say you have a ton more to learn. Normal mode is pretty easy and the difficulty curve has pretty harsh jumps between difficulties. Hell specifically introduces normal monsters having immunity to various forms of magic so often times you will need to make a trade off between building dual element at the cost of damage, or learning to avoid/bypass whole monster types as they will all be immune to you.
Short of having a full build and walkthrough out in front of you (maxroll) my main tips are as follows: the difficulty increases by area so as you progress through the zones the monsters will be getting harder even if you aren't getting stronger. I recommend spending time farming places like The Countess and Secret Cow level until you are overleveled for the next difficulty (40+ for NM, 60+ for hell). Remember you only have to make the run once so your objective is only to get the waypoint or quest objective and move on. on the same note, dont be afraid of quitting the game and reloading your save as the monster rolls in an area may make it totally unpassable on your build; if you see Souls Reroll. Player power comes mainly through gear so other than the minimal investment in STR to run said gear all your points should be in VIT as its your only real defensive stat.
The final and probably most critical element (pun intended) is that elemental damage hits hard in D2. In normal mode you start with 0 resistance baseline, however Nightmare you start at -40 and Hell you start at -100. in general you want to be at the resistance cap (+75) for at least Fire and Lightning as many enemies in the game will 1 shot you starting in nightmare.

    • @CasualGamerYT
      @CasualGamerYT  2 місяці тому

Thanks for this thoughtful and well written comment. The part about don't be afraid of quitting and reloading is particularly reassuring. I have so much to learn!

@@CasualGamerYT for a veteran the story clear (Level 0 through Baal on Hell Difficulty) is between 10 and 20 hours of game time depending on the class and some RNG. There are a ton of tips and tricks regarding how to know the direction to go, what to spend your time on, and gear to target farm that make this possible. The tips above are mostly just defensive as being able to survive to the next objective means eventual story progression. As stated above there are particularly brutal enemies that are generally considered over-tuned and will ruin your run if they end up spawning in an area. I'm sure you met Souls (ghosty boys who shoot lightning) when you were going through Act 3 or 4 and coupled with increased monster power and reduced player resistance in later difficulties will 100% 1-shot you. Even experienced players will reload their game if they find a Great Marsh or Plains of Despair that is loaded with souls; the game picks from a list of 4-5 enemies for each zone every time it loads so often a reload removes them. Another especially savage enemy are dolls (miniature skeletons with cleavers) that have an on-death corpse explosion that will 1 shot you and or your merc. they tend to be in lower part of A3 but they show back up in A5. either way, avoiding both either physically or through reloading is generally considered best-practice.
After the story the game becomes a loot grind, but one that is arguably the forefather of all modern loot games. The code is simple and known, however what the game doesn't tell you is that everything is built on hard-coded drop tables that check various things like game settings, area, monster stats and player level; in short depending on where you farm you may never see the drop you are looking for. The post-Baal content they added with Terror Zones (TZ) in D2R largely fixed this with a more contemporary player-scaling system, however TZs are always going to be over-leveled compared to the player so they have increased difficulty. Outside of TZs the area you farm largely dictates your drops, limiting the best loot to a handful of areas, which has been cited as the main criticism of the pre-Resurrection endgame. Bosses are really good sources for loot so going back to Mephisto once you overlevel him somewhat can net you big increases in player power. its somewhat seen as "Cheese", but look into "the moat trick" for mephisto as it will make farming him significantly easier.
I looked through your channel/website a bit and didn't see anywhere to check out the VOD of your D2 clear or anywhere you stream. Did I just miss them? I'm sure every older-game community says it, but the D2 community is one of the best around and can make the loot grind of endgame a lot more engaging. There are tons of folks, like myself, who are super willing to give advice, check resources, and answer questions while just hanging in chat, so if you are considering investing time into D2 I would suggest considering streaming it. If you are interested I can give you some streamers whos communities I am part of as well to see how the game plays with a community. However I don't want to list any other creators on your content without permission as I find it rude. The new Ladder season just started this past Thursday so there will be plenty of fresh content on game clears loaded with tips and tricks.

Welcome to the OG! I think the word you used that basically describes the overall theme is “earned”. Everything feels earned, therefore feels satisfying. For being the first of its kind, it got so many things right. I’m also absolutely convinced Blizzard refuses to update D2R with anything modern because it would outclass D4 in a heartbeat. Good luck in Hell Mode 😉

This is definitely a game from an era where hand-holding hadn't been invented yet lol. There are definitely some nice features in modern games that help smooth over the learning experience. The problem I run into is when they also smooth over the difficulty by basically making the game easier each re-play rather than trusting the player can learn. D2 and some other now-archaic titles will always hold my interest because I know when I defeat a boss its because I played well, not because the game decided it needed to let me win this time. I especially respect D2 for introducing Hardcore mode. As a classic Rogue fan I love the idea of perma death. Clearing all difficulties without dying a single time is a true mark of player ability.

I use Traderie for trading it's not perfect but helps alot.
In terms of farming, Terrorized Andariel & Chaos is the best. Then non-TZ Chaos ;P but that's on bnet. When I farm chaos I go for ''seal pop'' strategy probably the best drop in game during TZ /p8.
On single player you can add Lower Kurast chest runs on /players 8 good for rune drops or even better you can change the clock in windows and fish for Andy, Chaos or other favorite TZ xD.
Ohh and there is fun trick for having longer teleports, you start teleporting and hold mouse button and then open skill tree or character screen and you will have longer teleports but its kind of min maxing travel time :P.
    Good luck

I played Diablo 2 for 9 years. Still one of my favorite games to date. For the first 3 years I didn't know you could craft items in the Horadric Cube. Like I knew about upgrading potions and gems but I had no idea about crafting gloves, belts, rings, etc... I eventually started making a decent profit of crafting gloves that I would trade. Many amazons that wanted the knockback but not to use a Nef rune in their weapon or Clegaws Gloves because they were BM in duels would pay 2-5 SOJ/HRs for them if you made knockback gloves with 20% IAS and a few other valuable stats. Then I figured out I could gamble on a gold find barb for Circlets, Amulets, and Rings and that was super easy and I could still get ingredients for my crafting side gig too. I got several Rings I sold for 40 SOJs before. If you get 10% fcr with 15% all res and like 10+ strength on a ring people would pay a lot.

Once you get a few with your torch and anni your space gets used up really quickly. At that level potions only go in your belt and your cube is for pickups. Anything you find on your run you may want to keep. Big tip. Hotkey your cube. Makes things really easy

"Using the right skill" right after saying chain lightning to kill a boss (single target.) This game is much more than just the campaign the replay ability is insane. The economy is still better than any of the game after since they dont have one, the skill progression is also much better and the loot actually feel special specially when you understand how break points work. There is just so much layer for something so simple.

Blizzard North-the developers behind the game mechanics-was a separate studio from Blizzard South. At the time BS was charged with focusing on the cinematics. They were so seperate that often the folks up north had NO idea what the folks down south were doing, and many of the folks up north were concerned that the focus on cinematic storytelling over the pure game mechanics that they felt should be the main focus of the game (even if it meant they sacrificed some or most of the narrative) would overshadow what they were doing. It was very much a source of contention, and it led to numerous delays but IMO it all came together nicely. Lord of Destruction was the rare expansion that updated what came before in ways that didn't take away from but added to what worked and didn't cost an arm and a leg to get.
Sadly, it was the end of an era of gaming where the focus was on quality products vs making money. Vivendi bought them out and most of the original creatives behind the first two games left. If you want to play a pair of great arpg's check out Torchlight and Torchlight II. The folks behind this game went on to create those. Just ignore the games in that series that came out after.

Take your time. Also increasing the player count in game (only works locally and not on BNet) with the /players X (X being number 1-8 since 8 is the cap in a game) this gives you a way harder time but also much more XP and a higher chance of better loot. Loot is not very rewarding in Normal, but in Nightmare some cool (good) items start to drop. The recommended level for each difficulty is Normal 1-40, Nightmare 40-60+ and then Hell 60+ but preferably 70.
Try not to put your points all over but put them on the spells you actually need for damage and their synergies, also try to go dual element since later in Nightmare and in Hell particularly, you will often find immune monsters to several elements.
Resistance will be -75 for each difficulty so getting good resistances is important, only stacking resistance for survival can also backlash and make you miss out on other good mods on items so focus mainly on the dangerous ones being fire and lightning.
Try not to look things up, such as builds and all the nit n gritty. Truly soak in the experience as many of us did at one point and enjoy the satisfaction from beating the game on Hell without any help.
I've played it since it came out and could tell you all about things but I choose not to, because it's important to just enjoy the ride. I think the tips above were non invasive in this and for this I am satisfied.
