This video shows the full restoration and ride of a 1984 Koga-Miyata Road Winner Bike.
Koga teamed up with Miyata from Japan in the 1970’s to produce top end road bicycles for the market. Miyata produced the frames and Shimano provided the components. The Bicycles were assembled by hand in the Netherlands, and really are beautiful bikes to ride.
Watch the bicycle completely stripped down, cleaned, restored and assembled before the bike is back out on the open road where it belongs. This bike restoration really was a pleasure to do and the results were very rewarding. I hope these videos inspire you to recycle that old bicycle, and give it some new life.

I have two Miyatas, a 1986 One Thousand in full touring mode, and a 1991 Nine 14, they are daily riders and I love them both.
the TSB tubing cannot be beat for comfort, weight to strength, and ride quality.
Thanks for sharing your rides and experience of your Miyatas. They truly are very well built bicycles. Thanks for watching 👍
Love this bike since 1983 when I bought it new. Still riding it as a winter training machine. Tremendous quality and ride experience. I love it!
Thanks for sharing your personal experiences and watching it’s much appreciated
Wow that's a real treat. True Story... Back in the early 80s I became a CAT-1 and got my self Team Capri Sonne, Koga Miyata, it was a blue & gold team issue with all DuraAce. To me there was no better racing bike, it was all business. I eventually got to work with and personally know the Shimano family & Mr. Miyata as I worked at a bike shop near the Japan Group head office in Glendale Calif. Being a pro racer & mechanic they were always in the shop picking my brain for technical advise and in return gave me prototype racing components to test. One day they gave me a set of ARAYA Titanium rims, they were stunningly beautiful & very expensive. But after a month of training & racing they would mysteriously crack at the eyelets. So they kept giving them to me to see if I could figure out the problem. One day my friend who worked at Skunk Works stopped by the shop to fix his bike. He was in charge of the Titanium skin on the SR-71 Black Bird so I showed & asked him what can be causing these mysterious cracks on my Ti rims? It took him about 5 seconds to figure it out!!! He said "you can not have galvanized steel spoke eyelets pressed against Titanium as it causing a chemical reaction that makes Titanium crack". I was shocked to say the least. The very next day the whole Shimano & Araya entourage show up at my shop and they too were shocked by making such a mistake. And right on the spot they offered me to work for them. A month later I was traveling back & forth to Japan and did so for many years. So yes, that racing Koga Miyata was a major part of my life. Anyways nice job. Sincerely Dan
Wow...wow Ive had some comments before! That has got to be up there, very interesting and a big thank you for sharing your story. Sounds like you've had a great life traveling, I love Japan only been once but absolutely loved it there. Glad you enjoyed the video thank you for your support, all the very best for the festive period Andy
Love Miyata I really want one now! Japanese steel bikes were really good
Glad you like them, I should find more
@@BikeItUK please do, Japanese bikes were underrated
I just restored a Koga-Miyata One Hundred. Very clean bike and the components dont seem to have aged a bit.
Lovely bicycle, great to keep these steel bikes alive 👍 thanks for watching all the best
I have a 86 motioncraft, it rides great, love it.
Very nice! Happy cycling and thanks for your support
Awesome! I love the Shimano 600 Arabesque groupsets. I have one on my 1987 Team Miyata that I pieced back together!
Right on, the Shimano 600 Arabesque is like art sound like you have a nice ride there. Thanks for the comment and the support all the very best for the festive season buddy
@@BikeItUK thanks mate! Cheers from the States!

WONDERFUL RESULT!!! 😮👏
Much appreciated thank you
Love the channel, its been getting me through the various lockdowns and even inspired me to restore a very poorly taken care of Bianchi from 2006 that I found in a friends garage. Keep up the good work!
Great to hear your getting involved...Ive still to find a Bianchi in need of some loving. Thanks for your support great to hear you've got involved. All the best for the festive season buddy take care

Love the colour scheme on this bike, saddle definitely worth the effort, looks brand new 👍
Thanks for watching, yes I was worried about matching it up. Thanks all the best
Got a Koga Miyata Prologue (2005) a few months ago... It may not be the best bike, but I absolutely love it... It fits me perfectly, it feels great, it looks awesome... And while I do wish for a better groupset and rims at some point... I don't think that I am going to change the frame in a while.
Yes the Koga Miyata frames really are quality frame sets and are lasting the test of time for sure. Thanks for sharing and watching all the best enjoy 🚴👍
That's gorgeous, really well done. 👌I'm juuuuuust about done with my own resto project; it's awesome seeing them come out from the muck.
Definitely glad to hear you are involved saving these bikes also. Thanks for watching and the support 👍🚲
@@BikeItUK Not anywhere near at the level you are, though if I'm not careful, I'm gonna end up with a garage full of 80s & 90s steel 😅😍
Great job Andy.Beutifull bike.Dream bike.
It really is thank you for watching and also your support. All the best Andy
Brilliant video! Loved the detail this time.
Thanks for the support all the best
Love all the history you give my friend, picked up a Koga Miyata Jacket at a swap meet and have been ignorant till now of the back story, thanks! Lovely build!
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoy the history side of these bicycles. All the best 👍
Thanks for another great video.
No worries, thank you for your support all the best Andy
I once had a pearly white Koga Myata Roadwinner bike that unfortunately was stolen when I left it unattended outside for a few minutes. I also knew the son of mr. Gaastra , the founder of Koga Myata bicycles, as we went to the same school for close to two 2 years. That was in Heerenveen, Friesland province, in the Netherlands. The Koga Myata factory was also located in Heerenveen. Batavus bikes were also produced there. Currently 'Accel' a major producer of regular bikes- and E-Bikes is situated in Heerenveen.
No way, this is great thanks for sharing your memories and knowledge, interesting stuff. All the very best for the festive period all the best Andy
Another great restoration. Just been catching up your latest videos. Was out of the loop for a while. All the best from Canada. John.
Welcome back and thanks again John for your support, all the best Andy

Mr. Andy, wonderful restore with this Koga-Miyata !! Love to watch your videos, getting that much closer to restoring my 1985/86 Bianchi Forza that's been sitting for a long while. You're really motivating me after I watch your vids. Keep up the great work, more vids please!!. Stay safe & healthy Sir. Alex in the U.S.
Huge thanks and I am still to feature a Bianchi....watch this space. Hope you have a great festive period and all the very best for 2021.

Another cracking build mate, never seen one of them before👍 good job with the saddle🚴♀️🏴
Thanks 👍 To be honest Id seen a few but never knew what they were about, half the fun is finding out about these bikes. Hope you have a good festive period and a great new year, all the best
@@BikeItUK same to you👍🚴♀️🏴
Another excellent restoration Andy keep up the amazing work and videos 😊👍🏻
Thanks buddy for all the support, hope you have cosy happy one
Beautiful shifters.
Thanks
What a brilliant example! Nice job, I love what you've done with the saddle!
I have the koga-miyata gran tourer from 1984, same year in my collection. Which is part from the saddle in 100% original condition. That bike came with the golden arrow groupset, I absolutely love it! Hanging on a wall of course, as eye candy.
Thanks for the comment and support, nice to hear you have yours on full display. All the very best for the festive season
Great tipps, thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Great looking build.
Thanks!
Awesome build
I'm glad you like it thanks for the support
Amazing!!! cant believe you dyed the saddle! thats gotta be a first. expert level i reckon haha! keep up the vids, loving them, cant wait for the next one :D
Thanks for your support and watching, just working on the edit of the next restoration video coming very soon. 👍
Great job my friend nice bike 👍💪🏻
Much appreciated glad you liked it 👍
Great job , great bike Andy. I'm a Campag man but that 600 groupset is lovely with all the little embellishments and engraving. The blue accents really set it off... stunning refurbishment.
Many thanks for your words of support and watching. Apparently this 600 groupset was in direct competition with the Campagnolo style, probably why you find it lovely. Thanks again and all the best for the festive period
Another smashing build, well done Andy. These Koga’s are really becoming quite collectible 👍🏼
Thanks buddy, yes the Koga-Miyata bikes are definitely becoming collectable, just glad it was so original. All the best for the festive season take care
Hello Andy,
You've done it again, you've got my heart racing! This was indeed a stunning job. Even though blue's not my colour (except musically speaking) this beauty won me over. What a sleek machine. That was a very clever one, redoing the saddle colour; you stop at nothing. You deserve a medal my good man!
It's good to be back after after a while away. God bless. Take care.
Ralph
Thank you for your words of support means a lot. All the very best to you also hope you have a great festive period. Andy
Really liking the addition of the nice detailed close-up shots while you are working on the various parts of the bike.
Glad you like, all the best for the New Year thanks for your support
I was waiting to see if you geared up in some retro Koga Myata team kit... Cool bike, nice restore. I'd love to see a video on how you went about dyeing the saddle. And, not that it would have been catalog accurate, but many a bicycle owner used to pick out the arabesque details with paint application... maybe in that lovely Koga blue. Keep saving them...
Thanks for watching and the support, the retro Koga-Miyata cycling kit is becoming hard to get hold of, plus I find it hard to drag a friend out filming in the middle of winter. Hence a quick spin out in the park. Yes it is a stunning geoupset and I can see why people would apply paint in the details, maybe next time. Thanks again and all the best for the festive period
Great work. Thanks for the content and positive attitude.
Thank you for watching, crazy times hay life is too short cycling helps. All the very best Andy
Hi! As always his work brought this beautiful bike to life. Congratulations!
Many thanks for the words of support and watching all the best
Absolutely stunning! What a nice find - i'm impressed you got the original stem and pedals as well - they really make it pop.
Thanks glad you liked it, thanks for your support it’s much appreciated
LOVE IT! I've been waiting years to see you do a Miyata. Absolutely love what you did with the saddle!
I rescued 1985 Miyata 310 from ebay in near mint condition about 6 or 7 years ago. Came with the Golden Arrow groupe apart from the cranks. Managed to find NOS in box Golden Arrow crank set to complete the groupe. Had to go with aero shifters though. Can't stand arching cables. Constantly evolving project bike but always keeping with vintage parts.
Thank you very much! Nice to hear of your personal Miyata 310 with the Gold Arrow. Thanks for your support and all the very best hope you have a great festive period.
Another great video, always informative...Colour coordination is everything......😎🇬🇧🚴🏽🎄
Absolutely, no project goes ahead with out the solution of obtaining the correct parts and colours. thanks for your support and watching all the best
@@BikeItUK have a safe Christmas 🎄..Best wishes to you and your family..Looking forward to Next year’s builds...😎🎄🚴🏽🇬🇧
Arabesque - always looks good.
Agreed...thanks for watching 👍
Sorry about the loss of your friend, the bike is a fitting tribute. The video is an inspiration to get in the garage and crack on with another restoration. Thanks for the video, stay safe and Merry Christmas from Texas.
Thanks for watching, this bike and many more to come including some great Greg Lemond bikes are from a viewer, who'd inherited them from his father. Thanks for watching, I do have a Merlin Touring Bike in line with a very interesting history. Watch this space, thanks for the support Andy
Thanks for another great video. Yes, the bikes are great, the process (ie. 'cracking on') is great. But mostly, the host is very engaging and entertaining!
Mate, thanks for the kind words of support means a lot......loads more to come!
Andy, you're the only one i've seen on UA-cam so far that restores his bike so perfectly. Nobody else i've ever seen does it so well. I really like your newer jobs, you never stop to learn.
I have lots of projects to do in winter, a puch Mistral and a capo computerrad with both Shimano 105. Some mountainbikes are also on my restauration list, like a specialized stumpjumper comp worldcup winner 1990. Hope we will see a lots of future projects from you. Greetings from austria, Luca🚴♂️
Wow, thanks buddy means a lot that. Sounds like you have the bug as worse than me. Never have enough sound like you have some sweet restorations. Thanks again and hope you have a warm festive period, all the very best Andy
Absolutely love it! Keep up the great work 💪🚲🔥!
Thanks for watching and your support 👍
Love the channel, have watched them all multiple times, great to have a new one. I’m on to my next resto project, a 1969 Holdsworth Mistral that I got from the original owner and have a log he kept of all the rides he took on it.
Great work on the saddle too
Thanks for your comment and watching many times. The Holdsworth sounds a loved classic, enjoy the restoration. All the very best Andy
Beautiful excellent restoration sir, always a pleasure to watch these videos!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for your support and watching all the best Andy
Love the video 👌🏻
Thank you 🙌
Best speaker, best mechanic and great restoration result as always, lovely blue saddle! Merry Christmas Andy!
Many thanks, and touched from one channel to another....your not bad yourself my friend! Looking forward to the Colnago build your doing. All the best to you and the family.
Haha, nice one as always, Andy! You can tell that whoever was/is owner of this bicycle, he/she kept it in very good condition. Your polishing skills are very impressive. Cheers!
Yes, this is one of many in his collection. We have some great restorations planned for 2021. All the best and thanks for the support
love it keep up the good work
Thanks, will do! All the best
Another great restoration Andy. I especially liked the saddle which was worth the effort - the whole bike looks stunning. Dutch racing bikes always seem to have more imaginative colour schemes. Many thanks for the inspirational videos this year. Happy Christmas to you and I look forward to more restorations in 2021.
Glad you enjoyed it, many more bike restorations to come in 2021. Thanks for your support and watching, Happy Christmas to you and all the very best for the New Year
Another great job on the restoration Andy! I'm into that my self and love to see the bikes look like they were meant to again. Great job on the saddle. Don't know if I would attempt that but looks great. I have one Miyata left, a 1980 Team. Nothing has been done to it since it was purchased new. I bought it from the original owner and he rode it for about 5 years, then stored it until I purchased it about 7 years ago. It's my next project after I finish the 1986 Lotus Cineilli Design Triomphe.
Thanks for watching and your support, I bet you can’t wait to get stuck into your best restoration sounds like an absolute gem. Enjoy and thanks again Andy
I have always been a fan of the shimano 600 groupset. It looks very sharp. Pre Ultegra. Great resto on that Koga-Miyata. I like the retro Japanese bikes, have a few in my collection. Thank you for using it for your restoration. Cheers and stay healthy for you and the family. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and the family too.
Many thanks for for long con't support and watching. I hope you have a cosy festive period with your loved ones, all the very best for 2021
Got a Koga Miyata MTB that I won in 93 Mitsubishi Pleiades off-road race, they made weird frames that just worked.
Interesting I’ll have to look out for a MTB Koga Miyata 👍
Absolutely beautiful build! Please keep making these videos, it's always inspiring to see a craftsman at work. Stay safe and well and have a great Christmas and let's hope for a better 2021!
Don’t you worry after this year these restorations are the only thing keeping me sane . Plenty more in the pipeline. Thanks for your support and all the very best to you also, here’s to closing the door on a very strange year
Another great restoration Andy! Apart from your technical skills you have also a great sense of the estethics of given period. Your videos where very helpful for my restoration project. My bike is the closest to this Miyata, because it is from another dutch brand - Batavus. I've bought the model "Criterium" (which was just below the "Professional" model) from 1978. Ishawata tubing (main triangle). When I bought it was in decent condition but needed general refreshing - rust here and there, bar tape to change, some polishing. Thanks to your instructional videos it looks almost like new. There is one thing which cannot be restored though - on the top tube there are tear-shaped rust dots and there are inside - just below the last layer of the paint I guess. Other than the frame look good. I bought it quite cheap in Poland where I live, so it was anyway a good choice for restoration.
Greetings from Poland!
Thanks for your comment and watching sorry for the late response. Great to hear the videos have been helpful all the best Andy
So nice to see a Dutch bike featured on here. I really learned something new with the colouring of the saddle, neat job. Best wishes for the festive season ahead and keep up the good work.
Glad you liked it, I should really hire a van and get over to pick up more Dutch bicycles. We are over loaded here in the UK with Raleigh's. Thanks for watching and your support all the best to you also, take care
@@BikeItUK good plan, I'd be happy to see one of my pending projects in your studio :)

I wish you and your family merry Christmas and a happy new year. Better early than nothing.
And the important thing, please stay well. Best Wishes from germany from Patrick ✌🎅👍
Stunning restoration Andy. That looked like a cracking job and the groupset was nicely cleaned up like new. We cycled to a cafe in the Sett valley which isn't too far from your neck of the woods today.
Sett Vally is probably a 30 minute cycle from my house, nice one hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for the words of support and watching hope you have a great festive period, all the very best

Nice channel here. You give me a lot of inspiration for the restauration of my Peugeot Tourmalet 14. wanted to "upgrade", but keep it classic looks much better^^ keep up the good work

Thats a lovely bike Andy,Dye for the saddle?Thats just genius!I dont know if youve done one before but I did have a Flying Scot once, the detail on the lugs and frame were just beautiful.Oh how I wish I had kept that one.....Keep up the good work👍

Hey Andy :) another great video man, love this Koga Miyata agree with you on the color scheme it looks real good, and what a job you made (as usual) the polishing of all those parts the crankset specially looks like new, and the seat job # 1 my friend congrats on another great restoration . My favorite part continues to be the genuine enthusiasm you show happy holidays to you and yours if we dont talk before that
Hi buddy, yes really happy with how the saddle came out. A bit of a gamble that paid off well. Thanks for your long lasting support, always nice to hear from you 👍 Hope you have a great festive period and here’s to a better new year buddy 😉 🎉
Beautiful. Nice job with the saddle. I wish you happy holidays and a lot of more Cranking On nexta Year!
Thanks, you too! Yes plenty of restorations to go at....watching this space
Top andy✌️
🤙Many Thanks for the support
I restore older steel bikes as well. But with a new twist. 28 mm tires on new carbon wheels with 11 speeds. If you think for 1 second that I would ever ride what appeared to be 21 mm tires ever again you're sadly mistaken. Neither would I have ride a 22 lbs group. While a Concour saddle was good for its day the latest 1 lb carbon saddle is lighter and more comfortable. I've been riding for 50 years and my return to steel bikes like my Basso Loto or Aliverti or Moser shows that unless you're racing, steel makes a far better choice.
You’re going to love the Pinarello we’ve just started. That’s 11 speed just like the Colnago Master build we did. The best of both worlds 👍 thanks for watching
Very nice KM! Hard to find those specially in that condition.
Yes, its great to feature and capture it on here. Thanks for the support and watching all the best
A nice bike... Guess they are more common in the Netherlands.. That 600 groupset with the scrolling was nice. Do not see those buff saddles around much these days.. Used to get a bit soggy in the rain when new until they wore smooth.. Those gear levers . never tried those . Ok to operate using side of the finger I guess when close to the frame .. Early Aero. . Like to see a Holdsworth Professional team bike rebuild one day !
Hello my friend hope you are well, thanks as always for your long lasting support. I enjoyed getting up close to one of these, Id never had my hands on one. I do have a Holdsworth in the garage at the moment, it's unfortunately not a professional model. All the best for the festive holidays thanks again Andy
Its beautyfull groupset😍
Thanks for the support and watching
you are welcome, sir, really comfort me ❤❤❤
I think that is one of the prettiest bikes you've done. How much is something like that worth?
Thanks for watching and the support, it is currently For Sale on our website at £600
Brilliant! Seen a few of your vids, and I restored my own bike a 1976 bsa Tour de France in beautiful orange, do you remember them? It rides great.
I don’t think I need to say keep on doing what you do as you seem to enjoy it so much
Many thank Stephen for your words of support and watching. Yes I still need to do a BSA on the channel, watch this space because plenty more restorations to come. Thanks again Andy
One if the best bikes ever. Made in same factory as Univega?
Thanks for watching. Not sure 🤔
Andy, I loved that restoration, in particular the fact that you kept it very original! Unfortunately for me, it's difficult to find such a Koga Miyata bike here in the USA. I went to your website for the first time and enjoyed reading your biography! I could not see any restored bikes for sale. What happen to the bikes you do not wish to keep? I hope you'll do another Koga Miyata restoration someday. Cheers from Texas!
Thanks for your support and watching, generally the bikes that do go up for sale are sold within a couple days. I generally listed them the day the video goes live. I do have plenty more to get through yet so watch this space. Thanks again and all the best
👍
Thanks for watching
Thanks, Andy, for showing us another interesting bike restoration. Your attention to the details makes such a difference to the end product and to the enjoyability of the video.
By the way, if you have a recommendation for an economy grade 27 x 1/4" city road tyre I would like to hear it! My basic Kenda tyres have done good service so I might stick with the same when I replace them on my Raleigh Grand Prix.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your long lasting support, means a lot. Regarding the tyre in all honesty I do not have a recommendation to mind. I'd say the majority of the tyres I use are 700c. I hope you have a cosy festive period and a great New Year..all the very best my friend
Love the video! Could you explain how to add the chain back on to the cassette and back? Having trouble looping it in the proper way
Thanks for watching. Maybe I should cover that on a video. It helps to not have the chain on the chain ring so there is more slack in the chain. Hope this helps
I had a friend that had a Team Miyata with 6 speed Dura Ace AX, with the Dyno Drive cranks and pedals....PS. That stem on your bike, makes my eyes hurt.
35 years ago, I got a Miyata 912 for my oldest son.
Thanks again Bill for watching and your support 👍
Happy Holiday to everyone. Ride safe 😁
Same to you to friend, all the very best Andy
Curious if you first ride in the rain will result in a blue butt 😂. Beautiful restoration again.
Thankfully no...the dye had completely dried out. Thanks for watching and the support Andy
Well done Andy... another fantastic job, for another fantastic bike. Really spot on work with the saddle, I would never have thought of that. Hope your and yours are all well, and have a lovely Christmas PS what's your thoughts on the Michelin Dynamics? Would you recommend? I usually us Panaracer PT's
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your support. The Dynamics are ok, if I was using the bike often then Id honestly be thinking of spending a bit more money on some better quality tyres. They are great for period restorations maybe not so great for your day to day use. Hope you have a great festive period all the best Andy
