Didn't Blair's religious views open the door to religious organisations controlling school trusts and hugely extending sectarian schooling? And this from the Labour Party? Surely a prime example of how a leader's religious views can create major problems for the whole country.
Take your hatred of the English elsewhere. The podcast dealt with Scottish politics, Northern Irish politics, as well as English politics. If politics was non-volatile and stable then we would live in an autocracy. Also there is no such thing as English politics, unless you mean local government. The English don't have their own parliament. It's UK politics.
@@radman8321 Someone got out of bed the wrong side this morning. There's nothing in my post which is hateful towards the English. The UK Parliament is the English Parliament in all but name as its composition demonstrates. With regards volatility, in Scotland the First Minister has just stepped down after eight years in the post, In Wales we have had the same FM for just over four years whereas in England, there have been three PMs in the last five months. Northern Ireland's position is not volatile but one of stalemate given the positioning of the DUP. Hopefully Sunak will succeed in his efforts to break the deadlock.
@@rhobatbrynjones7374 Utter nonsense, the UK parliament is the UK PARLIAMENT. It doesn't have English votes for English laws. It governs the UK and devolves certain powers that it chooses to, similarly how it devolves certain powers to councils at local level.

It did have English votes for English laws but given the inbuilt majority, this was deemed unnecessary. The establishment of the Parliaments and Assembly of the Celtic nations did not come about because of the benevolence of the English government but because of the demand for democratic accountability which the previous set-up lacked and was expressed in the referendums of 1997. The case for continuing with the democratic project remains given the English veto which the Supreme Court ruled on. The top down version of democracy which you believe is, by definition, not democratic at all.

Nicola's misstep was to believe that political arguments which expose the anti-democratic constitutional nature of Westminster would find favour in the courts. But the English constitution, as the Supreme Court reminded us, is quite clear that Westminster is the sovereign body and can veto anything. It was also a mistake in my view to prescribe the meaning of a democratic vote. In a democracy, you cannot tell the voters what their election vote means in any context so saying that a vote for the SNP meant it was actually a vote in a referendum was quite authoritarian, even if that was not the intention. It was because she had run into a cul-de-sac on this issue that she became vulnerable having to face a conference on which issue the SNP is divided. The SNP is going to have to change its strategy away from the quasi-legal approach and back to a political and democratic one, not an easy task. However now that the English veto has been exposed, that may well be the focus of their thinking. We now know that the United Kingdom is not a voluntary union and we also know that the UK Parliament is an English Parliament in all but name. How the SNP effectively addresses those issues is the challenge that awaits the new First Minister.
It is a voluntary union, the SNP just haven't respected a plebiscite that was sold as a "once in a generation vote". If the SNP had actually bothered to improve Scotland instead of constantly carping for a second referendum, they might have achieved the popular will. Instead, they will flounder at 35-40% in the polls ad nauseam and achieve little else
She could’ve made that point on so many others issues, just wish she hadn’t chosen one that’s so divisive. There’s LITERALLY a flood of potential trade/EU related legislation she could’ve picked a fight over that would’ve had not just Scots but half of England supporting her. There’s a lesson here for politicians sitting in bubbles with their fingers in their ears (same lesson as Brexit, Trump, Johnson…christ will the hurry up & learn it!!)
