I listened to the whole presentation. I’m a guitarist using midi guitar 2 & a Roland Juno G & M Audio 25. I’m 64 and diving into this app world and loving it. It is a learning curve.

Man remember when you got your first guitar and ya learned 14 chords: 7majors and 7minors. And after that some one told you about some flats and sharps. And you thought 24 chords was plenty for now. I’m 64 too and I never thought I’d ever be writing. Then the 21st century happened !

I loaded Nano Studio 1 on my iPad 1st gen recently just to make it useful again. Not many apps work on it anymore (it runs iOS 5), but NS1 is more than enough to keep it around for some casual fun.
I love Nano Studio 2 also of course, but I primarily use Cubasis because it is the most generically flexible DAW for iOS. If NS2 had audio tracks, though, I would probably use it a lot more just because it is so well designed. And yes, the built in synth and drum machine in NS2 is so good, it is easy to forget it supports AUv3. Ha!

I like to write in Nanostudio and Gadget and then send audio and/or midi files over to Cubasis for final mixing and effects or to use different synths. Usually via AudioShare.

Hey, Jakob! First, the tracks: 1:50, 3:52...Awesome!! Which underscores the point you emphasize in the video, that you’re here to make music...and finding an environment with sounds and methods that inspire and work for you is as good as it gets. Still, it’s good to get away...you may even find a second home. I’m still blown away that we can carry this stuff in our (oversized) pockets.

She was right. Describing these from the perspective of what those mean to you musically was the best path.
I do own those four apps (well, I have Cubasis 2, not 3). Haven’t used them that much since adopting AUM.
NS1 was part of my entry into iOS musicking, at the time, along with ThumbJam. Did enjoy how it sounded but the workflow didn’t stick, for me. Even less so with BM1 and BM2. Bought NS2 and BM3, tried them a few times… I’d need to carefully follow a tutorial to get my head around them.
The second phase of my iOS musicking came through Korg Gadget, around the time iWavestation came out. That pseudo-DAW did allow me to discover quite a few things, musically. It was quite satisfying. And I occasionally use the plugins from the macOS version. The cool thing about Gadget itself, I find, is about the simplicity of putting things together. Like a simplified version of Live. It’s great that you can work on the same projects between the two platforms and the Ableton Live Project export is a good idea (which makes me wish Bitwig Studio were able to load those!). My main issue really is the lack of AUv3 support. That and the lack of MPE support.
Which brings me back to Cubasis 2. Its MPE support is fine, so I occasionally do record things in there. I wouldn’t do much editing. It’s really about putting things together. Thing is, though, I achieve most of the same thing in a “DAWfree mode” using AUM (or apeMatrix or AB3). I’ll record little MIDI snippets in Photon or use some AU MIDI plugins (like Rozeta Bassline, Riffer, or Autony) to generate some patterns. Or I’ll play a softsynth using my windcontroller. Or I’ll noodle for a while with a ROLI Lightpad M Block. Playing with a whole bunch of AUv3 plugins is so rewarding and inspiring and fun and easy…
My actual vote would be: none of these. The one I’ve used the most is Cubasis 2.

I never used a pc for music, so never cubase, nor anything else, so cubasis is alien to me 🤷‍♂️. Ipad fave ended up being nanostudio, after passing thru audiobus and finding 'digital glue' isn't necessarily my thing.

    Great video Jakob!
I had already commented...an emotional outburst towards Cubasis 3, but like you (and perhaps because of you), I own all 4 of these DAWS...and some other less DAW type DAWS lol.
I like you, realize where each one fits with regard to my music production.
I use Cubasis the most because that’s my “final production app” where the finished product of whatever song I’ve created will end up to be mastered. Additionally, this applies to my DAWless/Standalone equipment like the OP-1, OP-Z etc.
I use Gadget predominantly via iOS (even though I have the desktop version - I’ll use my iPad first).
I have fallen out of NanoStudio and honestly feel BM3 has been lying comatose for a while now but whenever I want to sample or make a trap style beat I’ll generally start there.

I wish there was an iOS version of Ableton. I don’t get along with purely linear DAWs. Beatmaker is the closest to that workflow, but it’s far too unstable 🙄 Keeps crashing and then I have to redo everything from the last save point. With the last track I made in Beatmaker I had 3 crashes in an hour and got fed up, so I exported what I had done so far and finished it in Ableton. Infuriating! AUM is cool, but like you said elsewhere, it’s not a proper DAW, so complex arrangements get difficult too.

I tried all of these apps. None of them sticks to me so far, except gadget maybe somewhat. But usually I just load AUM and have my Deluge sequence the iPad. Because all of them have grids in the end and the combination of grids and touch screens is just wrong, even the nice grid of NanoStudio still feels wrong to me. On the Deluge the grids consist of actual buttons that you can feel, and you hardly ever click the wrong one. So AUM is my way, but recently i started using gadgets from the Deluge as well, and that is nice too because the gadgets have such unique and playful characters.

The lack of time signature/tempo change in Cubasis I found limiting, the lack of audio in NS2 is frustrating, the gadgets in Korg Gadget are stripped down versions of the synths models that I bought I can't get the same patches in Gadget that are in the stand alone version this was very disappointing to discover afterwards. I have the same feeling towards beatmaker as you did about the hardware, I don't get the workflow and it is not musical to me. I also got Auria Pro which has audio tracks, and tempo/time signature change but the sequencing is clunky

  • @bitegoatie
    @bitegoatie 4 роки тому

I use all of these and a few of others besides. I cannot justify it. Pointing out the storage space, money, and discontinuity issues with my way of doing things makes no impression on me. I'm happy to call it an illness, but it is not that so much as an appreciation of difference, of alternate takes on the creative process. Each brings something personally worthwhile or it sinks into disuse and sometimes gets unloaded.
I can say my view of the strengths of these apps overlaps with yours (though maybe we differ on connection and format options in NS . . .), even if my associations of the apps with given musical styles branch off. You highlight some of the things I would about why these apps deserve attention.
I should mention that I am annoyed about Steinberg's Cubasis 3 release and their choice to blame Apple for declining to offer even minimally discounted upgrade pricing to existing users. That and the widely discussed plague of bugs that infested the new app (QA? - that's what paying customers are for, silly human).
Also, BM has been in a reduced rotation here because of its old file-management issues. The whole Apple mobile platform sucks for file management, yet somehow BM is worse still, with duplication and eventual confusion baked into way BM saves and groups things. Whenever I think of going into BM, all I have to do to dissuade myself is to remember saving or reusing projects or parts of projects in the app. That will usually put me off my pad for at least an hour.
Probably it is just me. Usually it is just me, whatever the subject. That's okay.
Thanks for all this stuff, Jakob.

    Questions:
    1. Do you export the MIDI, or just the audio for these apps?
    2. Do you make use of Ableton as well? Nutrix made a video about how he uses Gadget and Auria.
    3. Cubasis 2 or 3?
    4. Would you consider AUM as another component? Henny made a video and mentioned AUM and Cubasis, along with Garageband.

    • @JakobHaq

      1. Only Audio (I’ve exported MIDI from Cubasis to use in other apps though).
      2. I Haven’t used desktop or laptop computers for music production since switched to iOS 6-7 years ago.
      3. As for now Cubasis 2 but only for the reasons I mentioned at: 7:41. Otherwise I’d say 3.
      4. I only use AUM as a Live performance and Jamming platform. I’d rather not do any other types of intricate setups with other apps.

I can totally see Cubasis (or even Auria) as a final destination for every project, and often the main program. But one thing that really slows me down inspirationally is the whole timeline linear project mode. I grew up musically with it from the beginning. But do you ever create all of your loops in say AUM, and the export to Cubasis for final sequencing? I’m really liking how many ways there are to approach music making on iOS/iPad OS that are not available on the desktop. I’m even of the opinion now that if someone is a producer and they are not using an iPad, I’m not sure I’d want to work with them. For mixing and mastering i get using the standard multitrack timeline structure, but for creation to only use that seems extremely limited at this point.
Back to AUM. With AUv3 multi-routing and live mutating sequencing and control, it’s blowing up my head. Inspiration just pours out and out, and I don’t feel like I have to plan the movement in a timeline and be dragged down by all the structure. Again, I don’t think I can use it to finish a project, but for actual experimentation and sound creation, something like Cubasis feels like a brick wall in comparison! I know it’s not technically a “DAW” in the traditional sense, but I’d kinda hate for people to get in the trap of thinking to be “pro”, a DAW is the real thing and AUM isn’t.
Also, I do really hope Auria gets a real iPad OS update with all the new bells and whistles. It still feels the most like Logic and Pro Tools. If Rim can get this majorly updated I could see it even possibly overtaking Cubasis as the DAW of choice for many. And that’s good. I don’t like the idea that there’s only 1 real full featured DAW. People get lazy then.
Thanks Jakob! Always good to hear your perspective!

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  4 роки тому +1

I also grew up with timeline editing windows and for me it’s hard to finish any; projects without it. I think I’m just very used to using them. It’s like second nature. But that doesn’t mean that I limit myself to those types of apps.
      .
I do mostly use AUM as a live performance tool. But I also use it for experimentation. I’ve many times ended up with creative experimental sessions where I’ve recorded loops for use in Cubasis. I need those types of sessions too. Sessions where unexpected stuff happens. 👊🏼😉

I choose the DAW (or lack thereof) based on the workflow of the project. Basically, DAW is the last thing I consider. I start with the idea, the sounds, the textures, etc, and use the DAW that gets in the way the least.

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril 4 роки тому

I’ll add (because Jakob hearted my comment) that my goal is to work in iPadOS for ease of sound creation and some editing that digital just makes easier, but (once it’s cleaned up and repaired) bounce everything down to a tascam tape portastudio. More and more I realize I’m an instrument kinda guy, not a computer kinda guy. The iPad so far (as much as I fucking hate Apple as a company and loathe giving them any money) is the device that does the most computing while also getting in my way the least.
With some of the iOS-only things out there (like Switcher Studio- expensive but pretty dope) I’m even considering putting an Apple device in my pocket again so I can more easily collaborate with the music people I know who are all primarily in the Apple ecosystem. With Covid destroying many of their livelihoods, a helper with a subscription to Switcher and a room full of iOS devices can become an incredible production.

Killer-feature: multitrack MIDI tracks for one output source in Xequence, multioutputs in AUM.
    - GarageBand
My always on-go app. I always start with it, then move to one of the DAW if needed. The app have so many nice little features, so I learn something new every time. Worth mention largest community, which made something amazing sometimes with it.
    Killer-feature: interactive drummers and loops.
    - BeatMaker 3:
I think it's most flexible DAW on the iOS market. It just works!
    Killer-feature: amazing sampler/chopper.
    - Korg Gadget 2:
Try it several times and I was struggle with wish to bought their synths on the sale week, but man, it 2020 and no AUM support? Especially for the price they want for DAW's extensions pack and synths? Don't want to play this games, so strong "no".
    Killer-feature: Korg's greed.
    - Auria Pro
I know probably nothing about it, but it have own auditory. Listen that it very good for final mixing, so it goes with builtin plugins. I would like to listen Jakob thoughts, but he said that don't like it so much.

I used to love the iPad. Started out in 2014 on the ipad but now invested in a MacBook Pro and ableton. Much smoother and powerful but my roots are in Auria and Cubasis. Getting back to IPad is very creative and liberating even now. But I find myself in front of ableton 90 percent. Just on another level. More power to the loyal iPad musicians.

I use Cubasis exclusively. I like 3, but I'm missing the transparency of clips on the timeline, where you can see audio and MIDI underneath subsequent clips. I used that facility a lot for crossfading, but now I must use an extra track. Also BUG ALERT - audio fades on the clip on the time line are only registered if you play BEFORE the clip starts. C2 used to allow you to adjust clip volume on the fly. Again, this can be solved by using multiple tracks, but in a complex edit that's not really feasible.
I don't use Gadget, because the simplistic looping nature of the thing just bugs me. Fine if you wanna make the same brainless EDM as everyone else, but I like my music to be more organic and less rigid. Too many multiples of 4!

Cubasis is the gold standard, all roads lead me to Cubasis, but, and I don't really know why, I love Korg Gadget Pro!! Other apps must be good or very good, and I'm not talking about BeatMaker or NanoStudio but about Auria Pro or IK's, but I consider them too expensive to NOT BE Cubasis 😆😆
However it is also true that Korg Gadget Pro with all its IAPs is the most expensive of all, but I already said it: I love the Korg Gadget Pro, and I love the Korg Module Pro, and the Korg M1, all my midi controllers are Korg, my arranger is a Korg, even my metronome and tuner are Korg!!Anyway...Great job!! Another great video, Jakob. IMO Beat Maker 2 had a great MIDI editing interface. When 3 came out I was looking forward to using it...but it was removed. There are a few important modifications Intua could make to make the use of BM3 much more efficient but honestly, I get the feeling no one is really listening. In the sample editor you can not select different layers in the layer stack on the left and have them become active in the editor, you have to mute all but the one you need to hear-very unfinished. The stop button could be single press return to last position and double press return to start. The MIDI editing tools do not perform as expected, zoom behaves in an odd fashion, the finger tool places notes as does the two other note placement tools-the finger tool should be navigation with maybe a long press to change to selection box. Or the BEST option...bring back BM2 editing tools. Thanks for another great video!

Great video! It clearly shows the strengths and weaknesses of each app!
I have been recording and mixing my music - mostly acoustic jazz - in Cubasis for some years now and what I really like about this app is the workflow and the possibilities for editing audio tracks. For me, everything is organized very well and works simply like I would expect it. However, when I started producing some electronic music a few months ago it didn't take more than one week until the absence of a sidechain function and a convenient sampler made me switch to Beatmaker 3 which I had already installed earlier. As I had never used it before, I struggled a lot in the beginning. It is so different from Cubasis! The sampler is just brilliant, though, and gradually, I started to understand how everything works. I realized that this app is exactly what I was looking for because not only the sampler is great but all the other options for working with midi tracks and effects, too.
Therefore, what I really like about this video is the point that every of the four DAWs is your favorite one but for a specific purpose.

I find it that different apps/tools inspire me in different ways. Sometimes there is more than one option that is the right one for you. As an old analogue synth head dating back to 1981 I found this very informative even though I had Cubase v1.0 on Atari ST, used beatmaker & nanostudio about 8 years ago and still use Gadget iOS. Finding GarageBand iOS pretty useable these days. My fav DAW was FL Studio v2.0 with audio from 2011/12. (not ver 3.0, didn’t like interface or look) Wrote some powerful stuff on FL Studio v2.0. Still have it on an iPad2. Keep up the great work Jacob. Love your vids.

5:17 - I’m lying in bed watching this video, and it’s a very well thought out and put together video by the way, and I just HAD TO STOP and LET YOU KNOW how grateful I am that you took the care to make a decisive point in the video to put your advert break in. It’s SO IRRITATING when the adverts just suddenly come on and interrupt the content in the middle of a sentence, and since I watch a lot of technical content that’s even more frustrating, and since a lot of it is in the field of audio or video production, I feel like the content creators should know better and make more effort to make that less frustrating.
So THANK YOU for doing that so well.

I totally get where you are coming from Jacob. I have had this same conversation about macOS apps over the years. I started in windows back in 95, using a cracked version of acid Pro. Into thousand four, I got my first copy of Ableton's version 4. And 05, I picked up a copy of reason. In 2011, I started working with ProTools because I was working in audio post production. I continued to work with Ableton, and reason. This confused friends. But for me it made sense. Reason, it was great for putting together a quick pop and hip-hop tracks. Ableton, Is more of a creative pallet, for experimental sound design. ProTools, I was using strictly for sound to picture. No longer work with ProTools, because I got out of Hollywood, and when I look at a ProTools session I have anxiety attacks LOL, only half kidding.

I‘m having huge problems with Cubasis 3. I posted in Steinberg‘s forum yesterday. Sometimes Midi notes aren‘t played, sometimes midi-instruments sound completely different from what they should sound and I have to restart the iPad .... Things like this have never happened in Cubasis 2.

Yeah I found similar bugs over here. But I’ve actually had weird MIDI/keyboard bugs happening in all versions of Cubasis. There was one bug that only happened with some AUv3s in Cubasis 2 where I got lag or no notes when playing the internal keyboard unless I had the App window up too. It disappears after a few updates.

Cubasis2 FOREVER, until a bunch of my projects somehow F*CKT uP
BM3 is a great DAW as well, although, personally, not great workflow. Still phenomenal...
NS3 wasn’t as great as I anticipated with a few missing features that force me to export into the big league daw’s.
The CooLesT thing about NaNo is iPhone compatibility, which I believe Cubasis 3 is now equipped with,
but I can’t afford to purchase it again, @ the moment.

No horrors. I’ve actually talked about this on my live-streams but I’ve never been bold enough to make a video on why I don’t use Auria or Garageband. They’re both very competent apps, Auria in particular is really good. But both apps have this one issue ... I simply do not like their interface. For the past 5-6 years I’ve gone back to these apps several times, testing them out, doing work inside them and I never enjoy it. I’m always fighting their interface and so it just does not work out. To put it in simpler words, their interfaces do not “click” with me. I hope that answers your question. 😅

@@JakobHaq Agreed!?! The interface is incredibly critical to the individuals workflow. Each with PRO's & CON's.
Except Garageband, which seems limited but decent as a FREE beginners app. The symphonic instruments sound great but I wouldn't advocate it to serious DAW users.
Keep up the great work!?! I LOVE IT!?
I'd really like to see more of your DIY projects. Or, more BEAUTIFUL landscape footage. Regardless, whatever you decide for future endeavors will surely be inspiring. Thats why your such an admirable creative!?!

(I was thinking Cubasis but I see it doesn’t have Ableton link, so I guess the song wouldn’t be cut up into measures automatically based on BPM, making it much more annoying to cut out parts precisely etc. So maybe Beatmaker 3?)
