Thank you, Jakob, for helping me and so many others for educating and encouraging us to think creatively about music creation, production, and sound design.
I went through my apps and realize that I have the OG GeoSynth and not GeoShred. Looking at the price point, shaking my head slowly but still tempted… :)
It was a great time to have my first Apple product, a brand new 2012 iPad, filled with FREE apps! The most I paid was about $3.50. I was working for Microsoft from my Seattle apartment, watching iPad Today with Leo Laporte and Sarah Lane. What a great time!
THANK YOU AGAIN! Watching now. Your insights always give me interesting perspectives on these tools. Drambo was literally a game changer for me and changed the way I look at Ableton.
‘ MUTANT ‘ by Mazetool is one of my favourite touch apps , for jamming, creating loops to resample , and just sound mangling its own sound engine and environments.
Congratulations on your first decade. Great overview of a selection of touch screen instruments. Samplr is the benchmark one I think. Best put the lid back on the can and shoo the elephant out with the broom.
Happy 10th UA-cam Anniversary, Jakob! 🎉. Subbed for years, and always enjoy your content. This video puts another couple of apps on my wishlist/purchase list! 😮😂
Thanks for this. I do have boderlands bjt i haven’t used enough. After watching this video I will for sure. My favorite one is Spacecraft. Playing with that is at bit like a singing bowl meditation.
You are so correct Mela comes to mind, I bought it all and it’s amazing, the FX series of Enentide and 4 pockets, etc…! I bought an IPad Pro M2 and have barely used it! Mainly because I have smaller IPads with the same abilities. To plan , unfortunately my health hasn’t been holding up, but I have bought a 24 track Tascam their flagship to reverse engineer my stuff. I equipment wise am totally ready to start UA-cam channels! I’m so close I can’t taste it! Thank you for the video I always enjoy your videos!
Very much enjoy your iOS music app tutorials. Could I ask a quick question? If I actually want to extract the best quality audio is the head phone jack digital to analog converter the best I can do? Or do you use some sort of audio interface?appreciate your advice
Huh, that was a loooong video, but worth every second! You’ve nailed it. For some of the apps even a dedicated old iPad would be worth. Still much cheaper than any synth manufacture can do. And congrats for your 10th ani. Love your format and the selection of topics. Thank you for not quitting YT 🤣
Congratulations on having your channel for 10 years really enjoyed the shows. Thank you. Trying to find the discord link, but I’m having trouble finding it !?
My favorites so far Audio share launch pad. Lots of fun mood, Scaper pianoscaper, funk box, drum machine, thing, nature scapes for background sounds I don’t know about subscribing to this logic pro thing but I have logic on my i Mac Jazz session apps Keep up the great work. Thanks a lot ROBERT. Fields
Jakob, thanks for this excellent walkthrough and commentary on these apps. Every one of these apps is so beautifully crafted and inspire creativity. From about 17:10-17:30, how did you get multiple instances/windows? Best to you, and thanks from all of us for your tutorials, insights, opinions, and endless, positive, encouraging, fun personality. 😀
I have Touchscaper and I'm thinking it might work great with my Roland Aerophone Mini wind controller. I use Korg Nanokey Studio to make chord progressions to play the Aerophone over, so, given Touchscaper's usefulness in creating chord progressions, I think it might also work well with the Aerophone.
Fantastic. Saw some of my favorite apps in there and some new ones I need to try! I'm amazed at the creativity and innovation that the developers brought to the iPad/iPhone 10 years ago or more. Inspiring and fun! 👍
Regarding motion recording … I made a video just for you. Don’t know which service you’re using if any. But I put it on Instagram: instagram.com/reel/C49FvXgNPuj/?igsh=MTV5cmFzaDNwbzFmbw== I also put it on Twitter: x.com/jakob_haq/status/1772396094086881578?s=46
what I liked was the apps, Where are you put in a mathematical formula and out pops a sound. what it's doing is it's actually generating the waveform from the math operation using time T as a driving parameter then sending that through some operations all they need is some way of adding some functions and then using something to add those functions dynamically you could generate something that's a little bit like an analog synthesizer, but it's all digital and uses math instead of modules.
TC Data was a play on TC 11 but with midi out capability which was pretty far out for its time. Love using that sometimes pairing it up with UVI Falcon.
Jakob I am attempting to configure an iPad to enable it to output 2 separate audio streams (narration files - one in English, one in Spanish). Based on my research this appear like it is doable- however I cant determine precisely what I need to put together as far as hardware & apps. It looks like an app like AUM could be the software piece, but I am confused as to what type of hardware (interface box, etc. etc.) Thanks in advance for the help, E. Davidson
With AUM you can set this up with two channels playing one stream each, panned left and right. Then use a jack-phono cable from your ipad, and presto you have two separate channels.
Wow Jakob, what a treat is your celebration of the original brilliant apps that still rule! And great tip to feed a live radio feed into Borderlands, going to experiment with that! Soniface by Mazetools comes to mind! A much underrated and very deep and capable sound design environment . Keep up the great work and inspiration!👏👏👏
Thanks for showing us those pure gems, Jakob! 👍 My favourite is Lemur, however it doesn't fit into this list, since in fact it's just a touchscreen midi/osc controller with bunch of incredible templates, especially for Reaktor ❤ Unfortunately it's been discontinued just like many other iOS music apps 😢
Thanks for all your great videos and this nice retrospective. Music is about creativity. I also have the feeling, that some of the older apps are more musical instruments, than a lot of the new AUv3 plugin tools, that look like desktop vst plugins without any touch device benefit. Very often these AUv3 plugins miss the fun and musical instrument factor the old iOS music apps offered
You’re describing the way I feel about this too. Even the marketing of the platform has changed he and it’s now being sold as a laptop replacement that you use external monitors, mouse and keyboard with. I get the pencil, but the rest I’d rather do without. I much more prefer when apps take the touch screen into consideration.
Did you just say Touchscraper at 24:47 ? lol I do it all the time. Anyway wicked video. One thing I was hoping you'd mention that if one also has a MAC they can simply connect these amazing touch apps to their MAC DAW with one simple wire connection right? Congrats on 10 years!
Yes, 😂 I keep doin that mistake. - Regarding the wire connection, I’ve been planning on making a specific video on the topic of IDAM for some time. Worked on the script for about 6 years I think. I just need to borrow a newer MacBook to do some final tests. 👍
Thanks for another great video, Jakob, and for 10 years of informative and entertaining content. As for touch stuff, I'm constantly using Geoshred and Borderlands, and sometimes SpaceCraft. I have the TC apps, but found it difficult to create setups that fit into my musical style. I also really love Samplr, but don't use it nearly as much.
Thank you so much for the support all these years! And I hear you about TC stuffs they are among the absolute best ones when it comes to this stuff, but they have that steep curve due to their complexity. I mean, I think the dev has done a great job with the interfaces. But it’s the depth of the apps that makes it hard to work with them. They can be time consuming to set up and sometimes hard to get the results you seek.
I like the *idea* of touchscreen instruments. I just haven’t yet found one that is compelling for *me*. The screenboards have come closest, but none of them has been able to hold my interest. At most, on-screen keyboards and screenboards are just things I use to capture scratch versions of ideas when I don’t have a MIDI controller or other instrument handy. On the AUv3 topic, I’ll consider an app that doesn’t support it. And there are some apps that arguably don’t make sense as an audio unit. But, generally, if an app today has support for IAA but not AUv3, that tells me something about the developer that doesn’t encourage me to do business with them. And (maybe thanks to not being into any of the touch instruments) there’s almost always an alternative audio unit to use instead.
Bebot does actually have a rather robust synth and the little guy can really belt it out! Also GeoShred has a very nice trombone, which I used in my “Suite for cello loops and bass trombone, with birds.” Here’s a link: ua-cam.com/video/hcZP5MLqPgw/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I like your way of thinking! However in my case tho I think the workflow is terrible with Ipads. The way of turning knobs, mixing and doing heavy detailed work is so off putting.. It is very difficult and clumsy in that case. The laptop is way more flexible with all the VST's etc.. Peace!
Just give me soMe GOT DAMN transport controls!!!! Imma bout to bail iOS after last update. Won’t matter how much development we’ve been doing this shit almost 20 years.
Hey Jakob! I'm trying to leave a rather substantial comment regarding your video but for some reason my comment is getting shadow banned despite the fact that there is nothing inappropriate about my comment... I can clearly see that my comment was posted when I look at your video while I'm logged in my own account, but when I try to access your video page from another browser, my comment is nowhere to be found, any ideas?
I’m getting very frustrated with UA-cam. You are not the first that tell me this is the case when leaving comments. The problem is that I can’t see your comment anywhere. As a channel owners we used to have a special tab in the UA-cam studio comments section where we could look at comments that are “on hold awaiting examination”. It used to be filled with comments, but now it’s empty so I can’t see if your comment is there. . I’m sorry this is happening but I can’t do anything about it. UA-cam hides stuff and we just have to deal with it. I don’t know if you use discord or any other social platform I’m on (links In pinned comment). But if you are, leave the post on any of them. I’ll try to bring this shadow banning stuff up in a future video.
@@JakobHaqI'll try sharing it as a reply here over multiple comments and modify any words that might be misinterpreted in the wrong context. Let's see what happens :D
Some apps explore unique concepts (Borderlands Granular in particular). From my perspective though they often come with a degree of distraction (or you could see it as an "emphasis on the visuals") that I find overwhelming to the point where it discourages me from wanting to explore them.
My focus is more on curating optimized/low friction tools to make music, rather than chasing purely playful exploratory concepts, even though I completely recognize their great potential to be fascinating and fun on their own.
I have the utmost respect for those who might use these apps, however for me, I think I would equally, if I had the means, like to bring A cement mixer into the studio, insert mics, instruments, mud and broken glass, run the thing and go to the pub and come home to see what I’ve created…. Other opinions are available. 👈😎👉
Well, I think you should distinguish between instruments used by controllers, i.e. "musicians" who do not know how to play a musical instrument, and instruments that can be used by musicians with a musical and instrumental background. It is not the same to use, for example, Photoshop, which requires training, than a photo filter program that can be used by a three year old child.
I’m not so sure there’s that big a distinction. I don’t consider myself a musician, and I am a worse keyboard player than Jakob Haq, but I can make music in Logic Pro on my iPad, which actual musicians can also use as it’s a full DAW. I don’t play anything live, and I make extensive use of scales, chord strips, and so on to help keep me from playing bad notes, and edit mode to fix the ones that slip through. Musicians who can actually play their instruments have less need for those crutches, but they are there for people like me. I would love to see some of these as plugins that give new playing surfaces, rather than new sounds. I don’t know if that’s possible, though. This all said, I do think there is a difference between something like Borderlands, which is so different from a typical musical instrument that plays a sequence of notes, and something like a screenboard or gesture instrument that *does* play notes but just input in a different way. Maybe what we need is a plugin architecture like AUv3 but for note input rather than note output.
@@jasonlescalleet5611 The difference is the concept, an instrument to play what you want, what you develope, to realize your ideas, and an app that may sound good or not, and get results without a previa idea of what you want. It is like to use Photoshop to realize an idea, where you have to learn and think and consecuently you make progress, and a filter app with funny results to play (game) that you do not "grow" getting better in your skills...

This was awesome!
Happy ten years Jakob!
Thank you for still being here! 🤍
Ten years?! Wow. Happy anniversary, Mr H.
I owe it to my audience that keep coming back, even if I take more time to finish up videos. So thank you!
YES! YES! YES! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 Thank you Jakob!
You are welcome! And thank you for supporting my work!
Great stuff bro congrats on ten years🥳🤩🤗
Thank you for still being here! 🥰
Thanks for going the distance with this.
Massive work Jakob! : )
Great vid. How do you use beat surfer in Cubasis….it does record the beats as midi. Confused
Throughout this whole video, I found myself repeatedly asking, "It's been THAT long?!"
Time flies when you’re having fun! 😘
Many fair points!
Love spacecraft 👍
This is 🔥🔥🔥
Congratulations!
Thank you! 🤍
I've been in Ninja training for 9 months, I'm going to finally step towards your Sound System. Try to stop me Mr With A K. ;)

Happy anniversary 🎉

Epic!
Resistance was futile @ 10:12. I am now known as 6 of 9, primary adjunct of unimatrix 420
Note that Geoshred does support AUv3.
I’ve added it to the pinned comment. Not sure how I missed it. 🤍
oh no! another one of these videos, that will cost me 100€ in the end!
I love GeoShred ❤
Bebot does actually have a rather robust synth and the little guy can really belt it out! Also GeoShred has a very nice trombone, which I used in my “Suite for cello loops and bass trombone, with birds.” Here’s a link: ua-cam.com/video/hcZP5MLqPgw/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Happy 10th anniversary!
Thank you!
What about Soniface and Mutant 😅😉
Soniface, that's the one I couldn't remember and I think it's even on my iPad.
❤
I like your way of thinking! However in my case tho I think the workflow is terrible with Ipads. The way of turning knobs, mixing and doing heavy detailed work is so off putting.. It is very difficult and clumsy in that case. The laptop is way more flexible with all the VST's etc.. Peace!
I hear you! In the end what you need and what you can work with is always going to be the best for you. 👍👍👍
@@JakobHaq Yes totally, I like that u can inspire people with this! 💜
Where was the moo? 🐄 ?

Hi Jakob! awesome video quality and congrats on your 10 years milestone! On a side note, Geoshred is AUv3 compatible.

What has two thumbs and bought a few old but gold apps today? 👍👍
Oooh, I know. A “rrrobart19”! 🤍
I have the utmost respect for those who might use these apps, however for me, I think I would equally, if I had the means, like to bring A cement mixer into the studio, insert mics, instruments, mud and broken glass, run the thing and go to the pub and come home to see what I’ve created….
Other opinions are available.

I loved the demo for TC-11 but $25 is a big pill to swallow for an app for me.
7:00 you sharting? 😳🤔
Simple, apps where you can do what you has in your head, and apps that you move things and something happens.

It’s a shame that Borderlands and Samplr are iPad only and not iOS universal.
next update will be iOS universal (or at least that's the plan...) :)
