Wow! She doesn’t look old enough to be clubbing in the 70’s and 80’s! Beautiful jewelry too. The transfers come out clean and so much better than with transfer medium. I’d never seen it in action, thank you!
I began making art using a similar reproduction effect but altogether different way in 1990s Web art era .. the way I approached it was using a scanner instead of a copier (set to black and white or line mode). I scanned all kinds of things, from crumpled up wrapping paper and magazines photos and 3D objects with paper behind. By adjusting the scanner settings and using digital filters I got some really interesting results...after I scanned I would selectively colour in (digitally) parts of the scan, overlay other scans and images with transparency layers or place 3D objects in colour (scanned) onto the black and white backgrounds. With web design (using Flash and javascript) I was able to take the art a stage further and create interactive backdrops where parts of the image would change or sounds would be played with user interaction of the mouse pointer. That was a really fun creative time with many well known but anonymous Web artists all over the world creating stunning pieces every few months. Web artists would acknowledge other artists in their works by putting another artists name and a heart or something as a URL link, or would put challenges to other artists who would then respond with a new work.
Loved this. Took me by surprise how creative one can be with relatively few tools at our disposal, especially the use of the omnipresent Xerox machine. Especially great was the absence of any modern computer work, such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Thank you for this. I failed to mention my thanks to the artist Marlene Weisman.
HA, we did this in school and when I was in the military (graphics) it's also called Turpentine Transfer or solvent transfer. Works really well with color laser copies, as well as color magazine pictures.
This video is such a treat. Wasn’t expecting to come across this charming and informative video. Love your comments on that era. So awesome to reminisce. The underground look. We didn’t know how classic these images would become.
oh god im loving this in the studio series u have to keep it going, i LOVED this tutorial im definetly gonna get this done, u guys should invite illustrators and all types or artists ......... it would be awesome
Nice video I used to do a lot of xerox transfers using Citrasolv (a orange cleaner found in most supermarkets). I was just telling one of my adult printmaking students that it only worked with a carbon toner copy, but we tried it using a laser printer and it worked great. Since I have the use of an etching press I find it transfers better than hand rubbing.
incredible history and awesome clear explanations! I've always wanted to go to art school but never could and this felt like a whole lesson by a pro! :') thank you
I remember those Peppermint Lounge and club posters in the back section of the Village Voice. They were very distinctive. Glad to meet the person who created them. Cheers.
personally, I appreciate the compsition you created in this tutorial. albeit partially complete as you suggested, i enjoy the whimsical nature of the components themselves, and combined with their relationship in the final piece i love the sense of motion that draws the eye into the paper in an almost participatory fashion. well done.
Wonderful! Thanks for offering this technique and inspiration! I was hoping to see how you worked with the gel medium / gesso for transfers, too. Any chance that could be provided somehow?
Thanks Marlene for this great demonstration, I like the rendering with brush, ghost picture into the Andy Warhol's style, but the both are more organic for myself.
This is such a great technique, I'm going to try it right away. But I'm thinking can I do transfer over some color.. if I can what color can I use. Can I use it on acrylic background, watercolors.... color pencils.. anything that gives me some color underneath?
Thanks, very helpful and downright fun. Do you need to spray a fixative over the work after you are finished? Or is the toner permanently fixed to the paper after the transfer?
Thank You for the GREAT video. Can someone suggest the model of a *** NEW - Xerox / Copy Machine *** that will work for this process ? I have contacted many major copy machine manufactures - but NO ONE can break down the toner chemical ingredients. Wondering if this process needs a a toner that uses allot of Carbon versus plastic.
Hi there. Marlene was amazing in this video. Loved the throwback to 80s NYC and the music club scene. I could imagine all of it like I was right there. And lover nyc accent, vibe and down-to-earth friendliness. (And those rings!! Omg. I love those rings.). She’s definitely cool from the inside out :). I actually do have a couple of questions amidst all my gushing 😜. Is it possible to apply this technique with colour prints? I was also confused by the distinction between laser and toner prints as I’ve seen other videos that specify laser prints for use with other transfer mediums like golden products. (Never ink jet, I assume because it would just be a big mess). Am also interested in using this process on canvas so widening if it would work in this way and if one could gesso it ahead of time.) Hope someone can he’ll answer. Thanks and yanks for the great and helpful videos❣️
THANK YOU SOO SOOO MUCH for this video! i always wondered about a quick and affordable way to transfer my sketches:) This has been incredibly helpful. Thank you
I have heard about another transfer technique, but never tried: if you print an image on non-stick paper like baking sheets, you can just press it on the surface you want to transfer to without using chemicals. The resolution might not be as good though.
What type of Xerox Printer do you suggest. I want to buy a new Xerox machine but cannot get data re: carbon content on Toner Cartrages from manufactures.
amazing piece of art. i wonder if its possible for printing on fabric too. can anyone suggest me easy ways to do permanent fabric printing or even writing, please? i tried permanent marker but it bled :/
Where do you find a toner printer? Does any company even make toner printers anymore?? The only thing I see on the market is laser, and I don’t know a copy center that has any, either.
Wow! She doesn’t look old enough to be clubbing in the 70’s and 80’s!
Beautiful jewelry too.

Thank you Mr. Rauschenberg for this great technique
You rocked it Marlene. Thank you for sharing your awesomeness in this simple yet sophisticated form of creative art. Love your ensemble, too. :)
thanks! made it look so easy. Xerox art has always fascinated me, so nice to see how one does it!

This is such an inspiring video. Really well done. Thanks for providing both the history and the techniques to create Xerox posters.
I remember those Peppermint Lounge and club posters in the back section of the Village Voice. They were very distinctive. Glad to meet the person who created them. Cheers.
I loved this! Will watch again!
Very helpful - and some interesting art/cultural history to go along with it! Keep them coming!
Amazing! Thanks. I had no idea about this. Does it work with jet printers? Perhaps another solvent?
Thank you, I love that. Learning to be artsy and having fun.
"This was the punk zine aesthetic!.
I should try this, this is like real life photoshop
great! I'd forgotten about this technique. and enjoying your pins especially Patti Smith PHTP!!
Beautiful art, great
Very affectionate artist passing his knowledge
This is so awesome...you describe the whole "zine" movement

You're a great teacher!
Thank you for sharing your technique. Awesome 👌🏽
Nail polish remover IS acetone.
Great technique & art form 👌👍
wonderful demonstration. Thank you very much, you and your art are beautiful
Wunderbar Marlene !
Wonderful! Thanks for offering this technique and inspiration! I was hoping to see how you worked with the gel medium / gesso for transfers, too. Any chance that could be provided somehow?
Thank you so much. Can't wait to play with the office Xerox!
Thanks Marlene for this great demonstration, I like the rendering with brush, ghost picture into the Andy Warhol's style, but the both are more organic for myself.
what about transfer images on canvas or fabrics instead??
peter gabriel Use acrylic gloss medium for that. Just use it as "glue" and then remove the paper by wetting and scraping once the medium is dry.
Just now I got an idea; to do which i was planning & it could cost me a lot! You saved me! Tnx a lot
really cool! reminds me of the andy warhol line blotting technique but with a different line style
Thank you--I will try this! Also, I LOVE your jacket!
This is such a great technique, I'm going to try it right away. But I'm thinking can I do transfer over some color.. if I can what color can I use. Can I use it on acrylic background, watercolors.... color pencils.. anything that gives me some color underneath?
Love this technique! What would you recommend for fabric transfers. I don’t see hoe the nail polish remover would be a good idea.
So cool! I'm going to try this.
Thanks for sharing your work.
Awesome presentation really enjoyed watching it.
How did she get those images are they photocopied?
Thanks, very helpful and downright fun. Do you need to spray a fixative over the work after you are finished? Or is the toner permanently fixed to the paper after the transfer?
You do not have to spray with a fixative.
Awesome,very nice friend❤️❤️.....
Awesome! I am so going to be playing around with this technique! Bisou ☆
Are all xerox machines created equal? I feel like the one at my library doesn't transfer as well.
Thank You for the GREAT video.

What type of paper are you transferring on?
Gracias por compartir, me encantaron tus accesorios (brazaletes, anillos). Tu chaqueta está genial!!
So inspiring! Thank you!

Wow.. Learned something new✨
Thanks Marlene!
thank you for the video. That's great!
Excellent!
Where am I going to find a Xerox machine
We used rubber cement and waxing machines plus spray glue in those days also
this was awesome
acetone penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. gloves and ventilation is really necessary
I loved that you were wearing a Ray Johnson Bunny Head button, I'll share this video on my job's Facebook page :)
Just curious about what kind of copier you used for creating your source material.
Meltdown grfx maybe xerox lol
THANK YOU SOO SOOO MUCH for this video! i always wondered about a quick and affordable way to transfer my sketches:) This has been incredibly helpful. Thank you
thanks for sharing. will any kind of polish remover work?
Thank you! I plan on trying this. I want to superimpose black and white images on color collage images.
This is cool. Will this work on other materials or only transferring paper to paper? I wonder if it will work on top of sanded resin?
I loved it, thank you !!
I love your jacket!
Can I transfer onto canvas? Must it always be onto paper/art paper?
I have heard about another transfer technique, but never tried: if you print an image on non-stick paper like baking sheets, you can just press it on the surface you want to transfer to without using chemicals. The resolution might not be as good though.
Can this be done on fabric?
That was a great demonstration. What was the dye that you used?
Y si quiero tranferir sobre otro papel...... ese gel sirve o se desmorona el otro papel?
After I do the transfer and let it dry thoroughly, can I cover it with gel medium or Elmer's glue and let that dry and then oil paint over it?
You use hot press paper, can you tell me what brand you prefer?
Excellent
This was GREAT! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
great! I used to do this in the eighties using turpentine; tried it again some years ago but nothing happened, now I know why lol...toner-laser
Could this be transferred onto a piece of glass or plastic?
I tried it with newspaper and it didn't work. is it a different ink?
Thanks, much appreciated
Thank you very much, I am beginning to venture into this technique and this tutorial has been of great help !!
Really inspiring, love it!
Does it work with ink prints?
Thank You
Tony...west hills, ca. usa
This was terrific...thank you so much...

amazing piece of art. i wonder if its possible for printing on fabric too. can anyone suggest me easy ways to do permanent fabric printing or even writing, please? i tried permanent marker but it bled :/

Some laser printers also use toner in their printing process.
Very interesting thanks so much. Happy Holidays.
Great video thank you
VERY NICE!!
This is awesome!!!
You make art fun, and cool. ;-)
Fun!
That's cool
How do you deal with image copyrights?
