    I would define a "cosy" game as one that doesn't require a lot of thought, something you can zone out with, no aspects of horror or extreme skills required - preferably with a heartfelt theme or plot. I can't say no to combat as long as it is simple, because I find games like Minecraft, Rune Factory and Stardew Valley "cosy".

    For me, a cozy game is almost like a fidget toy. I want something stress free that I can sink hours into without putting much thought into it. An easy to follow story, stress free gameplay that allows me to mess up because my focus isn't being demanded. It's about the effort I have to put in.

    I think cozy games should generally be impossible to fail in any meaningful way- enjoy whatever mechanics the game provides at whatever pace suits you, and it won’t create roadblocks for later gameplay. Maybe you won’t progress the storyline and access more mechanics until you progress story quests (or equivalent depending on game type) but it won’t actually create problems

  • @Turbo_Waitress
    @Turbo_Waitress Рік тому +5

    Awesome video. For me personally, cozy describes the vibe of a game, not the genre. So a life sim or slice of life game doesn’t always mean it’s cozy (even though they often are) and what I consider a cozy game isn’t always in the sim genre. I think that conflation is how we end up with lists containing Dead Island 2, etc. For example, BotW is extremely cozy to me and I see it on many cozy game lists. But it’s an adventure or action RPG. However, the freedom of tasks (if I’m having a hard day, I am not forced into the main story and hard bosses and can do fun and breezy side content), the tone of the story (despite being about a world-ending threat, the characters are charming and the world is bright and cheery) among other elements, make it cozy for me. Persona 4 is in a similar boat. While it can be a challenging JRPG, I find the tone, the sidequests and social links, and the freedom of play make for a cozy experience.
    And I think that’s the thing. Everyone is going to have different qualifications for what makes something cozy. I think a distinction is good, but maybe even better is the person making the list laying out their parameters at the beginning of the video like you did here.

    I want to THANK YOU for the discussion you started out on this video with. You brought up such a good point when we were talking on Twitter: content creators have a sense of responsibility to wield their influence well, and that includes how they market games to their audience. Unconventional coziness is completely valid...but there's undoubtedly a marketable definition of "coziness" that our opinions and preferences do not shift. In fact, if I were a game developer of games like CoD or Resident Evil or even certain JRPGs that I adore, I'd be livid to see my game marketed as such because scathing reviews will undoubtedly come in from players who felt they were victims of false advertising. How you phrased this (and the efforts you've already gone to in order to emphasize games with unconventional coziness, like in the collab you mentioned or with the Zelda highlight) hit the nail on the head. I'm sorry for any fire you came under and I hope it didn't hurt your heart - you deserve nothing but accolades for facilitating this conversation with health, integrity, and civility.

    • @MissBubbles

      I just found it weird how some of the creators were defending these behaviours by saying "oh but if it's cozy for the person then why should it matter?". As you said, as a creator you do have a responsibility to be transparent and that is my entire issue here.

  • @imnotdaredevil3714
    @imnotdaredevil3714 Рік тому +1

    for me, I think cozy is the aesthetic we know and love but also I want to focus on cozy as minimal consequence.
    This isn't 100% absolute but I think I approach cozy games with, can I get things wrong? Are there actions I can do that will have long lasting and/or very negative effects on my experience? The obvious one are games where you die, but I'm also adding games that require long term planning or else the experience sucks and it's hard to reverse it. For example, Persona 5 isn't super cozy because besides combat, you have a very finite amount of time to spend building connections or attributes. It's very easy to lock yourself out and hard to make up for missed days. Versus, say, making a mistake in a farm layout or terraforming tends to be easily reversed.
    Another aspect that's hard to quantify are games where I feel like it's easy for me to just jump in. I don't need to commit to a long session or have to try to remember a lot of lore or strategy, I can just jump in easily. Not all short session games (eg roguelikes) are cozy but I think a lot of cozy games have that element.

    I agree with your way of defining a cozy game. I think there should be a clear separation that would keep something like Resident Evil Village or Assassin's Creed: Valhalla out of the category.
    Just for me personally, the ultimate cozy game is a little-known gem called NightSky. I think it's only available on Steam now, but it was also available on 3DS before the 3DS eShop closed. It's an easygoing puzzle game with no enemies, puzzles that aren't too hard, a light jazz soundtrack (so light that it blends into the background), and mood lighting that's basically perpetual dusk.
    No Man's Sky is also a great cozy game. It does have the possibility of combat, but it's far from being a main feature. The game mainly revolves around having you mine for materials, craft things to repair or enhance your spaceship, and travel from one world or solar system to the next (discovering new environments and creatures and interacting with other sentient species along the way).

    cozy is like cooking while you enjoy a bottle of wine and music with your significat other, you dont need to do any effort beyond paying attention. That is different from a game to release stress, for that you do something more action packed. They are both relaxing but evoke differnet emotions, I totallu agree with your position. For me, a cozy game is a game with the following (predominant) elements:
    - A heartwarming atmosphere
    - Easy to pick up and play
    - Relaxing gameplay - not overly demanding, tactical, complex, or punishing
    - Charming, whimsical vibe
    - Easygoing pace
    There are some games that I find relaxing but I would not call them cozy. Diablo 3, for example, is a relaxing game for me but it's not a cozy game by any means. My favorite cozy game? Wylde Flowers. I loved everything about it -- the town, the story, my gramma, the relationships you can build.... 10/10 for me!

    My list of cozy games tend towards farming and building sims: Stardew Valley, My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock, No Place Like Home, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and Magical Melody, Rune Factory, Verdant Skies, Journey, Lake, A Short Hike, Abzu, Unpacking, Spiritfarer, Lil Gator Game, Yoku's Island Express, Cat Cafe Manager, Glitchhikers, Fantasy Life, Moonglow Bay, PowerWash Simulator (with the same caveat you have for House Flipper), and Townscaper. I do think cozy games can be subjective in a way, but I believe they do have common themes, such as farming, crafting, fishing, mining, cooking, decorating, etc. Things most of us find cozy and relaxing. I do agree that people are trying to really expand the genre. But someone also said Dragon Quest Builders 2 is not cozy. You are literally building and decorating. It's truly an underrated game. There are elements of rpg fighting, similar to Rune Factory, but it's not anything too crazy. I urge anyone to check out gameplay if they haven't. I’ve loved the Zelda franchise since I was a little girl, and it definitely has cozy elements, but overall it probably isn’t a cozy game. I always completed the cute easy side quests, whereas my brother would complete the combat/difficult ones. I mean we would also do a bit of both. I absolutely agree that "cozy games" have some distinct features. Dead Rising 2 is one of my personal comfort games, but I know it doesn't belong on a cozy games list. There are some typical elements like farming, cooking, building, designing and relationship mechanics. Free exploration with no or only relaxed combat. Puzzle solving also fits nicely, especially when there's no time limit. An emphasis on atmosphere, characters and story, often with cute or beautiful graphics. Cozy games can be spooky (I mean, Halloween = fall season = coziness intensifies), but it's usually in a more whimsical and fun way. With so many games, you just take a look and instantly know that they fall into the cozy genre (or not).

    There’s definitely a difference between games you find relaxing and games that are ‘cozy’. I may find a game like Hades relaxing and a game like Fire Emblem fun but that doesn’t necessarily make them cozy. To me a cozy game is a game almost anyone can find relaxing such has a farming game, a management game, a visual novel, or a slice of life game. Bonus points if they let your character be in a relationship even if just a friendly one.
    One I found pretty recently is a visual novel called Arcadia Fallen. The story is pretty compelling and while their are some puzzle elements with how the alchemy system works it is used few and far between. It is quite short for the price tag but definitely recommend grabbing it if it’s even on sale. Recently beat it and gonna replay it soon while perusing a different love interest.

    I am part of the problem because I considered Skyrim cozy haha. It's due to the first reason you suggested - I feel relaxed whenever I play it but by definition, I can't really call it cozy in any regard haha. 🙈

  • @75Golgotha
    @75Golgotha Рік тому

    Cozy to me is something first and foremost I don't have to worry about being the "best" at in the game, but I can enjoy and grow with. Sometime it can be an experience, and sometimes it is a farm sim where the repetition is rewarding, but not the only aspect of the game.
    Definitely not shooters/zombies 😅

    I agree with most everyone here of what a cozy game means. Thing is, that still leaves it very broad a term. My husband’s go to cozy game is Madden or MLB the Show. He can play those for hours while listening to UA-cam videos or an audiobook cause he focuses more on transactions, not playing games. But I know most “cozy game” fans would say that is NOT a cozy game because they hate sports and sports games in general. I don’t really think cozy can be a genre because it is so subjective.

  • @cozywanderer

    Yes, I absolutely agree!!! Some games I see on other "cozy" lists and I'm like...HOWWW is this cozy?? 😂😂 Im conflicted about Zelda. Looks like a decent amount of combat but I also have yet to playyy. Curious if any other cozy gamers felt this way at first and then ended up loving it?

    I would say a cozy game in my opinion is one with little to no combat. Specifically optional combat so the player can decide whether or not to pursue that route during gameplay. Sometimes combat an be a great stress reliever. Lol

  • @andraes9684
    @andraes9684 Рік тому

    I agree that cozy games shouldn't be stressful .. It doesn't even have to be combat, but once a game has elements that's too stressful, it stops being cozy for me.. Like diner dash lol.. That being said, I found Dysmantle surpisingly cozy.. You can just avoid the zombies and chunk away at the houses, it even has a relaxing background music.. But of course, you'd eventually have to fight, so maybe "with cozy elements" is a better way to describe it than an actual cozy game...

    Same, I find Hogwarts Legacy and Zeldas to be cozy plays (on easy mode for HL), but I wouldn't call them exactly cozy games at all... Though the Zelda art goes in the cozy category for me :p Your definition suits me well, too!
    Love all those games you mentioned. Lately I played a little game called Lost Nova which was pretty cozy and nice, I don't remember if I've seen it on your channel before, but do give it a try if you have time and want to ^^ It's just 5 or so hours, but you can keep playing after the end of the story, new stuff appears, too, so it's up to you if you wanna 100% it or not haha But it's nice to at least visit it once more after the end, to see the changes!
    Thanks for the vid as always!

    Yeah...some lists I've seen lately of cozy games...don't seem very cozy to me!
    For me (and this is just my view...I don't expect anyone else to follow these!), cozy is wholesome, makes me smile, not much in the way of violence (some mild fantasy violence like Pokemon and top down Zelda Link's Awakening or LoZ Oracle of Ages/Seasons is okay...not first person LoZ of recent). It needs to be kind and gentle! Not dark in tone (dark colors are okay...I mean the feel!) Does it make me feel good? And very little (better if no!) language or mature situations (I'm okay with the minimal dating/marriage mechanics of SoS/HM). Do I feel safe playing the game, mentally and spiritually? Is it triggering? And very little stress!!!
    Cozy games are my jam, they always have been! My views on what's cozy to me may seem a bit out there or strict to some (I don't play anything rated over E10...I'm sensitive to things with a very good memory...and even E10 get a close look over for why it's rated what it's rated), but I know what I like an I know what I enjoy. I don't want to drop money on a game that isn't a good fit with me!
    To quote Taffy from Ooblets..."Cozy loves cozy!"

    I feel like maybe people use “cozy game” because it’s a popular community and rising buzzword? So they want to attract more viewers even though they’re not talking about actual cozy games. Obviously different people will find different games relaxing, but an actual cozy game is a low stress life sim, farming, or matching, organization, good stories, calm vibes. Def not anything with combat or shooting 😅

    cozy games to me are mostly simulation games or games with very easy puzzles because most puzzle heavy games make me irritated and not relaxed. if its an RPG is must have very minimal combat, but i dont really consider most rpgs to be cozy, its not what I'm looking for when i think of cozy games. like, i dont consider zelda a cozy game because i find them to be very difficult and i dont find that relaxing.

    I think “Comfort Game” is a better term for games that relax you, but maybe aren’t “cozy” … like comfort food … Left4Dead2 used to be my relaxation game, before that, Battlefield 2 … some times in there, World of Warcraft was my “knitting” … but I would never call them “cozy” … so yeah, there’s a difference … ACNH is cozy, even when it’s not relaxing, for example. L4D2 is not cozy. Ever.

    Hello 🤗
    Thank you for this video and the discussion 🫶 I agree with you 💯 percentages.
    For me a vizy game is really relax, not to think too much about it, has a good soundtrack and a soft story. It should make feel me rushing or give me the feeling of frustration 😅
    I was wondering myself too since some YT videos say a game is cozy but it isn't it in the forst place. Or the a game is a farming game but it is actually am jrpg with a lot of adventure and battling and with a little farming aspects. Only a farming aspect makes a game cozy when it has a lot of difficult fighting. There a too many games called cozy but they aren't cozy😅 yes, it is a subjective opinion which game is cozy. But please YT keep it simple and don't say Elden Ring or no man's sky is cozy. That's not what the developments want to be for these games🤔.
    I think it is ok to make lists of games even if they aren't cozy and the person who make it is a cozy gamer. They can call it, good games with a cozy aspect or not cozy games which they recommended 😊
    Is this a deal? I would like to hear you opinions🤗
