Looking back at the Bothy Band from this (my, anyway) perspective - Kevin Burke (with whom I was privileged to attend a workshop with in the 90’s) was an excellent fiddler; Paddy Keenan and Matt Molloy: GODS!

I have the impression the even today you will find very few trad flute players, who don't totally worship Mollys playing ;) Funnily, an actually Irish and very accomplished flute/professional flute player, whose family even played with together with Matt Molloy in a Ceilidh Band doesn't like his playing so much. She doesn't like the speed of his playing and that he uses so many crans - because the even older generation of flute players didn't use them.

When my escaped pet rabbit is about to be killed near a ditch at dusk by a sneaking cat I'd want James Galway playing. When my greyhound is flat out and about to turn a hare I'd want Matt Molloy playing...sorted.
Nothing like playing a flute alone, is like a band in itself and combined with the surrounds, no am serious, similar with other wind instruments too, but it's great when you get a certain type of breathy sound on the flute, it's like the wind, you're like with the wind, pretty raw.

J G had a habit of playing a trad tune -on a whistle- after some of his recitals ....to my ear it never worked and he was not a good traditional player; don't think he would have made it at the Fleadh...some things are perhaps better not done at all. .Wonderful classical player in his day.
One of the really funny things about this is that the pianist plays the d minor chord... but J G as he tuning does not play any f natural from that chord ..following with two ds and an a...maybe I have too much wax in my old ears!.anyway he manages fine! This is vintage Galway in his younger days..yes the classical boys do tune ...and also tune the flute within itself...in addition, as they play, they make adjustments by a number of devices.

He played an acoustic guitar on a few tunes in the "Matt Molloy" album actually. It can be hard to distinguish, as he uses the same sort of countermelodies and strumming techniques as he would on the bouzouki.
Ask whom? The usual price of wooden simple-system flute nowadays is around 2500-3500EUR (some of them up to 5000EUR). "Eb" flutes are usually slightly cheaper (concert pitch is "D" flute). I didn't notice big difference in price between old, original, flutes and newly made ones. Except buying old ones is more risky (hidden cracks, leaks and so).
@@kmartyCZ I don't know ..but I suspect Galways flutes could be around 50-100 k sterling. I think the late Albert Cooper made some instruments for him. A fairly decent metal Boehm is around 10k ....as for trad flute prices your figures look about right .
These Galway/Molloy things are really a bit pointless...two quite different musicians really..Galway might not win at the Fleadh while he could play the music ...giving Syrinx to Molloy might not be a great idea either....any views? I would believe though that we trad players can learn a lot from Classical players/teachers.
I don't look at it as a comparison/competition of two flute players. Actually, I usually skip parts where Galway play :-) Since modern, Boehm, flute player typically has to "unlearn" what he learnt when starting to play wooden flute, I am not aware what I can learn from modern player. Maybe there is something to learn, but there are too often ... inapropriate ... things rather than something to learn.
I play a variety of instruments, including the modern (Boehm) flute as well as a traditional flute. I am unaware of anything one has to "unlearn" going one direction or the other. They are simply two different systems of flute, with their own quirks. I have two modern flutes, and they both have difference you have to adjust to every-time you play them... it's the same thing. The big difference here is the style. Irish\traditional\folk music is largely done by ear, while the classical\modern is written. One is not necessarily better than the other, but both have their advantages. When I'm out in the woods around a camp fire with my friends, a modern flute (along with written music) is quite impractical, but if I'm in an orchestra in a formal setting, you bet I want my modern flute and music!
The biggest thing that the Classical\modern flute player has to offer the traditional\Irish\folk crowd would be the discipline and structure of written music... but this doesn't work well in a session ;-). Galway talks about this starting at about 16:00. The result of everything being so precise is that you tend to loose flexibility as a musician... Watch the way Galway has to get tuned up at 21:56. You don't see many folk musicians doing that... if anything they'll just adjust on the fly by rolling the mouthpiece around or changing the embouchure to match the needed note by ear.
Something I noticed During Molloy's playing is his posture... it's atrocious. Notice that Galway is always standing while playing, meanwhile you cut to Molloy... he's all hunched over on his stool. Simply put, better posture means you get more air in your lungs, which allows you to hold out notes longer. I have a hard time playing or singing anything without correct posture, as I will end up short of breath at some point or another, haha. That being said, it doesn't seem to have any impact on Molloy's playing ;-).

Almost all of them trying to play wooden flute with the same embouchure as modern flute which result poor, weird tone.
