    Feeling sorry for my man jugs... Sure we've kinda parted ways but growing up and meeting all kinds of deceiving, nasty little crimps and slopers you realise, he's ALWAYS there for you and usually when you need him the most. It's like going home after a long and exhausting journey, it's warm and welcoming. I mean he's family at this point. That makes him S tier easily IMO :)

      was working on this sloper filled 10.c at my gym, and though I usually climb a few grades higher, I am not very good with slopers. my arms were pumped from all of them. right at the end, there was a jug just before the final move. it felt like fire in the winter, like water in the desert, like light piercing through the darkness. it was a punctuation in the latter half of this climb, a comma which preceded the crescendo. it did not matter how badly I had gripped the previous holds, because there was a big jug at the top, welcoming me with a warm embrace. I love when jugs find themselves in a spot like that, telling you that everything will be alright.

    If you flip this tier list upside down it actually makes a lot of sense

      Yea I think the correct move is to watch it while bat hanging.
      Jokes aside, the tier list feels very random but it was very entertaining to watch nonetheless

    finally someone who agree with me on matt groom!!! -well, kind of at least... I'm often so genuinely annoyed by him that i mute the audio. Charlie Boscoe ftw.

      Yeah he's definitely an acquired taste, and I often wonder how exactly he of all people became the voice of pro climbing... though this most recent competitive season, he was joined by Shauna Coxsey for a brief stretch and that was probably the best IFSC commentating I've ever heard. He just needs to be paired with the right people, which I think IFSC unfortunately has a bit of a shortage of

    Jugs being C tier immediately lost me, but I still enjoyed the whole vid :)

      Yeah, come to think of it, I really think I let my emotions interfere here. Me and Jugs had a pretty big falling out when they got accepted into Harvard and decided not to go to state school with me and the boys like we'd talked about since freshman year... there was a big fight, harsh words were said, and then - radio silence
      Three years later, after not talking for all that time, Jugs gave me a phone call completely out of the blue. We chatted for longer than you might expect, estranged as we were. Apparently, they'd become the president of the Rock Climbing Club at Harvard because they were just so damn likable. I wasn't surprised
      During that phone call, I really felt like I got a glimpse of all the things that made our friendship so strong. They were solid. Supportive. Reliable even in the most difficult terrain. But you know what else I realized? They hadn't changed a bit. The same jokes, the same bad habits... they were even still talking about their date to the sophomore year homecoming, and they were currently in a six-month-long relationship with A New Pair of Scarpa Shoes!
      In that moment, I realized why we'd stopped being friends. It wasn't because there was anything wrong with Jugs, because any sane person who knew them wouldn't be able to deny all the great things about them -- it was what was wrong with me, and with the rest of the people on this crazy world... we grow up. Things lose their magic, and the demands of society make the most vibrant of colors turn gray. The things that once gave us comfort seem dull, and all we really want is something different that can make us FEEL something
      When I got off that phone call, I went over to Chris Sharma's place and snorted an entire bag of Magdust off of a Wide Boyz fiberglass crack volume. I spent the night sulking, wondering why the world was so cruel and unforgiving, but when I woke up, my perspective was renewed. When we lose Jugs, we lose OURSELVES
      That said, I think it's only reasonable for me to change my rating of Jugs to "D" for "Despair"

    You had me until crack climbing. That's an easy S tier, and I'm European. Then Kilter in D and speed in S? This feels like what someone who hasn't climbed before would rate stuff. Rest is fine tho

    • @thatsalexmoore
      @thatsalexmoore  8 місяців тому +1

      You're definitely right, I probably ended up grading crack lower than it deserved because I've never tried with proper technique due to fear - hoping to try soon, though!
      The kilter and speed ratings, on the other hand, were just me trolling. If you had to ask for my non-joking take on them, kilter is probably just below bouldering in A tier and Speed is low C, high D
      I've legit had a grudge against speed since they lumped it in with bouldering and sport climbing at the last Olympics

    • @JonOsterman59
      @JonOsterman59 8 місяців тому

      @@thatsalexmoore Yeah I reckon most people don't get to give it a proper try, but once you get some technique down it feels like cheating. And I'm not even that good at it

      S for "Superior", then A-D like school grades. Basically, the higher up vertically, the better the thing is, and the farther to the left something is in the tier, the better it is for that tier. There are a bunch of other great tier list videos on YT that are way less confusing than this one lol

    im super new to climbing but why are rental shoes so bad

    • @thatsalexmoore
      @thatsalexmoore  8 місяців тому +1

      Welcome to the sport!
      The main reason rental shoes are bad is because they have little to no grip, and so they end up being super slippery. You don't really notice this when you're on easier climbs, but as footholds get smaller and being able to "stick" becomes a lot more important, it becomes quickly apparent that rental shoes just don't cut it for more advanced climbs.
      I think there's also something kind of unnerving about wearing shoes that potentially hundreds of other people have worn...
      Once you really start to take climbing seriously, buying your own pair is definitely worth the investment too since you'll be going so often that it will end up being cheaper than getting rental shoes every time in the long run!
