Hello Tina. Thank you for hosting Katherine and presenting this issue. It deserves to be high priority and before public money supports the NZ Americas Cup entry, or the billions on Auckland's light rail project when there are cheaper options These private and religious aged care facilities have done a wonderful job over the years, and it is so tragic they have been finding they now have to close because the Ministry and our politicians don't seem to care. This has been a gradual train crash, as i remember working alongside the husband of a nurse who ran a private facility. He was working this second job to make ends meet, then, after work supporting his wife in their care home. They were only just making ends meet in this way, and that was.30 years ago.. Good on Katherine, she is just the sort who can get our politicians to wake up.
Katherine Rich - you’re a legend Sadly this government won’t do anything for the aged The Nz health system and aged care future is broken tragically … The crisis in Tauranga is abominable
That was an excellent interview. It is heartbreaking that people are living on the streets or in tiny flats. Our grandmother lived with as part of our multigenerational family just before the nuclear family took over. Many of our friends lived in similar situations. My Mum was one of the youngest in her family but died of cancer just after she turned 70. My grandma lived longer age wise than her children most in their early 70s. Back them there were lots of pensioner flats around with rooms for Gardner's. Those flats have all been taken over and given to younger people and not as well taken care of. Bit by bit they go not to be replaced. We visited her most days but having her own home brought so much pleasure. One of my mother's elderly friends lived there before they were given to younger people. The other options dwindled. Alot of age care facilities have been built in the old home town of Mosgiel and other parts of the Taieri as it's fairly flat out there but mainly for the wealthier clients. It's a big job she has taken on and although I held a different world view than her politically she always put a lot of effort in. Thank you both.
It absolutely disgusting how care homes charge families a flat rate of $50 per day just for elderly members to use the toilet and bathroom That’s on top of the egregious costs of the services and the potential of families losing their houses to mortgage their membership in the care home - disgusting
Old folks homes are cold inhumane money factories charging $1,700 per week for a sardine tin no better than a caged perch the SPCA has condemned as unfit for chooks and had banned as inhumane. Rest homes cry poor not making enough money crocodile tears. Milking the aged is criminal and should be treated as such. Old folks have worked all their lives providing for this and future generations and don't deserve the contempt in which they are treated.
Sadly your comment hits right on the nail. I’m going through this with my 81 year old mum - we need a hospital bed in her home and can not source one. Her current bed kills her back and then sleep deprivation sets in. Tough times for mum.
@@1Ma9iN8tive Good luck in your search for a comfortable bed for your mum i hope she is able to get the healing sleep and comfort she so deserves along with dignity and respectful healthcare delivered by some very kind and understanding carers and staff.
Very valuable interview, thank you Tina Nixon for focusing on this important subject.

We younger ones are here in a great country that our elders worked to create.
They are entitled to aroha and mana and the best care possible.
