Hi Matt, Your minimalist approach to bullet journaling is a breath of fresh air! It's inspiring to see how simplicity can lead to such effectiveness. Thanks for sharing this practical setup, it's a game-changer! 📔✨
I really wanted to make a bullet journal or start journaling consistently for year 2024. However, I always come across with videos of people making cute and artsy journals that I really felt pressured if I could make it our not. I am not really artistic nor I have the materials and ideas to make a nice journal. Coming across your video made me remember the sole reason why I wanted to start making bullet journal.
Amazing, so happy to hear that! Check out the new video that was released today! A Simple, Minimalist Bullet Journal Setup for 2024 ua-cam.com/video/KFBQILmOHIU/v-deo.html
I love this approach--I have avoided bullet journaling because I am not an artist--and for a long time all I would see is flip throughs of these absolutely stunning journals. I felt a bit intimidated. I would start and soon after give up. But what you are showing here is doable for me. Thanks 👍
Great video! I love your take on the minimalist bujo setup. I found the simpler, less “artsy” sections of my previous journals are usually where I’ve been most productive in those goals/other tasks that I’ve set. This is super helpful for those looking to break into bullet journaling.
Just came from another how to to set up your journal vid and they spent the first 5 min talking about the cover and stickers they used. this is much better.
Been using a BJ for 7 years and yours is the first video or blog I've come across that chimes with how it's evolved for me. Great video and oddly reassuring.
Thank you very much for the video! Sometimes bujo can be overwhelming because of all the pinterest ideas that shows pretty and artistic journals and sometimes we lose touch that bujo is for us and it doesn't have to be pretty. I just needs to work for us.
Thank you for the video. At the beginning of my bullet journal journey I also fell down the rabbit hole of what I „have“ to do and include and have an artsy bullet journal. Afterwards I read Ryder Carrolls Book and felt great relief. I do not use my bullet journal for work stuff, because my job is very clear (I handle customers requests, so there is not much to „plan“). I use a monthly log and a „habit tracker“ just like you ´ve shown. And also a line per day for great things today. For my tasks I have a master task list for the month and also a line per day (looks just like the monthly log) where I can fit up to three tasks per day in. These are all personal/household tasks like doing taxes or clean out the freezer - not the things you do everyday anyways like cleaning dishes or stuff...
This is such a beautifully stress free intro to BuJo. You're a Legend! And even the link to the journal is super stress free!! You have a new fan. Happy 2023. Xx
You can make a million functional Bujo vids and I'll watch every one. It's like wading thru sticky syrup to weed out all the "bujo" vids that use not one tenet of RC's methods on social media.
Matt just stumbled on you. I've had real issues with bullet journal. Takes a lot of time. May return to it now that I see your method. May need to rename this asatt Journaling! Bullet journal is more of a fancy scrapbook. God bless

Hi Matt, thanks for this highly-anticipated video 🙂 Besides Ryder Carroll himself, you're still the creator who influences my own BuJo practice the most. So I'm glad you're back 😉
I am looking for the fundamental principles of thought organization. Thank you for getting down to the basics! The og Bujo page with Ryder is informative, but it is so helpful to hear multiple perspectives on the same basic principles.
Great video, and so spot on! I started bullet journalling in August 2022 and am now on my third journal. It's been a game changer to my productivity and my mental space. I keep it simple most of the time but get artsy sometimes. But the simplicity of the minimal method is what helps keep my cluttered mind focused. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, so I look forward to viewing your other videos! Cheers!
i don’t have a very busy life, but i’m on college i need to keep track of dates to do essays and stuff like that, and i like journaling to remember what i did, what i recommend for someone who has a slow life style like me is doing only the future log
Gracious! I was bullet journalling over 40 years ago except it didn't have such an exotic name; it was merely referenced as a day planner system. I guess if self-expression is your thing, then write your calendars, draw your boxes & arrange your columns, then go for it. Bullet journalling probably has benefits for many, but it's certainly not new or inovative. Whatever winds your clock, I guess.
I don’t even use a bullet journal, but I know enough about it from reading the book to know that you don’t know what a bullet journal is. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not a day planner clone
Hello, I saw the video by chance, and I'm so glad I did But I noticed that you haven't posted anything from the last month I hope you are fine And I hope that you will continue to publish because the videos that you make are very beautiful and useful
I love the 1917 leuchtturm. I use it for school and work. Recently just journaling. First page is what each symbol means and then I start the month with a column with symbol, number date, date, and task and hit time. That's it. The next pages are day by day no week organization. My format is 2023 01 20- time: task/ notes.
I finally got my BuJo down to Monthly page, Master To Do with a fold out on my debt payoff, and Daily Log. The only "collection" I use on a regular is my Blood Pressure monitor.
If your anxiety is being scared to mess up such a beautiful permanently bound book... Try the method in a notebook that you used in school 📓 for a while. I used a 3-ring binder. That way if you mess up you can pop that page out, start over and throw it away. Think of it as training wheels. Remember, there's always correction fluid or tape. You can put sticker paper over a mistake or even glue two pages of your bullet journal together to hide mistakes. But truthfully it's fun to look back years from now to see how you've changed your planning style. And remember, unless, you plan on making a video, no one is going to see it... this is not a test! It doesn't have to be perfect! This is just you on paper and everyone has to start somewhere. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷
Don't worry about messing up. It won't make your journal anything less 😁 sometimes we get caught up with aesthetics thay we forget that the most important thing about bujo is functionality and that it functions for you. You'll do great!
@@ezbooknotes , you're absolutely right! But knowing there are ways to fix "mistakes" gives the user the power to relax and enjoy the process. I have anxiety and it took me a long time to use pen instead of pencil. But long term I found pencil smears and I hated that. (Yes, there is a spray to stabilize the graphite, but it's an expense I declined.) So, I decided that correction fluid was more acceptable to me than the lead smears. ... Recently, I glued two pages together to hide a printer error. Something I thought I'd never do, but I leaned on the fact that nobody else will know (until now, lol), it turned out pretty good. Long time planner, Anne Smith recently said in a video that she was going to write down a few things, just to get past the fear of the empty page. For a lot of us planners and even novelists & other writers... the blank page or the blank, brand new notebook can be formidable. But being able to be powerful with techniques makes it easy. 💖🌞🌵😷
Index, key, (optional) daily workflow checklist, future log, (optional) habit tracker, weekly log, (optional) daily log. You don't need the key if you keep it simple. If you experiment with symbols, it helps to keep things straight. The daily workflow checklist keeps me sane by ensuring that I adhere to my routine every day and minimizes rewriting minor, recurring tasks such as checking my calendar, email, etc. Future log handles appointments if I choose not to use a digital calendar for some reason. Supplementing with Google Calendar and reminders makes it easy to keep this uncluttered or unused. Habit tracker. This is optional, but tracking caffeine, sleep, exercise, and other essentials are important for understanding why you are doing well or why you are underperforming. Weekly log. I don't need a daily log if I just check things off of my weekly log. If I need help focusing or reprioritizing, then I use a daily log. I still always pick a daily highlight task, but I don't need a daily log to achieve that. Journaling is important, so a daily log would be good for journaling.
some of us have periods and NEED to make grids in our bullet journals so we can stay healthy... I understand as a man you dont need that, but it's something that can be life changing for us, so we have to take just 20 minutes setting that shit up. it's one of the most useful things i have in my bullet journal. it's literally the only thing ive constantly used and ive been grateful for because of medical visits. I do enjoy making the future layouts and calenders because i use them frequently because i have a job. I also have a gym routine set up, financial tracker, password tracker, monthly habit trackers. all of which i use. I spent hours setting this up once a year and then 20 minutes every month because i just do rolling weeklies. maybe im just more productive or i value my time and energy more... idk. I was hoping for a minimalist journal set up, not a 'you dont actually have to use a bullet journal for anything except writing about your day' video... :(
Thanks for sharing your perspective, and yes as a man there are things I don’t think about. Grids are great for tracking and very useful! I was mainly speaking to the belief they are a must-do for establishing the habit, because I see many new practitioners get stuck there :) Appreciate you sharing!
Hi Matt I ve been trying to bullet journal for last two years i.e 2022 and 2023. The first time I set it up it took six hours and it became a burden task. The second year I tried tweaking it a bit and to only include future log and monthly log while setting f als in different areas of life and using it daily. While I assumed it to be simple yet it needed time to do daily so I used to be all fired up to set up the task for the day with the meetings and then everything's ng fizzed out infact the last quarter of 2023 the monthly segment was badly missed. Now I am trying to use the.minimalistic approach. N that seems less taxing thanks for the same. My question is can we create a master list of all the tasks missed during the last two years and if they still hold relevance use it as a starting point for this year.i liked the weekly n daily setup that u specified esp GAP framework helps me to stay focussed. Also want to know how to prioritise tasks from master list as that's where I struggle. Thanks for your videos n wish you and your family a very happy new year. Looking forward to hear from you soon. Thanks. Sushil
@matt are you still using the index cards? I’ve found having AM down left side and PM to the right gives more space and creates less events/tasks flowing across multiple lines. I’ve also had good experience time blocking rather than the bujo style time lines like you used in your index card video (4 years ago?). I’d recommend anyone who bullet journals or needs a minimalist setup gives this a go.
Hey Matt! Couple questions for you if I may. Firstly, where did you get the “head out of your apps” sticker? I need one!!! Second, do the sharpies bleed through terribly in your notebook? Thanks friend!
Thank you for reminding us that a bullet journal just needs to be functional to use it. What do you do with new appointments? Let's say I have a meeting 2 weeks from now. Initially I log it in my daily log at the moment the meeting is planned and at the end of the day I transfer it to my monthly log, if the appointment occurs this month otherwise it will go to the future log. Every evening I check my monthly log for appointments for the next day. And write them in my daily log for tomorrow. The monthly log gets swamped with meetings quickly this way. How do you handle this?
I am new here and curious about bullet journaling. I have my whole life set up in Asana with everything I need to do. Is there a benefit to organizing tasks/to do lists in the bullet journal versus a digital product?
HELP ME, MATT !! 10:26 I hate my bullet journals , going back to 2000... I draw, I cut and paste magazine pictures, I cut out letters from magazines to make titles, I plaster stamps & stickers everywhere to cover my mistakes...I 2020 I've buy thousands of dollars on different brands of Pencils and sizes... Paint Brush Pens, Fountain pens, and refills Quill and ink sets, calligraphy sets, different ink pens from gel pens, to roller ball point, Stylus pens, felt tips, Markers of every brand available, chisel tips and medium to fine tiped to drawing colored inks and Water Color paint antique to modern sets, boxes ..all filled to the brim with painting supplies.. and a bin filled with hundreds of highlighters, I buy stencils, and endless stickers, & washy tape, and the ink stamp collection has taken over all my storage areas, which have forced me to buy More and more Storage areas, and bins, and organizers... I have a wall to wall shelf , filled with untouched , unopened ...hundreds of Journals.. Lined journals, grid journals, bullet journals, blank page journals, Japanese journals, , art journals, dream journals, travel journals, gratitude journals, garden journals, prepping journals, tracking journals, ranting journals, food & cooking journals, workout journals, reading journals....all waiting for my attention. Success is growing, once you stop growing you are not counted as successful person. it is just my humble opinion. By the way I enjoyed watching your videos, a fellow creator...
For me, it;s infinitely easier and much faster to use a regular A4 monthly planner and a small weekly planner. There's no setup at all, ever. But I will say that whatever kind of planner you use, or how you set up a bullet journal, it is not enough, if you want the best chance at success. Period. Full stop. Every highly successful person I know, and I sure don't know them all, keeps two kinds of regular journal. The first is the kind you would expect. You know, the kind it seems every historical figure of note used, whether politician, businessperson, explorer, or you name it. The second is a large brain dump journal. These very seldom survive history because they get tossed when full, but these is wide mention of them, and I know many, many, many highly successful people who use them today. Many use a digital version, but the vast majority use analog because you can do things with a large paper brain dump journal that are impossible with digital. I still think Clark Kegley does it best, but every system has to be made your own. But he was forty-three journaling videos, and he also has 1.31 million subscribers, so he's doing something right.
I tried bullet journal for 6 months and realized it was taking too much time. I found it was not value add. Was more of a distraction. Went back to combination of electronic and a notebook. No drawing lines entering dates etc. 4:36
Alguien podría por favor resumir lo que dice 😢. Entiendo sólo un poco, me parece interesante. Pero sólo puedo ver la traducción al español en los comentarios.
You went into GAP, then QWMD, and didnt really show or explain either in depth. You just mentioned what the acronyms are, but like what is GAP what is protect? What exactly do you journal Daily in the QWMD? I was looking forward to all of that but you never dove deeper.... :( EDIT: He has more videos in the description going in depth :), sorry!

This video was all I needed. I find big artsy journals very pretty but very intimidating.
Glad you liked it! Artsy bujos are nice but I don’t want people intimidated by them.
If you still enjoy the aesthetic of artsy I would highly recommend stickers and colored highlighters (I personally use the zebra mildliners)!

Thanks for keeping this simple. I came to the same realization after years and years. Now I just do a weekly reflection, weekly tasks, and dailies!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
Amen to it doesn't have to be an art project. I feel that so much. I been doing mine is complete black and white and a few minimal spreads.
You're the reason why i've begun bullet journal 🙏 i love the simplicity and effectiveness in your approach. Thx.

Thanks. Sushil
Hey Matt! Love this! I see you using a Sharpie in your Leuchtturm notebook…do they bleed? Also where did you get thAt awesome sticker about apps?
Did you make the GAP idea? It's pretty cool.
Awesome video!! Where do you get your stickers?
@matt are you still using the index cards? I’ve found having AM down left side and PM to the right gives more space and creates less events/tasks flowing across multiple lines. I’ve also had good experience time blocking rather than the bujo style time lines like you used in your index card video (4 years ago?). I’d recommend anyone who bullet journals or needs a minimalist setup gives this a go.
Hey Matt! Couple questions for you if I may. Firstly, where did you get the “head out of your apps” sticker? I need one!!! Second, do the sharpies bleed through terribly in your notebook? Thanks friend!
Love that red/orange sticker you have. Do you sell it ? thanks
Yes I do! Can you email work at mattragland . com?
Thank you for reminding us that a bullet journal just needs to be functional to use it.
What do you do with new appointments? Let's say I have a meeting 2 weeks from now. Initially I log it in my daily log at the moment the meeting is planned and at the end of the day I transfer it to my monthly log, if the appointment occurs this month otherwise it will go to the future log.
Every evening I check my monthly log for appointments for the next day. And write them in my daily log for tomorrow. The monthly log gets swamped with meetings quickly this way.
How do you handle this?
Tnx for Bujo Series Matt ... I have question When you use GAP method you don't use master task anymore ? or you use both
Newbie to this system and wanted to ask where you purchased your stickers?
Can you recommend some soft bullet journals That are small And do not Tear up real easy
I thought you are Matt D'avelo 🤣🤣🤣
He makes an appearance! Haha.
@@MattRagland you look alike
I am new here and curious about bullet journaling. I have my whole life set up in Asana with everything I need to do. Is there a benefit to organizing tasks/to do lists in the bullet journal versus a digital product?
How do you keep track of future appointments/dates?

Success is growing, once you stop growing you are not counted as successful person. it is just my humble opinion. By the way I enjoyed watching your videos, a fellow creator...
Me, waiting my hundreds of pens and pencils, and also washi tape, glitter, stickers, glue and stamps arrive from shein... 😅🤌
Ah Bullet Journals. The definition of analysis paralysis
How do you what goals you want to set and why?
Alguien podría por favor resumir lo que dice 😢. Entiendo sólo un poco, me parece interesante. Pero sólo puedo ver la traducción al español en los comentarios.
How to use a planner and bullet journal
Rule one of minimalist Bullet Journaling: Buy an A5 notebook. It should not have the words Bullet Journal embossed on the front.
GAP doesn’t apply to some
You went into GAP, then QWMD, and didnt really show or explain either in depth.
You just mentioned what the acronyms are, but like what is GAP what is protect? What exactly do you journal Daily in the QWMD?
I was looking forward to all of that but you never dove deeper.... :(
EDIT: He has more videos in the description going in depth :), sorry!
Whaaaat? You don't use the index?.. I would be literally lost without it.
Other time management systems are better than this.
I agree. I did try this but found it was too much fluff and time waisted.
