I will always rate Hughes the better singer and even though the original singer was Coverdale, and although this live version lacks the true magic of the original, I will always have higher regard for him as a far greater vocalist. Coverdale was great esp in the 70s and I felt he veered away a lot from that classic sound of DP and his two great solo releases in later years in Whitesnake. I personally feel the three albums of the Hughes-Coverdale era were when Purple hit their purple patch. Not to seem too judgemental one must always say that the true magic of the 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' records can only be felt when listened to the original studio recordings. I have never found a live version of the original that does true justice to the incomparable chemistry and jamming of the studio recording. Those are true masterpieces and among my favourite records.

Coverdale is legendary and I am also a great fan of his solo career too, and I think 'Northwinds' must be one of the greatest records he has done. One of the finest examples of blues driven hard rock I must say. I think it is because Hughes has a more prolific solo career and just because I have listened to him more. But Hughes does not do justice here in this song..'
I totally agree with the favourite albums. Burn is my 'phone ringtone. Can't miss a call. The Stormbringer Album is the fastest rock rhythm; you know you're alive!
Hughes' performance on this song is identical to the old Purpple. So, for me, his version is more consistent with the original than the heavier version of WhiteSnacke
