Supposedly Michael McDonald accidentally saw this in a hotel room when it aired the first time. He has said that he was extremely stoned, and got totally confused and disturbed by what he was seeing-really thought it was himself. Wondered if he was having a “psychotic break.” That makes it even more classic
Rick Moranis had a thing for parodying Micheal MacDonald on SCTV. I thought this were hilarious and they still are. They filmed this around and I. The iTV studios in Edmonton. They even have the lobby shots…they did some odd micheal McDonald sketches on the Gary Todd show. Fantastic stuff.
That's hillarious!! one night I was falling asleep during SCTV and caught a bit of 'Crazy hy's' and woke up later to be seeing 'Crazy Joe's drapery and it took me years to differentiate, you mean those were two different entities??! 4650 Landsdowne ave? near Pape?!? they sell TV's and draperies?? My girlfriend and I do this at karaoke. I start singing, while she remains in the audience but near enough the front. With a few seconds to spare, she rushes up, grabs the mic and sings "Such a long way to goooooooo..." Then, she hands me back the mic and takes her seat again.
The funniest part is Rick Moranis says "OK, see ya" in Michael McDonald's singing voice when Michael actually does not sound like that when he's just speaking.
After playing "Peg" by Steely Dan today, a DJ on XM radio said "Yes, that's Michael McDonald you hear in the background of Peg. "Wait, this just in: that's Michael McDonald you hear in the background of EVERY song in the 70s."
Just heard Michael McDonald talking to Rick Beato about this incident where he was too stoned after sharing an extra strong doobie with Patrick Simmons, and accidentally saw this on the tv while lying down in his room. He was confused and thought it was him but couldn't remember doing it. Hilarious to hear him telling the tale.
@@danherring5676It was great. Incredible body of work.. what a life of music. Rick is doing a superb job getting all my 70 80's musicians to put some meat on the fan bone.
@Stream of Consciousness nah, Yacht Rock is a genre. The Doobie Brothers, Christopher Cross, Hall and Oates, Toto, Steely Dan are all examples of that music.
In February 2000, there was a Michael McDonald tribute concert at the Shrine in LA. McDonald performing his solo material and many, many songs with the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins, etc. etc. They played this clip on the video screens by way of introducing Christopher Cross, who came out and did "Ride Like the Wind." I hadn't seen the clip before, but seeing it and then immediately seeing the song live (with M McD coming out to sing those couple of lines) was an experience I'll never forget.
I first laid eyes and ears on Michael McDonald in April 1974, when my wife I attended our first Steely Dan concert at Toledo University where he was a backing vocalist and keyboard player. His voice was a revelation that night and made us life-long fans. When this sketch first aired we laughed and clapped our hands in appreciation of one of the hippest comic insights ever conceived.
Saw Michael McDonald just after he had joined the Doobie Brothers. We were absolutely floored when he started singing. Hearing that raw, soulful, and powerful voice was an incredible experience and the beginning of a life long fan.
Love how when he doesn't quite just get back in the recording booth in time to put the cans on after arguing with the engineer he still mimes the action...
I LOVE Michael's voice. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. He is super nice and kinda shy. My whole family knows his voice because I usually stop everything and turn up the radio when any song comes on with him in lead or backing vocals.
Those of us that have been privy to hearing Michael since the beginning can hear his voice immediately when he's in it even if it's a brand new song. Such a distinctive voice and always a pleasure to hear.
I remember back then, hearing so many songs and thinking, wow that really sounds like Michael McDonald in the background there, long before we knew that certain people would float around and be on other peoples albums, like Steve Lukather use to do! lol
So much more than a backing vocalist. His talent was under-utilized when he was with Steely Dan. So wonderful to watch his career progress over the years.
SCTV had such great musician guests (e.g. the Fishin' Musician), I remember at the time thinking it was great that they got Michael McDonald to do the skit. Up until the last moment when I realized it was Rick.
***** Yes. He has to randomly appear on a rooftop he was nowhere on for half of their music video. :) I love how he just teleports in the Toto video. SURPRISE MICHAEL MCDONALD!

You think that's a brief vocal by McDonald? Check out his ditty in "I got the news" (Steely Dan)..."Broadway duchess, darlin' if you only knew, half as much as everybody thinks you do." That's it. No refrain or repeat. But damn that guy has a voice like no other...
I friggin love that part of the song and always have. I sometimes replay just that part to hear that awesome break! Steely Dan kicks ass. Every song from that era that had MMD as a detail increased the awesomeness of the song 10 fold.
I was hoping they would do a parody using the song "Peg" by Steely Dan. My wife and I have sung the Michael Macdonald backing vocals in that song so many time while driving down the road the past 20 years, haha. We both grew up with the song, listening to Michael McDonald in all his endeavors, but his backing vocals in "Ride like the Wind" and in Peg are worthy of our spoofing, haha.
20 years ago I had a similar coworker named Peg. I was 19-20 at the time and me and my same age coworkers used to sing the song to her when it came on the PA system in the grocery store we worked at, haha.
Hee! Michael McDonald talks here ua-cam.com/video/waIBA6_0GQc/v-deo.html (around 6:30) about how difficult it was getting it recorded to the exacting standards of Fagen and Becker. Have a listen to it deconstructed -- it's great! But to me, one of the most iconic McDonald songs is The Doobie Brothers' "It Keeps You Runnin". I love trying to imitate that. "I know what it means to hide your heart / From a long time ago". (!) ua-cam.com/video/_BsTF22SPyM/v-deo.html
Michael has a true gift. It's like knowing exactly what how and when to say the perfect line. Like on this song, and with On My Own after Patti says "no one said it was easy..." Michael says "but it once was sooo easy..." Perfection.
