How To Properly Tension A Fan Belt For HVAC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2021
- Most techs tension fan belts by feel. In order to tension a belt properly, a belt tensioner should be used to double check. If a belt is too tight, it can put strain on bearings and wear pulleys down. If too loose, the belt can squeel or slip compromising air flow.

Awesome little tool!
Do you have a guide for sheave alignment by any chance? I appreciate your videos, really is helping me alot.
Great tool ! Have been using it for years. I use 24 and 34” rulers to get more accurate reference point and pulley alignment.
Liking it so far
Thanks man
nice tools with good explanation thanks
Thanks Simo!
Nice demo, interesting tool
Thanks brother
Nice
Explained perfectly. I like the app a bit better, I’d also suggest the browning kit comes with tension tool, measure tape, notepad and pulley grove checker in a little bag. 🤘🏻
Thank you, I appreciate it
App? Like for a phone app?
nice method
I think so!
Looks like your fingers are well calibrated. :-)
Hello sir from where i can get that chart ,you used in this video
So we’ve got an issue where it seems a lot of cogged belts are breaking prematurely…I’ve heard that’s because they’re not designed for the torque the RTU units put out but could it be they’re just not being tensioned properly? If that’s the case maybe the solution is using this tool to check proper tension?
the most valuable tool in my arsenal is my handometer.. 😁
Hey man, so you are setting tention as per the tool specs? I know some units require a certain measurement from strait edge under specific lbs of force on belt, but that is as much as 25/30, them detection tools I have looked into only go up to 15/20 lbs. Any insight?
Setting as per the belt size specs, I used a straight line over a strap edge.
you have the tool backward & sighting is different than using an actual straight edge
The tool is definitely not backwards.
Where did you get the tool?

Great for the perfect world... Unfortunately nooobbooddyyyys going to take the time to tension a belt to spec....
Interesting comment because I've talked to a lot of people in thr last 24 hrs that do it for every belt. So yes people are doing this
I agree with Armando on this one. No is given enough time to perform everything properly. For instance, removing adjustable sheave after startup and replacing with a fixed pulley. The details don’t matter anymore when you’re getting charge $150-$180 per hour. Sucks but you get what you pay for sometimes.
Than another company has to come fix it😂 according to york factory nothing comes set, installers must set belts, had 4 new york units flow belts 3 weekss afters start uo
@@karlandersen793 you just compensate for a little belt stretch on startup and call it a day. Never had a belt thrown after startup. Tension is always checked.
Our new daikin equipment and older mquay as well as late 90’s intellepaks come with a browning tag that shows pulley and belt and tension info. We are required to check tension on pms whenever you change a belt. We have had motor failures caused by belt excessive belt tension. I use app from browning. Literally takes less than 10 mins. I guess everybody’s eyes and fingers can see perfect alignments and lbs of correct tension.
