Such a good game, I think it stands confidently alongside 3S. Really wish that 70% completed sequel had come out...
Hey Matt! Loved your Fatal Fury restrospective and it really helped to see what a massive leap this game was compared to it's predecessors. I never really dug Fatal Fury much, I thought it was an odd, somewhat interesting series that produced average games at best but Mark of the Wolves is just incredible. I put it right next to Third Strike as among the best 2D fighters ever made.
Here's to hoping that the guys from lizardcube will have their Garou 2 concept greenlit from SNK....

Garou really is a gem people look over. It’s sprite work is magnificent, the gameplay is amazing and the characters are golden
Marco is still my favorite shoto in any game
I jus don’t think any LCD can do old games justice in the looks department compared to a CRT, and I bought a new 24.1” 1900x1200 LCD for 1600x1200 retro gaming and for 1080p gaming and watching videos, because I have a small desk, and cannot find CRTs without issues with VGA or S-Video and Component.
Garou was always MY 3rd Strike at the time.
When everyone else in my friends group was playing 3rd Strike? I was playing Garou.
I just found this game to be so much better and more enjoyable.
And now that it has beautiful rollback netcode, it reinvigorated my love for the game once again.
Amazing game man, Garou is one of my all time favorites. I can't tell you how many hours i put into this game back on the Dreamcast playing against my brother and our friends. Still play it on Steam semi regularly. The game is an underrated gem. I've personally always liked it more than 3S honestly.
Wish I'd discovered it during the DC era - peak fighting game memories.

Garou is a masterpiece, and it now has rollback on steam. I really believe everyone should play it, it’s legit so so good, and watching top level gameplay of it it’s incredible.
It has Rollback on 360, PS4 and Xbox One
No one plays on PS4. Unless people recently started playing.
I think there are literally two people. I tried recently and saw two names a lot, they’re also the top two ranked with many many more matches and wins than anyone else.

I played the crap out of this game on the Dreamcast unlocking all the characters' real endings.
Justin, the one thing you need to master in the game is Just Defend cancelling into supers. The game is easy to beat once you get the timing down.
Garou is in my top 3 fighting games of all time.

Honorable mentions to KoF98, X-Men v Street Fighter, CvS2, and SvC Chaos. Last Blade 2 is pretty rad too.
Man it's like you stole my list lol. These are some of my all time favorites as well....well minus SvC Chaos and adding Alpha 2 and SamSho 2.
@@orlanzo2621 I really like Alpha 2&3 a lot as well. SamSho is a really good series as well. SvC Chaos is mostly mentioned just because I love the sprites in that game. Imo SNK made the Capcom cast look better than they ever have looked. Game is alright tho, I don't think it's as bad as most say. Violent Ken is a lot of fun to play as.
SvC Chaos is my favorite from those you listed, lol.

You've already fought so many of the broken SNK Bosses, its only fitting.
This is the only SNK boss I actually consider to be fair. Great way to end the franchise.

I love how they just give him infinite T.O.P to make him a threat without just making OP. Wish more bosses did stuff like that.

That mfker gets on my nerves soooo bad, lot's of frustrating times playing FF back in the day hell I still struggle with beating him now 😆
This game is one of those special games for me, it's so good and I still can't understand how SNK managed to get a game that looks this good on the Neo Geo. The only 2D fighter from the 90's that looked better was SF3 and that was on newer hardware.
I think AOF3 looks even better than Garou, and it was made 4 years before the latter. The Neo Geo was a beast.

It’s too bad AOF 3 wasn’t very good.
I will say it was actually possible to beat the CPU. Unlike AOF 2 where the computer is just stupid cheap.
Garou MOTW is the best looking 2d fighter from the 90s even better than SF3 TS and GG XX especially when you consider that it was made on a then aging Neo Geo hardware the animations are amazing.
Same goes for Last Blade 2.
Last Blade 1&2 were up there with 3S & Garou.

This was my first snk game and introduced me to the rest of fatal fury and king of fighters. Man I love this game to death
Dis game is probably one of the best arcade games out there, yet it's underrated.
The thing that hooked me up about this game was it's characters, graphics and the gameplay, all the characters have a really good story of their own, also there sprites and animation are FANTASTIC, the gameplay is really simple yet it's really fun, that's all that i like about this game, this game is MASTERPIECE!
This is the game that got all of my friends into fighting games. It’s like anyone who plays this game is blessed to love the genre.

being on the verge of death and then just defending someones chip out super, and getting like 40% health back, and winning? That's a good feeling :D
I pick this over any Street Fighter any day even 3rd strike
In Fightcade 2, there is a good community: not very big, but solid, 50-70 stable players.
There are great players in North America: WitheGriffith (USA, only Rank S!!!!), Jean Carlo Pichi (MX), Lodley (USA), Kaine_Ai (MX), Dui (USA), Magnus (MX), Dagger (USA), and several others.
I recommend playing against any of them so that they understand the technical depth that can be reached in this game.
I hope you can give it a try.
PD: I want to mention other Latin American players, in case you want to challenge them: Edansaga (CL), Morkman_Freeman (ARG), Crooked (ARG), Master Drawa (CL), Kusnohood Batto (PR), Heavy Daze (ARG), Loose Genius (PR ).
This game is definitely one of my favorite fighting games of all time. Even though Rock isn't very good I still love playing him in this game. In my opinion this game was more than a worthy competitor to third strike
Mark of the wolf was awesome. Just defend was not perfect but still fun and easier than third strike parries. Nearly every characters were great and fun. Not many fighting games now are like that
I've always called this the 3rd strike of SNK. The animation....just sublime
Garou: (Fatal Fury) Mark of the Wolves is still a great game nowdays, I hope Justin revisits the game in it's single player as he failed to beat it (as long as the game doesn't let you continue playing after beating Grant, means that you lost in the end), at least this is NOT Kaiser Knuckle were the game is too hard overall. I'm very rusty in this game to play online to be honest, and I doubt I can get on shape anymore (well, maybe with Hotaru I could... but still...).
Edit: what the chat said to you is not 100% true, the part that you have to 1-credit beat everyone including Grant is true, but you need to get at least 750,000 score and average of AAA rank to Miracle (preferable BEFORE getting to fight Grant). Fail on any of those 3 conditions (1-credit run, the score or your average rank is not at least AAA) you lose, Game Over...
Garou's taunt combos is like the most satisfying thing when you pull it off. love this game

Also, where was Uncle Terry? The actual MC, did it Indiana Jones style - Rock MC? Not yet, hold my hat.

Jenet is so charismatic and fun to play! She was my main in KOF XI and I hope she comes as DLC in KOF XV.
This is one of the games that belongs on the Mount Rushmore of fighting games. You gotta show your journey to get to be able to fight Kain!
I don't know why the bonk sound effect you use is so funny, but when combined with the visual edit it cracks me up every time
I really love Garou. Funny thing is I discovered it at random after downloading a Kawaks. Wish I didn't suck at fighting games cause just watching the cancels from competitive players really makes you want to play it on their level.
Also it has the best Terry outfit of all.
This is one of my all-time favourite fighting games and my favourite SNK fg from the 90s the feint cancel combos are amazing to pull off the soundtrack is great and every character is really fun and has a nice theme and their back-story is also nice.
Garou: MOTW alongside Tekken 3 is one of the few games that managed to pull off a time jump succesfully albeit to a less extent.
Funny thing is rock doesn’t even suck. He’s got amazing mix up tools and turtling options. He just has to win neutral more without meter. It’s a common misconception that the bottom 3 are actually bad, they’re just the only characters without a comboable break move so they’re just objectively worse than everyone else despite being B+ tier.
Rock has redeeming qualities but the game people say is everyone can be viable...i don't believe so but y'all can think that I guess.
Freeman objectively sucks for a lot of reasons but can still win if you are just good at reading people and not put yourself in the worst situations.
Tizoc is a mix of things but still can play well from what I've seen in top-level play.
I really love this game, it has cool characters, cool artstyle, and cool mechanic, glad you finally had a chance to check it, now play it again and defeat the secret boss
Something interesting is this game, on the Dreamcast, loaded it's audio in real time for the moves off of the disc. So my friend would go into training mode with the TV turned down and would practice combos, and all I could hear was the clicking of the joystick and the Dreamcast arm seeking quickly every time he did certain moves. The noises really bring back memories ❤️
This game is absolutely amazing. It’s one of the few fighting games where I learned the majority of the case. Favorite characters were Kain, Hotaru, and Jae Hoon. Kain is probably my favorite charge character all time on any game.
Same here Kain is one of my favourite charge characters in fighting games alongside Ash (Kof 11 and Kof 13) and Heidern (Kof 14) his combos are satisfying and JDGC (just defend guard cancel) into schwarze lanze (d~u snkd) is such a great defensive strategy

Graphically the SNK version of 3rd Strike would be Art of Fighting 3 and it came out 2 years before the 1st Street Fighter 3

The sickest game SNK has ever created with the sickest main character design ever; a shame Rock sucks here tho, low HP and his faint cancel paths are useless, but I used him a lot because I simply liked his design, as well as other characters.
Garou is great.
His Shining Kunckle super was great though plus Rock is one of fighing games' greatest design.
Also, hotaru's theme is the goat

If you ever wanted to play 3s, but wished:
1) the parry system wasn't broken
2) there was a guard break in the game
3) normals linking into each other like older sf games existed
4) specials could fadc

Like some other comments said, you have to fight Kain!
You can't lose any rounds, but you also have to take note of the grades and see how they're going to round up. Some sources said that you need above AAA per round, and some said that you need an S average.
I checked on my screenshots and found that getting an S average is more true.
The dirty method that I always use is just to get at least one or two miracles on the first couple of rounds, then try to not get anything below A on the next rounds. Surprisingly works for me, even when I have one record with a B in it.
It's absolutely a AAA average, and you can lose rounds. What matters is getting the grade on the rounds you win. I've fought Kain plenty of times losing rounds. The grade is based off of time left in the round and points scored in the round. So things like life remaining, time remaining, supers used are what matters for the grade.

But I still sort of recommend getting miracles in the first couple of rounds because it's been pretty helpful for me all this while.

Sorry I couldn't do more retries. It's hectic in my university + course rn and I don't want to get too into the game.
At my high school back in 2002 we would play mark of the wolves on lunch. 4 computers had the same emulators and we would do 2 per keyboard. Shit was so fun

By the way if you wanna do a treat to your viewers Gato has counter move Like Guile from SF moonlights kick but is with punch when done it will counter enemies attacks and headbut them into the air, if timed right u can follow up with gatos double circle forward kick (Desperation move)(s) or (p) version. dunno if you would but just wanna leave a fancy move to do to share :D

MotW is one of the GOATs, definitely one of SNK's finest hours. It might well be the best animated hand-drawn sprite game ever. Yes, definitely go for the fight against Kain.
_Garou_ is a masterpiece IMO, and one of the first games I bought for my Switch to make sure I could finally play it whenever I wanted. It has a more "refined, classy" taste to it that really epitomized the late 90's, when companies came into their own mastering what makes a fun fighting game.

Nice video. Have you ever played Real Bout Fatal Fury: Dominated mind?? Besides Mark of the Wolves, it's the only fatal fury game that doesnt have the plane shift system. It also has Final impact and Advance guard. I bring it up because it's a very underrated fighting game and it's actually pretty good.

Was it that unknown regarding the title of this video? This game was way better and more enjoyable than third strike in my opinion. In fact, its one of the best fighters ever made.
