Thank you for explaining everything in all your videos on this. I currently am working on my 70 Johnson 20 hp and I feel like I learned a lot from you. These motors are built to last 50+ years and it’s crazy. Thank you sir
Ya missed one heck of a outboard swap meet ! I picked up a Johnson A-50 fantastic outboard for next to nothing and 2 - QD-19’s for $50 completes with great compression along with 6 very clean pressure tanks ! Best meet I’ve ever been to !
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Tomahawk, Wisconsin , there had to be 100 venders selling everything from signs to boat chrome ( vintage ) to outboards and parts ! Next year it’s August 2nd - 6th 2022 ! Be there or be square ! Lol
The boat even porpoises a little in the 1st position. My 14’ row boat used to do it too, and then I put a pair of manually adjustable trim tabs on. On calm water I tested and adjusted, tested and adjusted, tested and adjusted and so on. Eventually I was able to get the best speed and hole shot, with or without an additional 259-300 pounds in the bow. I am in the 3rd hole and no I don’t have to reset it for different conditions and it rides great even on rougher water. I also have a Dolfin on ther motor. Oh yeah, the trim on the banana looks perfect.
I have hydraulic trim on my motor now, but I always remember playing with that when I had a boat that you had the 3 spots to put the pin in. After lots of trial and error I ended up just putting it in the middle spot. I also always left the motor in the unlock position so incase I hit something the motor would just bounce off the object and usually cause less damage.
Lol 😆 that’s funny forgetting the extra mixed gas. I have been towed in before because of a brake down. It’s no fun but every time on the lake is a adventure. I’m almost 70 year old but I’m going boating in the morning.
I've become addicted to your videos recently! They gave me the confidence to pick up an old outboard cheap that needed some love, now it's running great! So thank you! Also, you wouldn't happen to recall what prop was on that 20hp Johnson would ya?
Have you tried a bolt on cavitation plate? I’ve been using them for years and been very happy with the results. Horsepower range I’ve tried is from 9.9 to 50hp. They get me on plane quicker, eliminates purposing, and stay on plane at lower RPM.
Good video Mike, drone footage is always cool. Will get one someday but being by myself would have to put it on the tracking setting and hope it stays with me? I go to different lakes and folks would like to see them from above I'm sure👍
How about testing one of seat track systems that allows you to slide the tiller seat right or left to balance the boat while running? There’s 2-3 versions out, $30-$40 ea.
Good morning. I haven’t watched this video yet but im about too. You have helped me built stands and answered other questions so thank you for that. Made my first time ever putting a boat( my boat) in the water this past Monday! It went well after rebuilding the 1968 6 hp on my 1956 Wolverine- i was so happy the motor worked well! Wondering the motor doesn’t fit over my transom though. There is wood on both sides and a piece of aluminum- doesn’t fit by much! Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you once again and have a good day
Some of those transoms are pretty thick. Depending on the size of the boat they may be designed to support a larger motor. Sometimes there is not an easy way to remove some of the wood so your clamps will fit.
Thank you but thinking i dont wanna remove the wood yet? That seems like the easy answer and not sure if its original to the boat is all? Hope that makes sense. Where i live in upstate NY we have some smaller lakes with restrictions such as boat size and motor size as well. One lake i do wanna go to is our drinking water and you can run a 9.9 is the biggest- so the 6 hp i have would be great for there im thinking. Thank you for getting back to me though. I really do appreciate any and all help and or suggestions!
It's been so hot and humid outside that I haven't been able to comfortably work on it. I have all the parts for the engine and the weather looks like it is going to cool off. Part 4 will be coming soon.

Glad to help and the really are, thanks for watching
I’ve been boating for years and your trim explanation( on water) is the best one I’ve ever seen. Thanks!
Wow, thanks! much appreciated.
I’ve learned so much from your videos and I’m teaching my two sons. Thank you for all your effort. I have a Johnson 75 9.9 that is kicking my butt
awesome, thanks for watching and commenting, tell them boys if it ain't broke fix it till it is.

I do the same aw well.
Good info especially that wrong trim can take longer to get on plane .
for sure, thanks for watching.

get after it. At least I brought my own tow boat.
Great explanation of the trim settings, video tells the tale!
Glad you liked it!
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina looking forward to getting the 25 johnson on the water
Michael row the boat ashore Hallelujah. 🎄
Heck yeah, but I do what ever I can to prevent rowing, even if it means taking a second boat to tow me home, thanks for watching.

Another good video from you Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it. We aren't done. Hoping to drop another video in the morning.

I have tried them. I actually have one that I may put on this outboard if it doesn't sell soon.

Thanks for the feedback on the drone footage. It does give the video a different perspective for sure.

yes it did. Thanks for watching

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina can’t wait. I really like your channel. Keep them coming.
What was the name of that aluminum cleaner you used on the bottom of your boat.
Napa's Aluminum Brightener here is the link to Napa www.napaonline.com/en/p/MCR1458
Here is a link to the same thing from Amazon amzn.to/37GwkBv
not good to run out of gas when are we going to see what is going on with the 50hp running wild?
it is not, I need to get back on that one, thanks for watching
do you run it the tilt in lock position or release position
I lock it if I'm in clear water. If I were to run a river I would leave it unlocked in case I were to hit something.
You might get better gas mileage if you take off the brass prop and put on an aluminum one. mabey a mile an hour Or more also.
Same top speed with the bronze vs. the Aluminum prop and same fuel consumption.
how much do you sell the motors for
Depends on the value. I have this particular 20hp up for sale for $800
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina im looking for something in the 90 to 125hp range
😅 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you.
