Kevin O'Leary: Don't Take A Gap Year After College
If you are burned out from school or just need a break, then a gap year is great. Work and save up money, or if you are fortunate to travel, do that before you are locked down with a job and have less freedom to travel. Or volunteer.
College is vacation
@@Scarface_445 No it isn't, but ok.
Burned out? What are you, a kindergartner? I worked 2 jobs, 20-30 hours a week on top of a full course load at the 3rd best state college in New York and graduated with a 3.5 GPA. Sure, I was busy, but I had plenty of time to rest during school vacation and weekends. You need a whole year off? For what? Sitting around? Get excited about your future and start building it. Today, not next year.
I always thought that a gap year was supposed to be before College, not after.
Me too
It is there’s both
Pretty sure his advice would be the same
Same
I am thinking of taking gap year after 1st year my degree is of 3 years but I feel like I am not enjoying it it feels like a burden.
I hate-watch Kevin O'Leary videos to remind myself what kind of person I don't want to be.
Brokie
Bro is a clown
Ditto!
I’m really hoping that no one is taking this piece of advice seriously. Gap year abroad, although taking it as a sabbatical from college, was one the best decisions of my life. To me, it means you’re willing to take on risk, adventure, accept personal growth, and build a unique skill set of how to work with others. Mr Wonderful has solid finance advice, but this is definitely not one of them.
I wish I took a gap year. I would’ve worked and helped my parents out to save and pay for college. It also would’ve helped me not bounce around with a major so much, as well as develop myself. I felt like I entered uni too young, inexperienced, and easily influenced/persuaded. My life isn’t about getting a job to make Kevin O’Leary and the likes of him money. Not gonna listen to boomers about the job market anymore because the arrogance is exhausting.
10000% agreed. Gap years are a great time for personal enhancement. This guy's just tryna find ways to enslave people to squeeze that profit
He is right but the truth hurts.

Thank you so much for this.
This is the stupidest advice I’ve ever seen. I took a 2 year gap year and moved to the United States as an au pair. Not only did I meet my second family, I also realized what I career I want to head into. Taking 2 gap years was by far the best decision I’ve ever made.
being an au pair is work and going to the US gives you connections, with it being one of the wealthiest countries in the world
here's my advice:
gap year saved my life, literally. school was extremely overwhelming and i had some really dark thoughts, i couldn't get into the college i wanted. i overworked myself to the point getting up from the bed would be the biggest task ever. i lied there staring at the ceiling. i decided to pause, take a break. my parents were super supportive, encouraged me because they saw me drained mentally and physically. i didn't exactly have one full year because i had to start preparing for the next year's exam from jan. so i had august-december of 2022 to myself. the best months of my life. i caught up to my friends, family, starting working out, eating healthy, my mindset became so much more relaxed, i started sleeping well again. unfortunately it passed by too quick but im extremely grateful to have those months. i feel like a completely new person. 100% recommend it to anyone who's confused or overwhelmed.
Bad take
@@deydeygames3148 it worked for me lmfao. u can speak for yourself
I regret not having taken a gap year. Now I am 26, a chronic disease that makes it very difficult for me to enter the economy and even more difficult to travel. Do what you want, it's you who has to live later with your choices
there many way to gain experience, a year off isn't just about staying at home and sleeping, it's can be about time you learn, do, live whatever you improve your prospect.
Exactly!
I think the point is right after college is the wrong time to take a gap year. Your degree is worth more while it's fresh, employers care more about what you've done in the last year then the years before that.
I took a gap year after college teaching English in France and had no regrets. I mastered the French language, made great friends, and got a unique opportunity to live in a small French town. When you "GET A JOB" you're missing a chance. Right out of school you likely have few obligations. So hoping to be able to take a full YEAR during your youth becomes more-and-more difficult once you commit yourself to a lifestyle that society wants: stable job, spouse, kids, mortgage payments, etc, etc, etc.
I am thinking of doing this! How did you go back getting this job please ?
Teaching English abroad allows you the opportunity to go to another country, but still meets this guy's expectations that you "get a job." I am also interested in how you secured your teaching position in France.
Hi, this may seem weird to ask considering this comment was from two years ago, but how did you find an opportunity to teach English in a foreign country?
never heard about gap years after college. Just take a gap year after high school instead, that's when you don't even know what you want to study anyway.
Not possible when you're poor and don't have rich parents
@@amylieu6084 Th'ats so harsh, lol.
+Donovan Daniels or instead of a gap year after high school, just take some general electives before declaring a major.
I have never heard of a gap year after graduating college, after graduating high school I can understand because your becoming an adult and you have more freedom available to you now. Senior year of college is more so about trying to line up a job after you graduate maybe seeing if you can be converted at your internship.
typical rich parent spoiled brat bs. most of these kids know if all else fails, daddy's business has a job lined up for them.
This coming from a man who expects his employees to answer the phone on vacation. He clearly has never heard of burnout. Or suicide.
from what i understood from that video was he confused flexible hours and remote work as "vacation"
he doesn’t mean that by vacation. he means that he wants his employees to just get work done, whenever as long as it’s done on time. so if you happen to be on vacation, he expects you to get your work done on your own schedule before or during the vacation.
@@alicia_grace well i get getting work done on your own time. if there is work left to be done on the day im heading out to vacation, it will be there when i get back or reassign work to someone else if you want it done.
but no way im doing work on my personal vacation time unless mr. o'Leary's wants to reimburse me for the trip and the vacation time i originally took off.
Phantom Warrior ok then lose your job? Lmao
@@cherrislair7880 well i might put up with the guy until i find another job that respects my work life balance.

@@Scarface_445 I'd love to make 6 figures, but not if it means doing a job I hate and getting barely any PTO to travel the world. I guess that's why becoming a teacher speaks to me.
If you ever wanted to travel to enjoy exploring the world and understand other cultures forget about it. get into the economy and enjoy life of paying debt. it's a lot more fun
@ Doesn't have to be that way...Lot of people don't know what they want to do after college..Taking a year off can help you clear your mind a lot..so many people rush into some job only to hate and change their careers in their 30s.. As long as you don't have too much debt, there is nothing wrong with taking a year off..Not everyone wants to be a shark in shark tank.
@ bro you've obviously never travelled anywhere, what a stupid mentality.
Amen!

@@kileerr1533 well i have travelled quite a bit. and throughout the world i have seen white kids who either are loaded and live it up overseas. or its average joe kids scraping by who do anything to survive. living in a cramped room with 10 people like a junky. im like thats no way to travel.
whenever i travel, i arrange for a comfortable place to stay, a rental car and good food. its not super fancy but its comfortable. but to do this form of travel you need to have plenty of money saved up. and it helps having worked quite a few days.
Why are we supposed to make all of our life decisions based on prioritizing our carrier/ capitalism. We only have one life, why not actually live it. This video has convinced me to take a gap year.

Don’t listen to this guy listen to yourself. If you need a gap then take it. If you don’t then don’t, everyone is different. If you have the the courage, drive, determination and a bit of luck you’ll get to where you need to be.
@ Most people who take gap years are usually those who just graduated from high school. Gap years are also different for different people. Some take gap years to go to school in other countries or get more learning experiences in places other then college. A gap year can be more than just "taking time off". It can also be good for planning for the long run. But gap years are dangerous if you're not careful with them. Sitting on your couch all day playing video games is not a good way to spend your time
@ are you dumb lol lots of studies talk about the benefits of taking a gap year in between college and high school, thinking you're shooting yourself in the foot is just an old boomer wives tale. And not not all gap years are taken the same, lots are taken going oversees for a year in other countries going to school there.
@@derekward3512 I am dumb?!! You haven't hit reality yet Derek. Employers don't consider this to be of any value and just puts your career on a downward spiral that more than likely you'll never be able to pull out of. Good luck doing your job saying 'you want fries with that?'
@ You literally dont have any idea who I am or what my ambitions are. Most of what I am doing during my gap year is education based to prepare me for college and my future career. I'm preparing to live oversees temporarily to get teaching experience as an English teacher. Maybe you shouldn't assume why people are doing what they're doing is because they're lazy. Not everybody needs to follow the status quo and go to college right away, it's ok to be different and it doesn't mean you will be denied by all job opportunities
@ Again this isn't the 1980s dude, there's tons of opportunities and no offense but you don't sound like an expert in all fields, not every single thing needs to be done right after high school. You aren't going to be automatically rejected for taking a gap year. Tons of gap year opportunities include volunteering experience which looks great on college applications. Going to a new culture for example and learning a new language is something colleges love to see on applications. You don't seem to realize that there are tons of opportunities for education that occurs during a gap year that doesn't just include sitting at home
A gap year has never meant taking a vacation to people close to me it’s always been about building your resume for graduate school or medical school
I took a gap year...by working in real estate and figuring out why I didn't like the job. It was then back to grad school for another year with the perks of a gap year (traveling included) and my career path is more crystal clear now than before.
I am going into real estate, why didnt you like it
@@bigbritishcolumbia7827 Wasn't my thing honestly.
My “gap year” was working in a gym, and that was one of the best things. In my free time, I was working out, cut back on drinking, and built social skills I needed. Something happens when you decide you want better for your life, and lifting weights becomes a form of prayer and healing.
Even though I wasn’t sure on a major/career path, my parents said no to a gap year after high school because they didn’t think I’d come back for college. Now I’m graduated with a business degree and still feel like I need a year to do further internships, travel and figure out what direction I want to go in.
@J Hence why you will always lag behind others in life.
Why does it matter what your parents say?
Corporate America needs new fresh meat. Get to work you slaves. God forbid you actually start thinking for yourself.
I love how Mr. W dangels the carrot of running the show if you only work hard now.
He's literally telling you to think for yourself at the end. Solve problems. Capitalism doesn't actually reward the greedy who just want money. In order to get reward, you have to solve problems, the larger the scope of the problem, the more the reward.
But for this you have to think, which you obviously can't.
Gap years are a good thing. Don’t let this greedy dummy tell you how to live.
POV: Boomer billionaire tells you why gap year bad
The gap year is defined as between high school and college. And for some teenagers it is really important to have that year. Let them do volunteer work and have some time to think and grow up!
Gap year is a Euro concept. Take it...you will be 20 odd only once but will sit at your desk all your life.
LWRC most people who take a gap year actually do something with that year or period like travel or work (and have plans for what to when it’s over) otherwise you’re just unemployed for year
Why wait a year if you can be a slave to the system right away is what this wealthy guy is telling you.
Ha I didn’t want to take a gap year but COVID said you’re taking one lol
Worst advice I’ve ever heard from Mr O’Leary..... travel will work wonders for your life, your relationship and your professional career. He didn’t do a gap year so how can he honestly give this advice?
idk maybe because he's happily married and he's a millionaire with net worth of half a billion ?
@@khoado123 I mean he did grow up abroad.
You can travel when you actually have the money and not deeply in debt.
@@dadwilllyb7907 honestly travelling really is an asset if used wisely and you can cut costs.
Blitz Of The Reich I agree but doing that $40,000 in debt is not
I see this play out a lot with pre-med students before they do med school. One “gap year” can easily turn into three or four based on when you decide to get serious about applying, having to take/retake the MCAT...not to mention the full year-long application cycle.
Gap year is great but it needs to be strategic and planned well. U can have a really great future ahead that may be even better than some people out there! I took a 2 year gap just sleeping it off and resting.. There are anxieties for sure and comparison with peers which kinda take a toll on mental health but these 2 years, no stress, well rested. My advice is, plan your gap months/year(s) wisely and you really wont regret it!
If serving others is your life goal, takes his advice
this is the same guy who quit working as a scooper in an ice cream shop on the first day and never worked for anybody else again. Take the gap year, this man thinks you're a plebe and a corporate slave...
That was over 30 years ago the world have change dramatically since then
So the guy who quit work to do his work is hypocritical because he tells others to work? Nah.
I had a lost year after being fired the first time. I took a job doing something i always wanted to do, had fun then the next year i got a job i loved getting paid well. The gap year helped me refocus
Travelling the world and understanding opinions, cultures and diversity has a far better long term effect than deciding to work in an office cubicle for a year
Facts!
hey old man, things aren't as how they were 50 years ago college isnt the only way to get a job
And sometimes it's just a way to accrue debt.
Learning foreign languages by living abroad matters a lot nowadays. Its a pity this huge benefit is not considered.
It's not required but definitely a great life experience and wonderful thing to do.
If ( youhave == loan ) {
print ( "get a job and repay it" );
}
else {
print("Take a Gap year to find out what interests you and build a business in that");
}
youhave == loan? Are you a first year CS student? That's horrible code.
9-5 job = working for the weekend...try to dream bigger, it hopefully will be worth it more in the end
While I generally agree - if that's the mentality you have then you shouldn't go to college and in some cases spend hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is totally more to life than just a 9-5 job, but maybe you should be travelling, volunteering, etc before you do a 4 year degree
Exactly
Take a gap before school. I’m with him after you graduate get secured for yourself
i did a lot of gap year stuff. i traveled extensively. it was the era before smart phones and the internet. i often regret not having had pushed it even further as i thought i had to play the game. well i look back now and think why didnt i travel even more. there was something g magical about traveling before 25 for me. ive traveled the whole world now. but its not as magical as when i was young. somehow i dont think working for a guy who calls himself mr wonderful would be a priority. not sure why for me traveling was and still is my priority. but yeah i accidentally spent 22 years in japan. whooooops. for better or worse traveling is my whole life. culture language and human experience were great to experience.
I wish I took a gap year after high school . I would have picked a school farther from home and gotten more confident in my social abilities
Cold hard truth, you get money and get ahead helping others. If it's not helping other people it's just a hobby. Work doesn't always have to be perfect, some times you have to do what you have to do to get paid.
There is currently a pandemic and companies are laying off employees. There are literally no jobs. I guess I'll be taking a gap year and working part time.
No student debt, went backpacking and traveled for a couple months, don't regret it. Now that I work, I can't take a 3 month break from work like I did when I graduated
You need to find a job that you enjoy. It turns into a vacation when you go to work .

I took a gap year off and I enjoyed it. Then got a job. Enjoy your life before you get old!
I seriously considered doing a gap year after college. I ended up working instead. And wow. I would be incredibly worried had I taken a gap year because there’s a recession now. I think students should get a job after college and then do a gap year (they call it a sabbatical) at some point in their career. I know I’m going to do that.
If you take a gap year you will have a real awakening once you hit the workforce
Exactly!!! A lot of folks making comments encouraging taking the gap year are clueless on what this does to a person's career! Nothing like sinking a career before the first job has begun!!!
@ please calm down, if someone majored in a highly-in-demand area, taking a gap year won't make that much difference
I took a gap year to look for a company I can grow in while I am in college. I finally got a part time job that pays for my college and look forward in being wit them for a long time.
No one that takes a gap year has gone back to college as aggressively as their peers that just kept going after high school. But maybe that’s a good thing!
Why is that good
I took a 'gap year' after university to travel abroad. I started a successful eCommerce business after a few months. I'm never moving back to the US. Best decision I've made. Honestly, the things this man says 😂😢
Actually, don't. Unless you already expect to get $0 from financial aid when you go to college, most of the money you will earn while working that gap year will go to uni. costs. Why?? Because you have to report that earned income, both the gov and your uni. will have access to that information, and it will disqualify you from need-based aid. There's no point in wasting a year's time and money by working when you could just get the aid without it.
Better yet, don’t even go to college. Pick up a trade and learn to invest.
How you invest
Dream on
Who comes up with these advice subjects?😂 gap year after college. I took a gap of 6 months and it was one of the best decisions I made. A lot of online courses and computer skills were gained, and I was able to thoroughly look for another course that better suited me. From my experience not all is lost when you totally fail and this is when you can learn a lot more than ever before whilst clearing your head.
he's talking about people who have 60k in debt in communications and decide not to work and just get into more debt
TheCoffeeNut711 wow. What a foul work ethic and attitude they have. All the things they learned and they do nothing. Maybe the study should come with free mental evaluations after they graduate. Debt isn’t a fun thing but doing nothing can only make it worse.
TheCoffeeNut711 totally agree with you . Not getting too stressed was a good thing after lots of it at once. Too had people aren’t as prepared for the real world as they can be. It has me wondering about how they’ll integrate into society (or not)
"forget all that get a job get in the game get into the economy start to play the game" sounds good boss
He’s the absolute worst and he is the exact reason why people leave their jobs because of a mental breakdown. His kind uses people and spits them out. I swear he lives in his own world.

Unless you're completely lost at life a gap year sounds like a complete waste of time. A lot can or cannot happen in that year.
It all depends on your situation. Sure some people waste their time doing a gap year but if you have the means and a job waiting for you when you return do it
I'm thinking about taking a gap year but not for travelling but for taking some courses and certifications I'm interestes in.
