*aight imma head out*
For anyone who doubts it, THIS is the power of music theory!
Exactly. Knowing *why* something sounds good is a valuable tool, though it's not always necessary with today's production pipelines.
We have never had music theory, it's sad :(

Alright, let's do this
I feel like you invented a really really really good excersise for developing creativity, timing, pitch .. and just overall songwriting for anybody thats blessed enough to have this equipment this should be a really really good once a week excersise!!!
I think being able to hear what you're doing and work on correcting it far outweighs the benefits of this challenge.
You can make something TOLERABLE without hearing it
Beethoven: Excuse me what the duck
Beethoven was flat on the floor playing a sawed off piano , he said he could sort of ear it

I’m pretty sure Beethoven was completely deaf near the end of his life, and mainly just relied on math to compose

Typical school band simulator. Everyone's playing without hearing anything. :d
True true

That was awesome! When I was brand new to recording, just a young pup, I remember being too timid to tell the engineer that I couldn't hear myself at all, so I just played what I thought would work. When the song finished, everyone said, "Great! On to the next track." I replied, "Wait! Can I hear it first?" "Of course", the engineer replied. Only after hearing it back and being relieved that it actually sounded right did I tell them that I couldn't hear myself during the recording. The engineer looked at the board and realized that he had my channel muted in the headphones. He felt awful, but the band said, "Whatever...it worked!"
By the way, I agree with one of the other comments that this is one of the huge benefits of music theory. You know what will work before you play it.
just curious, i know this is an older comment but is there anywhere i can hear what you were working on? great story btw÷)
@@crumbdoggmillionaire It was a demo. Unfortunately, all of the copies are long gone. Our lead singer sounded like a cross between Steve Perry (Journey) and Geoff Tate (Queensryche). It's a shame none of us could find any copies of the demo, but it's been almost twenty years.
A true testament of an artist pushing against obstacles and coming out victorious. Rob, great job. Regardless of the obstacle, you have conquered your hurdles. Very inspirational.

This is my favorite video so far. You are incredible man I don't know how you so this stuff.
No books were harmed during the making of this video.
This is why you need basic music theory kids
@@lymphhh Dude, I'm joking. If you want a practical use of music theory, you could also use it to help you figure out where you might want a riff to go instead of just trying to hack it out for an hour. You can see if staying in the same key or switching to a completely different one or saying fuck a key I'm gonna go chromatically here. Another practical use is explaining the key to a band member so they can join in (of course this only works if they know basic music theory too). Music theory, unlike what music teachers like to push, is a way of communicating and labeling what you're playing, not a parameter of how to play, or an excuse to act like an elitist.
Danger Geoff knowing theory would actually make writing down music really easy without hearing it
Surprisingly good. Congrats Rob!

Man Rob, so the first half of the video, I'm sorta following along and can envision things. And then you start the vocals, and I forgot what the buildups and chorus sounded like, and you seemed to do the same. I was almost certain by about 3/4 of the way through that it was going to be a bit of a mess. But I have to say, you're a musical genius, and it was a real bonafide song by the end. I'm extraordinarily impressed man, stellar work!

One idea, delay a speaker by 20 seconds and improvise alone with yourself (a 20 seconds in the past version of yourself).
Not that different form using a delay pedal.
@@masonharris9166 The difference is how far at the past the delay is (20 seconds) and the delay would have no extra effects just the thing he played 20 seconds at the past.
Or do a much shorter delay, like a speech jammer (as demonstrated on QI: ua-cam.com/video/T_arfIPgL5U/v-deo.html).
