    I’ve come to not like walks anymore because you’re at the mercy of the irresponsible owners who let dogs out of yards or can’t control them on a leash! Great tips! It’s unfortunate we need to pack some of these items, but they are needed when you least expect it!

    Yes! I carry citronella spray, a large carabeaner clip to whip around attached to a leash and a stun gun. We've been attacked multiple times already....so now I'm always on alert for any off leash dog's around us. Also, being pregnant now I DEFINITELY am on full alert. And so is my female GSD!!

    Thanks Robert. I actually own the same torch and tazer. Had to use spray on an aggressive dog years ago. I was 9 months pregnant. The spray worked great. Was on a Walk with my smaller dog once with no protection. A large GSD charged. My small dog faced up. I thought he was going to be ripped apart. I stood up big and tall like a growling bear behind my dog and I roared….It worked! I do feel better always having something on me though.
    BTW… I live in a beautiful quiet neighborhood…it can happen anywhere.

    Totally agree about being vigilant and use your hearing. I'm hyper vigilant anyway due to a prior attack whilst my dogs were at home. Sadly anything that could be used for protecting yourself are banned here in the U.K. Great video Robert and people should remember that it is the time for your dogs , NOT the phone. Thanks.

    These are great tips.
    Robert, if I may, I am going to add some tips for people from my neck of the woods (Sri Lanka/South Asia) where dog parks, rules, sometimes pavements don't exist, and stray dogs and cats are everywhere.
    1. Things to carry to ward away stray dogs: a spray bottle of citronella oil. It's non-toxic but the smell is enough to get most stray dogs to scram and keep good distance between yourself/your dog and the stray
    2. Walking dogs in South Asian cities is way more complicated for too many reasons to list here. My neighbourhood for instance doesn't have pavents so there is a clear danger to your dog being accidentally hit by a moving vehicle. I mitigate this by always having the dog on the side away from moving traffic. So if say traffic is on my lefthand side, my dog will be on the right, and vice versa. This way, it's my body that is closest to traffic, not the dog's
    3. No long leash/leash-less. Please dear god no.
    4. We also have some crazy drivers here, often kids speeding in residential neighbourhoods. This makes crossing the road with a dog complicated. How I cross with my dog is to have her between my legs, and leash from harness (not collar, I dont like collars on my dogs) rising up 90 degrees vertically, and nicely wrapped in both my hands. This way, every passing vehicle will see my head and slow down, even if they missed the dog.
    5. Nightwalks with led harness, torch, and citronella oil as mentioned above.

    • @Mimijona

      Wow the citronella oil is a new thing for me but might be great as I have it at home already. But it maked sense - my dog allways leaves the room when I apply my anti mosquito oil spray

    Unfortunately all the tools you mentioned are illegal in my country! Here in Italy, self-defense is only calling the police. Even during an assault with bare hands, the defense must be proportionate or you risk going to jail for excess of self-defense. Any kind of weapon or tool for attack and defense is completely illegal here and if the police catch you on the street even with a Leatherman multitool you risk being arrested. If a thief invade your home and your dog bites him in defense, you risk a complaint and must compensate the thief.

    That was interesting, I thought about something a like a second poo bag or some toys to play with but it seems in the US you guys prepare for the worst possible outcome of a walk.
    Aside the fact that most of the stuff would be illegal where I live it shows the difference in the mindset between European and the US.
    I like the advice on paying attention to your surroundings which is key to me when walking my dog. It's a bad habit to stare on your phone and you also miss hints of your dogs. The dog might have warned you to walk closer to another dog but you missed it because you checked your phone.
    I love the channel and there is so much good information and many interesting people to listen to and learn from.

      Being prepared for bad situations is in the DNA of a large part of the population around here.
      The chances of needing those items are very, very rare, but watching your dog, wife, kids, or yourself get tore up by an aggressive dog or human attacker is not an option.
      Fire extinguisher for fires, problem extinguishers for problems.

    Oh yeah! You're on a walk with your dog. It's like driving, especially if you have a reactive dog. You're seeing what's ahead of you, what's behind you, barking dogs, stray cats, etc. I live in PA where people are looking for bait dogs. Free to good homes ads, etc. Years ago, it was Action 81 where people/vans were rounding up dogs for research facilities because pet dogs only know love, compared to the dogs that were raised for research. Then there's Lady Gaga with her Frenchies, whose dog walker ended up in the hospital, and her dogs stolen. Crazy! Thank you for making people more aware!

  • @renaeaz76

    I use Pet Safe Shield Spray. It won't hurt the dog or people (if you get blowback like with pepper spray) the dogs just don't like the scent of it, and the sudden startle factor spooks them (like air horn which I used to carry). I have stopped charging pits with this stuff and prevented many dog fights over the years (our town has an issue with loose dogs, I run into loose dogs 2-3 times a week). I like it because it stops the dog BEFORE it gets to my dogs. I also carry gel mace (thats for people lol). The gel prevents blowback to the user. I keep one in one pocket and the other in another pocket so I never get them confused, that way I never have to look at which one I grab, I already know which one I'm grabbing.

    • @abettermind
      @abettermind 11 місяців тому

      Deterrents like that are good for mildly motivated attacks.
      If you get surprised or encounter a truly dedicated attacker, it will be rather useless. That is true for the mace and people as well. Many, many people have been stabbed to death after shooting their attacker several times. Adrenaline is a scary thing, and im of the opinion that several different tools should be available.

    Thanks, Robert. Along with a stick and flashlight, I would just add that if I may be walking my dog after dusk (coming home or on an evening "business" stroll, and especially in the fall and winter when the sun goes down early) my dog has a reflective harness and collar. I walk her with the collar and use the harness as extra visibility, or hook the lead to it anywhere I may want to give her more room to get in some sniffing and such. The harness adds a greater reflective area. Even though I also have reflective walking gear and stop and have my dog sit beside me if a car is coming near us in tight areas and at crosswalks, drivers can still get very close and aren't always very attentive. Where I live, people have been hit by cars even on sidewalks when walking their dogs, and many (people and/or dogs) didn't survive.

    • @abettermind
      @abettermind 11 місяців тому

      I've tested them on myself, and they definitely work. The current locks up your muscles, because our nervous system uses electricity to contract our muscles. The taser overrides our neural signals by sending the biggest, meanest signal your muscles have ever felt.

    I'm thinking the more tools you carry the more stress about which one to use if something does occur (off-leash attack or the like). Also you must be aware that in a turmoil you would be just as likely to tase your own dog as tasing the attacker, unless you have serious beforehand training. I do believe you're kind of getting a false sense of security with the-more-gadgets-the-better approach...
    If I would feel the need for protection on walks I would chose only one tool, possibly the stick or maybe the air horn.

    I have a personal security alarm that when you pull out the pin makes a really loud 130 decibels sound. It works great in the dog park when all the dogs are crowded at the gate. They immediately stop and step away from the gate so the new dog can get inside safely. I know you are not in favor of dog parks however if you observe the dogs that are in there before entering and if there aren't too many dogs inside it can be fun for your dog. The key is to use your common sense. Some dogs are not going to enjoy dog parks and some dogs love them. My personal alarm works when dogs get too aggressive or if I sense that a dog might be getting out of control. The loud noise really makes them stop in their tracks. I would be careful about using anything that remotely looks like a gun. With the gun laws being so lax in my area I could find myself getting shot with a real gun. I like the flashlight though. I would like to carry it even when I am not walking my dog. Love your tip about cellphones. I carry mine for safety but don't have it in my hand when I am on a walk.

Anyways I need to be prepared for a possible scuffle cause since she doesn't want to be bothered by dogs, when they approach her she will growl and if they insist on smelling her she may nip and I worry that if its a loose dog with no owner around, like a pit bull, it would kill her!! So I got some dog pepper spray and attached that to her leash. My question is will that be enough? Should I get something stronger? I want to protect my angel! I'm thinking a taser or stun gun? I have no option but to carry a rambo knife and telescope kosh with me for protection, which ironically are much more viscous weapons if I need to use in an emergency. We had a lot of puppy dog thefts of handsome dogs like my purebread from my home town staffy in lockdown as the dogs tripled in value. Does anyone know if you can get a tazer or stun gun sent to the UK from America? I don't have convictions, but if you fuck with my family (including dogs) I will attempt to defend and protect.
