Just got back from your show in Chicago. Never thought I'd get to shake your hands, much less get picked out of a crowd! Thank you guys for being as cool in person as you are on screen. Truly a night I won't forget.
You know it’s a good band when the studio and live recordings have very little differentiation. Really shows how well a trained voice can be accustomed to a sound and can adjust it to any surrounding.
@@thelongestjohns I'm also in awe of anyone who can get audio technology to function well, and I'm constantly impressed with how great the regular live streams in the studio sound. So it's clearly both a talent with the music as well as some magic touch with mics and stream elements/OBS and whatnot, as well.
@@thelongestjohns Personally I like the in-person shows so much better than the recordings. One of the very few groups to be able to pull this off in my opinion.
My late grandfather used to sail from Marion Massachusetts to Nantucket Island from the 60’s to the late 80’s. Every time I hear this song, I feel him over my shoulder.
This might be my favorite song from the new album. Wonderful imagery. True story: My boss was making fun of my coveralls the other day. I told my boss when he is doing my job, he can do it however he wants. I choose to wear coveralls and sing sea songs all day. He just laughed. I don't think he believes me.

Adequate rendition of an adequate song. I've got the album and this is one of the songs where I had to look up some terms. Hadn't heard of a "Long nine" before. Now I know.
Hats off to you, gentlemen. You just seem to get better and better with each year that passes. I've been a fan since the first "Haul Away Joe" video. That was good; this is way, way beyond that. I'd go so far as to say that it's adequate! Easily my favourite song off Smoke and Oakum, and there are some great songs on that album.
First time I heard it, I thought “Nantucket sleighrides and chimneys afire” meant he was thinking of winter in Nantucket…then I found out what those terms really meant😢
You must come back to New England in the summer and visit Nantucket, Newport and Cape Cod. You are likely to see many Union Jacks flying in New England, many of us our from Old English famiies. Thank you for the great concert in East Greenwich!
I'm so glad there's finally a version of this song with a comments section so I can ask what the fuck it is about. I mean yes, sea battle, Sons of Liberty, I did figure that bit out, my US public school didn't completely fail me, but is there some specific history with Nantucket? Is Mr. Starbuck an actual dude? I must know! History nerds of UA-cam, save me from my ignorance (please, if you want, no pressure).
I'm not 100% on Mr. Starbuck, but I do know Nantucket was known as a whaling town at the time this song takes place and there are several references to whaling in the lyrics. A "Nantucket sleighride" is what happens when a whale is harpooned, and it begins to drag the boat behind it as it swims. Also the "alarm" referred to here, on a whaling vessel, meant that prey had been spotted and the chase was on! But on a warship, it meant that enemy vessels had been sighted and the men needed to take their positions at the cannons ("long nines"). "Shot handlers" were young lads who ran down to the hold to get cannonballs and powder and the like, and ran it back up to the deck to hand off to the gunners. That's all I can think of right now, so if anyone has more, please help us out!
Mr. Starbuck is a real person! The Starbucks were a whaling family that lived in Nantucket from the 17th to 19th century. The song is specifically about Matthew Starbuck who served with John Paul Jones during the revolutionary war. There's a lot more information I can't remember, but I hope that satisfies some of your curiosity!

I come from an island, an islander's ways
Breakers and Quakers and few of us stray
Hunting the oceans with men that won't tire
Nantucket sleigh rides and chimneys afire
Some may be wary and won't understand
Trading a spear for a flag in the hand
A jetsam that rides 'pon some shipping out east
Out to go hunting a different beast
Fire flies from the long nines
Shot-handlers run about
The captain says we'll holler
As though there was some doubt
And as we blow on the matches
And brace to take the shock
My mind is in Nantucket
Hauling whale meat into dock
I'm not used to bracing in weather so calm
Still making cheer when I hear the alarm
As iron and fire knock nails from the stern
The shores are no longer my biggest concern
Our skipper is canny, a droll kind of soul
He never sulked and he's still cracking jokes
Ah, Mr Starbuck, your aim is quite rare
Well, I aim to sink her beyond disrepair
Fire flies from the long nines
Shot-handlers run about
The captain says we'll holler
As though there was some doubt
And as we blow on the matches
And brace to take the shock
My mind is in Nantucket
Hauling whale meat into dock
History favours the bold and the brave
Conquer the mountains and weather the waves
Now I'm away with all liberty's sons
Off down the channel to stand by the guns
Fire flies from the long nines
Shot-handlers run about
The captain says we'll holler
As though there was some doubt
And as we blow on the matches
And brace to take the shock
My mind is in Nantucket
Hauling whale meat into dock
Fire flies from the long nines
Shot-handlers run about
The captain says we'll holler
As though there was some doubt
And as we blow on the matches
And brace to take the shock
My mind is in Nantucket
Hauling whale meat into dock
I believe it’s “hull her”, not “holler”. As in, firing cannonballs into the ship’s hull to sink it.
