@@MKVProcrastinator It's the live recordings you see in these videos. These are different from the mixed studio recordings of their previous albums. It's something that lots of bands do, to offer different kinds of sounds. Live recordings are more "natural" while mixed recordings are more "polished". Not everyone cares about the difference, but some do.
I also like the alternate lyrics: "Tis the song and the sigh of the hungry, Hard crackers, hard crackers come around no more, Many days you have lingered on our stomachs sore Oh, hard crackers come again no more! " - popular Civil War era lyrics
Not actually British in this American song. You might've heard another American song that in the chorus goes "Bohn in the USA". That was not sung in British accent either.
That's because it was composed by America's first somewhat successful composer of popular songs, Stephen Foster (1826-1864). I can't believe he's not acknowledged in this video!
Would’ve been funny if this was recorded in Maida Vale Studios lol. Made Of Ale recorded in Maida Vale. Maida Vale studios is also where the doctor who theme was created
Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music, light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's a pale weeping maiden who toils her life away With a worn heart whose better days are o'er Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more Oh, hard times, come again no more Oh, hard times, come again no more Let me know if these lyrics aren't exactly correct lol
I feel this right now, especially after dealing with Hurricane Ian. I’m tired of the hard times: pandemics, recessions, wars, natural disasters. I’ve had enough lol.
These made of ale sessions have quickly become my favorite thing to listen to!! The vibes, the vocal, everything is just so calming and pleasing to listen to!!
This song helped me feeling good during my depression and one month ago, it gave me my first kiss. Thank you for making this song so perfect 🥰 Edit : I come back after one year to say this is still my favorite song ever. Thank you again TLJ ❤️

There I was playing Far Cry 5 intensely, until I heard 2 NPCs around a campfire and singing this song with soft melodies. so I just called Boomer over to me and we enjoyed the ambience and the good music.
Harmonies absolutely perfect. And beautifully played. My favourite version of this song and that’s saying something. Joyful and singalogy. Excellent. 👏🏻👏🏻
This gives me strong Red Dead Redemption 2 epilogue vibes, it's also one of my favorite songs to sing along to on my route to work in the morning. Beautifully done. I hope someone feeds Andy before he swallows that mic though 😂
A wonderful song, performed brilliantly by the boys here. Excellent versions also done by The Red Clay Ramblers, Joan Baez and Emmylou Harris and Mary J. Blige. Composed by the wonderful Stephen Foster, the song, for me, conjures feelings and memories from the lockdown of the early pandemic.
Very glad you guys covered this, love the ambiance of these recordings and the chances to see the rest of your crew - the very talented violinist, drummer, bassist- performing alongside!
God I love all the things you guys have done at the Forge. It's just a different sound a feeling to the music. Though I will say, as much as I love this recording the original music video for it is still my most favorite. But this is definitely my most beloved of all your covers. Keep up the Excellent work guys.

If ever you've thought, "I just want to rest now,i want no more, no more,? please let rest." This is for you. May it take you through that time. May you pass through this. May you one day look back and laugh at all of it.
Just saw you guys in Portland, and it was easily one of the highlights of my life. Your music is my favorite and means a lot to me. Thanks for coming to Portland. Hope to see you again soon.
I really love this song and your fantastic harmonies and the addition of the drummer, it all works so well. I am going through hard times right now, and this song helps to lift my spirits a bit. Thank you guys!
This is one of my favorite songs and one I love to sing/sing-along with. I really like your arrangement of this with the staggered introduction of more voices and instruments. That chorus at 3:30 when the music drops out and all voices join in (even the instrumentalists!) is just special. I thought you guys were good when you were sitting around a table singing years ago but you are really impressing me with how you've elevated your songs in ways that enhance and never detract from the 'folk-i-ness' of the music you sing. Well done. (gotta admit, I got kind of teary in my first listen; I love this song and your versions so much)
Actually, this is one that is definitely not a folk song. It was composed by Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) in 1854. I don't know why they didn't bother to acknowledge him in this video's credits.
Fabulous as ever - love the Made of Ale sessions - but will probably keep watching the hoedown in the old shed version where you all had such fun. Thanks to all.
I had a look through the Music videos playlist, and there's a few of the Made of Ale ones that are missing. This one, Hog Eye, and Pride of the White Star Line. Would be lovely if they could be magicked into it so I can have all the delicious videos in one place. 'Cause, you know, it's so much work to click two different playlists when I want to listen to more things ;) Btw, I think Hard Times would be amazing as a community video. It's such a cozy song somehow. I think I'm gonna let The Longest Pony rest today and have Made of Ale on repeat :)
It does not need to be arranged with this lively beat and instrumentation; in its earliest days, the likely performance was as parlor music, with one singer accompanied by a piano. Think of a small party in 1855, with the daughter of the household playing the piano, an 'accomplishment', and the father singing the lyrics. It tells the well-off people at the party to give a thought to those less fortunate. For another take on this classic, check out the magnificent Mavis Staples : ua-cam.com/video/KZsO348BOW0/v-deo.html
One of my favourites from your recent lot! Any chance of a better introduction to your resident fiddler, bassist, and percussionist though? Perhaps a few songs, each with their own solo?
I'm an inland kind of guy. I was born and raised in a forest. I've seen the ocean many times, but it's a journey from my home. I'm absolutely no sailor; singing sea shanties feels akin to stolen valor. This one might be sung close enough to a John Deere for me to participate in.
Well this isn't a sea shanty, but a traditional American folk/parlor song. While it can be sung at sea the idea is to sing it at parties to honor the less fortunate. It was a big deal during the Civil war as union soilders would sing it to keep moral up, and made their own parody version about hardtack.
Woo-hoo guys that's was beautiful 😍 well done always like to see you guys post a video here on UA-cam and hear a great song 🎵 👏 😀 ❤️ hugs from the U.S.
You guys got us all through the "lockdowns" and all the insanity of the COVID shenanigans with much more of our sanity intact than the powers-that-be probably wished. Thank you, for doing a little to help prevent the utter destruction of Western Civilization. I know it sounds hyperbolic and trite, but believe me when I say, your music has, in fact, saved lives...
You're gonna be in Seattle?! But I *just* blew all my money seeing BAND-MAID there! FUUUUUUUUU- Not that I'd change my decision, but dammit I wish I'd realized sooner so I might have been able to see both.
Made Of Ale releases this Friday!!! Find this and all the other recordings through the link below…

So what exactly is Made Of Ale anyway? From what I've seen, it's just re-recordings of some of your old songs.

That was the day my daughter's learned about British accents lol

Dare I say, we were there a couple of weeks ago
I don't know how to describe it but the sound made of ale gives off just hits different, regardless these sessions are awesome thanks lads!
This song's always reminded me of the kind of songs my parents would sing me as a child. There's just something wonderfully home-like about it.

It's the harmonies. It's a great song, but the harmonies elevate it to another level. Instant classic!
I sing along with most of their songs. I don't know how anyone could not sing along

I agree, and they remind me of the gatherings we’d go to with my father’s bagpipe band and my sister’s fife and drum corps when I was growing up :)
Sadly it's never gone out of fashion x
