Not necessarily. If a patient is able to be appropriately positioned in a slit lamp it is certainly preferred, however, non-ambulatory patients may require examination from a supine position in which case a direct ophthalmoscope would prove useful. In an ophthalmological specific practice it is not often utilized (in my experience)
in my practice, using direct ophthalmoscope, helped diagnose my patients with congenital cataracts, RP, Retinoblastoma and Glaucoma. important skill to be practice all the time by Primary EYE care doctors
