Dear Okoli, wow, this is very generous feedback. I am beyond thrilled to learn how this has helped you and, by extension, your work with students with visual impairments. This is why I love open-access learning resources: they go out into the world and can have good and unforeseen impact. Also, this is good affirmation of my style: to explain why things are or why we do them a certain way and not just demonstrate. Can you subscribe to me, and then I'll try to email you directly to learn more. Take care!
Thank you so much, I always had trouble figuring this out. No one has explained and taught how to read this chart. You explained it so well. So thankful to the UA-cam platform.
Hi, that is a great question. In grade 4, I personally memorized the chart so I could avoid glasses, but I was busted when they swapped out for a different chart. What I will do if I suspect it is jump around and point to letters here and there. Finally, if I really suspect it, I might ask them to be checked by an optometrist, who will have a variety of charts, including projected ones, that can't be memorized. However, usually, I'm dealing with someone who has some sort of eye problem. They want to see and have any problems taken care of. So, I'm not usually caring for someone who is trying to avoid glasses or otherwise minimize any problems with vision. DK
This is a great question. If you suspect it, swap it out for a different chart. If you don't have one, then maybe the best option is to refer to an optometrist who will have all sorts of cheat-proof ways to check visual acuity. The great thing with having a physical chart is you as the clinician DO memorize it, which means you can look at the patient while they are reading it, and make sure they are doing it correctly (such as making sure they are fully covering the eye, etc.). Thanks! DK
Wow you're so Amazing...I learned exactly how to do this..Such a great Teacher...Sometimes people explain things and you still can't get it, but the way you explained it was super easy..Thanks for this :)
The Duos Gamer wait. So you can completely read a smaller row. But cannot read the row above it (a larger row)? Well my friend, there’s only one explanation.... One explanation indeed.. WITCH!!! 🧹✨
Thank you for explaining how to read a visual acuity chart. It made things a lot clear. I do have two questions though. What if you do not have the space to measure out 20 ft distance? How can you check there acuity then? Also, what are the numbers on the right side of the chart for? Thank you.
Great questions! You can do 10 feet and then ensure you adjust (so if someone read the 20/10 line perfectly at 10 feet, it would become 20/20). Eye clinics will have fancy mirrors set up to give a longer distance too. The numbers on the right are so you can say, "Can you read line 8?" I find because they are on the right side, it is not intuitive for anyone.
Things are more nuanced with astigmatism (I have it too). That's beyond me. But I'm glad this video explained how and why for the big topics. Take care, DK
You chose the wrong path. Now tell me your latest prescription -1 or -2 or -3. Bro still have time. dont follow these fucking culprits optometrists. You can reverse your myopia .
Great video. The only thing different I was taught (when I was training in St. Louis) was if they only got two letters correct on a line then, as you said, call it the line above: 20/50 but give them credit for the two they got right. So it would be 20/50 +2. Maybe that's just a U.S. thing...
Hi - in fact, that's why this video was made! Our clinic had hired some new medical assistants, and because of my emergency background, I was asked to teach them this stuff. Great! Next year, we had some more hires and was asked to teach again, so I thought, "This is a great time for a teaching video!" And the rest is history - the most viewed visual acuity video on youtube, as far as I can see. (See what I did there?) :) DK
Pinholes partial correction due to light bending because of the small pinhole size. If someone needs a pinhole to see, then they need to see an eye doc of some type. I guess if someone can make out letters with a pinhole that's way better than not being able to read any letters with a pinhole. I would clearly document scores without pinhole and then with super obvious "PINHOLE" document their score with the pinhole.
me tooooo I rmb they did an eye checkup at my school and I lied to the ppl and said I couldn’t see any of the letters and they sent a little home to my mother telling them I need to go to an eye doctor to get a checkup and my mother told them I can see and stuff bc she knew I was lying but they told her she needed to go so I went and I ended up getting glasses and now I wear glasses and I’m blind 🥲
I did that in 5th grade and avoided glasses I have been lucky cuz I’ve been told I needed them for a month now and I just continue to sit in the front of the room and the nurses bad memory
when you ask a patient to read the letters, does this mean they should be able to see the letters crisp and clear? or just that they can see the letters a bit blurry but sufficient to read it? My understanding is that you want the vision to be able to read it without any blurriness?
Ideally no blurriness, but you score them based on what they answer, blurry or not. If someone needs glasses, an optometrist would try to get them to the right level of correction without over-shooting.
@@dkcalgary Hi Doctor, quick question. What does “hand motion” mean for a sight diagnosis? I was expecting to see 20/20 or 20/200 or numbers the doctor said this is the official way to describe if you are unable to see even the worst case numbers. But I can’t find any reference to “hand motion” in any eyesight medical documentation.
When my eyes in past 10 years doctor praise me because i can read the bottom letter even in far away they said my is like a camera that can 20x optical zoom but now my eye have 300gradient i suggest dont scratch your eyes when its itchy and dont look too much in the sun
Clever question! I usually start with the injured eye as they are less likely to see well with it. Starting with the "good" eye increases chance of someone remembering letters for when testing the injured eye.
Hi, this is good feedback. The key gap I try to fill is explaining WHY different bits of medicine are done the way they are. Some people like that extra context, some don't.
Today I got my eyes tested and my power increased again In my left eye its -4.75 and in right eye its -4.25, but I am facing some kind of problem like I am feeling a little pain in my eyes, but when I close my eyes then it's gone Is it because of different powers in eyes or increased power or is it something else

Hi, generally, I report the score for each eye, then report the score from when the patient does the chart with both eyes open. So it would be something like: R: 20/20 L: 20/30 Bilateral (both): 20/20-1
Hi, Is this test an optimal test to check for double vision problems with one eye or is the black background and white letters more appropriate to check for double vision problems? I have gone to two eye doctors and they put me in front of a digital white screen with black letters; then , they precede to take measurements with the phoropter. When my new glasses were ready I noticed that I was having "ghosting of the image" aberration. I only notice this aberration when I look at a black background and white letters, but not in the case of white background and black letters.
Thanks for this video. What if the patient vision is 20/70 while reading the letters on the wall, but when it comes to using the eye machine their vision is significantly bad. As in they are unable to read the letters in the eye machine?
My optometrist couldn't decide between 20/15 & 20/10 for my R eye and off the chart for my L eye (Made in blah, etc...). I got a 2nd & 3rd opinions, same thing, but i do need glasses for reading (appointment scheduled).
Is it possible for eyesight to worsen due to infection? I don't know what my visual acuity is but I think I've had an infection for a few months now that may be making my vision worse. My eyes sometimes dry out and get very blurry and feel heavy all the time. I'm going to see an opthalmologist soon but my family doctor says he thinks I have viral rhinitis. Whatever it is, I hope it can be corrected because it's driving me crazy. I always have blurry vision in the morning and keep seeing double.
I got -0.75 prescribed yesterday I can see fairly everything clearly Doc said my eyes are good. I wanted to ask when and where I should be wearing the glasses? Do I need to wear it while reading on my study table too?
I’m a high schooler, Since grade 4 I know that my eyesight just a little blurry when I’m on grade 4 I was ok, but when I’m grade 5, my teacher called me then I need to read the sentence I don’t have any glasses because we are poor, my teacher called me and I tried to read the blurry letters that I can see and tell me are you blind? That’s not "has" that is "was" and then my classmate laughed to me because they eyes are good and no problem😔 When I was grade 6 it’s very blurry and I just see letters when I use my glasses, my classmate laughing at me everyday but I pass it, then I’m here now high school😔 my glasses is almost 10 months, I wish I had new glasses😭
Awww that's so not cool, you shouldn't let everyone put you down like that always stand for yourself no matter what. it's okay to ignore a few times but not too everyone ,you have to call them out and put them in there places before they make fun of anyone like that .like it's not your fault your vision is blurry. Ugh I just don't know why ppl just can be this stupid to joke about it. I actually think glasses are cute :)
that sucks.... yea when i had to copy the notes that are on the screen... I couldt see them. it is so embarrassing and today I have an eye docter apointment im really scared what do i say when i cant see the big letters? "I cant see them?" Idk.....
I'm searching this for the purpose of filling out Visual Category Worksheet for one of my student who is totally blind. The problem is that I'm only given three boxes to check: 1)the student has a residual acuity of 20/70 or less; 2) the student's visual field is restricted to 20 degrees or less in the better eye; 3) the student has eye pathology or progressive eye disease that is expected to reduce residual acuity or visual field... I believe that my student should have been given the choice of residual acuity of 20/200 or less, which is not listed as a choice. What should I do? Which of the three aforementioned cases should I check off?
I think ask the student to take the form to their eye health professional. It sounds like box 1 is correct (as 20/200 is less than 20/70), but this person may have some nuances to sort out.
Does anyone here who does VA screening ever us the principle as he explained (time at 6:35) where 20/40-3 now goes to 20/50 but we add +2 showing they did identify a couple in the lower line. Or is it just me?
Make sure you test your vision with an eye professional. This is just HOW to test a patient's vision - it's not calibrated to the right size to test your own vision. Best of luck!
What if you can read the letters but the letters arent crisp and sharp but still readable, do you go off of just what’s readable or whats actually sharp and crisp and has 0 blur
It's based on what someone can see, even if blurry. BUT an optometrist can fine-tune things usually on a glasses prescription so there no or minimal blurriness.

Hi, you should get this checked out. DK
It is important for you to see an ophthalmologist or optometrist. I hope you did and your eyes are getting good care.
I thought that big E was a dragon from 20 foot.....damn :/
lol your comment made me laugh :)
:) I think you should drop by your health professional to get tested, though. Take care, DK
sometimes it looks like a D
Last time I tested it actually, I could only read the second one
@@drakesayshi3321 I almost cant read the top E. The eye doctor was like, holy shit.
I got -0.75 prescribed yesterday
I can see fairly everything clearly
Doc said my eyes are good.
I wanted to ask when and where I should be wearing the glasses?
Do I need to wear it while reading on my study table too?
Hi, I'm a family doc, not an optometrist. I think you should ask your eye doc about these questions. Take care!
What if you just memorized the chart
Mixup 221 i did that once lol. didn’t work
r/madlads
Mixup 221 LOL
this was very helpful.. right before the exam I checked it ✌
Great! DK
does Snell Chart have 6/5 vision letters in the last line
thank you, I learn a lot. love to see more videos
I cant read 6 with my right eye,and i cant read 7 with my left eye. Is it bad? Should i wear glasses ?
Hi, you may be fine, but depending on your line of work/study, it might make sense to get formally checked. Take care, DK
Wait, but like i could only read the E at my eye appointment but they said my vision was 20/100? So is it actually 20/200?
If they said it was 20/100, it probably is 20/100. They could have been using a different chart. Take care - I hope they help you with your vision.
I say Zed and i am from the Caribbean. Hahaa. I enjoyed this video thoroughly. Thank you!
+Kay Will Go "Zed"!
Im from carribbean too
I'm from Zambia and i say Zed too
I got an appointment today 😀
My visual acuity is 240p.
Thank you this really, help me as a medical assistant:) in my first day at work.
I’m a medical assistant too!
Very clear explanation, thanks!
Does anyone here who does VA screening ever us the principle as he explained (time at 6:35) where 20/40-3 now goes to 20/50 but we add +2 showing they did identify a couple in the lower line. Or is it just me?
Man, im just here to test my eye vision because being a pilot requires good eye visions... Honestly being a pilot is my dream job
Make sure you test your vision with an eye professional. This is just HOW to test a patient's vision - it's not calibrated to the right size to test your own vision. Best of luck!

You can reverse myopia just FYI. They eye doctors will say no, but they are wrong!!
Very informative. I always wondered how this worked.
I'm delighted to be of service! Thanks, David
What if you can read the letters but the letters arent crisp and sharp but still readable, do you go off of just what’s readable or whats actually sharp and crisp and has 0 blur
It's based on what someone can see, even if blurry. BUT an optometrist can fine-tune things usually on a glasses prescription so there no or minimal blurriness.
thank you!you made it clear for me..
Hi, thanks and Nice pun! DK
Great video! Thank you
